Abstract: Since World War II, women have made influential contributions to the ceramics field in Japan that have not been adequately recognized. This exhibition focuses on the explosion of innovative and technically ambitious compositions by such artists since 1970—a body of work which they developed in parallel with, but often separately from, traditional, male-dominated Japanese practice and its countermovements

Abstract: Japan's Edo period (1615-1868) witnessed the arrival of peace after centuries of warfare, together with economic prosperity, population growth, and increased urbanization. The arts of the period flourished, reflecting and inflecting these fertile conditions. Painting Edo: Selections from the Feinberg Collection of Japanese Art explores this rich visual culture, highlighting works from an unparalleled collection to showcase the masters of various Edo schools and lineages. Beautiful illustrations punctuate the catalogue's essays: Yukio Lippit situates the works within a broad cultural history of early modern Japan, and Rachel Saunders focuses on a single artist, offering fresh perspectives on the late "bird-and-flower paintings" of Sakai Hoitsu. Together, these essays unpack the literary, artistic, and cultural histories that form the basis for how these masterful works would have been received in their time-and for how we can best understand them today. A complete catalogue of the Feinberg Collection will be published in July 2020 (ISBN 9780300250909). Exhibition: Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, USA (14.02.-26.07.2020)

Abstract: Introduction : Finding the poetic in Japanese visual art / Maribeth Graybill -- A history of "poetic vision" in Japan / Joshua S. Mostow -- Calligraphy as visual poetry / Sadako Ohki -- The poet portrayed / Maribeth Graybill -- The lyricism of ink painting / Arata Shimao -- Japanese literati painting and its relationship to Chinese culture / Paul Berry -- Modern visions : early twentieth-century ink painters / Michiyo Morioka -- Appendix : Signatures and seals / Sangah Kim.
Abstract: "Assembled over the last four decades and still growing, the Mary and Cheney Cowles collection of Japanese art is one of the finest in private hands in North America. What began for Cheney Cowles as an almost casual interest in collecting early Imari ware evolved, over time, into a passion for Japanese paintings and calligraphy. This volume focuses on what the authors found to be a compelling, recurring thread within that variety: a predilection for visual poetry. Occasionally, the text or image will illustrate or allude to a specific verse; more often, the relationship to poetry is more intuitive and rooted in a long-standing pictorial tradition. From the meditative serenity of Soei's White Herons and Reeds (early sixteenth century) to the heartwarming lyricism of Yosa Buson's Visiting a Friend in Plum Valley (1781) or the frenzied energy of Tomioka Tessai's Admiring the Moon from a Grotto (1916), the paintings illustrated in this volume suggest, rather than specify. Like the resonant verses in classical Chinese or Japanese, rich with nuanced layers of signification, the pictorial images invite the viewer's full attention and participation to complete their meaning"--

Abstract: "This will be the first major loan exhibition in North America to focus on the artistic tradition inspired by Japan's most celebrated work of literature, The Tale of Genji. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting in the early eleventh-century imperial court, and often referred to as the world's first psychological novel, the tale recounts the amorous escapades of the "Shining Prince" Genji and introduces some of the most iconic female characters in the history of Japanese literature. Covering the period from the eleventh century to the present, the exhibition will feature more than 120 works, including paintings, calligraphy, silk robes, lacquer wedding set items, a palanquin for the shogun's bride, and popular art such as ukiyo-e prints and modern manga. Highlights include two National Treasures and several works recognized as Important Cultural Properties. For the first time ever outside Japan, rare works will be on view from Ishiyamadera Temple—where, according to legend, Shikibu started writing the tale." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Abstract: "For more than 2,000 years, artworks have captured essential aspects of Buddhist thought. How to Read Buddhist Art introduces this vast visual tradition to a general audience with 60 seminal artworks from The Met's collection. Reliquaries, sculptures, and paintings produced in China, the Himalayas, Japan, Korea, and South and Southeast Asia provide insight into the complex iconography of Buddhism while also addressing the technical virtuosity of their makers and the social and political climate in which they were made." -- Yale Books website
Abstract: An indispensable introduction to the evolution of Buddhist imagery from its origins in India through its spread to China, Japan, and South Asia. For more than 2,000 years, sublime works of art have been created to embody essential aspects of Buddhist thought, which developed and evolved as its practice spread from India to East Asia and beyond. How to Read Buddhist Art introduces this complex visual tradition to a general audience by examining sixty seminal works. Beginning with the origins of representations of the Buddha in India, and moving on to address the development of Buddhist art as the religion spread across Asia, this book conveys how Buddhist philosophy affected artistic works and practice across cultural boundaries. Reliquaries, sculptures, and paintings produced in China, the Himalayas, Japan, Korea, and South and Southeast Asia provide insight into the rich iconography of Buddhism, the technical virtuosity of their makers, and the social and political climate in which they were created. Beautiful photographs of the artworks, maps, and a glossary of the major Buddhist deities offer an engaging and informative setting in which readers-regardless of their familiarity with Buddhism-can better understand the art related to the religion's practices and representations

