Abstract: Based on the Reed Lectures from 1967, Smith traces the anti-clerical message that accompanied the frontier religious preaching of Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone. Their hopes were that congregations could appoint their own leaders without the undue influence of outsiders. These evangelists were to be first and foremost servants, with no distinction between lay members and ministers. Smith, then traces the development of a professional ministry system within Disciples of Christ into the 1960s as churches called for greater levels of training among their preachers. Chapters include: ▪ A Nineteenth Century Revolution: A Free Ministry in a Free Society ▪ Pastors-Evangelists-Bishops and Sometimes Deacons ▪ Changing Ministries for Changing Times

Abstract: Originally published in 1953, Four Symposia on Folklore is a printed collection of transcribed tape recordings from the 1950 Midcentury International Folklore Conference at Indiana University. The collection is perhaps best described in the following excerpt from a 1954 review originally written by Richard M. Dorson for the Midwest Folklore journal: "Henceforth the loneliest folklorist starved for shoptalk can find congenial company at his elbow. ... This enthralling volume offers information into important work being carried on in centers of interest from Sweden to Arizona, provides rich insights ... and furnishes valuable suggestions for future lines of folkloristic endeavor. These data and ideas reach the reader ... in a medium most ideally suited to the folklorist's craft, the spontaneous spoken word, seized on tape and transported to the printed page. As an heroic attempt to pool information and focus the scattered energies of folklore enthusiasts in this country ... the Four Symposia constitutes a landmark in the history of American folklore studies."

Abstract: Salzburgers and Their Descendants is the original account of the lives and history of a colony of German Protestants who emigrated to Georgia in 1734. Following their arrival, they settled twenty-five miles north of Savannah, in Ebenezer, to create new lives for themselves in a "New World" of religious freedom. The account of this colony is beneficial to the study of Georgia history, as it furthers an understanding of the reasons for emigrating and of the struggles that settlers faced on arrival. Abstract: Storm Over Savannah: The Story of Count d'Estaing and the Siege of the Town in 1779 tells the story of France's attempt to take down Savannah, the center for Britain's military power in the colonies in 1779. This mission, led by Charles-Henri, Comte d'Estaing, was taken on by four thousand troops of King Louis XVI, in cooperation with Americans. This account of the little-known Siege of Savannah reveals a dramatic story worth telling. Abstract: The Houstouns of Georgia shares the history of one of the oldest families in Georgia, showcasing its influential members and reflecting on the effect of one family throughout the state's history. Established by Sir Patrick Houstoun, who accompanied James Oglethorpe and helped him lay the foundations of the colony, the Houstoun family has called Georgia home since its inception. Over two hundred years after its founding, the author of The Houstouns of Georgia traces her own lineage back to the Houstoun family in her heavily researched account of the family's presence in Georgia from its founding onward.
