Abstract: John Palmer arrived in a Wichí community, located in Argentina, thirty years ago as an anthropologist - today he has married a Wichí woman with whom he has five sons in the last 5 years, who babble English, Wichí, and Spanish words. As the legal advisor of the Lapacho Mocho community, and as a part of the family, he works to obtain Qatu's freedom, a member of the Wichí community who has been in jail for 5 years waiting for an oral hearing on a charge of abusing his wife's daughter. The film gains depth and impact from its more intimate domestic interludes involving John's wife Tojweya their young children - including a baby only weeks old. So while Palmer has achieved considerable eminence in his field, winning the Royal Anthropological Institute's Lucy Mair Medal in 2009, his immersion into Wichí culture, history and customs has become much more than a matter of academic ethnography.

Abstract: Laboya is situated on the southern coast of West Sumba (Eastern Indonesia), an island never introduced to Hindu culture. Not until the beginning of the 20th century did Christianity and then Islam reach the Sumbanese. Even nowadays most people say they believe in Marapu, a term referring to their ancestors. It is the task of the living to nourish and pray to ancestral spirits in order to receive their blessings. Padu and Nyale are the two ceremonies marking the annual agricultural cycle (rice, maize and cassava). Padu means bitterness. October is a month of 'bitterness' and 'heat' (hala) causing people to fall ill, and preventing animals and plants from thriving. The Padu ceremony is to get rid of these ills, to let the life-giving water flow again and to renew social bonds. The Padu ritual also serves to prepare the rain rituals of Nyale which take place in February, when the rice planting season is re-opened. During the Nyale rituals the arrival of Nyale seaworms (announcing heavy rainfall) means the ancestral blessing has been given. (Research footage of low technical quality). Part 2 of a threepart DVD edition.

Part 3 of a threepart DVD edition.

Abstract: In the barren landscape of remote western Tibet lies the ruins of a mysterious kingdom. A kingdom whose capital was 3600 meters high on the Tibetan plateau. A kingdom that offers archaeological treasures that compare with Italy's Pompeii. This kingdom once controlled the trade in gold, silk and spices between India and China. It was a kingdom of fabulous wealth and great religious significance. For two centuries it was the cradle of Himalayan Buddhism. Yet this spiritual and commercial hub, which prospered for seven centuries, vanished without a trace in 1630. Until now the mystery of what was the Tibetan kingdom of Guge has remained unresolved. The Italian archaeologist Guiseppe Tucci was the first to investigate the existence of the Guge kingdom in the early 1930's. Since then, the extraordinary altitude, hostile terrain and political upheaval have made sure that only a select few have travelled to the region to make serious study. Guge - Lost Kingdom of Tibet journeys to to the extreme corner of West Tibet with two of the world's experts, Tibetan historian Tsering Gyalpo and American archaeologist John Bellezza. Their aim is to unravel this mystery.

Abstract: Der Kawah Ijen (Grüner Krater) ist ein aktiver Vulkan auf der Ostseite der Insel Java.
Abstract: The Kawah Ijen (green crater) is an active volcano situated on the extreme east side of the island of Java, where the biggest hydrochloric and sulfuric acid lake in the world is located. Since 1968 forced sulfur miners work by day and night, in untenable conditions in a hostile, toxic and harmful crater. Gathering the "yellow gold" these subhumans are paid more than the national average at the price of a life span reduced by the gases they breathe and the weight they carry.

Abstract: The film captures ordinary acts, which in the face of death become a ritual, and gives space to the subtle, nearly invisible gestures and movements, which make the suffering and insecurities more bearable: Caressing a cat, a handshake or a fleeting glance; pictures and moments in death and grief, which we avoid in every day life, feeling insecure, fearful or ashamed.

