Abstract: This volume originates from a research project, which was funded within the PRIN program Writing Uses: Transmission of Knowledge, Administrative Practices and Political Control in Anatolian and Syro-Anatolian Polities in the 2nd and 1st Millennium BCE. The project involved ‘research units’ from different Italian universities (Torino, Pavia, Bologna, Firenze, Napoli - Suor Orsola Benincasa). The papers presented here, seek to fill some gaps in our knowledge of the Hittite Empire and its epigones, and offer an updated picture of some aspects of the Hittite and post-Hittite administration in Anatolia and Syria through the analysis and interpretation of epigraphic and archaeological evidence

Abstract: The volume contains a selection of some of the most representative works from Rosanna Benacchio's extensive scientific production. It is divided into three parts, the first one being dedicated to the category of verbal aspect in the Slavic languages. The second part deals with Slavic minority varieties spoken in Italy, in particular the Slovene dialects of Friuli and Molise Slavic. The third part focuses on three linguistic phenomena that are analysed from a diachronic perspective: the referential usage of the personal pronoun Vy in the Petrine era; the use of clitic pronouns in the Slavic languages; the formation of the definite article in the Slovene area based on the evidence of the Resian Catechism of the 18th century

Abstract: A little more than 700 years after the death of the great Italian poet, this book intends to contribute to the assessment of what place the literary, cultural and linguistic heritage of the great Italian poet has had in linguistic development, in the formation of national consciousness of the Slavic peoples, in their literatures and in the elaboration of their literary canon, especially in the post-1991 period. Indeed, in the last thirty years, many political, social, cultural and linguistic changes have taken place in the varied panorama of the Slavic countries. New states have arisen, with their respective national languages and with the need to revise or elaborate their respective literary canons. The volume contains essays on Dante's reception in Belarus, Bulgaria, Czechia, Croatia, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine

Abstract: This volume offers the first Italian translation of Ljósvetninga saga, composed in the thirteenth century, belonging to the genre of íslendigasögur, the "sagas of the Icelanders". The volume contextualizes the work in the Medieval Icelandic literature's framework and offers an overlook at philological issues, such as, for example, the relationship between the existing manuscripts and the genesis of the saga. In addition, the volume also provides a literary analysis of the style, characters and text, based on some of the recent academic studies. The Ljósvetninga saga tells the story of the continuous struggles between two families in Northern Iceland for supremacy over the territory: through the extensive references to legal practices, it remains a precious example of medieval Icelandic culture

Abstract: Psychoanalysis spread earlier and faster in Russia than in Western Europe. According to the author, there are three main reasons for this. First, psychoanalysis is based on the fictional structure of patients's narratives. In a literary-centric country such as Russia, the 'literary character' of psychoanalysis quickly attracts the Russian intelligentsia. Secondly, the formal similarities between literary and psychoanalytic language, and the close connection between the poetic word and the rhetoric of the unconscious, contribute to rendering Freudian language particularly familiar in Russia. Thirdly, the Silver Age, with its attention to the symbol, the 'other', and the double, contributes to increasing interest in the theory of the unconscious. This will continue until after the October Revolution as the state relies on psychoanalysis to help forge the new Soviet citizen. This 'alliance', however, is short-lived, and Freudian psychoanalytic theory will be ostracized from the 1930s up to the end of the Soviet regime

Abstract: From the 1920s onwards, the Soviet Union became a favourite destination for Italian writers, travellers who took it upon themselves to interpret and present the new Soviet world to Italian readers by sending articles to newspapers and magazines, most of which were later published as monographs. The present study aims to investigate the reasons that drove so many intellectuals to visit Russia and the Soviet territories after the October. Through references to historical and political ideologies that may have influenced the writers' interpretations, the reconstruction of travel conditions and individual approaches to Soviet life, the study focuses on Italian intellectuals' views on the USSR and the particular value that the reportages had in the construction of the image of the Soviet world in the Italian reality

Abstract: This volume presents the critical edition of Cammino di Dante, the first topo-chronographic summary of Dante's Comedy, written by the Florentine notary, ser Piero Bonaccorsi (1410-1477), for the friar of Santa Croce, Romolo de' Medici. The edition of the text is opened by a bio-bibliographical introduction on the author, that hightlights some new aspects of his notarial career, his literary activity and his relationship with notable figures of his age. The text then presents the seven manuscripts that handed down the Cammino, including four original manuscripts by Bonaccorsi, and analyses their textual relations. The edition offers a critical text based on the codex Riccardiano 1122, the last complete autograph edition, whose unreleased appendix is also published

Abstract: Maximus the Greek (c.1470-1556), born Michael Trivolis, is a complex figure. As a copyist and Dominican novice, Orthodox monk and humanist, he stands at the crossroads of different worlds, cultures and creeds. His life path unwound between his besieged homeland, humanist Italy - in the Republics of Florence and Venice and in the Papal States - Mount Athos and the Moscow of Vasili III and Ivan IV. This path brought him exceptionally into contact with both Latin and vernacular humanism and Latin Christianity, with the Greek and Slavic Byzantine tradition, with Orthodoxy and Islam, in a cultural, linguistic and religious polyphony that is at once his hallmark and the key to his literary legacy. The subject of this book is Maximus the Greek's testimony regarding the Western religious orders contained in the Terrible and Memorable Narration, and the Perfect Form of Monastic Life and the Letter on the Franciscans and the Dominicans. The comparison with documentary evidence, made here for the first time, demonstrates the reliability of these works, casting light on the author's life and the sources, places and people involved in it

Abstract: The volume contains the works selected by the Scientific Committee of the Italian Association for Terminology (Ass.I.Term), presented at the 2019 Annual Conference, hosted at the Accademia della Crusca. Italian lexicography has long been influenced by the masterpieces of literature, especially the oldest, and it is therefore in this perspective that the volume, which shows the vitality of studies in terminology, is inscribed, proposing a reflection that touches on the comparison between terminology and lexicography, through which technology and science can show their positive function for the development and growth of the Italian language

Abstract: Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2020 collects the Proceedings of the Seminar that took place in Certaldo Alta on 10-11 September 2020, in one of the short intervals that the pandemic has left open to face-to-face meetings. The Seminar, now in its seventh edition, is configured not only as one of the main activities of the Ente Giovanni Boccaccio, but as an international event, whose importance is confirmed by the continuous increase in citations in the scientific bibliography. The 2020 edition also qualifies for the relief and variety of the topics covered, for the merging and intertwining of historical-literary, philological, linguistic skills, which lead to reflect on important topics of Boccaccio's culture and sources and on his works, not without forgetting, in this centenary year 2021, the vital and fundamental relationship with Dante

Abstract: The volume presents a selection of poems originally composed in German by Austrian-Italian author Benno Geiger and translated into Italian for the first time. This publication aims to make Geiger's poetical work available to a broader audience and place it aside his better known writing on Art History. Geiger's specific role as a mediator and bridge between two cultures makes his poetical work extremely significant, as well as considering his prolific activity as a literary translator to which he devoted himself throughout his life. The current edition provides bilingual parallel text, preceded by an introductory essay and a biographical profile of the author. The critical apparatus highlights both the intertextual references and the writer's complex links with the Italian and German poetical traditions

