Abstract: "Following more than a decade of research on various kinds of inauthentic Native American art, Janet Berlo presents a series of cases that demonstrate the range and complexity of the issues at stake. From Native and non-Native artists commissioned by Native communities to make replicas of original Native artistic works to non-Natives creating Native style art for commercial gain to uses of pastiche and obfuscation in creating artistic objects for various purposes, Berlo looks at misrepresentation and replication in nuanced and careful detail"--

Abstract: "Regna Darnell offers a critical reexamination of the theoretical orientation of the Americanist tradition, centered on the work Franz Boas, and the professionalization of anthropology as an academic discipline in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. History of Theory and Method in Anthropology reveals the theory schools, institutions, and social networks of scholars and fieldworkers primarily interested in the ethnography of North American Indigenous peoples. Darnell's fifty-year career entails foundational writings in the four fields of the discipline: cultural anthropology, ethnography, linguistics, and physical anthropology. Leading researchers, theorists, and fieldwork subjects include Claude Lévi-Strauss, Franz Boas, Benjamin Lee Whorf, John Wesley Powell, Frederica de Laguna, Dell Hymes, George Stocking Jr., and Anthony F. C. Wallace, as well as nineteenth-century Native language classifications, ethnography, ethnohistory, social psychology, structuralism, rationalism, biologism, mentalism, race science, human nature and cultural relativism, ethnocentrism, standpoint-based epistemology, collaborative research, and applied anthropology. History of Theory and Method in Anthropology is an essential volume for scholars and undergraduate and graduate students to enter into the history of the inductive theory schools and methodologies of the Americanist tradition and its legacies. Abstract: "How Chinese migration to the world's goldfields upended global power and economics and forged modern conceptions of race. In roughly five decades, between 1848 and 1899, more gold was removed from the earth than had been mined in the 3,000 preceding years. But friction between Chinese and white settlers on the goldfields of California, Australia, and South Africa catalyzed a global battle over "the Chinese Question": Would the United States and the British Empire outlaw Chinese immigration? This distinguished history of the Chinese diaspora and global capitalism chronicles how a feverish alchemy of race and money brought Chinese to the West and reshaped the nineteenth-century world, from Europe's subjugation of China to the rise of the international gold standard and the invention of racist, anti-Chinese stereotypes that linger to this day. Drawing on ten years of research across five continents, prize-winning historian Mae Ngai argues that Chinese exclusion was not extraneous to the emergent global economy but an integral part of it"--

Abstract: The artists featured in 'Tell Freedom' are inspiring representatives of a generation of South African artists who have grown up largely since the abolition of apartheid. They carry the burden of their country's history of violence and injustice, but at the same time look to the future and the rest of the world with optimism. Their work examines and comments on social, political and economic injustices rooted in the colonial era and period of apartheid. Through it, they seek to understand their own position in the changing society of South Africa and at the same time to imagine the future.

Abstract: "The subject of race and identity is a burning issue which continues to occupy the attention not only of South Africans but also the wider residents of the continent of Africa and those who are Africans in the Diaspora. The outburst of xenophobic attacks against foreigners mostly of Black African origins in some communities of Kwa-Zulu Natal and areas of Johannesburg during 2008 and 2015 has raised questions about the social cohesion of South African society linked to unresolved structural identity issues bequeathed by the nation's past colonial and apartheid legacy. This publication argues that there is an embedded schizophrenic identity crisis within the society that requires scholarly interrogation. The chapters assemble scholarly voices from different ethnic groups that examine the central research question of this study: Who is an African? Within the wider Southern African context, identity and ethnicity politics are framing nationalist economic policies and are impacting on social cohesion within many countries. Writing from different social and racial locations the authors have critically engaged with the central question and offer some important insights that can serve as a resource for all nations grappling with issues of race, ethnicity, identity constructed politics, and social cohesion."

