    Abstract: Die Seidenstrasse, die Ostasien mit dem Mittelmeerraum verbindet, ist zum Inbegriff einer frühen Globalisierung geworden. Thomas O. Höllmann schaut von China aus auf das legendenumrankte Routennetzwerk. Er beschreibt anschaulich, wie die Menschen reisten und wie Güter und Ideen weitervermittelt wurden. Ein Ausblick macht deutlich, warum China mit der "Neuen Seidenstrasse" auf das symbolische Kapital der alten Verbindungen setzt. Seit der Antike nutzten Gesandte, Händler, Missionare und Abenteurer die Seidenstrasse. Auf dem Landweg passierten sie dabei lebensfeindliche Wüsten wie die Taklamakan, überwanden hoch aufragende Gebirge wie den Pamir und verweilten in betriebsamen Oasenstädten wie Buchara, Samarkand oder Turfan. Davon künden zahllose archäologische Zeugnisse, von denen viele erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten erschlossen wurden.Thomas O. Höllmann rekonstruiert mit ihrer Hilfe sowie anhand von historiographischen Quellen, fesselnden Reisebeschreibungen und lebensnahen Gedichten, welche Waren nach China gelangten, wie der Buddhismus und andere Religionen im Reich der Mitte rezipiert wurden und welche Schlüsseltechnologien, allen voran Papier und Buchdruck, von dort aus ihren Siegeszug über die ganze Welt antraten. Das Buch geht den ökonomischen Grundlagen, politischen Motiven und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen des Austauschs nach und führt faszinierend konkret vor Augen, was Globalisierung in einem Zeitraum von rund zwei Jahrtausenden bedeutete.     Abstract: "An untold story that reshapes our understanding of Chinese and Tibetan history. From 1956 to 1962, devastating military conflicts took place in China's southwestern and northwestern regions. Official record at the time scarcely made mention of the campaign, and in the years since only lukewarm acknowledgment of the violence has surfaced. When the Iron Bird Flies, by Jianglin Li, breaks this decades-long silence to reveal for the first time a comprehensive and explosive picture of the six years that would prove definitive in modern Tibetan and Chinese history. The CCP referred to the campaign as "suppressing the Tibetan rebellion." It would lead to the 14th Dalai Lama's exile in India, as well as the Tibetan diaspora in 1959, though the battles lasted three additional years after these events. Featuring key figures in modern Chinese history, the battles waged in this period covered a vast geographical region. This book offers a portrait of chaos, deception, heroism, and massive loss. Beyond the significant death toll across the Tibetan regions, the war also destroyed most Tibetan monasteries in a concerted effort to eradicate local religion and scholarship. Despite being considered a military success, to this day, the operations in the agricultural regions remain unknown. As large numbers of Tibetans have self-immolated in recent years to protest Chinese occupation, Li shows that the largest number of cases occurred in the sites most heavily affected by this hidden war. She argues persuasively that the events described in this book will shed more light on our current moment, and will help us understand the unrelenting struggle of the Tibetan people for their freedom"--

Er geht wiederholt auf die Entwicklungsgeschichte der kommunistischen Partei unter den Führern Mao Zedong und Deng Xiaoping ein und vergleicht Xi mit ihnen. Der Text lässt Kritik und Distanz vermissen und setzt Vorwissen über die politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse Chinas voraus, ist aber gut lesbar. (3)

    Abstract: This volume is an updated and expanded version of the authors original book, first published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and based on his cum laude doctoral dissertation. That volume discussed how the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence drowned in the first war between a communist and a non-aligned state. This new edition reproduces the original text, but supplements it considerably in light of subsequent developments and official records and reports only later released or leaked to the public. It places Sino-Indian relations in the wider, current context of the rise of China, the position of Tibet and the disorganised state of Asia. The border dispute did not prevent substantial economic relations developing between the two countries and visits taking place at the highest political level. But it still gives rise to almost daily incursions, and in the current climate, the risk of a clash is growing, as forces have been strengthened and most of the Line of Actual Control has not been demarcated. This thought-provoking volume sheds light on what is still a complex and uneasy relationship

    Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China hat 1,3 Milliarden Einwohner. Davon gehören 8,4 % zu 55 nationalen Minderheiten. Sie bewohnen 60 % des Staatsgebietes - insbesondere in den strategisch wichtigen Grenzregionen. Nach einem längeren historischen Überblick der staatlichen Nationalitätenpolitik "zwischen Sinisierung und Diskriminierung" stellt Klemens (siehe vom selben Autor: "Dalai Lama", BA 6/08) diese Völker, die er in mehrere Gruppen einteilt (tibeto-birmanisch, mongolisch, tungusisch etc.), einzeln vor. Bei den Tibetern und Uiguren finden sich längere Darlegungen auch zur zentralstaatlichen Repression und zum Widerstand gegen Beijing. Die meisten anderen ethnischen Gruppen, die zum Teil sehr knapp porträtiert werden, sind inzwischen sinisiert oder akzeptieren die Vorherrschaft der Han-Chinesen. Es folgt ein abschließender Artikel zur Renaissance religiöser Gemeinschaften. Klemens plädiert für eine tolerante Nationalitätenpolitik, bei der den Minderheiten Sonderautonomie-Rechte gewährt werden. Nur so könnten sezessionistische Bewegungen wirksam geschwächt werden, ohne Minderheitenrechte zu verletzen. (2 S) (Andreas Ufen)

