    Abstract: Das Dorfbild der an den Flüssen gelegenen Siedlungen der Ngaju-Dayak wird durch eine Vielzahl von Holzobjekten und -skulpturen geprägt, die in enger Verbindung zum Totenkult stehen. Der Film berichtet über ihre kultische Bedeutung, zeigt das Schnitzen neuer, aber auch verwitterte alte Figuren, die für die Dörfer nördlich der Stadt Sampit in ihren wichtigsten Formen dokumentiert werden: Die Hampatong - Menschenfiguren mit Stellvertreterfunktion; die Sandong-Tulang - auf Pfosten gestellte Beinhäuschen mit der Weltenschlange Naga am Giebel; zurückgelassene Masken an Grabstellen sowie den auf hohen Masten thronenden Nashornvogel als Verkörperung des Obergottes Mahaltala.
    Abstract: The "villagescapes" of the settlements of the Ngaju-Dayak, which lie on rivers, are characterised by a multitude of wooden objects and sculptures, which are closely linked to the cult of the dead. The film reports on their cultic importance, shows the carving of new, but also weathered old, figures, which are documented for the villages north to the city of Sampit in their most important forms. The Hampatong human figures, which have a representation function; the Sandong-Tulang, charnel houses built on posts with Naga, the world serpent, on their gables; abandoned masks on grave sites as well as the rhinoceros bird enthroned on high masts as the embodiment of the head god, Mahaltala.

    Abstract: Patamban ist ein auf Töpferei spezialisiertes Dorf. Die Töpferei wird in den Familien vor allem von den Frauen betrieben. Am Beispiel einer Großfamilie wird die flexible Arbeitsorganisation gezeigt, die es den Frauen ermöglicht, neben der Töpferei auch ihren alltäglichen Arbeiten wie Kochen, Waschen, Putzen usw. nachzugehen. Die angewendete Modeltechnik erlaubt eine schnelle Anpassung der Arbeit an die Notwendigkeiten. Die Männer widmen sich vor allem dem Ackerbau, helfen aber auch in der Töpferei mit. Die Zusammenarbeit in der Familie, die Einbindung aller drei Generationen in die Arbeit, sichert ihnen die wirtschaftliche Grundlage. Ein differenziertes Tonwarenangebot erlaubt eine schnelle Reaktion auf die Wünsche des Marktes. Entwicklungsorganisationen fördern das Handwerk durch Wettbewerbe und Töpfereimärkte, z. B. anläßlich der Fiesta Cristo Rey in Patamban. Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht Genoveva Ruíz, eine der erfolgreichsten Töpferinnen des Dorfes, die im Interview von ihrer Arbeit und Familie erzählt.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Im ersten Teil des Festes, der von der Geheimgesellschaft Kwifon bestritten wird, tritt die Maskengruppe Felingang auf. Nachdem sich die Tänzer in dem nur Eingeweihten zugänglichen Palastbereich angekleidet haben und sie gesegnet worden sind, haben sie, begleitet von einem Xylophon und anderen Instrumenten, vor dem Palast ihren öffentlichen Tanzauftritt.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. The first part of the ceremony is held by the secret society Kwifon. Its mask group Felingang dances in public. After dressing in the restricted part of the palace and after blessings, the dancers appear in front of the spectators.

Im letzten Teil der einwöchigen Veranstaltung treten die wichtigsten Militärgesellschaften auf. Zu ihnen gehört Samba, deren Kriegsmaske begleitet von der "Frau von Samba" erscheint. Anschließend führen Medizinmänner öffentlich das Medizinritual "Kefuh Samba" durch.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. During the final part of the one-week-ceremonies the influential military societies have their public appearances. Among them is Samba, whose war-mask is accompanied by the "wife of Samba". After this medicine men carry out the medicine ritual "Kefuh Samba" in front of the spectators.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Den umfangreichsten Teil des Festes nehmen die öffentlichen Tanzauftritte der Maskengesellschaften ein. Zu ihnen gehören die machtvolle Nontang-Gesellschaft und die Mukong-Gesellschaft aus Ngashie. Ihre Maskenauftritte, begleitet von gruppeneigenen Musikinstrumenten, werden von zahlreichen Zuschauern verfolgt.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. The largest part of the feast consists of the dances of the mask societies, among them the powerful Nontang and Mukong from the village of Ngashie. Many spectators watch as these mask groups dance accompanied by music made by members of their own society.

