    Abstract: People are now more liberated to give meaning to their life and to select values they deem important. What effect does this have on conversations about meaning and spirituality with the upcoming generation? Nowadays, shared religious and church practices are not as prevalent as they once were. Is a personal testimony of how meaning and spirituality have developed in one's own life the or a way of communicating something to children, pupils, and students? One way of sharing a testimony is the 'spiritual autobiography', a practice that was developed in the US and later brought to the Netherlands by Jannet Delver. It is now used in universities and higher vocational schools. Also for group discussions with clients, writing and sharing one's spiritual biography has been found to contribute to (re)finding sources of strength in difficult times

    Abstract: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought
    Abstract: "Al vroeg in de achttiende eeuw omschreven Europese denkers het tijdvak waarin zij leefden als verlicht. Het besef onderdeel te zijn van een ontwikkelde, beschaafde en commerciële periode schiep een nieuwe verhouding tot het verleden. Veel geschiedschrijvers schreven een historisch verhaal van vooruitgang - van de klassieke oudheid via de barbaarse middeleeuwen naar het moderne Europese statensysteem - om deze verlichte eeuw te verklaren.     Abstract: During the Indonesian war of independence, reports of alleged war crimes by Dutch soldiers penetrated the Netherlands only sparsely. Even so, it was during the war that the first calls for an independent investigation into such reports were heard. After repeated calls from the Tweede Kamer, a commission of three lawyers was finally sent to Indonesia in October 1949 with the task of carrying out a non-judicial investigation into the allegations of extreme violence. For various reasons, this enquiry commission submitted reports on only two cases, which were only signed by two of the three commission members, Kees van Rij and Wim Stam. Until 1969, the existence of these reports remained hidden from parliament and the outside world. During the preparation of the 'Excessennota', the reports resurfaced and never filed reports on six other cases were found. All eight reports played a crucial role in the drafting of the note, while the report on South Sulawesi in particular would prove of great importance for the historiography of the war. Up until now, the reports by Van Rij and Stam had been hidden deep in the archives. This source publication, preceded by an extensive introduction, makes them accessible to a wider public for the first time

    Abstract: For a long time, the war in Indonesia and the extreme violence used by the Dutch troops were not a subject that was much discussed or written about in the Netherlands. After the end of the war, the government made great efforts to avoid discussions about it or even to nip them in the bud. The revelations by East Indies veteran Joop Hueting in 1969 initially led to great commotion, resulting in the 'Excessennota' and the government position that the armed forces had behaved correctly, apart from a number of 'excesses'. That was it, until in recent decades more and more indications emerged that the armed forces had used extreme violence on a larger scale. Not only politicians but also journalists, historians and history teachers struggled with the violent decolonisation of Indonesia. The groups most affected, such as veterans, Moluccans and Indo-Europeans, were also reluctant for a long time to talk about their often bitter experiences in public. Finally, Indonesia also did not seem very interested in reviving this history of mutual violence. As a result, it was only very late, very cautiously and jerkily, that the war gained a place in the Dutch culture of remembrance

    Abstract: An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam's history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States' interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam's victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of 'a third way', the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars

    Abstract: On 17 August 1945, two days after the Japanese surrender that also brought an end to the Second World War in Asia, Indonesia declared its independence. The declaration was not recognized by the Netherlands, which resorted to force in its attempt to take control of the inevitable process of decolonization. This led to four years of difficult negotiations and bitter warfare. In 2005, the Dutch government declared that the Netherlands should never have waged the war. The government’s 1969 position on the violence used by the Dutch armed forces during the war remained unchanged, however: although there had been ‘excesses’, on the whole the armed forces had behaved ‘correctly’. As the indications of Dutch extreme violence mounted, this official position proved increasingly difficult to maintain. In 2016, the Dutch government therefore decided to fund a broad study on the dynamics of the violence. The most important conclusions of that research programme are summarized in this book. The authors show that the Dutch armed forces used extreme violence on a structural basis, and that this was concealed both at the time and for many years after the war by the Dutch government and by society more broadly. All of this – like the entire colonial history – is at odds with the rose-tinted self-image of the Netherlands

    Abstract: An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam’s history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States’ interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam’s victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of ‘a third way’, the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars

De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt.     Abstract: "Nicole Oresme was one of the most original and influential thinkers of the fourteenth century. He is best known for his mathematical discoveries, his economic theories, as well as his vernacular translations of cosmological and ethical texts that were undertaken at the request of King Charles V. This volume sheds light on the beginning of Oresme's scientific activity at the University of Paris (ca. 1340 - ca. 1350), a period of his intellectual career about which little is known. Over the course of this decade, Oresme lectured on many Aristotelian texts on natural philosophy, such as the Physics, On the Heavens, On generation and corruption, Meteorology, and On the Soul. Oresme's commentaries on Aristotle's Meteorology count among his only unpublished texts. This volume presents the first critical edition of books I-II.10 of the second redaction of Oresme's Questions on Meteorology.     Abstract: During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre
    Abstract: Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt.     Abstract: The requiem (or the death mass) is one of the oldest and longest surviving genres in Western music history. For hundreds of years it only existed in its original Gregorian guise, but from about 1450 many great composers were inspired to write of masterly new death masses Dies Irae introduces the reader to these masterpieces in an accessible way, without any prior musical knowledge being required. After an introduction to the meaning and structure of the text and music of the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead, a chronicle in three parts follows that guides the reader through the history of the requiem. In separate chapters, all the major and well-known requiems (including by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten and Webber), as well as some less popular but equally poignant works (such as the requiems by Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Zimmermann). Each requiem is discussed according to a fixed pattern, so that the reader can freely browse through different periods and compositions: first each work is situated music-historically, followed by a short discussion of each part separately. By linking the discussions to one reference recording per work, the reader can immediately test the explanation against listening practice. Under the direction of Pieter Bergé, and with the cooperation of Jan Christiaens, all contributions to 'Dies Irae. Chronicle of the Requiem' written by authors who are affiliated with the Musicology research unit of KU Leuven as teachers, researchers or alumnus
    Abstract: Het requiem (of de dodenmis) is een van de oudste en langst overlevende genres uit de westerse muziekgeschiedenis. Honderden jaren heeft het enkel bestaan in zijn oorspronkelijke gregoriaanse gedaante, maar vanaf ca. 1450 hebben heel wat grote componisten zich laten inspireren tot het schrijven van magistrale nieuwe dodenmissen. Dies Irae laat de lezer op toegankelijke wijze kennismaken met deze meesterwerken zonder dat muzikale voorkennis vereist is. Na een inleiding over de betekenis en structuur van de tekst en muziek van de aloude Latijnse dodenmis, volgt een kroniek in drie delen die de lezer door de geschiedenis van het requiem gidst. In aparte hoofdstukken komen alle grote en bekende requiems aan bod (onder meer van Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten en Webber), evenals enkele minder populaire maar minstens even aangrijpende werken (zoals de requiems van Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky en Zimmermann).     Abstract: Een samenleving zonder internet is tegenwoordig ondenkbaar. Toen het protocol waarop internet gebouwd is (TCP/IP) midden de jaren 1970 ontwikkeld werd, kon niemand de impact door het ontwikkelen van allerhande internetapplicaties voorspellen. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan eBay, Facebook, Google Search, YouTube, Netflix, Skype en internetbankieren. Er zijn daarnaast ook talloze bedrijfsprocessen waar de burger niet rechtstreeks mee in contact komt. Al deze applicaties zijn in essentie gebaseerd op één simpel principe, namelijk snel en goedkoop informatie uitwisselen. Blockchain, dat voor het eerst in Bitcoin toegepast werd, belooft hetzelfde, maar deze keer vooral voor het uitwisselen van waarde. Zoals e-mail als de applicatie wordt beschouwd die internet deed boomen, kan in zekere zin voor blockchain hetzelfde worden verteld over Bitcoin. Op zijn minst is Bitcoin verantwoordelijk voor de blockchainhype, waardoor iedereen nu in elk geval al eens van blockchain gehoord heeft. Wat internet nu betekent voor de uitwisseling van gegevens, zou blockchain kunnen betekenen voor het uitwisselen van waarde. Blockchain maakt het immers mogelijk om snel, goedkoop, geautomatiseerd en zonder tussenpartij waarde uit te wisselen. Hoofdstuk 2 gaat over smart contracts, waarmee het blockchainnetwerk regels collectief kan afdwingen. Hoofdstuk 3 gaat in op bitcoins en andere virtuele munten, terwijl hoofdstuk 4 de mogelijke toepassing van blockchain in de vastgoedpraktijk analyseert. Hoofdstuk 5 behandelt beknopt allerlei andere blockchaintoepassingen. Hoofdstuk 6 gaat in op de toepasselijke privacywetgeving, waarna hoofdstuk 7 dieper ingaat op het concept van gedistribueerd vertrouwen.     Abstract: Sinds 2018 biedt de gemeente Amsterdam 15 uur voorschoolse educatie aan alle peuters. Dat betekent in vergelijking met de periode daarvoor een uitbreiding van 12 naar 15 uur voor peuters met een doelgroepindicatie en van zes naar 15 uur voor peuters zonder een indicatie. De verwachting was dat 15 uur zou leiden tot meer stabiele en meer heterogene groepen en als gevolg hiervan een positieve uitwerking op de proceskwaliteit. Pedagogisch medewerkers beoordelen de urenuitbreiding als positief. Meer uren stelt hen in staat de dagindeling flexibeler af te stemmen op de kinderen. Er kon niet worden vastgesteld dat urenuitbreiding leidde tot een hogere proceskwaliteit. Verlenging naar 15 uur betekent ook niet automatisch dat de samenstelling van de groepen meer heterogeen wordt. De instroom van kinderen in voorschoolse educatie lijkt namelijk ook beïnvloed te worden door andere (gelijktijdige) veranderingen in het beleid, zoals het invoeren van een eigen bijdrage voor vve. Wanneer een gemeente nastreeft dat kinderen van verschillende achtergronden al jong met elkaar opgroeien, zijn tevens andere beleidsimpulsen nodig. De verandering naar 15 uur is uitgevoerd in een periode waarin meerdere veranderingen hebben plaatsgevonden in de kinderopvang/vve. Ten eerste een verandering van gratis voorschoolse educatie naar een door ouders betaalde bijdrage. Ten tweede een verlaging van de leeftijd waarop kinderen de voorschoolse educatie binnenkomen, van tweeënhalf naar twee jaar. Dit betekende een uitdaging voor veel pm’ers omdat zij nog niet gewend waren aan een jongere doelgroep binnen de vve. Mogelijk hebben deze verschillende factoren invloed gehad op de gevonden resultaten. We kunnen uit het onderzoek geen definitieve conclusies trekken over de invloed van meer uren vve op stabiliteit, menging en proceskwaliteit. Daar komt bij dat het verschil met de oorspronkelijke 12 uur vve ook niet erg groot was. Een rigoureuze wijziging in de deelnametijd per week zou wellicht een ander beeld hebben laten zien. Het project maakt deel uit van het programma ‘Innovatiecentra vve’ van het ministerie van OCW en NRO, waarin vijf interventies werden geselecteerd en onderzocht op hun bijdrage aan verhoging van kwaliteit van voor- en vroegschoolse educatie. Naast dit Amsterdamse project werden vier andere innovatiecentra onderzocht, in de gemeenten Den Haag, Leiden, Dordrecht en Heerlen