Abstract: The essays gathered in this volume are devoted to different aspects of the reception of Humanism and the Renaissance in Slavic countries. They mark the beginning of a dialogue among scholars of different Slavic languages and literatures, in search of the ways in which the entire Slavic world - albeit to varying degrees - has participated from the very beginning in European cultural transformations, and not simply by sharing some characteristics of the new currents, but by building a new identity in harmony with the changes of the time. By overcoming the dominant paradigm, which sees all cultural manifestations as part of a separate 'national' linguistic, literary and artistic canon, this volume is intended to be the first step in outlining some ideas and suggestions in view of the creation, in the future, of an atlas that maps the relevance of Humanism and the Renaissance in the Slavic world

Abstract: This volume collects contributions written by eight authors interested in different research areas in East Asian Studies. Divided into a Japanese and a Chinese section, it explores topics ranging from East Asian literatures to contact linguistics and sociology. The Japanese section contains four essays about contemporary Japanese cinema and different aspects of Japanese modern and contemporary literature (i.e. the literary motif of kame naku, 'crying turtle', yuri manga, and tenkō bungaku, the 'literature of conversion'). The Chinese section concerns two main macro-topics: on the one hand, it focuses on issues related to cultural contacts between Italy and China; on the other hand, it deals with Chinese migration to Italy, highlighting socio-historical aspects and cultural production

Abstract: The graphic novel is one of the most suggestive and successful semiotic phenomena. This collection of essays focuses on the interrelations of image and text, and how they are substantiated and thematized by graphic novels. The volume gathers together twelve essays and follows a twofold structure: a historical and theoretical one, providing different and complementary approaches to the topic, from neurocognitive narratology to Digital Humanities; in the second part of the volume several case studies are discussed, based on key examples as shown by the following authors and their work: from Vanna Vinci and Lorenza Natarella, to Gipi, Zerocalcare and Manuel Fior; from Dino Buzzati to Hugo Pratt and Pazienza; from Pablo Echaurren to the Homeric epics' comics remediation

Abstract: The main purpose of this work is to re-examine the literature published in the USSR during the Brežnevian era (1964-'84). Although it was considered insignificant and uninteresting, quickly forgotten after its conclusion, Brežnevian era was a period of silent change of society. These changes reflected on a substantial part of the official literature that while remaining within the ideological and politically acceptable, did not exempt from confronting the most uncomfortable issues of the time. In this 'free' zone, authors of the calibre of Čingiz Ajtmatov, Viktor Astaf'ev, Valentin Rasputin, Vasilij Šukšin and Jurij Trifonov succeed in introducing themselves. Their different artistic personalities and ideological positions about the socialist realism show the slow process of pluralization of the Soviet culture

Abstract: Using the metaphor of the city-text, the volume investigates in a comparative perspective the representations of Istanbul in the works of two pairs of authors: Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar/Orhan Pamuk and Yaşar Kemal/Latife Tekin. The notions of memory and language provide the main hermeneutical cyphers in the analysis of each urban poetics, considered respectively as attempts of (re)writing and translation of mnesic and cultural text of the city in the literary space of high national culture. Moving from the centre to periphery, such an itinerary aims to highlight the intimate relationship between forms of aesthetical appropriation of urban space-time and (de)construction processes of Turkish national canon

Abstract: In the garden of the world. Italy to a young 19th century Chinese traveler. On September 14th, 1859, at the first light of dawn, a young Chinese traveler named Guo Liancheng 郭連城 (1839-1866) landed in Civitavecchia, Italy, after a long journey of overland travel and months of navigation. Coming from a small village far from the capital, he was only 20 years old and was in the company of an Italian priest, Luigi Celestino Spelta. Guo was not the first Chinese man to visit Europe but before leaving, he decided to keep a daily journal of his experience, published soon after his return with the title of Xiyou bilüe西游筆略 (Brief Account of the Journey to the West). This book presents for the first time the story of Guo Liancheng, exploring a still little-known aspect of the history of the contacts between Italy and China. Following the pages of Guo Liancheng's journal, the author tries to shed light on its contents and features and to analyze the image of Italy described in the pages of Brief account of the Journey to the West, the earliest firsthand account on the Bel Paese ever published in China

Abstract: The present dissertation is concerned with the KIN oracle, a symbolic divination technique produced by the Hittite in the 2nd mill. B.C. and developed only in the Hittite cultural milieu. Like other omens of the Ancient Near East, the Hittite oracles were considered to be messages from the gods. The Hittite solicited omens included Extispicy, Augury, the Bed Oracle, the ḪURRI-Bird Oracle, the Snake Oracle, and the KIN Oracle. Although many studies have already explained how the different divination systems worked, the KIN oracle frame still remains difficult to understand in all of its features. In this research the KIN cuneiform sources and its oracular structure have been analyzed in all respects and enriched with tables, patterns, and pictures in order to better understand the work carried out. As far as the KIN is concerned, this research provides several different analytic implications both for Hittite and divination studies

Abstract: The volume Intorno a Boccaccio / Boccaccio e dintorni 2019 was born from the international study seminar that took place in Certaldo Alta, in the House of Giovanni Boccaccio, on 12 and 13 September 2019. The Seminar, now in its sixth edition, is proposed as one of the most solid and significant appointments in the activity of the Giovanni Boccaccio National Organization, and as one of the events that best characterizes its mission. Created to give a voice particularly to young scholars, over the years it has become an important appointment for presenting and discussing research in progress or just concluded, and always open to future developments. With this volume, which includes essays particularly focused on philological, literary, historical-linguistic and lexicographic aspects, a series led by an authoritative Scientific Committee is inaugurated

Abstract: As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities

Abstract: This study's aim is to deepen and enhance the linguistic dimension in Pier Paolo Pasolini's work, in the hope of restoring to his figure all the fullness of his intense and visceral relationship with the entire universe of languages. In the first part of the work we will investigate the various moments of Pasolini's reflection on different expressive codes, from dialect to the language of cinema, from the 'Language of Reality' to the technological neo-Italian, promptly counterposed by the author's linguistic experimentation. From here a broad lexical investigation starts - this study being the subject of the second part of this volume - with the aim of highlighting the author's contribution to contemporary Italian (as to this day many 'keywords' from Pasolini's universe still echo in Italian language, from «nuovo Potere» to «Palazzo», from «omologazione» to «mutazione antropologica»), thus confirming, once again, the inseparable relationship between reflection and language creativity, giving birth to a new, unique portrait of Pasolini as a 'linguist' and at the same time as an 'onomaturgist'

Abstract: Frammenti di massificazione: le neoavanguardie anglo-germanofone, il cut-up di Burroughs e la pop art negli anni Sessanta e Settanta analyses the influence of William Seward Burroughs' cut-up method on British and German-language neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s from a comparative point of view, with particular attention to the literary context of the Federal Republic of Germany. In four chapters devoted to a profile of this American intellectual and artist, the origins, stylistic features and reception of the cut-up method, the author investigates the reasons for the success of this process, rediscovered by Burroughs and aiming at a reconstruction of text fragments to build up new textual entities. The last chapter is an overview of the most interesting of the uses of the cut-up method in artistic environments other than literary writing, documenting the transformation of a rebellious technique into a new form of expression, i.e. pop art