    Abstract: Patamban besitzt drei Marienfiguren, die bei verschiedenen Familien zu Hause in Cargo stehen. An Mariä Lichtmeß (2. Februar) werden in den Gehöften Feste gefeiert, die zu diesem Cargo gehören. Die Marienfiguren werden besonders schön hergerichtet, eine Messe wird gelesen, eine Fahne wird beim Gehöft gehißt, es werden Leute eingeladen, es wird getanzt und gegessen. Das Cargo-Amt der Mariä Empfängnis übernehmen neben dem Carguero auch die vier Kerzenträgerinnen, die zu Mariä Lichtmeß der Kirche neue Kerzen stiften und dies wiederum mit einem kleinen Fest verbinden. Außerdem treten an Mariä Lichtmeß die Chereques auf, junge Leute, die sich mit häßlichen Masken verkleidet haben und im Dorf zu traditioneller Musik tanzen. Mariä Lichtmeß endet mit einem Tanz der Chereques und eines mit Feuerwerkskörpern behängten Maisrohr-Stieres auf der Plaza.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Das Fest beginnt mit dem Teil, den die Geheimgesellschaft Kwifon bestreitet. Zunächst veranstaltet Kwifon in ihrem Gehöft eine geheime Zeremonie, die "Musik von Kwifon". Dabei werden die geheimen Musikinstrumente gespielt und Mabuh, die Läufermaske von Kwifon, tritt auf.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. It starts with the activities of the secret society Kwifon. In the society's compound on the palace premises Kwifon holds a secret ceremony called "the music of Kwifon". Several secret musical instruments are played and one of Kwifon's masks, Mabuh, appears in the compound.

    Abstract: Patamban has 3 statues of Mary kept in cargo by families in their homes. At candlemas (2 Feb) the statues are decorated and Mass is read. A flag is raised and people are invited to dance and eat. New candles are donated to the church. Young people (Chereques) wearing horrible masks dance in the village to traditional music. Finally fireworks are lit on a figure of a bull, made from corn stems.

Anschließend führen sieben Medizinmänner ein öffentliches Medizinritual durch.

During the final part of the one-week-ceremonies the influential military societies have their public appearances. One of them is Nfuh. The group dances in front of the spectators accompanied by a huge ivory trumpet. Afterwards seven medicine men publicly carry out a medicine ritual.

    Abstract: Das erste und bedeutendste der alljährlichen Totengedenkfeste im Königreich Oku ist die vom Palast veranstaltete Zeremonie. Den umfangreichsten Teil des Festes nehmen die öffentlichen Tanzauftritte der Maskengesellschaften ein. Nachdem die Einzelmaske Khegebshuh durch ihren Auftritt die Kinder und andere Zuschauer erschreckt hat, folgen weitere Tanzauftritte der Masken von Ngang, der Medizingesellschaft, Ndanyi aus Lui, Subi aus Mboh und Nkie aus Lui. Auch diese Masken werden von gruppeneigenen Musikinstrumenten begleitet.
    Abstract: The first and most important of the annual feasts in Oku commemorating the deceased is the ceremony organized by the Royal Palace. The largest part of the feast consists of the dances of the mask societies. After the Khegebshuh mask has arrived from a neighbouring village and appeared in front of the spectators, other mask groups perform their dances, accompanied by their own instruments (xylophone, drums): the medicine society Ngang, Ndanyi from Lui, Subi from Mboh and Nkie from Lui.

