    Abstract: Die Autorin erörtert eine Denkweise über digitale Technik, die sich auf den neuen Materialismus stützt. Wenn moralische Forderungen die Grenzen dessen übersteigen, was vernünftigerweise von Menschen erwartet werden kann, dann lassen sie sich als zu anspruchsvoll kritisieren. Im Hinblick darauf, was für eine erfolgreiche Verteidigung von Überforderungseinwänden erforderlich ist, werden intuitionen-, theorie- und erklärungsbasierte Strategien geprüft. Dabei wird die These vertreten, dass Überforderungseinwände verteidigt werden können, wenn sich eine grundlegende und eigenständige Erklärung dafür finden lässt, weshalb anspruchsvolle moralische Auffassungen überfordernd sein können. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Ansätzen von Bernard Williams, Douglas W. Der vorliegende Band spürt diesen kulturellen Transformationsprozessen anhand der Intertextualitätsstrategie des Hieronymus nach. Das Erkenntnisinteresse ist dabei zweigeteilt in einen methodischen und einen inhaltlichen Teil. Einerseits werden digitale Verfahren der Zitatanalyse (weiter)entwickelt und evaluiert. Mit den computergestützten Verfahren wird der Bestand an Zitaten am Beispiel der Aeneis um mehr als ein Drittel deutlich erweitert und dabei zugleich das theoretische Zitatkonzept maßgeblich geschärft. Andererseits wird mit hermeneutischen Verfahren eine Zitattypologie erstellt, mittels derer nicht nur die ‚Grenze‘ der Textinterpretation aufgezeigt, sondern auch ein differenzierteres Bild der Zitiertechnik des Hieronymus gezeichnet wird. There are basically two strands of established theories: use-based and truth-conditional, with the latter being the dominant variety. This dominance has been questioned recently by linguists who embrace a research paradigm that is known as construction grammar.     Abstract: The aim of this book is to investigate how definiteness is expressed in Polish, a language which is claimed to have no definite and in-definite articles. The central question is how the difference in definiteness is indicated between 'a woman' and 'the woman' in Polish. In English, the definite article 'the' and the indefinite article 'a' express the category of definiteness explicitly. Since definiteness is also relevant in articleless languages, there are other means to indicate that a nominal phrase is definite or indefinite. This study is delimited to four means for expressing definiteness in Polish, which are demonstratives, aspect, case alternation, and information structure. Each strategy is investigated independently from the others, although they interact in a complex way, which is shown at the end of this book resulting in a decision tree. Polish is not investigated in isolation, however, the study is complemented by comparisons with other Slavic languages and also with a Polish dialect called 'Upper Silesian', which differs from Polish. The analysis in this book is based on Löbner’s theory of 'Concept Types and Determination' (CTD). Löbner’s distinction of the four concept types (sortal, relational, functional, individual) is crucial since definiteness phenomena under discussion can be explained. Therefore, the interaction of the four concept types with the four definiteness strategies plays a central role in this book

Und obwohl der Nutzen einer palliativmedizinischer Versorgung im gesamten Behandlungsverlauf wissenschaftlich gezeigt wurde, gibt es eine Forschungslücke hinsichtlich der organisatorischen und sozialen Bedingungen der Integration bzw. der Gründe für ihr Misslingen. Der Titel dieser qualitativen Untersuchung, „Sterben dürfen im Krankenhaus, beinhaltet keinen Aufruf zur aktiven Sterbehilfe. Vorgestellt werden vielmehr Studienergebnisse, die Widersprüche zwischen gesundheitspolitischen Überlegungen, ethisch-moralischem Anspruch, normativen Erwartungen und klinischer Praxis in der Behandlung Schwerstkranker und Sterbender aufzeigen: Im Kontext eines Akutkrankenhauses mit einer ökonomisierten „Durchlaufmedizin und routinierten „Arbeit im Akkord verunsichern Sterbende oder Langlieger als nicht heilbare Patient*innen den medizinischen Enthusiasmus. Zudem erschüttert die Behandlungspraxis im Krankenhaus die ärztlichen Ideale von Zeit und Raum für die Sterbebegleitung. Die vielfache Fehlversorgung Sterbender im Krankenhaus ist verbunden mit einer prekären Arbeitssituation – nicht nur im Hinweis auf den Pflegekräftemangel. Um den zentralen Behandlungsauftrag der Akutbehandlung bzw.     Abstract: This investigation sheds light on Isaac Argyrus and his scholarly work in 14th-century Constantinople on the basis of his book production: it　thus fills a major desideratum of cultural-historical, paleographical, and textual critical studies on the Palaeologan Age. After a brief introduction summing up the state of the art, the available textual sources are discussed in order to define the timeframe of Argyrus' life and to gather all information about him and his career. A complete lists of the manuscript collection copied by Argyrus introduces the pivotal aspect of the research: the analysis of Argyrus’ handwriting in relation with the contemporary graphic context. Since Argyrus seems to have mastered two types of handwriting, a formal one and a cursive one, his graphic training must have been based on two differed models: on the one side the hand of his teacher, Nicephorus Gregoras, on the other one a writing style widespread in the XIV century, known as Τῶν῾ Οδηγῶν. The paleographical point of view leads also to the reconstruction of Argyrus' scholarly enviroment, through a detailed description of hands of the scribes who collaborated with him. The writing procedure followed by Argyrus in the composition of his theological treatises eanbles a sound definition of his skills as author. Descriptive reports of each analysed codex conclude the volume. This book shows an example how the use and analysis of material sources, such as manuscripts, can give a innovative and fruitful perspective in investigation about the scholary writings practices in the Byzantine age