Abstract: Grammar will be explained in this book from a new point of view: that of the speaker. He or she is the architect that makes up the sentence using tools provided by the language and with which he or she performs specific 'operations'. By using these, the speaker manages the information that he or she believes to be sharing with the listener, transmits his or her attitude towards what is being said or depicts in different ways the world that he or she wants to communicate. Henri Adamzcewski and his school have explored these tools in recent decades: here there is a brief synthesis of their work applied to Spanish

Abstract: Connettivi tedeschi e poeticità: l'attivazione dell'interprete tra forma e funzione. Studio teorico e analisi di un caso esemplare. Starting from Jakobson's definition of poeticalness, the volume studies the mechanisms by which connectors, such as linguistic signs assigned to the connection between parts of speech, contribute to the poeticalness in a text, which is here intended as a textual peculiarity capable of activating the interpreter in the tout court language, but mainly in the literary text. The first two chapters of this volume offer an overview of the theoretical and methodological foundations that justify the choice to acquire the connectors as possible indicators of poeticalness, and also a preparatory introduction to the third chapter, where there is the description of the results from a study on the syntax and semantics of the connector in in a collection of German poetry texts from the first half of the 20th century

Abstract: This volume contains the critical edition of the Latin elegies written by the most important poet of the Polish Renaissance, as well as a philological commentary . The comment, in particular, does not only refer to the collection of similia, but also analyses Jan Kochanowski's ways of "imitatio" (imitation), underlining his extraordinary poetic skills as well as his vibrant and lively relationship with classical texts, which he reuses cleverly to satisfy his own needs for meaning

Abstract: "Still Blundering into Sense". Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy. This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields

Abstract: Gerasim Zelic (1752-1828) is one of the most emblematic figures of the Serbian cultural scene between the 18th and 19th century. He as an archimandrite of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Krupa, a diplomat and a writer. From 1794 to 1811, Zelic held the position of Vicar-General of the Serbs in Dalmatia and, as such, was one of the main actors of the events related to the confessional controversy that stirred the region at the time. His autobiography, entitled Žitije and published in Budapest in 1823, also places him among the protagonists of a crucial period for the birth of the new Serbian literature. Following a multidisciplinary approach, the essays collected in the volume Gerasim Zelic e il suo tempo analyse Gerasim Zelic's story, his involvement in the events related to the confessional controversy in Dalmatia and his literary activity, bringing the discussion to the era in which the Serbian archimandrite lived. Particular attention is paid to the context in which Zelic worked, namely the Balkan peninsula, as well as to the cultural history of the Serbs of Hungary between the 18th and 19th century

Abstract: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix

Abstract: The twenty-three essays of this volume represent the contributions of the Italian delegation to the 16th International Congress of Slavic Studies, which took place in Belgrade in August 2018. The essays, written in Italian, English, Russian and Serbian, are divided into three sections: linguistics, philology and Slavic literatures. Just as the range of the touched topics is very wide, so is their time span, going from the prehistoric and protohistoric eras to the present day. The covered topics extend from the Proto-Slavic language to the writing, linguistic and literary traditions of the Slavic ecclesiastical civilization, from the linguistic and cultural relations between Italy and Russia to a particular 18th-century Illyrian dictionary. In the field of synchronic linguistics, the essays include: a study of dialectology and sociolinguistics in the borderland between Ukraine and Belarus; the ways to express the concept of completeness in Russian; the study of some concessive constructs of the Russian language using the methods of "constructionist grammar", a particular aspect of the Russian and Bulgarian verbal systems; and finally, the different suffixes used in the formation of the aspectual pairs in the Resian dialect. In the literary field, the essays topics range from Gumilev and Chlebnikov to literature and ecology; from Armenian writers who write in Russian to the neo-Latin poem "The bison's song" and to the humanistic and Renaissance reflections in modern Ukrainian literature; from an Italian scholar of Serbian literature in the first half of the 20th century to the image of the "strong woman" in the Serbian literature of the same time. Therefore, thanks to their variety, these essays offer a very concrete idea of the several existing currents within the research in Slavic Studies in Italy

Abstract: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition "de", which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy

Abstract: This book was born from an observation and a desire. The starting point is that the multilingual nature of Andrea Zanzotto's poetry becomes almost invisible by virtue of being evident in the eyes of its readers. The babelic hypersensitivity of the petèl's poet is certainly not absent in critical studies, yet this work addresses it in a systematic way for the first time, by investigating on the multiple connections between poetic writing and languages. The desire that accompanied this reflection was to lead it with a "prismatic" gaze, crossing the poetry's multilingualism and the poet's translation practice, and summoning the many voices of its translators around the Zanzottian multivocality. A series of unpublished documents in the appendix, and the interventions of poets like Cecchinel, Demarcq and Rueff, alongside those of the best European experts of Zanzotto, add a special significance to this work. Speech given on June 26, 2007 at the Locanda da Lino in Solighetto (TV, Italy) on the occasion of the presentation of the book by F. Carbognin, L'«altro spazio». Scienza, paesaggio, corpo nella poesia di Andrea Zanzotto (Nuova Editrice Magenta, 2007) and of issue no. 230 of «l'immaginazione» (year XXII, May 2007). Videotaped and included in the DVD Tribute to Andrea Zanzotto (Viviafilm production), which also includes speeches by Niva Lorenzini, Marco Antonio Bazzocchi and Silvana Tamiozzo Goldmann

Abstract: Dante's verse "If I spake false, thou falsifiedst the coin" (Inferno, Canto XXX, verse 115) is a typical example of what would later be defined as "para-hypotaxis". On the basis of a reconsideration of the categories of 'coordination' and 'subordination', the author proposes an analysis of this syntactic module in ancient Italian, addressing aspects such as its debated origin and the possibility of establishing typological comparisons with structures which are documented in other languages (outside the Romance and Indo-European spheres as well). The research focuses in particular on the identification of the discursive and textual functions of the para-hypotaxis, which were investigated in five texts from the time span between the end of the 13th century and the middle of the 16th century

Abstract: Mare, fiume, ruscello. Acqua e musica nella cultura romantica (Sea, river, stream. Water and music in romantic culture) re-reads German literature between the 18th and 19th centuries, focusing on the figure of water, following the theoretical-methodological lines traced by Gaston Bachelard in his studies on material imagination, especially in his 1942 work L'eau et les rêves. The work investigates the elective affinities between liquid substance, poetic word and music in the romantic period. The rereading highlights the large number of "liquid-aquatic" metaphors in Franz Schubert's lieder works, with particular attention to the cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (1823) and Winterreise (1828). The study is conducted in an interdisciplinary perspective that extends, between literary and musical analysis, to the reading and listening of the Lieder