    Abstract: Crossing borders is a perilous undertaking, as this time of migrations and pandemics teaches us. Also for language-related cultural goods such as literary works, crossing those borders requires a lot of planning, strategic insights and a love for language and literature. After all, on their journey abroad, books bring with them other stories and cultural images, which in turn are filtered, if not manipulated, during the processes of selection and reception in the language of their destination. The study of this image (de)formation is therefore crucial in research into literary transfer. The authors of this collection respond to this by tracing the route of Dutch literature to Southern Europe and studying the image of Flanders and the Netherlands as expressed in translations through a combination of imagological and sociological translational findings. The conclusions in this collection show that the study of image formation in literary transfer can break through stereotypes and increase cultural awareness: crossing borders means pushing boundaries
    Abstract: Grenzen overschrijden is een hachelijke onderneming, zoals deze tijd van migraties en pandemieën ons leert. Ook voor taalgebonden cultuurgoederen zoals literaire werken vergt het oversteken van die grenzen veel planning, strategische inzichten en een liefde voor taal en literatuur. Op hun reis naar het buitenland brengen boeken immers andere verhalen en culturele beelden mee, die op hun beurt ge lterd, zo niet gemanipuleerd, worden tijdens de processen van selectie en receptie in de taal van hun bestemming. De studie van die beeld(ver)vorming is daarom cruciaal in het onderzoek naar literaire transfer. De auteurs van deze bundel spelen hierop in door het parcours van de Nederlandstalige literatuur naar Zuid-Europa te traceren en via een combinatie van imagologische en vertaalsociologische bevindingen de beeldvorming van Vlaanderen en Nederland te bestuderen zoals die tot uiting komt in vertalingen. De conclusies in deze bundel tonen aan dat de studie van beeldvorming in literaire transfer stereotypen kan doorbreken en het culturele bewustzijn kan verhogen: grenzen overschrijden is grenzen verleggen