    Abstract: Adeeb Khalid combines insights from the study of both Islam and Soviet history in this sophisticated analysis of the ways that Muslim societies in Central Asia have been transformed by the Soviet presence in the region. Arguing that the utopian Bolshevik project of remaking the world featured a sustained assault on Islam that destroyed patterns of Islamic learning and thoroughly de-Islamized public life, Khalid demonstrates that Islam became synonymous with tradition and was subordinated to powerful ethnonational identities that crystallized during the Soviet period. He shows how this legacy endures today and how, for the vast majority of the population, a return to Islam means the recovery of traditions destroyed under Communism.

Verständlich, ausreichend für grundlegende Informationen (und damit gerade für kleinere Büchereien nützlich) füllt der Band eine Bestandslücke.

    Abstract: In 48 Artikeln - überwiegend zu gesellschaftspolitischen Themen - wird in dem vom Verein "philippinenbüro" betreuten Buch die gegenwärtige Situation auf den Philippinen dargestellt. In populärwissenschaftlichem Stil und in gut verständlicher Sprache werden viele fundierte Basisinformationen, aber auch aktuelles Insiderwissen problemorientiert vermittelt. Soziale Gerechtigkeit und Armut sind dabei die Leitthemen, die durch eine Vielzahl von Einzelaspekten (z.B. Landreform, Umweltzustand, Gesundheitswesen, Sextourismus, Bürgerrechte, Religion oder Entwicklungshilfe) analysiert werden. Das Werk ist aber eher ein Lesebuch und verfügt über recht wenige (schwarz-weiße) Abbildungen. Besonders mehr und bessere Karten wären wünschenswert gewesen. Unter dem Strich ist es trotzdem ein wertvolles Buch für den Asien-Bestand, da es mit Schülern, Studenten, Touristen, kirchlichen und Entwicklungshilfegruppen eine große Zahl von potentiellen Nutzern anspricht.     Abstract: Mit dem Einmarsch der Chinesen in Tibet 1950 und bis in die jüngste Zeit gab es zeitweise schlimme Zustände der Unterdrückung; begreiflich der Wunsch nach Unabhängigkeit von China. Die Autoren des Bandes wollen für eine Unterstützung der Tibeter in diesem Kampf werben. Aus dieser Absicht erklärt sich wohl die teilweise einseitige Betrachtung der geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen, die sich in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur - etwa in dem Standardwerk "China-Handbuch" (vgl. 325, 103) - jedoch anders darstellen: Danach anerkennen z.B. England und Rußland 1906/07 die chinesische "Oberherrschaft", von einem "souveränen Staat bis 1950" kann also kaum die Rede sein. Auch manche andere zitierten Fakten sind nicht nur strittig, sondern unzutreffend, z.B. in dem kurzen Kapitel zum historischen Buddha. Man kann aus dem Buch also eigentlich nicht zitieren; es bleibt die gute Absicht, dazu beizutragen, die menschenrechtswidrigen Zustände und die chinesische Militärpräsenz (die in dieser Form in Tibet erstmalig ist) zu beenden - im Sinne des Dalai Lama: friedlich.     Abstract: Die politische Länderkunde aus der bekannten Reihe stellt in diesem Band eines der unbekanntesten Länder des ehemaligen Ostblocks mit Schwerpunkt auf die postkommunistische Entwicklung vor. Bulgarien ist Bewerber um die Mitgliedschaft in der EU, jedoch liegen Erkenntnisse über die politische und wirtschaftliche Situation des Landes in der Literatur kaum vor. Der Autor (heute Gesandter des World University Service in Sarajewo) lebte seit 1994 aufgrund von Lehrtätigkeiten in Sofia und Vama, hatte Kontakte zu führenden Politikern und beschreibt sachkundig und informativ zunächst Landeskunde und Geschichte, dann schwerpunktmäßig die Politik seit 1945 und speziell seit 1990 mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der wirtschaftlichen Situation und der außenpolitischen Beziehungen. Der gut gegliederte, durch zahlreiche Themenkästchen (z.B. zu Umweltthemen) eingängige Text vermittelt aktuelle Informationen und füllt eine Informationslücke.