    Abstract: Ein kleiner, alter Kiefernholz-Hängeschrank erhält eine neue Bemalung, die eine Eichenholzmaserung imitiert. Dazu werden insgesamt fünf Farbschichten (erste und zweite Grundierung, Öllasur, Wasserlasur und Klarlack) aufgetragen. Die beiden Lasuren werden mit verschiedenen Maseriergeräten bearbeitet, um einen Eichenholz-Masereffekt zu erzielen.
    Abstract: A small old wall-cabinet gets a new painting imitating oak-grain. Five coats of paint have to be applied: first and second ground coat, oilglaze, water-glaze and clear varnish. Both glazes are treated with several veining-utensils in order obtain an oakwoodgrain effect.

    Abstract: Die Teilnehmer des alle vier Jahre durchgeführten Mittwinterbrauches sammeln sich am 5. Januar in Badgastein zum Umzug. Der Perchtenzug hält vor den Häusern, die Perchten begrüßen die Bewohner durch einen Tanz und erweisen ihnen die Ehre durch eine Verneigung. Nach Segenswünschen des Perchtenhauptmannes zieht die Gruppe weiter. Am Umzug beteiligen sich außer der "schönen" Perchten auch Schreckgestalten, wie der maskierte und pelzbekleidete Klaubauf, aber auch sonstige Brauchsfiguren wie Bärenführer, Hanswurst, Habergeiß, Händler, Schleifersmann, Zapfmandel und andere. An zwei Tagen werden die Häuser der Ortschaften in der Gastein besucht. Am 6. Januar wird das Perchtenlaufen in Bad Hofgastein beendet.
    Abstract: The participants of this midwinter custom, which is carried out every four years, gather in Bad Gastein for the parade on 5 January. The Perchtenlauf procession stops in front of the houses, the Perchten greet the inhabitants with a dance and honour them by bowing. After the Perchten leader has given his good wishes, the group moves on. Other than the "beautiful" Perchten, dreadful figures, such as the "Klaubauf", who is masked and dressed in fur, but also other traditional figures such as the bear leader, "Hanswurst", "Habergeis", the trader, "Schleifersmann", barman, and others also participate in the procession. The houses of the towns in Gastein are visited for two days. The Perchenlauf activities ends in Bad Hofgastein on 6 January.

In seiner Werkstatt stellt er anschließend die Kopie eines Hinterglasbildes her. Während der Arbeit erläutert er die einzelnen Arbeitsphasen, die verschiedenen Motive des Bildes und die verwendeten Materialien. Im letzten Abschnitt des Filmes erörtert der Bildsammler François Lotz die Bedeutung der Schwarzwälder Hinterglasbilder im Elsaß.

    Abstract: Alle fünf Jahre wird in Förste/Nienstedt der "Schüttenhoff" gefeiert, eine südniedersächsische Sonderform des Schützenfestes. An fünf Tagen um Pfingsten finden Umzüge statt. Deren Hauptmerkmal ist das Verteidigen, Erstürmen und Beseitigen der meist von Anliegern oder örtlichen Vereinen errichteten Barrikaden durch drei "Kampfkompanien", die Schützen (Angriff), die Buren (Verteidigung) und die Pioniere (Räumung). Der Film zeigt zwei der fünf Umzüge, den der Männer vom Pfingstsonntag und den der Frauen vom Dienstag darauf.
    Abstract: Every fifth year in Förste/Nienstedt people gather to the "Schüttenhoff" (shooters court), a special form of Schützenfeste (festival with side-shows, including marksmanship) found in southern lower saxony. For five days at Easter processions of three "battalions" take place symbolizing the storming, defence and conquering of barricades erected by inhabitants or local associations. The three "battalions" are the riflemen (responsible for taking the barricade), the farmers (responsible for defending the barricades) and the pioneers (responsible for mopping up). Two of the five processions are shown, men on Whitsun Sunday and women on the following Tuesday.