Abstract: Una muchedumbre o nada. Coordenadas temáticas en la obra poética de Josefina Plá investigates the aspects still little studied and offers new interpretations of the poet's work (Canary Islands 1903 - Asunción 1999). The intertextual analysis, which has explored not only the verses but also the stories, essays and plays, has revealed a network of relationships, metaphors and thematic axes (such as erotic passion, the yearning for motherhood or the meditations on the multiplicity of the individual and the relationship with time and death) that develops both internally, between the various fields of the author's production, and externally, establishing explicit links or revealing implicit affinities with authors such as Rokha, Unamuno, Pirandello, Seneca, Heidegger or García Lorca

Abstract: This book is the first volume of a collection of articles devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the conference which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence, organized by the Research Unit Lessico dei Beni Culturali. The texts presented are the result of a joint reflection by specialists from different fields: linguistics, art history, architecture, photography, literature and geography to name a few. The two volumes analyze the tourist guide and the other works that accompany the trip as places of creation and transformation of the experience of real or virtual travel, participating as such in the creation of the tourist imaginary of places and cultural objects they describe

Abstract: The two volumes are dedicated to Alessandra Contini Bonacossi by the Association "Archivio per la memoria e la scrittura delle donne", which bears her name since 2007. They include a biographical profile, enriched by the list of her numerous publications, followed by thirty-two essays written by scholars who shared with her ideals and cultural interests of research and study and writings of her family members who make up the "family album". The collection, in addition to the variety of issues addressed in a wide chronological span - with essays ranging from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age - mainly focuses on the historiographical and interpretative reflection on documentary, iconographic, literary sources and themes such as Medici diplomacy, the Lorraine age, and gender history, to which Alessandra made important contributions with her studies

Abstract: The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the "imitatio" and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo's canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its 'marginality' as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca

Abstract: Vasyl' Stus's (1938-1985) poetry is one of the richest and most complex chapters in the literary history of late Soviet Ukraine. His poems are not only born of the author's talent, but also of his erudition and deep cultural awareness; Stus's poetry eloquently shows the presence of a significant Modernist trend in the literature of the Ukrainian underground during the Age of Economic stagnation. Stus's Modernism is the ideal evolution of the Ukrainian poetic culture of the first decades of the century, and develops thanks to an intense intertextual dialogue with the European literature. Stus's reception of Russian and German poetry, in addition to becoming the model for nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century Ukrainian poetry, proves fundamental to fully understand his work's literary palimpsest, which this volume offers a comprehensive reading of, from the early stages to the maturity's collections

Abstract: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other - stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity - to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed - in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality - in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? The volume, conceived and edited by Nicola Turi, while tracing the individual path of known and lesser-known authors, in relation to the main theme of the book, both Italian and not (from Leopardi to Zanzotto, from Gadda to Calvino, from Salsa to Dessí, from Luzi and Fenoglio to Leavitt, Eisner and Celestini), also stimulates and elaborates a profound reflection on the bewilderment and natural attraction of the artistic gesture (from time to time in the name of fierce irony, desperate incredulity, the elegiac testimony) for evil, pain, the martial distortion of the human, social and political context

Abstract: One of the most widely debated topics in Slavic linguistics has always been verbal aspect, which takes different forms because of the various grammaticalization paths which led to its emergence. In the formation of the category of aspect in Slavic languages, a key role was played by the morphological mechanism of prefixation (a.k.a. preverbation), whereby the prefixes (which originally performed the function of markers of adverbial meanings) came to act as markers of boundedness. This volume contains thirteen articles on the mechanism of prefixation, written by leading international scholars in the field of verbal aspect. Ancient and modern Slavic varieties, as well as non-Slavic and even non-Indo-European languages, are represented, making the volume an original and significant contribution to Slavic as well as typological linguistics

Abstract: The volume presents a critical reading of the Moscow notebooks by Osip Mandel'štam. The poems are analysed one by one in chronological order, verse by verse, and are accompanied by an interlinear translation. Special attention is paid to their arrangement in poryvy, "impulses" embracing and connecting several compositions, and to their connection with the Mandel'štamian contemporary prose. The aim is to offer on the one hand a support for the reading of the verses, on the other an interpretative glimpse of the work of the late Mandel'štam as a whole

Abstract: What is the common aspect linking the studies of this volume, which take into account very different authors such as Conte, Palazzeschi, Zanzotto, Caproni, Rosselli, Biagini, some crespuscolar poets, Leopardi, Annovi, Giuliani, and even some twentieth-century translations of R.M. Rilke? They share the belief that the poetic word - which etymologically has "creative" powers - generates cognitive perspectives altering our perception of the world. Reading poetry does not have an effect confined to the page and to the moment, but affects our relationship with reality, changes it and enriches it in an often unsuspected and surprising way. In this collection, the authors try to bring out a sort of epistemology of poetry, in order to clarify how it can contribute to illuminating our experience of the world and of ourselves. The reader is then invited to look beyond the boundaries traditionally established by the various disciplines, in the direction of mutual contamination and openness to innovative and unprecedented suggestions

Abstract: The oldest translation in a modern language (vulgarization) of Caesar's commentaries, published in 1438 by Pier Candido Decembrio and dedicated to Filippo Maria Visconti and Inigo d'Avalos, is published for the first time in a critical edition. The text is presented by a rich introduction, which provides a detailed overview of the work, with particular regard to the dedications that accompany it, the style of translation and the Latin exemplar used by the humanist, recognized in a code of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, which, already severely damaged during World War II, was restored at the request of the author of the research at the Government of Saxony, revealing the exceptional ecdotic revision made by the Decembrium on the corpus Caesarianum. The online edition of the volume is accompanied by a special appendix to the philological introduction, which includes all the errors and lessons of the manuscripts that have passed on the vulgarization

Abstract: The present book addresses a wide range of problems concerning the history of Eastern Slavic culture in its interaction with cultural models of Western Europe. This collective work is the final result of the French-Italian conference "Fratture e integrazioni tra Russia, mondo slavo orientale e Occidente. Storia e civiltà letteraria dal Medioevo all'epoca contemporanea" (University of Florence, April 16-17, 2015): the complexity of cultural relations between Russia, the Slavic East and the European West is analysed by enhancing the variety of points of view and by using different methodological approaches and perspectives provided by different fields of study. Here, new materials and new analytical methods are presented, useful for studying the complex interactions between the Western cultural tradition and the Eastern Slavic one from the Middle Ages to the present day. The "fractures" and "integrations" are identified through critical reading or rereading of texts, works and authors who have taken part in the construction and development of cultural relations between the different European areas

Abstract: This book is the second part of the work devoted to the tourist guide as a meeting place between lexicon and images of cultural heritage, a work resulting from the colloquium which took place on June 11 and 12, 2015 in Pisa and Florence. This volume focuses on the image, as a representation of reality but also as a place from which the imagination can be exercised by evoking mental representations (the imaginary). The three proposed sections (I. Les images du voyage; II. L'art dans le guide; III. Les guides entre imaginaire et propagande) intend to suggest routes of reflection around the tourist guide, an object that has never ceased to transform and which, through the lexicon and images, has been able to transmit the most different and picturesque cultural heritages

