Abstract: The weather-dependent, insecure yields from the dry-farming of cereals are supplemented by the produce of animal husbandry in Central Anatolia. Apart from sizeable sheep- and goathers 1 to 5 waterbuffalo or cows are kept per household as work animals and for the production of milk and butter. The film shows a cow with a calf being milked by a woman in the yard of a farm. With a separator driven by hand cream is produced, collected during a week and finally worked into butter in a wooden churn with a pestle. The film was taken in a village of muslim emigrants (muhacir) from Russia. These westsiberian Tatars of Uzbek origin (buharist), settled in Turkey in the early 20th century, do however not differ in their economic activities from the "native" Turks (yerli).

Abstract: On the small, often stony and steep wheat-fields of the Anatolian dry farming regions, cereals are mown with scythes by most of the smaller peasants. During the harvesting season practically the whole family works on the wheat-fields; while the men, stropping the scythes from time to time, mow the wheat, the women and older children collect the rows of stalks with one- and three prongued forks and stack them in the form of loose sheaves onto big ring-like heaps, where the wheat is left until the threshing starts. Finally the harvested field is worked over for left-over stalks with big wooden rakes.