Vervolgens wordt de oorsprong van de Family Group Conference besproken en hoe deze zich wereldwijd heeft verspreid en heeft geresulteerd in een aantal internationale studies, waarin de Family Group Conference is gecontrasteerd met professionele hulpverlening. Een aantal toonaangevende studies is geschematiseerd weergegeven in Hoofdstuk 1. Hoe de vragen van de maatschappelijke partners in de definitieve onderzoeksopzet werden vertaald en welke uitkomstmaten gekozen werden, wordt beschreven in Hoofdstuk 2: Onderzoeksopzet. In Hoofdstuk 3 worden de uitkomsten van het empirische onderdeel van het onderzoek onder zorgvragers gepresenteerd. Hoofdstuk 4 bespreekt de uitkomsten van het onderzoek onder zorgprofessionals en Eigen Kracht coördinatoren. In een aantal zaken bleken het netwerk en de zorgprofessional ondersteuningstaken specifiek verdeeld te hebben. In Hoofdstuk 5 zijn deze patronen van taakverdeling op basis van gemeenschappelijke elementen gestileerd in een drietal scenario’s, waarvan de kostenimplicaties zijn berekend, in het bijzonder het potentieel aan besparingen. In Hoofdstuk 6 worden de bevindingen van het onderzoek geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van het NWO Slimme sturing programma, met accent op de sturingsinstrumenten die centraal staan in het sociale domein: regulering en budgettering. Bezien wordt wat exact de reikwijdte is van het nog vrijwel onbekende recht op een Familiegroepsplan. Hoofdstuk 7 sluit het rapport af met een slotbeschouwing en een aantal aanbevelingen, voor de betrokken maatschappelijke partners en voor de wetenschap

Bovendien kwamen door de grote welvaart heel veel migranten uit binnen- en buitenland naar Amsterdam. In ‘Een mooie mengelmoes’ laten Nicoline van der Sijs en Marc van Oostendorp zien dat het ontstaan van het Nederlands alleen kan worden begrepen tegen de achtergrond van al die talen en dialecten die er toen in de Lage Landen werden geschreven. De auteurs presenteren het eerste onderzoek naar de pas ontsloten schat van zeventiende-eeuwse kranten – Nederlandse drukkers zetten in dit eerste massamedium internationaal de toon – én ze laten zien hoe schrijvers buitenlandse modellen imiteerden. Maar dat deden in ‘zuiver’ Nederlands, en niet in een ‘mengelmoes’ van leenwoorden zoals die in het dagelijks leven werd gebruikt

    Abstract: The study scrutinizes the effects of language awareness on teachers’ conceptualization of language variation. Teacher language awareness has been discussed mostly for the case of English and with regard to grammar, and is defined as being determined by knowledge and reflexion (Andrews 2008, Svalberg 2012). This study aims at examining the reach of the concept for other languages, here Dutch, and for other terrains, in this case, language variation, thus stretching the application also into the realm of language ideology. According to Kroskrity (2006, 2016), language ideologies are (1) not knowledge but ‘‘notions’, ‘beliefs’ or ‘ideas’, which (2) are about language, the role(s) of language and its nature, and which (3) are constructed by individuals and groups in interaction with each other to (4) rationalize and justify social relations. In this linguistic-ethnographic study, a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with teachers of Dutch at eight European universities shows that knowledge and reflection play a considerable role for how teachers conceptualize language variation in class. Overall, four different types of teacher language awareness came to the fore, based on different interplays of both knowledge and reflection: standard language ideology alive, strong focus on prescription, doubting and linguistic insecurity and dynamic equilibrium. The overall results show the importance of teacher language awareness in language classes and help to boil down the vague notion of language awareness on language variation to two major defining factors, namely knowledge and reflection. Further, the study shows that language classrooms may be seen as ‘ideological sites’ (Silverstein (1979, 1998)), in which language ideology may be either reproduced or deconstructed, depending on the language awareness of the teacher. The consequences of the study for language teacher education are a plea for an informed, reflected, differentiated and integrative treatment of language variation in language class
    Abstract: Taalvariatie stelt docenten voor een bijzondere uitdaging: de vraag naar wat (nog net) kan en naar wat fout is. Die vraag is vaak niet zo makkelijk te beantwoorden. Hoe taaldocenten omgaan met taalvariatie, staat in deze sociolinguïstische studie centraal. Met een etnografische methode slaagt Truus De Wilde erin te achterhalen hoe docenten reageren op taalvariatie en analyseert ze achterliggende motieven. Taalideologieën over wat een standaardtaal is en zou moeten zijn, liggen aan de basis van deze analyse. Op basis van deze ideologieën worden vier archetypes geconstrueerd. De vele citaten uit interviews illustreren de archetypes en wijzen op de centrale rol van taalbewustzijn