Abstract: Le site de l'exposition indique : "Jarracharra: dry season wind showcases a powerful collection of Aboriginal women's textile art from the Maningrida region in Western Arnhem Land, Australia. This exhibition features women pushing artistic barriers to depict ancient narratives using contemporary mediums. Women's deep and intrinsic cultural knowledge runs through all the works in this exhibition. Jarracharra is the powerful cool wind that blows across Arnhem Land each dry season, signifying the beginning of a period of exchange between clans and an annual ceremonial coming together. Jarracharra, a term in the Burarra language, represents a metaphor for the way the Bábbarra Women's Centre brings together different Aboriginal cultures and stories from across Arnhem Land. The exhibition presents a rich variety of textile designs from a range of Bábbarra eras. The works hang together cohesively as one body, in the same manner diverse artists operate together at Bábbarra as one family. The artists featured in Jarracharra often speak or understand more than six living Aboriginal languages, and have complex social and ceremonial links with all neighbouring groups. The majority of artists in this exhibition are Kuninjku; however, there are also artists from the Gurr-goni, Ndjébbana, Mawng, Burarra, Djambarrpuyngu, Djinang, Rembarrnga, Kriol and Kune languages."

Abstract: "Reformer, Gelehrte, Politiker...

Abstract: Ravens & Red Lipstick' provides a visually bold survey of Japanese photography's recent history. Drawing together extensive research and a succession of engaging dialogues with both emerging and established photographers, Lena Fritsch traces its development chronologically from the severity of post-war Realism to the diverse ingenuity of photography in contemporary Japan, via the work of movements and groups such as Vivo in the 1960s and`Girl Power' in the '90s. Interspersed are fascinating original interviews with some of the most influential photographers of each era, from Daido Moriyama to Nobuyoshi Araki and Rinko Kawauchi. Interrogating the business, education and art-institutional backdrops to each movement, Fritsch masterfully demonstrates the centrality of these contexts to the form and reception of a cross-section of Japanese photographic works. 0Fritsch's great achievement is to bring observations from a range of disciplines to bear on her commentary with imagination and clarity

Abstract: Raghubir Singh (1942-1999) was a pioneer of color street photography who worked and published prolifically from the late 1960s until his death in 1999 at age 56. His vivid, intensely hued photographs capture rural and urban India and iconic depictions of Indian culture though a truly cosmopolitan approach that succeeded in blending East and West. This richly illustrated volume studies in depth the full breadth of Singh's work, situating it at the intersection of Western Modernism and traditional South Asian modes of picturing the world. The book showcases 90 of his photographs, including some previously unpublished images, in counterpoint both with the work of his contemporaries and with images of traditional South Asian artworks that inspired his practice