    Abstract: Gewehrschüsse verkünden den Tod eines Menschen. Während das Grab ausgehoben wird, verabschieden sich die Familienmitglieder von dem Toten, indem sie den Leichnam mit Rotholzpulver einreiben. Vor der eigentlichen Beisetzung finden sich die Läufermasken als Vertreter der Maskengesellschaften ein, um sich von dem Toten zu verabschieden. Nach der Beisetzung - der Tote ruht in einer seitlichen Grube, am Boden des Grabes - beginnen im Grab die Tänze, während dieses wieder mit Erde gefüllt wird. Zum Abschluß der Beisetzung spielt die Militärgesellschaft ihre zum Teil geheimen Instrumente.
    Abstract: Gunshots announce a person's death. While the grave is dug the members of the family take their leave of the deceased by rubbing his body with camwood powder. Before the interment takes place, the running masks arrive as representatives of the mask society to take their leave of the deceased. After the interment - the body rests in a lateral chamber, at the bottom of the grave - dancing begins in the grave while the earth is replaced. At the conclusion of the burial the military society play their secret instruments.

    Abstract: Alljährlich am Nikolausabend feiern die Borkumer den höchsten Feiertag der Insel, Klaasohm. Jeweils zwei mit Fellmasken vermummte Gestalten in drei Altersklassen und ein als Frau verkleideter Mann, das Wiefke, laufen durch den Ort.     Abstract: On Nicholas evening (6.12.) the people of Borkum celebrate the islands most important annual celebration, Klaasohm. A man disguised as a woman ("Wiefke", widow), together with 6 disguised children run through the streets. They visit the old, the infirm and the children bringing as a present a special baked treat ("Moppe"). They also barge into pubs and restaurants and throw out the women and girls.

    Abstract: Drei Männer der Handwerkerfamilie Pantelakis aus Pyrgos demonstrieren an einer Hauswand die Technik der Kratzputzmalerei (Xista). Weiße Kalkfarbe wird auf den noch feuchten Putz aufgetragen und gleichmäßig verstrichen. Bevor Farbe und Putz trocknen, wird mit Hilfe von Gabeln und Nägeln durch die Kalkschicht hindurch die Oberfläche des Putzes an vorgezeichneten Stellen abgekratzt. Zurück bleibt eine schwarzweiß ornamentierte Fläche.
    Abstract: Three men from Pyrgos, members of the Pantelakis craftsmen family, demonstrate the technique of sgraffito (Xista) on the wall of a house. Whitewash is spread on the moist plaster and brushed evenly over the surface. Before whitewash and plaster dry, the plaster surface, with forks and nails, is scratched through the whitewash in marked places. The result is a black and white ornament on the wall.

    Abstract: Vor dem Männerhaus in Malingdam/Imarin halten sich spielende Jungen und Männer auf. Salap verziert einen Ohrpflock, indem er mit dem Schneidezahn eines Nagetieres Verzierungen in den Bambus kratzt. Die Verzierungen bestreicht er mit Hautfett, um die Musterung hervortreten zu lassen. Er steckt den Ohrpflock in sein linkes Ohrläppchen. Während er arbeitet, spielt ein anderer Mann auf einer Maultrommel.
    Abstract: Several boys and men are playing in front of the men's house in Malingdam/Imarin. Salap is decorating an ear peg by scratching decorations in the bamboo with a rodent incisor. He smears dermal fat into the decorations so that the pattern will stand out. He sticks the ear peg into his left ear lobe. While he is working, another man is playing a Jew's harp.

Es malen führende Männer und Künstler allein, zu zweit oder zusammen mit jüngeren.
    Abstract: The film shows three different ways in which the Kwoma employ painting techniques: painting on flat surfaces, i.e. the flattened bases of sago-palm leaf-stems, chip-carved wooden shields and three-dimensional carvings. The painters are respected men and artists, who will be seen working alone, in pairs and with younger men.