(vgl. Film C 12437 "Indo Pino")
Abstract: Among the Wana people, semi-nomads from the Indonesian forest, Indo Pino is a shaman recognized by everybody. Her nephew, who is also a shaman's son, converted to Christianity some months ago and is now preaching apocalyptic visions. And for him, if these visions come from God, the visions of the shamans inevitably must come from Satan. Through the Christian concepts of sin and original fault, good and evil notions are revised. The traditional healing practices of the shamans are heavily under attack. Under our eyes a fight between two worlds of religious belief is taking place. (see also film C 12437 "Indo Pino")

Abstract: Aslam verkauft Medizin zur Linderung sexueller Probleme auf den Straßen Neu Delhis.
Abstract: This is a film about performance, and the fear of not being able to perform successfully. In Meena Bazar in old Delhi, the tenuous aspirations of men and boys are reflected in their faces as they cluster around Aslam's street stall to listen to his spiel about how to enhance male sexual performance. Near Aslam’s stalls is a school for wrestlers (akhara), where discipline and abstinence from impure sex are encouraged by the guru. In an adjacent tea shop, men appreciate storytelling that invokes the humorous and the fantastic, offering an escape from the dreariness of their daily lives. All of these men have, in their different ways, found a way to perform life's tasks in an insecure world.

Abstract: Das Arbeiterviertel Sunder Nagri, "schöne Stadt", liegt am Rande Neu-Delhis.
Abstract: Sunder Nagri (Beautiful City) is a small working class colony on the margins of India's capital city, Delhi. Most families residing here come from a community of weavers. The last ten years have seen a gradual disintegration of the handloom tradition of this community under the globalisation regime. The families have to cope with change as well as reinvent themselves to eke out a living. The City Beautiful is the story of two families struggling to make sense of a world, which keeps pushing them to the margins.

Abstract: In Han myth the dragon symbolizes power as he rules over the element water, i.e. the outcome of the next harvest, peoples' health and wealth. His temper can ruin everything through extreme floods or draught. The Daban Well in the outskirts of Jianshui dates back to the Ming Dynasty, and although tap water is available, people prefer the well's water and perform rituals in honor of the Dragon King.

With their home-made pushcarts street peddlers are considered a threat to the city's image building.
Abstract: Life has changed a lot in Bhilai after the Steel Plant has been started. A grandfather explains to his grandson how the situation arose between industrialization and traditional agricultural life. The traditional joint family feels the differences between the common every day life (village, market place, and fieldwork) and the so-called developments of industrialization like jobs and regular income or higher education for children. Traditionally the people were paddy growers, like the grandfather. They had to give up their land for the Bhilai Steel Plant. All village people were afraid of what would come in the future. Many took the offered jobs. As a member of the local panchayat he tried to organize and support paddy growing. Now he combines both - industrial job and traditional agriculture - successfully and well-respected. But the question still remains.

Abstract: The film, being part of the continued effort of IWF to contribute video productions to the history of anthropology like the preceding film on Sir Raymond Firth, is a portrait of the Norwegian anthropologist Fredrik Barth, one of the most important contemporary representatives of his discipline whose reputation both as a fieldworker and a theoretician has been renowned for more than four decades. Barth carried out fieldwork in the Sudan, in Iran, Oman, Pakistan, New Guinea, Bali and Bhutan. In the film, he talks, at times together with his wife Unni Wikan, to Peter Loizos and also to Lone Abenth-Sperschneider on his personal life and academic career, the importance of his fieldwork for his theoretical findings, the development of Norwegian anthropology, his cooperation with Unni Wikan and many other topics of interest for anthropologists. Impressions from teaching students in Bergen and lecturing at the Museum of Ethnography in Oslo, as well as glimpses of his personal environment in Oslo round off the film to a vivid portrait of a remarkable anthropologist.

Abstract: The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

Abstract: The film focuses on the problem of rural development. It indicates the importance of culturally sensitive development strategies. In the early thirties, a large canal irrigation scheme was triggered off in the Mysore district in South India. Mangala, an irrigated village, is on the way to becoming a model growth centre; increased per acre productivity and extension of irrigated acreages has fascilitated the land carrying capacity to accommodate increasing numbers. Mangala continues to be an introverted village; villagers continue to have a strong social identity and feel proud of their village achievements. By contrast, Kalenahalli, the dry village, has become more and more village extroverted, so much so that social anomie has set in and the village will soon disappear altogether becoming absorbed as a suburb by the nearby town of Mandya. The film not only presents how the villagers themselves see the changes that have taken place, but also how one of them, T. Thimmegowda, now a senior administrative official, perceives the development. The study on which the film is based was begun by Prof. T. Scarlett Epstein in 1954 and has been continued up to the present day. It is the only study in the whole of India in which the same researcher covers a period as long as 43 years.