    Abstract: Founded in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles as part of the League of Nations’ system, the ILO is still today the main organization responsible for the international organization of work and the improvement of working conditions in the world. Widely recognized for its efforts in building international labour standards, the ILO remains little studied by development specialists and historians. This book intends to fill this gap and traces the history of international development and its early pioneers, through an analysis of the activities of the International Labour Office, the Secretariat of the International Labour Organization, between 1930 and 1946. In this book, development is used as a key to questioning the ILO's place and function in the expanding inter-war world. The development practices and discourses that emerged in the 1930s were mainly intended to support the ILO's universalization strategy, which was made necessary by the events that shook Europe at the time. Development discourses and practices were also part of the esprit du temps, as they were closely linked to the affirmation of the planist and rationalist ideas of the 1930s. However, development for the ILO was not reduced to a project of economic modernization, but was seen as a tool for social engineering, as evidenced by the ILO's missions of technical assistance, organized since 1930. The analysis of the expertise work makes it possible to highlight the logics that prevailed in technical assistance, which was more in line with institutional objectives, than with the dissemination of a genuine expertise. This book therefore hopes to bring new insight on the history of internationalism, and international organizations during the inter-war period and the Second World War, as well as on the role of the ILO in the history of international development thinking and practices

The longest surviving ancient work on diseased eyes, the text predates by several centuries corresponding Hippocratic treatises. The Nineveh series represents a systematic array of eye symptoms and therapies, also showing commonalities with Egyptian and Greco-Roman medicine. However, the Hanseatic commercial infrastructure was absent in the North Atlantic, which forced these merchants to develop new trade strategies. Besides a critical re-evaluation of the economic and political conditions, this volume offers a comprehensive study of the organisation of the trade and the methods used to establish and maintain networks between islanders and German merchants. Moreover, it analyses the role and socio-economic position of the communities of merchants with the North Atlantic in their home towns. The book shows that the North Atlantic trade was anything but insignificant. It was a dynamic and integral part of the trade network of the northern German cities, and its study is highly relevant for the economic history of Northern Europe

    Abstract: Mit dem Tractatus contra Graecos (1252) eines anonymen Dominikaners aus dem noch jungen Konvent von Konstantinopel steht ein kontroverstheologisches Werk im Fokus dieses Buches, dessen Besonderheit sich aus seiner vielfältigen Interaktion mit zeitgenössischen Diskursen ergibt und dessen Charakter als paradigmatisch für die ost-westliche Konfliktkonstellation des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters samt ihren Auswirkungen auf heutige wechselseitige Wahrnehmungen von Kirche(n) und theologischen Traditionen gelten kann. Kontroverstheologie ist zu einem gewissen Grad immer auch „making of“: Im Fall des Tractatus contra Graecos und von Werken seines theologischen Kontextes werden Bilder des jeweils Anderen bzw. des realen oder literarischen Gesprächspartners transportiert, der – wenn er den eigenen Erwartungen an den Verlauf und die Lösung der Frage nach der Kircheneinheit nicht entsprach – vom Partner zum Feindbild wurde. Die Analyse dieser Bilder zeigt: Unter einer oft polemischen Textoberfläche verbirgt sich bisweilen eine weit originellere Theologie, als man diesem Textgenre zutrauen würde. Diese Theologie heraus- und in die Skizze mittelalterlicher Ekklesiologie einzuarbeiten ist das zentrale Leitmotiv dieses Buches

    Abstract: Wang Wei has traditionally been considered one of the greatest of Tang dynasty poets, together with Li Bo and Du Fu. This is the first complete translation into English of all of his poems, and also the first substantial translation of a selection of his prose writings. For the first time, readers encountering his work in English translation will get a comprehensive understanding of Wang Wei‘s range as a poet and prose writer. In spite of the importance of Wang Wei's poetry in the history of Chinese literature, no one has attempted a complete translation of all of his surviving poems moreover, even though he was known for his skill in composing prose pieces in the recognized genres of his day (especially as a writer of commissioned compositions), very little of his prose has been translated. This translation will enable students with limited or no knowledge of Chinese to get a full sense of Wang Wei's compositional range.