    Abstract: Während einer Initiation trägt ein Mann aus Japanaut Modelliermasse auf einen Schädel auf. Von einem Baum im Wald holt er Baumsaft. Die Modelliermasse mischt er aus Erde, Baumsaft und gebranntem Kalk. Dann befestigt er am Schädel Kauri-Schneckengehäuse, Conus-Schneckenböden und Menschenhaare. Anschließend wird der Schädel mit schwarzer, gelber und roter Farbe bemalt.
    Abstract: During an initiation ceremony a man modells on a skull a mixture of clay. He taps a tree for some tree-sap. The mixture on the skull consists of earth, tree-sap, and burned chalk. Different shells like cowrie shells and conus shells and human hair fixed on the skull. Finally he paints the overmodelled skull with black, yellow and red.

Vornehmlich männliche Teilnehmer, als alte, häßliche, zerlumpte Weiber verkleidet, ziehen, von Herolden, Prinzenpaar, Pritschenmeistern und Blasmusikkapelle begleitet, am Nachmittag des Faschingsmontages durch den Ort. Anschließend an den Umzug lassen die "Fetzen" ihrer Ausgelassenheit in den Straßen, den Wirtshäusern und beim Ball im Rathaus freien Lauf.
    Abstract: On carnival's monday afternoon a lot of ugly masked "Hutzen" and "Fetzen" have a meeting in the pub "Langbathtal" to march together through the village. They splash and beset the spectators. Subsequent they roam the pubs. In the evening there is a "Fetzenball" in the town hall.

    Abstract: Den Höhepunkt des brauchtümlichen Faschingsgeschehens im Salinenort Ebensee bildet der "Fetzenzug". Vornehmlich männliche Teilnehmer, als alte, häßliche, zerlumpte Weiber verkleidet, ziehen, von Herolden, Prinzenpaar, Pritschenmeistern und Blasmusikkapelle begleitet, am Nachmittag des Faschingsmontages durch den Ort. Anschließend an den Umzug lassen die "Fetzen" ihrer Ausgelassenheit in den Straßen, den Wirtshäusern und beim Ball im Rathaus freien Lauf.
    Abstract: On carnival's monday afternoon a lot of ugly masked "Hutzen" and "Fetzen" have a meeting in the pub "Langbathtal" to march together through the village. They splash and beset the spectators. Subsequent they roam the pubs. In the evening there is a "Fetzenball" in the town hall.

    Abstract: Der Uhrenschildmaler Karl Straub (geb. 1892) stellt ein Uhrenschild mit dem traditionellen Rosenmuster im Bogenfeld her: Eine Sperrholzplatte wird weiß grundiert, mit Hilfe einer Pappschablone mit schwarzem Zifferblatt versehen und aus freier Hand mit farbigen Blumenmotiven bemalt.
    Abstract: Karl Straub (born 1892) is one of the last painters of clockfaces in the Black Forest. The film shows him during his work, in this way it is possible to duplicate the completion of a clockface. In the beginning the panel gets its priming, then the dail is formed and following the empty spaces are decorated. Typical for clocks from the region around Furtwangen is the rose in the arc, for which decoration Karl Straub devotes most of his attention. Apart from the painting the film also imparts how the paint is used and which tools the painter needs.

    Abstract: In der Kleinstadt Hala (Provinz Sind) werden bemalte, glasierte Keramikfliesen nach traditionellen Techniken erzeugt. Der Film dokumentiert den kompletten Produktionsprozeß in den Werkstätten eines Fliesenerzeugers ("kashigar"). Die bunte Baukeramik mit ihren floral-vegetativen Dekormotiven läßt sich an den Fliesenfassaden der Moscheen und Mausoleen des Sind bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen.
    Abstract: In the small town Hala in the Province of Sind traditional techniques in the manufacturing of painted glazed tiles have been preserved. The documentary film contains all working processes in a tile maker's ("kashigar") workshop. In Sind, the coloured tile decoration with its floral patterns - displayed on the walls of mosques and tombs - can be dated back to the 16th century.