Abstract: This monograph examines, for the first time, the reception of the poetic legacy of the Latin poet Horace (65 B.C.-8 B.C.) in the poetics courses written and taught at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy (17th -first half of the 18th century), in particular in the areas of poetic theory, metrics, lyric poetry. The analysis focuses on three main aspects: theoretical recommendations on the role of the poet and the purpose of poetry, as well as on inventio , dispositio , elocutio , drawn mostly from Ars poetica; the use of Horace's poetry in the teaching of metrics and the exemplification of metrical schemes (particularly Alcaic and Sapphic stanzas and the dactilic hexameter); the ways in which Horace's poetry is taken as a model in the composition of poetry, which was a mandatory exercise of the poetics course. The author analyzed the reception of Horace taking into account, on the one hand, the centuries-long Christian reception of the poet, and, on the other, the conception of poetry prevalent at the Mohyla Academy, which saw poetry as an ancillary discipline of moral philosophy, the purpose of which was to contribute to the education of devout Christians and loyal subjects. This approach was in line with the prevalent tendency in European religious schools, whether Protestant, Catholic or Orthodox, especially after the Reformation and the subsequent Counter-Reformation, to see poetry as a rhetorical instrument of Christian morality

Abstract: The book contains the philological edition of the corpus of Hittite texts currently collected under number 631 of the Catalogue des Textes Hittites by E. Laroche. They constitute the description of religious ceremonies celebrated in connection with the atmospheric phenomenon of thunder, interpreted as a manifestation of the god of the storm, which was the greatest divinity of the Hittite pantheon. The documents of major extension, presented with a transliteration and translation, are accompanied by a philological comment, aimed at highlighting their structure as well as lexical and grammatical peculiarities, and are introduced by an analysis of dating conducted on a palaeographic basis. The minor fragments are presented in transcription and, where possible, in translation. The text discusses the possible attribution of each fragment to the corpus, based on structure and content. The critical edition of the texts is preceded by an introductory chapter in which the nature of thunder-related festivities and their status in the Hittite cultural calendar are discussed

Abstract: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need" seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani's memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's "writing beyond the heart"

Abstract: This volume aims at investigating the reasons why, in Turkey, individual memory and construction of subjectivity (both intended in the broad sense) go beyond the boundaries of the individual in order to incorporate matters concerning national identity. The "writings on the self", be them confessions, memoirs, autobiographical or biographical novels, have been chosen as tools for the comprehension of the construction mechanisms of individual and collective memory. The issues related to the building of the modern Turkish nation, with its traumatic historical events and the approaches to the theme of memory by those who were excluded from the dominant and hegemonic narrative, constitute the core themes around which the authors' reflection develops

Abstract: Ivan Aksenov is one of the most neglected figures of early 20th Century Russian literature. The few scholars who have noticed his great originality interpret his verses above all as an application of the principles of Cubist painting in poetry, in the light of the experiences of Mayakovsky &Co.; these investigations denote a poor knowledge of the author, who did not fail to declare the incompatibility between the two artistic media. This book is therefore the first systematic study of Aksenov's poetry, starting from a reflection on the philological state of the texts, to move on to the reconstruction of his aesthetic thought and to integral analyzes of poetic compositions. An unprecedented theory of art emerges from this - which develops ideas of Tolstoy, Vjaceslav Ivanov and Freud - and a production in verses characterized by daring metric innovations and a flow-of-consciousness poetics of the with a subtly humorous urbanism that recalls authors such as Apollinaire and Cendrars. It is thus intended to highlight the peculiarity of Aksenov, the only Russian poet from the Futurist area to have participated, even for a few months, in the cultural life of Paris in the 1910s and an advocate at home of themes and stylistic elements partly related to the French esprit nouveau

Abstract: From a perspective of great scientific and didactic relevance, the volume is part of today's theoretical-methodological reflections on humanistic computer science and digital humanities, dealing with different aspects of the application of digital technologies to the study of the language of art. The contributions, arising from the research project Lessico multilingue dei Beni Culturali (Multilingual lexicon of cultural heritage), conducted by the University of Florence in collaboration with other Italian and foreign universities, describe numerous online resources and platforms for communication, organization and sharing of applications and data, extremely useful for scholars of vocabulary and specialized translation in multiple languages, in particularly in the field of cultural and artistic heritage

Abstract: This volume intends to pay homage to Marcello Garzaniti on the occasion of his 60th birthday and thirtieth anniversary of his career, in recognition of his generous commitment in the field of research, popularisation of science and teaching. The heterogeneity of the contributions offered by colleagues, students and friends testifies to the scholar's erudition and multifaceted interests. The five sections composing the volume range from the history of culture to the history of the Slavic ecclesiastical literary civilisation, from linguistics to Slavic literature, without neglecting the history of Slavistics. The volume is completed by the bibliography of the scientific production of Marcello Garzaniti

Abstract: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author's proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation

Abstract: With the additional help of archival material, the first part of this volume reconstructs the history of the Institute for Eastern Europe (Ipeo), founded in Rome in 1921, whose activity was characterized by a remarkable editorial production closely connected to the birth and development of Italian Slavic Studies. Despite the inevitable coexistence with fascism and the submission, somehow, to a line of conduct which especially in the 1930s accompanied the regime's policy, the Ipeo's activity was marked above all by a sincere desire to spread knowledge of a world which was still quite unknown in the Italian context under many aspects. The Ipeo operated until the end of World War II, when the government funding and even the political and cultural assumptions which had favoured its birth ceased because of the changed geopolitical context, determined by the end of the conflict. The second part of the volume covers the General alphabetical catalogue of all Ipeo's publications, accompanied by a Chronological catalogue and by an Index of authors, editors, translators and preface writers

Abstract: The volume Trasparenze ed epifanie. Quando la luce diventa letteratura, arte, storia, scienza ("Transparencies and epiphanies. When light becomes literature, art, history, science") brings together thirty contributions presented at the interdisciplinary conference organized at the University of Florence on the occasion of the International Year of Light 2015. Scholars in the fields of science, history, history of art and cinema, philosophy, philology, Italian and foreign literature and literature literary theory from seven departments of the Florentine university introduce various meanings and symbolic representations of the concept light during the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary epoch. Moreover, they also propose a common "luminous journey" in the civilisation of open scientific and cultural discussion

Abstract: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work's itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'

Abstract: The volume, originating from the 5th Slavic Linguistics Meeting (Rome, 25-27 September 2014), reflects the state of the most recent research carried out in Italy in this discipline. It aims to continue the tradition already started at the end of the 1980s from the series Morphosyntactic problems of Slavic languages (Bologna 1988, 1990, 1991; Padua 1994, 1995), which has been recently renewed in the volumes published after the Meetings of Bergamo (2007), Padua (2008), Forlì (2010) and Milan (2014). This contribution testifies an expansion of interest beyond the boundaries of morphosyntax, towards other areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, such as pragmatics, semantics, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. Due to the variety of topics and methodologies used, the publication could interest not only those who carry out both theoretical and applied research in the field of Slavic languages, but also scholars in General linguistics

