Kurzfassung: "This landmark book charts the development of Australian art, from early Aboriginal paintings and those of the early colonial settlers to the work of later immigrants and today's artists that reflects their cultural diverse influences. Spanning over 200 years from 1800 to the present day, this major survey sheds light on an intense period of change in Australian culture and society through such powerful paintings as Sidney Nolan's outlaw Ned Kelly, as well as the highly original work by artists such as Rover Thomas, Tracey Moffatt, Fiona Hall and Vernon Ah Kee. The art of this continent is closely linked to its landscape. Australian artists, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, have long found inspiration in its natural beauty, distinctive light and sheer diversity. By evolving their own responses to the city, the beach and the bush in paintings, prints, drawings, watercolours, bark paintings, photographs and film, they reveal the profound influence of the Australian land and landscape."--Book jacket
Kurzfassung: Marking the first major survey of Australian art in the United Kingdom for 50 years, this catalogue spans more than 200 years from 1800 to the present day and seeks to uncover the fascinating social and cultural evolution of a nation through its art. Two hundred works including painting, drawing, photography, watercolours and multimedia will shed light on a period of rapid and intense change; from the impact of colonisation on an indigenous people, to the pioneering nation building of the 19th century through to the enterprising urbanisation of the last 100 years.--

Kurzfassung: In 1946-47 the senior ceremonial leaders of the Yirrkala region produced 365 vibrant crayon drawings on paper for the anthropologists Ronald and Catherine Berndt. Held by the Berndt Museum of Anthropology at the University of Western Australia, the works have never been shown in any great number. In an unexpected palette of brilliant red, blue, yellow, green and black, they depict in exquisite detail the complexities of Yolngu life and cultural inheritance. They include works by those who became leading artists, including Mawalan and Wandjuk Marika, Munggurrawuy Yunupingu, Narritjin Maymuru and Wongu Mununggurr. The descendants of these artists continue to produce artworks, and a selection of these will also be displayed

Kurzfassung: Director's foreword -- Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- Map of American Indian localities in 1833 -- George Catlin and the representation of North American Indiand Stephanie Pratt -- George Catlin: an American artist t home and abroad Joan Carpenter Troccoli -- Chronology -- Plates -- Notes and nomenclature -- Bibliography -- Picture credits -- Index. - This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, showcases works from Catlin's 'Indian Gallery' - a series of portraits not seen in the UK since the 1840s - and seeks to reposition this remarkable artist for a contemporary audience. The authors explore the origins of Catlin's achievement: his ambition to record what he believed to be dying cultures, and his collecting activities, educational intentions and methods of exhibition and display, which demonstrate the growth of a new sensibility towards native peoples. While Catlin's work is well known in the USA, especially in Washington DC, where most of it is still housed in the Smithsonian Institution, George Catlin's Indian Gallery will help to bring these spectacular pictures to new audiences in Britain and around the world. 0Exhibition: National Portrait Gallery, London, UK (4.3.-23.6.2013). 0