    Abstract: Die Töpferin Kambanpi holt am Berg von Aibom Tonerde. Unter ihrem Haus sitzend, mischt und knetet sie zwei Tonsorten mit Wasser durch. Sie formt zwei Schüsseln aus dem Vollen, in Parallelwulst- und Treibtechnik. Sie stellt den Rand einer vorgetrockneten Feuerschale her und setzt Verzierungen auf. Eine Schüssel versieht sie mit Henkel und Verzierungen. In einem offenen Feuer brennt sie die Gefäße. Die noch heißen Töpfe bestreicht sie mit Sagobrühe.
    Abstract: The female potter Kambanpi climbs the hill of Aibom and digs some clay. Back to the village she mixes two different kinds of clay together with water. She makes two vessels. An already dried hearth is decorated and to another vessel decoration is added. The pots are placed on a frame of palm leaves and covered with more dried leaves. After the fire the rather hot pots are sealed with starchy sago water.

    Abstract: Zu Beginn der Trockenzeit erscheint die Kwifon-Gesellschaft von Oku im heiligen Gehöft von Lomoto, um den königlichen Ahnen Mkong Moteh durch Tänze zu ehren. Nach dem Abschlagen des Grases auf dem Vorplatz verteilt der König Kolanüsse und Palmwein und hält eine Ansprache. Auf dem Grab beginnen die Tänze mit dem Rasseltornister Kebak. Unter Führung der Mabuh-Maske tritt Kwifon dann den Rückmarsch zum Palast an.
    Abstract: The Kwifon Society of Oku has gathered at the sacred compound of Lomoto to perform the dances customary at the onset of the dry season in honour of Mkong Moteh the most eminent of the royal ancestors. After the forecourt is cleared of grass with a bushknife and the king has arranged for cola nuts and palm wine to be passed around, the dancing atop the king's grave begins, starting with Kebak, the most important Kwifon instrument. Led by the Mabuh mask Kwifon returns to the apace.

    Abstract: In Parallelwulsttechnik stellt eine Töpferin ein etwa 50 cm hohes, eiförmiges Wassergefäß her. Nach dem Anfertigen der Grundform wird der obere Teil des Gefäßes mit Ziermustern versehen. Danach brennt die Frau das Gefäß in einem aufgeschichteten Holzfeuer. Durch Abreiben des Tons mit schwelenden Blättern wird dem Produkt ein schwarzer Glanz verliehen.
    Abstract: A female potter makes an egg-shaped water vessel about 50 centimetres high by the coiling method. After shaping, the upper part of the vessel is decorated. The pot is baked in a wood fire. Finally the pottery is rubbed with smouldering leaves to give it a black glaze.

    Abstract: Vorbereitung der Waldgeister: Körperbemalung und Ankleiden. Pantomimischer Auftritt der Waldgeister vor der Dorfbevölkerung außerhalb des abgezäunten Männerhausbezirkes. Anschließend Auftritt der Ahnfrauen, zweier mythischer Schwestern, der besondere Bedeutung für die Frauen hat.
    Abstract: The men representing the spirits of the forest are painted and decorated. The spirits of the forest dance and show themselves above the fence surrounding the men's house. Two heavily decorated dancers appear in front of the fence and represent two female ancestors. They dance together with another men and women of the village.