Abstract: An exceptional overview of the experimental, political, and participatory artwork of an important, iconoclastic Latin American artist Lygia Pape (1927-2004) was an influential Brazilian artist and pioneering member of the postwar avant-garde. She worked across an expansive range of media, including painting, drawing, prints, sculpture, film, performance, poetry, and installation, and her art is now exhibited worldwide. This handsome book provides an extensive examination of her lengthy, prolific career. Pape embraced the ideals of Concrete art and geometric abstraction early on, and later was an active participant in the Neo Concrete movement that championed experimentation and chance. During this time, she created participatory works that questioned the space between artist and viewer, as well as the social context of art itself. Featuring essays from art historians in both North and South America, an illustrated chronology, and two previously untranslated interviews with the artist, Lygia Pape is a testament to Pape's lasting importance to the modern art and culture of Latin America and to her position as a major figure of the international avant-garde. Abstract: Oishii!' - 'Delicious!' - is the most common word in Japan to describe food. Expressing culinary taste goes hand in hand with the social and cultural identity of those eating it. Hence food is much more than nutrition; rather it is tied to all areas of human life and illustrates the various aspects of a society and its culture. Against this backdrop renowned authors devote themselves to Japanese food and drink culture. How is rice cultivated? How do you catch bonitos? What is the secret to good sake and how did green tea become a lifestyle product? Hitherto partly undisclosed treasures from the Linden-Museum Stuttgart and valuable examples from home and abroad draw attention to the rich material culture of food and drink in Japan

Abstract: "From the 1870s to the early twentieth century, the Bohemian immigrant artist Gottfried Lindauer travelled to marae and rural towns around New Zealand and – commissioned by Māori and Pākehā – captured in paint the images of key Māori figures. The book presents 67 major portraits and 8 genre paintings alongside detailed accounts of the subject and work, followed by essays by leading scholars that take us inside Lindauer and his world: from his artistic training in Bohemia to his travels around New Zealand as Māori and Pākehā commissioned him to paint portraits; his artistic techniques and deep relationship with photography; Henry Partridge’s gallery of Lindauer works on Queen Street in Auckland where Māori visited to see their ancestors; and the afterlife of the paintings in marae and memory"--Publisher information

Abstract: "Global exploration in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to new interactions between Europe and Asia. Jesuit priests were instrumental in spreading knowledge of the world to China and information about China to Europe. China at the Center focuses on two masterpieces of seventeenth-century map-making that illustrate this exchange of information (and misinformation). The first map is the Kunyu wanguo quantu, or Map of the Ten Thousand Countries of the Earth, also known as the 1602 Ricci map, after Matteo Ricci, the Jesuit priest who helped create it. The second is the 1674 Verbiest world map, which was also made by a Jesuit priest, Ferdinand Verbiest, for the Chinese court. These two maps are among the earliest, rarest, and largest woodblock-printed maps to survive from the period. They will be examined through the lens of the development of cartography in China and through the biographies of the fascinating men who were instrumental in their production. Maps are political objects, and the inclusion of elaborate and extensive notations on both these maps illustrate the fascinating relationships between the Jesuits and the Chinese courts. These maps represent the meeting of two worldviews, and the information they contain provided Europeans with greater knowledge of China and the Chinese with new ideas about geography, astronomy, and the natural sciences. This book accompanies the exhibition China at the Center, at the Asian Art Museum March 4-May 8, 2016, which brings together the 1602 Ricci map from the James Ford Bell Trust in Minneapolis and the 1674 Verbiest map from the Library of Congress in Washington D.C"--

Abstract: "Exhibition catalogue for The Rama Epic--recounting the struggle of Prince Rama to defeat a powerful demonic king, rescue his abducted wife and reestablish virtuous order in the world. The epic has been a prime subject for visual and performing arts, literature and religious thought in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia for many centuries. A huge number of artworks of all kinds relating to the Rama legends have been made over the course of 1500 years in a dozen countries. This book illustrates some of the most important episodes involving the four primary characters: the hero, Rama; the heroine, Rama's wife Sita; the ally, Rama's faithful monkey lieutenant Hanuman; and the foe, the ten-headed demon king Ravana. The catalogue tells the story in a new light using more than 130 artworks, ranging from paintings to puppets to decorative arts to contemporary works to ephemera, inviting readers to find echoes of their own experiences in the stories and dilemmas of each of the characters"--