Daarbij staan literaire vertalingen centraal met Nederlands als brontaal. Van de drie elementen van het transferparcours – selectie, transport en receptie – gaat de aandacht in het bijzonder uit naar kwesties die met de productiezijde van het literaire transferproces te maken hebben.     Abstract: This volume of Lage Landen Studies has a twofold purpose: on the one hand we want to pay attention to the scholarly work on the Dutch author Cees Nooteboom, in particular to his poetry in translation which has hardly received any academic attention yet, and on the other hand we would like to contribute to trends in Translation Studies which focus on agency, subjectivity, intention, translators poetics and creativity in translated texts. Indeed, in the last decade the focus of Translation Studies has shifted to the translator who plays such an important role in the circulation of cultural products nowadays. In this volume the contributions not only focus on Nooteboom’s poems in translation, but also on Nooteboom as a translator of poetry himself, again a subject which has hardly been studied yet. The first part opens with an introduction on Nooteboom’s poetry by Susanne Schaber, editor of the Gesammelte Werke at Suhrkamp Verlag in Germany. In the second contribution of this section Ton Naaijkens gives a plea for intuition and creativity in scholarly work on translation. The second section deals with Cees Nooteboom as a translator of poetry. Esther Op de Beek, who contributed together with Nooteboom on the book Avenue (fifteen years of world literature), highlights the position of Nooteboom as a cultural mediator. Stéphanie Vanastens contribution analyses this mediation position with the help of a concrete case study of two French poets translated and presented by Nooteboom to the Dutch and Flemish public of Avenue. Yves T’Sjoen addresses methodological issues for translation scholars who want to study the work of writer-translators such as Claus and Nooteboom. In the last section, the translated poetry of Nooteboom forms the centre of the contributions. Jane Fenoulhet focusses on four English translations of the poem ‘Bashō’, Stefaan Evenepoel on two translations of ‘Leeftocht’ and in the round table discussion translators Ard Posthuma, David Colmer, Irinia Michajlova and Philippe Noble discuss their translators’ choices with the poet Cees Nooteboom. In his afterword the poet reflects on the round table and the symposium in Ghent in November 2016 which formed the exciting starting point for this volume

    Abstract: The Archive of the City of Vienna keeps three folio-volumes of a manuscript in conservation of her archive, which in common was marked as “Wiener Testamentsbücher” (Viennese Last Wills-Register). The source, comprising the period of 1395 to 1430, at this time was named “Stadtbuch”, and this appoints the character of such registers, which served for registration of legal transactions in urban space.     Abstract: Het Nederlandse politieke landschap werd van oudsher gedomineerd door drie stromingen: christendemocraten, liberalen en sociaaldemocraten. Lange tijd toonden verkiezingsuitslagen een hoge mate van continui͏̈teit. Daar kwam aan het eind van de jaren zestig van de 20e eeuw verandering in. Vanaf 1994 zette deze ontwikkeling door en sindsdien laten verkiezingen steeds grote verschuivingen zien. Met de opkomst van populistische stromingen, vanaf 2002, is bovendien het politieke landschap ingrijpend veranderd.De snelle veranderingen in het partijenspectrum zorgen voor een overbelichting van de verschillen tussen ?toen? en ?nu?. Bij oppervlakkige beschouwing staat de instabiliteit van vandaag tegenover de gestolde onbeweeglijkheid van het verleden. Een dergelijk beeld is echter een versimpeling, want ook in vroeger jaren konden de politieke spanningen hoog oplopen en kwamen kabinetten regelmatig voortijdig ten val. Er is niet alleen sprake van discontinui͏̈teit, maar ook wel degelijk van een doorgaande lijn.'Een versplinterd landschap' belicht deze historische lijn voor alle politieke partijen die in 2017 in de Tweede Kamer zijn gekozen. De oudste daarvan bestaat al bijna honderd jaar (SGP), de jongste partijen (DENK en FvD) zijn nagelnieuw. Vrijwel alle bijdragen zijn geschreven door vertegenwoordigers van de wetenschappelijke bureaus van de partijen, waardoor een unieke invalshoek is ontstaan: wetenschappelijke distantie gecombineerd met een beschouwing van ?binnenuit?