    Abstract: One week before Ash Wednesday, Shrovetide is proclaimed out of a waggon in various places of the town of Wolfach. After the "Eleven o'clock Mass" on the following "Dirty Thursday" pretzels are distributed to the children. The procession of the coffee-party tabbies takes place in the afternoon of the same day. Shrovetide proper is opened on Shrove Monday by the so-called "Well-awake", a historical custom meant to wake up the fools. The big Shrove Monday procession in the afternoon is followed by the Shrovetide play about the abduction and the liberation of the gipsy princess. On Shrove Thuesday, the children have a procession of their own during which the Pretzel Fool is carried along. Towards the evening, the Procession of the Noses is passing through the streets; women disguised as males that have been practicipating are plunged into the fountain. Shrovetide ends on Ash Wednesday when the fool break into lamentations at the Wailing Wall and are then going to wash their money-bags in the fountain.

    Abstract: Aus einem ca. ein Meter langen, entrindeten Stück eines Baumstammes schnitzt ein Mann einen Totenpfahl. In die dickere, obere Hälfte werden rings um den Stamm laufende, schräge Zickzackmuster eingekerbt. Vor dem Aufstellen des Totenpfahls wird der obere Teil mit der Hand mit roter Farbe bestrichen.
    Abstract: A man carves a grace-post out of an unbarked trunk about a metre long. Oblique zigzag patterns running round the trunk are engraved on the bigger upper part of the post. Before setting up the grave-post, the upper part is covered with red paint applied with the hand.

    Abstract: Zwei junge Männer stellen aus Ton mehrere Pfeifenköpfe her. Der Ton wird mit der Hand geformt, ausgehöhlt und mit Punktmustern verziert. Den Pfeifenköpfen wird ein hohles Holzstück als Mundstück angepaßt. In einem Feuer werden die Köpfe gebrannt.
    Abstract: Two young men make several pipe-bowls from clay. The clay is shaped with the hand, hollowed out and the bowl so formed decorated by engraved dots. A hollow piece of wood is fitted to the bowls as a mouthpiece. The bowls are baked in a fire.

    Abstract: How closely linked the various domains of a planting culture are in daily life is demonstrated by means of examples from the activities of a leading Kwoma, Yessomari, who comes from the village of Meno-Saserman in the Washkuk Hills (Ambunti District, East Sepik Province). The film largely follows the planting cycle, from clearing the land (work done co-opertively by the planter, other men from his close cricle of friends and relations, and women) and burning the stubble through the digging of planting holes (done co-operatively by a large group of men), planting the yams, tying up and tending the creepers (the planter's three specific activities) to harvesting the crop. In between, glimpses are given of other sectors of male responsibility, like carving a decorated beam for a men's house, preparing a pandanus soup, extracting sago starch, making and decorating a piece of ceremonial pottery and painting a chip-carved shield. The film closes with a look at a harvest festival, which women with shields made of decorated net bags also take part in, dancing in front of the men's house.

    Abstract: Auf dem Dorfplatz von Malingdam/Imarin, wo sich die Männer aufhalten, stellt ein Mann aus Kalzitplatten durch Ritzen mit Steinsplittern eine Nasenstabrohform her. Als die Rohform zerbricht, arbeitet er an einer neuen, die er anschließend am Bach naß schleift und poliert. Um ihn herum finden andere Aktivitäten statt: Flechten, Faserherstellung, Gesichtsbemalung, Körperreinigung, Haarscheren, Maultrommelspiel, Gesang usw.
    Abstract: A man is sitting on the village ground, the meeting place of men. Using chips of broken stones he carves a nose sticks out of a piece of calcite stone. The calcite breaks and he carves another one. Afterwards he grinds and polishes it at the streamlet. Around him the other men are busy with plaiting, making fibres, face painting, body cleaning, hairshearing, playing a jew's harp, singing, etc.

    Abstract: Tobias Trost († 1975) hat als erster Schnitzer in Matrei große Masken mit sehr ausdrucksvollen Schreckgesichtern hergestellt, bei denen der Träger durch die Nasenlöcher hinausschaut. So können die funktionell unabhängigen Maskenaugen überaus wirkungsvoll gestaltet werden. Durch seine Art, Masken zu gestalten, wurde Tobias Trost zum Vorbild vieler Schnitzer im gesamten Gebiet.     Abstract: Tobias Trost († 1975) was the first carver of Matrei who carved masks with expressive frightening faces using the nostrils for the mask wearer to peep through. Thus the mask's eyes are free of their function and can be designed very effictively. Many carvers in the region followed Trost's example. (Film from the Otto Koenig footage archive).