Abstract: These days, it seems that many people are concerned with borders, confines, and walls more than ever. We chose "transcending borders" as the theme and title of the volume, hinting at the concept of bridging boundaries, in any possible context and domain, metaphorical or concrete. By proposing this theme, we want to reflect on the opportunities that are to be gained through the overcoming of borders, on what can be accomplished by calling into question old norms, on the implementations of less familiar norms, and on the renegotiation of individual limits and horizons. This collection gathers seven articles on the theme of borders: the first four articles deal with Chinese presence in Italy today; the three articles in the field of Japanese Studies elaborate on the concept of borders in literary terms

Abstract: The volume collects the contributions presented at the first Seminar organized in 2014 in Florence by the Section of Intercultural Studies of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Intercultural Studies on the theme "Languages, Literatures and Migrant Cultures". The essays - written by authors from the area of German studies and Germanic philology, Lusitanistics, Hispano-American studies, Sinology and Comparative studies - analyse various aspects of the theme of "migration" in the variety of its expressions: alongside strictly linguistic observations, they investigate the phenomenon of intercultural contact on a social, historical, literary and anthropological level

Abstract: This book challenges critical approaches that argue for Giacomo Leopardi's and Samuel Beckett's pessimism and nihilism. Such approaches stem from the quotation of Leopardi in Beckett's monograph Proust, as part of a discussion about the removal of desire. Nonetheless, in contrast to ataraxia as a form of ablation of desire, the desire of and for the Other is here presented as central in the two authors' oeuvres. Desire in Leopardi and Beckett is read as lying at the cusp between the theories of Jacques Lacan and Emmanuel Levinas, a desire that splits as much as it moulds the subject when called to address the Other (inspiring what Levinas terms 'infinity' as opposed to 'totality,' an infinity pitted against the nothingness crucial to pessimist and nihilist readings)

Abstract: Retracing Dessí's collaboration in the magazines "L'Orto", "Primato" and "Cronache" directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer's artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime

Abstract: In early modern England, the birth of a human being with congenital physical deformities was an event which aroused horror and fascination, disgust and morbid curiosity. In a time when modern science was taking its first steps, this kind of prodigy sometimes appeared as a sort of divine punishment for a moral fault, sometimes as a bizarre pastime, or political weapon, or a pre-medical investigation. By deepening such a multifaceted and constantly changing phenomenon, "A Marvellous and Strange Event" tries to build a complex analysis perspective on the English cultural and social history between the 16th and 18th century

Abstract: This study discusses DPs, Phi-features and Tense in Abyssinian Semitic languages. DPs and TPs have parallel structures. Their subjects are generated within the projection of lexical categories which move to Spec positions of associated non-lexical categories (Fukui 2006). Aspect is indicated by inserting different vowel patterns into the roots of base stems. Tense, however, is indicated by different forms of verb to be (Jelinek 2002). In North Abyssinian Semitic languages, verbs and nouns have similar patterns to indicate plurality and this is due to an economy constraint on the grammar (Siddiqi 2009). Phi-features in the affixes and independent pronouns are closely related (Buccellati 1996). We may assume the development of the latter into the former or vice versa via a clitic stage (Fuß 2005)

Abstract: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì's well-known "Dimore vitali"), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his "teacher" stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by "gratitude", "esteem" and "trust"

Abstract: Through the analysis of the predetermined verbal forms of the Povest 'vremennych let (11th-12th centuries), this book sheds light on the aspectual meanings of verbs with prefix, in order to verify the degree of evolution of the Slavic-oriental aspectual system in the most ancient phase of its attestation. The study on prefixes and the ways in which they interact with the actional characteristics of the starting verbs allows us to identify the consequences of prefixing at the lexical, actional and aspectual level. Terminative verbs with prefix acquire the resultative value ("protoperfective") and are subjected, in part, to secondary suffixation, a phenomenon that will contribute to the grammaticalization of the aspectual category in Russian and other Slavic languages

Abstract: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London's Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the 'sane other', shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period

Abstract: The aim of this work is to identify the factors which contributed to create Lourdes' success. This analysis starts from the comparison between the 18 apparitions in Lourdes with some similar and contemporary episodes occurring in France, but with a somewhat different outcome, intended as success among the pilgrims. The initial historical, political and cultural contextualization work is accompanied by the analysis of some key aspects of the Catholic Church of that time. In reference to the purpose of the text, two areas are analysed more in-depth: medical science and literature, both closely connected with the question of miracles

Abstract: La spugna è la mia anima. Omaggio a Piero Ceccucci ("The sponge is my soul. Tribute do Pietro Ceccucci") is a work born from the sincere affection and esteem of many Italian and foreign colleagues who enthusiastically welcomed the idea of paying homage to their friend and colleague Piero Ceccucci and to his long career as a university professor of Portuguese and Brazilian language and literature at various Italian universities, such as Perugia, Milan, University "Bocconi" of Milan, Genoa and Florence. This volume aims to be a fair recognition of the commitment and dedication that Prof. Piero Ceccucci has addressed to the teaching of Portuguese language and literature in Italy, but also to remind him the gratitude of University of Florence, to which, we are sure, he will always be tied

Abstract: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence's bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews

Abstract: This research offers an integral analysis of the aesthetic thought of the director, playwright and art theorist Nikolaj Nikolaevic Evreinov. The work focuses on the analysis of the treaty The revelation of art, written in Paris in the 1930s, which represents the greatest testimony of the author's research in the aesthetic field. Henceforth, a connection is offered between the known aspects of Evreinov's theatrical thought, relating to the period of the avant-garde in Russia, and others, of a broader nature, which have long been precluded from being known. Through insights on the Russian theatrical history of the early 20th century, reflections touching textual criticism, the history of aesthetic thought and Russian criticism, the complex figure of an artist emerges against the background of the culture expressed by post-revolutionary Russian emigration. An artist who, as an intellectual, begins a dialogue with the Western European cultural tradition. This book thus intends to restore the visibility, as well as an exegetical and historiographic completeness, of Evreinov's rich legacy as a writer, a philosopher and a critic

Abstract: The author addresses the issue of the conquest of Caucasus at the hand of the Tsarist army, investigating the attitude held towards this event by three of the major authors of nineteenth-century Russian literature: Aleksandr Puškin (1799-1837), Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) and Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), expressed through some of their most famous works. As for Puškin, the analysis touches the three main Southern Poems, as well as the account of his trip to Arzrum in 1829 on the Russian-Turkish war theatre, and the drama Boris Godunov, dedicated above all to the matter of power, in which however the will to create an empire imposes itself. The analysis of Lermontov's works, in addition to the poem The novice, set in Georgia, is also about the short story Bela, which is part of the 'novel' A hero of our time. The short story was chosen for its clear display of the Russian officers' attitude of contempt towards the indigenous Caucasians. The analysis of Tolstoy starts with the young author's position in the 1850s, when he was a voluntary fighter in the Caucasus, as shown in the story The raid. Then, the analysis moves to the position of the 'mature' Tolstoy, a pacifist and anti-militarist, who expresses his ideas in the long story Hadji Murat