Abstract: One may visit famous gardens in Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka--or one may visit Japanese-styled gardens in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Paris, São Paulo, or Singapore. We often view these gardens as representative of the essence of Japanese culture. Christian Tagsold argues, however, that the idea of the Japanese garden has less do to with Japan's history and traditions, and more to do with its interactions with the West. The first Japanese gardens in the West appeared at the world's fairs in Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876 and others soon appeared in museums, garden expositions, the estates of the wealthy, and public parks. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Japanese garden, described as mystical and attuned to nature, had usurped the popularity of the Chinese garden, so prevalent in the eighteenth century. While Japan sponsored the creation of some gardens in a series of acts of cultural diplomacy, the Japanese style was interpreted and promulgated by Europeans and Americans as well. But the fashion for Japanese gardens would decline in inverse relation to the rise of Japanese militarism in the 1930s, their rehabilitation coming in the years following World War II, with the rise of the Zen meditation garden style that has come to dominate the Japanese garden in the West. Tagsold has visited over eighty gardens in ten countries with an eye to questioning how these places signify Japan in non-Japanese geographical and cultural contexts. He ponders their history, the reasons for their popularity, and their connections to geopolitical events, explores their shifting aesthetic, and analyzes those elements which convince visitors that these gardens are "authentic." He concludes that a constant process of cultural translation between Japanese and Western experts and commentators marked these spaces as expressions of otherness, creating an idea of the Orient and its distinction from the West.--Publisher website

Abstract: "Not Fit to Stay: Public Health Panics and South Asian Exclusion examines how and why South Asians were prevented from immigrating to British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California between 1900 and 1920. In the first decades of the twentieth century, all Asian immigrants to Canada and the United States faced opposition to their arrival and settlement. While racism and fear of labour competition were at the heart of this resistance, panic soon swept up and down the West Coast of North America over unsubstantiated public health concerns. Public leaders--including physicians, union leaders, civil servants, journalists, and politicians--latched on to these health concerns as the basis for the exclusion of the South Asians, who were said to suffer from medical conditions and diseases attributed to their race. Even though many officials knew the public health argument had no grounds, they promoted it to support their racist views and concerns about labour. Legislation to restrict the immigration of South Asians took effect in Canada in 1908 and in the United States in 1917. This book is an important study of how white North Americans saw first-wave South Asian immigrants as separate from, and inferior to, other groups in the evolving racial hierarchy on the West Coast of North America."--

Abstract: "This revisionary perspective on South Africa's celebrated Constitutional Court draws on historical and empirical sources alongside conventional legal analysis to show how support from the African National Congress government and other political actors has underpinned the Court's landmark cases, which are often applauded too narrowly as merely judicial achievements. Standard accounts see the Court as overseer of a negotiated constitutional compromise and as the looked-to guardian of that constitution against the rising threat of the ANC. However, in reality South African successes have been built on broader and more admirable constitutional politics to a degree no previous account has described or acknowledged. The Court has responded to this context with a substantially consistent but widely misunderstood pattern of deference and intervention. Although a work in progress, this institutional self-understanding represents a powerful effort by an emerging court, as one constitutionally serious actor among others, to build a constitution"--

Abstract: At the foothills of the Himalaya, along the border separating India and Nepal, Raji nomads still hunt for wild honey. They scale the trees of the great Terai forest, risking their lives to harvest the honey of the apis laboriosa - the largest migratory bee in the world. Both slave and master of the bees, Bahadur defies the towering trees and braves death for the survival of his people. After discovering written accounts of the Raji' way of life, photographer and filmmaker Eric Valli set out to discover what had become of these nomadic people.

Abstract: "This rich volume not only deals with political traditions but gives attention to religious and communal intellectual practices. The scope covers interpretations of traditions such as African nationalism, Afrikaner thought, Black Consciousness, Christianity, feminism, Gandhian ways, Hinduism, Jewish responses, liberalism, Marxism, Muslim voices, Pan Africanism and posivitism. Powerful institutions and individuals were central to the various colonising and apartheid projects that directly controlled and subordinated much of the population. But the social engineering they wrought failed - and spectacularly so. In the wake of this, unintended and unforeseen spaces for individual agency and for the discovery of traditions of thinking have helped change the way we live today. "Only by thinking about these, the ideas that made us who we are, more deeply can we re-imagine our country and the world," says co-editor Peter Vale. This explains why this book, which looks at our past and our present through different lenses, fills an important gap in South Africa's historiography and says new things about its politics."--Back cover