    Abstract: Wegen unwegsamen Geländes kann die Halmfrucht vom Brandacker nicht heimgeführt, sondern muß eingetragen werden. Diese als "Korntragen" bezeichnete Tätigkeit hat einen speziellen Ernteschlußbrauch hervorgebracht mit den Brauchelementen Mahl, Tanz und Maske. Den Höhepunkt des festlichen Abends bildet der Auftritt eines Maskentieres ("Habergeiß").
    Abstract: Because of the rugged mountain country the harvested grain cannot be pulled home by carts, but must be carried by man power. This activity is called "Korntragen" ("carrying the grain"). Furthermore, it is accompanied by a peculiar harvest ritual with such specific ceremonial features as common meal, dances and the appearance of masked mythological beings. The culmination of this nocturnal feast is marked by the appearance of the "Habergeiß" (two persons carrying a goats' mask and other elements of this mythological animal).

    Abstract: Neben dem Treiben der bekannten Maskengruppen ("Flinserln", "Pleß" und "Trommelweiber") sind weitere Aktivitäten für die Faschingszeit in Bad Aussee typisch: verschiedene Bälle, organisierte Umzüge und das oftmals improvisierte Auftreten von Maskierten, "Maschkerer" genannt.     Abstract: Beside the wellknown mask-groups of "Flinserln", "Pleß" and "Trommelweiber" there are further activities which are typically for shrovetide in Bad Aussee: several balls, organized processions and the often improvised appearing of masked and costumed people called "Maschkerer".

    Abstract: The film shows a custom during carneval season which occurs quadrannually under participation of the male population of the village. It depicts the events the day before and the main day of performance that is thursday before carneval sunday. The performance takes place on the market square, on the streets, and in the courtbuilding.

    Abstract: Kurze Straßenszenen im Zentrum des Marktes Bad Aussee am Nachmittag des Faschingsdienstages mit den Maskengestalten "Pleß". Scientific film document shot on Shrove tuesday 1977.
    Abstract: In the center of Bad Aussee appear in the afternoon of Shrove tuesday among other masked persons the "Pleß". These are youths dressed in old, worn clothes, carrying sticks with rags tied on to them. They dip these rags in puddles and run after other young people with them, who in their turn throw snowballs and pieces of ice, shouting "Pleß, Pleß". Therefore the "Pleß" have protected their heads with "helmets", consisting of beehive, boothheads or washing powder boxes.

    Abstract: An den Vorabenden des Nikolaustages geht eine Gruppe bestehend aus dem hl. Nikolaus, einer zweiten Nikolausfigur, einer Figur mit Tierkopfmaske (dem Klausenbigger) und einer Figur in Fellgewand (dem Rubelz) von Haus zu Haus. Der hl. Nikolaus sagt einen Spruch auf, der Nikolausbegleiter beschenkt die Kinder und der Rubelz droht ihnen. Der Klausenbigger hat keine aktive Funktion.
    Abstract: On the eve of St. Nicholas day (December 6th) a group of mummed young men goes from house to house. The group consists of St. Nicholas, a second Nicholas figure, a figure with an animal mask (the Klausenbigger, which lent the custom its name), and a figure with fur clothing, the so-called Rubelz. In the individual houses parents and children await together the group's visit. Saint Nicholas utters a rhymed saying and then checks to see if the children have learned their prayers and songs. St. Nicholas' companion gives the children sweets, apples, and nuts and leave a switch behind. The Rubelz threatens to tie disobedient children onto his chain. During the visit the Klausenbigger has no active function. In the end, the four masked figures visit a restaurant.