Abstract: This volume collects the interventions of the post-doctoral fellows and PhD students of the Babes Bolyai University of Cluj Napoca, the University of Bucharest and the University of Florence (Doctorate in Mediterranean Languages and Cultures; Doctoral School of Comparative Languages, Literatures and Cultures, specialisation in Language, Literature, Philology: Intercultural Perspectives) presented at the seminar "Innesti e ibridazioni tra spazi culturali" (Florence, 22nd and 23rd November 2012). The contributions focus on the idea of literary and cultural hybridizations between different geographies. Some contributions, in particular those by the Romanian authors, account for the most problematic aspects of the contemporary world using interdisciplinary approaches. Abstract: The question on possible contact points between linguistics and literary studies has arisen several times in the international discussion on German studies. This volume takes part in this debate and, by enhancing the specific features of both fields of study, it aims at contributing to the search for new ways of comparison and scientific exchange. The eight essays collected in this miscellanea are characterized by the interpenetration of the literary and linguistic points of view, and develop paths of analysis in the following research fields: theory of literary comedy and of literary genres; linguistic studies of the literary text; language as an object of literary analysis; teaching of German as a second language (DaF)

Abstract: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi's careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí's presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the "mover of culture" and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer's most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before

Abstract: In Luigi Meneghello's work, the representation of the plant world refers to a subtext of images and symbols: a network of botanical isotopies which transforms into a system while allowing for an alternative and unprecedented reading. From the pages of Libera nos a malo (1963), up to the 'posthumous letters' of L'appendistato (2012), what the author calls «inframondo verdastro» becomes the starting point for the restoration of a literary biosphere, one which is constantly crossed by a double movement: intertextual memory and continuous interaction between Italian, English and the dialect from Vicenza (Italy). Meneghello's 'reflected garden' thus reveals itself in all its semantic value, and sheds light on a theme of surprisingly great complexity, and also a subject of particular interest for literary ecocriticism

Abstract: Leo Tolstoy's works are not only masterpieces of world literature, but also mirrors of their time, of the socio-cultural transformations which took place in Tsarist Russia; it is from this perspective that, in this work, this great writer's production is analysed. In particular, the author examines the evolution of the institution of marriage in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, starting from the reading of Family Happiness , Anna Karenina and The Kreutzer Sonata. If Family happiness preludes to the crisis of the arranged marriage, its implosion is beautifully described in Anna Karenina . Anna announces the definitive death of this institution when she defies the society of her time by not hiding her adultery and, on the contrary, by exhibiting it and trying to legitimize it.The Kreutzer Sonata, lastly, demonstrates the successful overcoming of the aristocratic marriage model, replaced by the bourgeois one

Abstract: This book outlines a short profile of Italy's linguistic history, and discusses some current problems related to globalization, the values of the mother tongue and multilingualism, and the need to re-found the Italian and European linguistic policy on a new basis. Contemporary Italian is a particularly stratified cultural asset in which, alongside the many new elements, one can grasp the clear and precious signs of a very strong connection with the past. Today, in the European scene, Italy indeed stands out for its accentuated multilingualism and the long duration of its national language. On the one hand, the extraordinary animal and plant biodiversity in the country corresponds to an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity; on the other, the Italians feel that the language used by Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio still belongs to them, and has fundamental traits coinciding with their own. Such richness is particularly appreciated abroad (as evidenced by the growing demand for Italian speakers in the world) and deserves to be better acknowledged by the younger generations. It also deserves to be protected and valued with appropriate tools, starting with a decisive rethinking of the country's linguistic policy

Abstract: This volume represents a targeted exploration of the theme of identity and conflict in the context of Tuscan Studies, an exploration which is enriched by the diverse disciplinary perspectives encompassed (history, literature, linguistics). The essays, which span the period from the nineteenth century to the present, examine conflict in terms of war but also as a form of struggle between different demographic groups or conflict based on gender and identity politics. This collection thus signals an original mode of analysis of the region, while drawing on the proven interest, both scholarly and popular, in its history, literature, language, art and society

Abstract: Recent work on second language acquisition within the generative framework has pointed out interfaces (syntax-discourse, syntax-semantics, etc.) as a residual domain of vulnerability in L2. Rather than in core syntax, it is at the interface level that the divergence between native and non-native grammars has been shown to be more prominent. In this book the investigation of answering strategies and the focalization of new information subjects, which require access to the syntax-discourse interface, will be pursued. Data is collected through an oral elicitation task on Finnish and Italian, a rather unexplored language pair, in various stages of language development: advanced and intermediate L2 acquisition, L1 under L2 attrition, early bilingualism, child monolingual L1 development

Abstract: Starting with the great authors of the past, autobiographical requests have been a distinctive feature of Scandinavian literatures. Today, after the modernist experiments of ego building, there is the affirmation of narrative and poetic works which question the boundary between autobiographical truth and fiction, further stimulating the lively, innovative and articulated debate on autobiography in Northern Europe, which has been in development since the 1980s. The 24 authors of the volume (Italian and Scandinavian scholars who are active in Italy or abroad, Scandinavian researchers and writers interested in Italy) illustrate the plurality and uses of autobiographical texts from the 16th century to current days, illuminate areas of a vast territory, investigate little studied texts or go back to questioning the classics

Abstract: This book examines the feeling that we often refer to as 'nostalgia' from the perspective of writers and artists located on the (imperial, Soviet, and Post-Soviet) periphery of Russian culture who regard the center of the culture from which they have been excluded with varying degrees of longing and ambivalence. The literary and artistic texts analyzed here have been shaped by these author's ruminations on social and psychological marginalization, a process that S. Boym has called 'reflective nostalgia' and that the authors of this volume also refer to as 'toska'

Abstract: Cyril Loukaris (1570-1638), Orthodox patriarch of Alexandria and later of Constantinople, is a fascinating and controversial figure. In addition to being a religious authority, the patriarch proved to be a first-rate politician and diplomat, capable of weaving a vast network of relationships. An acute mediator between cultures, he was a prominent intellectual of his time. The volume, the first of its kind in Italy, collects contributions from scholars of different disciplines, which bring out the multiplicity of cultural and geopolitical plans and areas in which the "Protestant" patriarch Loukaris carried out his activity. For the variety of approaches and areas examined, the essays reflect the many-sided nature of this figure, of which an unpublished sermon and related documents from the Moscow State Archives are published

Abstract: Letture anticanoniche biofiction, dentro e fuori la metafinzione, aims at offering multiple interpretations to biofictions. For the critical analysis of these pieces, identified so far with a 'symptomatic' examination of various fictional texts on a given historical period or person, some possible non-canonical directions have been proposed: a 'horizontal' method, which brings biofiction into the 'fictional galaxy' of a writing subject (as in the case of Michèle Roberts), and then a 'vertical' method, which explores a model-biofiction to deconstruct and then reconstruct the intertwining of the synchronic and diachronic voices of its singular modus operandi. The final part of the volume is dedicated to Mab's Daughters by Judith Chernaik, an extremely interesting case of biofiction 'with possible worlds'. Abstract: What could be the common points between the Literature produced at the imperial court of 9th-10th century in Japan with the one composed in Italy under the rule of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen? Why the Kokinwakashū in Japan and the Sicilian School of Poetry in Italy have been acknowledged as canons for later literary traditions? How did the political power influence the production of court poetry and the role of poets in the court environment? Why two particular poetic forms like the sonnet in Europe and the waka in Japan succeeded to survive until modern times?