Abstract: They were known in history as brutal savages, fearless slave raiders and above all - pirates. Hailing from the Sulu Sea region in the Southern regions of the Philippines, the Ilanun, Balangingi Samal & Taosug tribes raided and plundered settlements in the Philippines, Borneo, Java, the Straits of Malacca and all over South East Asia in the search for human cargo to feed the growing demands of the slave trade in the 16th to 19th century. They wielded deadly weapons, were well organized and built formidable fast warships that ran circles around the bigger and heavier Western ships. These men, either sanctioned by their respective Sultanates or their own tribal leaders, defied colonial occupation and rule, instigating a wave of terror throughout the archipelago for more than 300 years. But there is evidence that they were not merely the savages they were made out to be. Some historians have argued that these were indigenous people merely defending their way of life from the conquering colonial forces. Others have said that we need to put this violence and slave raids into the proper perspective. This is a story of men who clung fiercely to their faith, eluding a technologically superior foe. It is also a story of how these men who lived by the sword, eventually died by it. So were they pirates and barbarians? Or warriors and freedom fighters? Discover the truth behind the Raiders of the Sulu Sea, and judge for yourself.

Abstract: In Digoli, a small village in the Indian Himalayas, "magical" rituals and arranged marriages remain a common part of the mountain culture. But with the arrival of mobile phones, the extension of the radio relay system, and the exodus of men to the cities, modernity has begun to exert its influence. One beacon of Digoli's newfound innovation is the development of Avani, a cooperative that produces delicate silk. For fifteen years, Avani has enabled women to become socially and economically independent. Hema, one member of the co-op, finds herself torn between a traditional lifestyle working in the fields to provide food for her parents, and the opportunity to weave silk for Avani. Hema is chosen to travel to New Delhi to sell silk, but ultimately chooses to returns home. At age twenty-nine, when she's considered too old for marriage, she weds a jobless poor man named Harish. Without property, cattle, or money, they move to a remote village, but Avani soon proposes that Hema start a weaving center to teach locals, including her husband. Filmmaker and noted artist Catherine Addor-Confino punctuates the film with her vivid paintings, adding an imaginative element to this inspiring story of one woman's entrepreneurial spirit.

Abstract: The documentary follows the daily life which revolves around the ancient Erder wells, throughout the long dry season until the long-awaited rain comes. Every day the young shepherds form human chains, allowing them to reach the depths of the well and bring up the water. Their hard work is accompanied by a song which seems to draw the great herds as they slowly come near. After days and days of walking across dry and dusty land they are finally able to quench their thirst. During this time the well becomes a small integrated social system. By observing this world we can understand the delicate balance of the relationship between man and Nature that governs the existence of nomadic people in the Horn of Africa. In modern times, their survival is threatened by profound climatic changes and significant alterations in the natural rain cycle. Through interaction with several characters from this place, the film introduces us to a water management system that allows the Borana shepherds to manage the small quantity of available water as the property and right of everyone, in one of the driest inhabited regions in the world.

Abstract: "Popular Politics in the History of South Africa, 1400-1948 offers a newly inclusive vision of South Africa's past. Drawing largely from original sources, Paul Landau presents a history of the politics of the country's people, from the time of their early settlements in the elevated heartlands, through the colonial era, to the dawn of Apartheid. A practical tradition of mobilization, alliance, and amalgamation persisted, mutated, and occasionally vanished from view; it survived against the odds in several forms, in tribalisms, Christian assemblies, and other, seemingly hybrid movements; and it continues today. Landau treats southern Africa broadly, concentrating increasingly on the southern highveld and ultimately focusing on a transnational movement called the "Samuelites." He shows how people's politics in South Africa were suppressed and transformed, but never entirely eliminated"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Breeding Cells is a film from the laboratory of reproduction. A fertility clinic is a place where human reproduction is separated from sex and anatomized into bio/technological components. There fertilization is made visible and manipulable on a cellular level while the couples themselves seem to become marginal participants in a process that involves a large number of different professionalized agents and technologies. Recorded in the ward of reproductional medicine at Charite Hospital Berlin, this documentary approaches a scientific environment with an experimental ethnographic gaze. The filmmakers meet an open and quite unexcited "fertility team", who consider themselves simply assistants of nature. But what is nature in a hospital environment that is highly regulated by procedural methods, doctors conventions and conservative laws? Closely describing the routines and moral concerns of the medical staff, the film is portraying a transition time, when biotechnological science fiction is turning into everyday life.