Abstract: "Exploring the topic of narrativity in Indian art, this beautiful and deeply researched book considers illustrations to the Bhagavata Purana, the Ramayana, the Ragamala, and a range of texts in the Persian language, notably the Shahnama. Featuring stunning reproductions of paintings made between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries from the Edwin Binney 3rd Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, the publication includes thorough and fascinating explanations of the narrative of each text, including how that narrative is visually conveyed. Essays examine why these particular stories are so enduring, why patrons may have chosen to have a copy of a particular text made for their own collections, and how artists responded to the challenge of creating new versions of venerable classics"--

Abstract: "Featuring more than 100 extraordinary works of art from 1800 to the present, Earth Matters reveals how African individuals and communities have visually mediated their most poignant relationships with the land--whether it be to earth as a sacred or medicinal material, as something uncovered by mining or claimed by burial, as a surface to be interpreted and turned to for inspiration, or as an environment to be protected. Both internationally recognized and emerging contemporary artists are represented, from the continent and diaspora, including El Anatsui, Ghada Amer, Sammy Baloji, Ingrid Mwangi and William Kentridge. Highlights include a pair of rare Yoruba onile figures, a one-of-a-kind Punu reliquary from Gabon, and 3 bocio figures from the personal collection of legendary French dealer Jacques Kerchache. The text includes statements by contemporary African artists including Wangechi Mutu, Clive van den Berg, Allan de Souza, and George Osodi. National Museum of African Art curator Karen E. Milbourne explores how diverse African concepts of healing, the sacred, identity, memory, history, and environmental sustainability have all been formed in relation to the land in this pioneering scholarly study."--Publisher's website

Abstract: "Horace Poolaw (Kiowa, 1906-84) was born during a time of great change for his American Indian people as they balanced age-old traditions with the influences of mainstream America. A rare American Indian photographer who documented Indian subjects, Poolaw began making a visual history in the mid-1920s and continued for the next fifty years. When he sold his photos, he often stamped the reverse: 'A Poolaw Photo, Pictures by an Indian, Horace M. Poolaw, Anadarko, Okla.' Not simply by 'an Indian,' but a Kiowa man strongly rooted in his multi-tribal community, Poolaw's work celebrates his subjects' place in American life and preserves an insider's perspective on a world few outsiders are familiar with--the Native America of the southern plains during the mid-twentieth century. [This book] is based on the Poolaw Photography Project, a research initiative established by Poolaw's daughter Linda in 1989 at Stanford University and carried on by Native scholars Nancy Marie Mithlo (Chiricahua Apache) and Tom Jones (Ho-Chunk) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison"--

Abstract: Director's foreword -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Map of American Indian localities in 1833 -- George Catlin and the representation of North American Indiand Stephanie Pratt -- George Catlin: an American artist t home and abroad Joan Carpenter Troccoli -- Chronology -- Plates -- Notes and nomenclature -- Bibliography -- Picture credits -- Index. - This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, showcases works from Catlin's 'Indian Gallery' - a series of portraits not seen in the UK since the 1840s - and seeks to reposition this remarkable artist for a contemporary audience. The authors explore the origins of Catlin's achievement: his ambition to record what he believed to be dying cultures, and his collecting activities, educational intentions and methods of exhibition and display, which demonstrate the growth of a new sensibility towards native peoples. While Catlin's work is well known in the USA, especially in Washington DC, where most of it is still housed in the Smithsonian Institution, George Catlin's Indian Gallery will help to bring these spectacular pictures to new audiences in Britain and around the world. 0Exhibition: National Portrait Gallery, London, UK (4.3.-23.6.2013). 0

Abstract: In 1946-47 the senior ceremonial leaders of the Yirrkala region produced 365 vibrant crayon drawings on paper for the anthropologists Ronald and Catherine Berndt. Held by the Berndt Museum of Anthropology at the University of Western Australia, the works have never been shown in any great number. In an unexpected palette of brilliant red, blue, yellow, green and black, they depict in exquisite detail the complexities of Yolngu life and cultural inheritance. They include works by those who became leading artists, including Mawalan and Wandjuk Marika, Munggurrawuy Yunupingu, Narritjin Maymuru and Wongu Mununggurr. The descendants of these artists continue to produce artworks, and a selection of these will also be displayed