Abstract: The essays published here document the most recent linguistic research carried out in the field of Italian Slavistics. The contributions collected in the first part of the volume analyze the morphological and syntactic structures of various Slavic languages; the second part is dedicated to linguistic use; the last contains three experimental studies on the acquisition of Slavic languages, a particularly promising research area both for glottodidactic applications and for the contribution to studies on the relationship between thought and language. There are several Slavic languages studied (Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovenian, Ukrainian dialects, southern Slavic languages, including the spoken languages of the Pomaks in the Rhodope mountains), different perspectives (diachronic and synchronic) and various methodological approaches, testifying to the richness and progressive maturation of linguistic studies within Italian Slavistics

Abstract: The volume contains articles concerning the influence of Latinitas in the territory now occupied by Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus'. The articles, all published in English, range from history to literature and to cultural history and the history of ideas. They analyze the issue of building an identity, either real or imagined, from different points of view. Among the most interesting topics are the classical origins of myths and ideas that have helped build the national identities of those that constituted the ethnic mosaic of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the role of Neo-Latin poetry, as a conveyor of Latinitas, in the development of national identities. Because of the significance of Latinitas for both common European cultural traditions and the national cultures, literatures and languages of Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine, it is to be hoped that the subject will continue to attract a good level of attention in the future

This explains the heterogeneity of the contributions, which focus primarily on Russian literature but also extend to other Slavic literatures, and then to Russian religious and secular history, to cultural relations between Italy and Russia and to some pages of the modern anti-Semitism. The volume opens drawing a profile and the bibliography of professor De Michelis, including his vast scientific production and a dense list of publicity contributions in which the rigour of the scholar and his civil passion are reflected

Abstract: This volume is a collection of eight articles by different scholars from Japan, China, and Italy. Although the topics covered belong to different fields, such as literature, history, linguistics and sociology, all of the included works are geographically focused on cultural aspects of East Asia. The interdisciplinary character of the collection is meant to provide a broader perspective on the cultures and societies of the Far East, nonetheless the individual articles are each based on specific and focused research. The authors featured in the volume are Eduardo Barberis, Edoardo Gerlini, Tiziana Lioi, Massimiliano Tomasi, Pierantonio Zanotti, Tanina Zappone and Zhou Yuhui. The volume is also proud to include a short piece by professor Takei Kyōzō on Omowaku utaawase

Abstract: The Italian contributions to the XIII International Congress of Slavists (Ljubljana, 15-21 August 2003) had a very limited circulation between the participants in the congress and the restricted circle of experts. Considering the high scientific value of the individual contributions, to which we continue to refer in the framework of Slavic literature, it was decided to publish these acts in the series "Library of Slavic Studies" also to celebrate the ten years of its existence. Faced with a consolidated tradition of studies in the philological and literary field, Italian Slavistics of the beginning of the millennium found itself facing new needs. On the one hand, a new generation of linguists has established themselves, who have developed a series of innovative research on Slavic languages, especially in the contrastive field. On the other hand, new research paths have developed in contemporary literature, especially in relation to the most recent historical circumstances which have seen profound cultural transformations in the Slavic countries themselves, with the need to reconstruct consolidated literary canons also on the basis of the literature of emigration. The same philological research has been able to question itself again on its role by taking up in a different form traditional issues such as the Cyril-Methodian question, the problem of biblical citations or the debate on the Latin Slavia and the Orthodox Slavia, as well as the more traditional ecdotic issues manifesting a new sensitivity starting from religious issues. Alberto Alberti is researcher in Slavistics at the University of Bologna

Abstract: Starting from the main theories about the imaginary - from the Freudian category of Unheimliche and the Todorovian category of hésitation up to the most recent contributions - the volume highlights the imaginary elements of instability in Flann O'Brien's narrative. In particular, the author analyses the discontinuities and irreconcilable contradictions of the Irish writer's textual systems, the idiosyncratic and fragmented representation of the characters, the ambiguous coexistence of natural and supernatural, the problematic relationship between signifier and signified. Malapropisms, neologisms, linguistic tics, nonsense and a series of meta-narrative games seem to compromise the search for reliable answers within the Obrienian cosmos in which truth is, in fact, an odd number

Abstract: The overbearing affirmation of the body, with its instincts and impulses, and an effort aimed at suppressing that same push: this powerful dialectic deeply marks Beckett's works, and becomes a crucial reflection of the more general tension between a vain waiting for the end and the need to move forward. The close investigation of the texts suggests a special link with the thought of Arthur Schopenhauer, revealing in particular the contiguity between the concept of Noluntas and the search, by many of Beckett's characters, for "will-lessness", a peculiar state of quiet and abstraction from reality. Starting from these observations, this study investigates the theme of the body within Beckett's poetics, especially in light of his relationship with the Schopenhauer's Will theory

Abstract: The volume contains eighteen original essays, written - upon invitation - by internationally renowned scholars from various Italian or foreign universities. The major issues that recent papyrus discoveries have raised (or re-proposed) on the text and interpretation of several of Menander's comedies are addressed, outlining an authoritative and fully updated picture of our knowledge in this regard. Among other things, the first fruits of the edition (with photography) of a new, previously unpublished fragment of the famous (and discussed) Michigan papyrus are offered. All reports present remarkable aspects of editorial novelty, with philological, linguistic and literary comments, relevant for the cultural debate on Menandro's comedy, and therefore for the history of ancient theater and its evolution, as well as for the study of the influences exercised from the New Comedy on the later Latin and Italian tradition

Abstract: Elegantie lingue latine is the masterpiece of Lorenzo Valla's reflection on language, through which the humanist gave birth to a real re-foundation of Latin. To date we still do not have a modern, scientifically based edition of the text characterising the various editorial phases of the work, on which the author worked for over ten years and which, arbitrarily and by the author's own will, was in circulation long before its official publication. This research is part of a future complete edition of the text: the first complete edition of a book of the "Elegantie" is presented, limited to the fifth book on the "disputatio verborum", based on the examination, albeit partial, of the handwritten tradition and on a global reconsideration of the editorial history work

Abstract: The volume contains the text of nineteen contributions, elaborated by professors of eight European universities, linked together in the "Réseau Thématique Plutarque" (Madrid, Málaga, Coimbra, Paris X, Leuven, Groningen, Salerno, Florence) and intends to comment on the news provided from Plutarch on the life and activities, the importance and influence of the great figures of ancient Athens. Relevant contributions are proposed on famous political figures (Teseo, Solone, Pericle and Cimone); on the great Athenian philosophers (in particular Socrates, the tradition of the Platonic Academy and of the Peripate); on the astrologer Metone and Epimenide, the purifier of Athens; but also on famous women (in particular, Aspasia). Two chapters deal with the historical situation of Athens at the time of the Diadochi and in the Roman age. Two other chapters deal with the reception of two specific plutarchic works during the Renaissance: Gloria degli Ateniesi (Glory of Athenians) e Detti degli Ateniesi (Sayings of the Athenians)