Abstract: A once unremarkable site of multi-faith pilgrimage to a Sufi Saint has been transformed and its local history rewritten - the film documents the journey of Charlotte, a student undertaking her PhD research in India, who, whilst researching religious pilgrimages, stumbles upon the politicisation of a pilgrimage site in western India. The research suggests that the pilgrimage site of Kalo Dungar or Black Mountain, situated in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, provides a micro-example of current political issues in India today, where by the 'unity in diversity' of the country is slowly being broken-down destroying any hope of communal peace.

In 1991, Kantata Takwa performed in a huge concert, singing songs about the oppressiveness of Soeharto's new order regime. Live footage of this performance is intercut with artists' interviews, and a loose narrative of a people who are ultimately killed by their oppressors. Due to its political content, Kantata Takwa was 18 years in the making, and only released in 2008. Abstract: This documentary is made by Andy Lawrence in collaboration with independent midwife Judith Kurutac. They met in Kurutac's thirteenth year of practice when she supported Lawrence's partner, Helen Knowles (Birth Rites' curator), through the birth of their second child at home. For Kurutac the collaboration was a chance for film to capture the important relationship between a woman and her attendant in pregnancy and birth. The film is a personal journey, examining the roles the collaborators play as father and midwife, stimulated by their engagement with two couples who encounter very different experiences of birth. The film draws us into an examination of the connection between birth and death to explore what role fear plays in childbirth and how the ways in which we deal with fear affect the way in which a child is born.

Abstract: Every winter, over a period of six days, the lamas of Lingthem's village monastery hold their annual cham. These dramatic ritual masked dances impart elementary Buddhist teachings while providing entertainment to villagers. Their main purpose is to remove obstacles and ward off misfortune for the village, its inhabitants and the monastery. However, for lamas and more serious Buddhist practitioners, these cham and their rituals hold deep philosophical meanings. The dances were beautifully filmed by Dawa Tsering Lepcha in his own village monastery in the Lepcha reserve of Dzongu, North Sikkim. In the course of this village event, the deities who emerge in the period between death and rebirth make their rhythmic appearances followed by the Lord of Death who judges one's good and bad deeds in the after life. This film is the second produced by the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology as part of its visual anthropology project. This training program for indigenous filmmakers aims to produce a documented video record of Sikkim's vanishing indigenous and Buddhist cultures. Its primary purpose is to record and preserve the meaning and proper performance of Sikkim's rituals within their social and economic context.

Hungary's accession to the EU has presented new challenegs and difficulties to them continuing their traditional trade and lifestyle. Abstract: "Alampu is a beautiful and exceedingly remote village in Nepal. The majority of the settlers there are Thami people, one of the indigenous groups of Nepal. More than 90 percent of them are involved in the slate production at Alampu. This film includes technical details about the slate production in the mountainside mine, and how the slate is worked prior to distribution. In the film we see the social relationships, co-operation between the miners, and the intimacy of the mining families. Strong women perform the tough and arduous work alongside the men. They have to carry heavy slate loads far to sell them. The film also describes the socio-cultural life of the village and its interaction with the environment. The activities of the men and women in the mine, as well as in the village, have an almost poetic dimension."--RAI.

They are the Baaka pygmies, who sing and dance to appeal to the spirits of hunting and honey gathering. Their life is a never-ending song that expresses their intense spirituality and their deep communion with the forest. Produced under the High Patronage of Unesco, this film follows the daily lives of a group of Baaka, who live only of hunting, honey gathering and singing. Our aim is to present this unique culture, and to show that if it were to disappear, the world would be poorer for it.

Abstract: "Business Process Outsourcing" is the fastest growing industry in the world. In India, approximately 350,000 people are currently working in call centres to maintain the contact between western companies and their customers. Vikhee Uppal is one of them. From a busy office in Calcutta, he pretends to be a guy named Ethan Reed and calls Americans, Brits and Australians to try and sell them cell phones and subscriptions. Vikhee hopes to make it in this sector. On the bulletin board, we see that he and his colleagues keep track of who sells the most. The Americans are the most impolite: they yell at the salespeople and hang up on them. The English, on the contrary, are the most willing to listen to their sales pitch. Even though Vikhee pretends to be a westerner at work, Indian traditions remain very important for him. He wants to get married to a girl from Punjab, and if he doesn't succeed, his family will find a bride for him. At work, Vekhee gets tutored in English. Each night, he watches English soccer matches to see what the people on the other end of the line actually look like.
