Abstract: This book chooses the topic which is due to the editors' experience in modeling projects in healthcare systems. Also, the transfer of experiences is the reason why mathematical modeling and decision making in the field of health are not given much attention. To this end, the new aspect of this book is the lack of reference needed to carry out projects in the field of health for researchers whose main expertise is not modeling. Students of health, mathematics, management, and industrial engineering fields are in the direct readership with this book. Different projects in the field of healthcare systems can use the topics presented in different chapters mentioned in this book.

Abstract: This book investigates the relationships between gestures and artefacts theoretically and historically, by analyzing different phenomena stemming from a variety of fields such as robotics, archaeology, gesture studies, anthropology, philosophy, and gestural practices like choreography, music performance, and composition. It underlines how embodiment and technology change the interplay between maker and artefact over time and appeals to students and researchers in these fields. Its goal is to enable the reader to understand that the recurring topics and questions as well as multi-level similarities are by no means accidental, but can best be understood if one pays attention to the intertwinements of materiality and cognition, praxis and techne.

Abstract: This book offers an enhanced and comprehensive understanding of control theory and its practical applications. The theoretical chapters on control tools have been meticulously revised and improved to provide a clearer and more insightful exploration of the fundamental concepts and ideas. The explanations have been refined, and new examples have been added to aid comprehension. Additionally, a new chapter on discrete-time systems has been included, delving into an important aspect of control theory. Advanced topics in control are also covered in greater detail, ensuring a comprehensive treatment of the subject matter. The section on experimental applications has been revamped to showcase the application of control ideas in various scenarios. Several chapters have been replaced with fresh content that focuses on controlling new and different experimental prototypes. These examples illustrate how control concepts can be effectively applied in real-world situations. Furthermore, this book introduces a new approach for control of non-minimum phase systems and explores the concept of differential flatness for multiple-input multiple-output systems. Additionally, a fascinating application involving a wheeled pendulum mobile robot has been included. While some chapters have been replaced, the second edition retains the chapters on the control of DC motors and the control of a magnetic levitation system. However, the material in the former chapter is mostly new, and the latter chapter is entirely supported by new control concepts and ideas.

Abstract: This book addresses many applications of artificial intelligence in robotics, namely AI using visual and motional input. Robotic technology has made significant contributions to daily living, industrial uses, and medicinal applications. Machine learning, in particular, is critical for intelligent robots or unmanned/autonomous systems such as UAVs, UGVs, UUVs, cooperative robots, and so on. Humans are distinguished from animals by capacities such as receiving visual information, adjusting to uncertain circumstances, and making decisions to take action in a complex system. Significant progress has been made in robotics toward human-like intelligence; yet, there are still numerous unresolved issues. Deep learning, reinforcement learning, real-time learning, swarm intelligence, and other developing approaches such as tiny-ML have been developed in recent decades and used in robotics. Artificial intelligence is being integrated into robots in order to develop advanced robotics capable of performing multiple tasks and learning new things with a better perception of the environment, allowing robots to perform critical tasks with human-like vision to detect or recognize various objects. Intelligent robots have been successfully constructed using machine learning and deep learning AI technology. Robotics performance is improving as higher quality, and more precise machine learning processes are used to train computer vision models to recognize different things and carry out operations correctly with the desired outcome. We believe that the increasing demands and challenges offered by real-world robotic applications encourage academic research in both artificial intelligence and robotics. The goal of this book is to bring together scientists, specialists, and engineers from around the world to present and share their most recent research findings and new ideas on artificial intelligence in robotics. .

Abstract: This book is a collection of cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary studies on natural, human-made, and coupled human-natural systems, addressing the challenge of developing integrated knowledge from multiple disciplines. The authors explore the structure, function, and dynamic mechanisms of various systems, both natural and human-made, as well as analyze their reciprocal interactions under the concept of “coupled human-natural systems.” These interactions are used to understand feedback, nonlinearities, thresholds, time lags, legacy effects, and path dependencies, emerging across multiple spatial, temporal, and organizational scales. In other words, this book is a collection of advanced research on unique properties of natural and human-made systems, as well as human-environment dynamics, reciprocal relationships, and cross-scale interactions. The authors outline prospects on building a holistic view of social development and coherent sustainability. Among the topics covered are the following: human networks research; adaptation of local people to social and environmental challenges; coupled dynamics of socioeconomic and environmental systems; critical issues in social science climate change research; education for greater sustainability; peace, justice, and strong institutions; advances in cultural traditions and strategies for social stability; innovative development and barriers to sustainable development; economic systems in the age of digital changes and unstable external environments. The scholars analyze how more effective technologies can enhance resilience, reduce vulnerability, and minimize human impacts on natural systems, taking into consideration critical thresholds to prevent harmful feedback to human systems. The authors grasp the complexity of systems by integrating knowledge of constituent subsystems and their interactions. The framework developed by the authors is used to integrate human and natural systems for achieving greater sustainability, covering critical threats, challenges, and best governance approaches and practices. The research results obtained from studies on coupled human-natural systems are stronger, the authors argue, if compared with traditional (discipline) approaches. .

Abstract: Basic Concepts of Decision Theory -- Individual and Collective Decisions -- Group Ordering of Multi-Attribute Objects. .
Abstract: This book describes an original approach to solving tasks of individual and collective choice: classification, ranking, and selection of multi-attribute objects. Object representation with multisets allows considering simultaneously numerical and symbolic variables. In group verbal decision analysis, judgments of all participants are taken into account without a compromise between contradictory. Natural language is used to describe problems and objects, formalize knowledge of experts and preferences of decision makers, and explain results. Verbal methods and technologies are more transparent, less laborious for a person, and weakly sensitive to measurement errors. The book also includes examples of applying new tools in real ill-structured high-dimensional choice tasks. It is intended for researchers, managers, consultants, analysts, and developers as well as for teachers and students of applied mathematics, computer science, information processing, engineering, economics, and management.

Abstract: This book focuses on the observability of hybrid systems. It enables the reader to determine whether and how a hybrid system’s state can be reconstructed from sometimes necessarily partial information. By explaining how available measurements can be used to deduce past and future behaviours of a system, the authors extend this study of observability to embrace the properties of diagnosability and predictability. H-systems shows how continuous and discrete dynamics and their interaction affect the observability of this general class of hybrid systems and demonstrates that hybrid characteristics are not simply generalizations of well-known aspects of traditional dynamics. The authors identify conditions for state reconstruction, prediction and diagnosis of the occurrence of possibly faulty states. The formal approach to proving those properties for hybrid systems is accompanied by simple illustrative examples. For readers who are interested in the use of state estimation for controller design, the book also provides design methods for hybrid state observers and covers their application in some industrial cases. The book’s tutorial approach to the various forms of observability of hybrid systems helps to make H-systems of interest to academic researchers and graduate students working in control and to practitioners using control in an industrial environment.

Abstract: Simultaneous Localization And Mapping -- Least Squares Optimization -- Motivation - When Optimization Fails -- A Robust Back-End for SLAM -- Evaluation.
Abstract: Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has been a long-standing research problem in robotics. It describes the problem of a robot mapping an unknown environment, while simultaneously localizing in it with the help of the incomplete map. This book describes a technique called Switchable Constraints. Switchable Constraints help to increase the robustness of SLAM against data association errors and in particular against false positive loop closure detections. Such false positive loop closure detections can occur when the robot erroneously assumes it re-observed a landmark it has already mapped or when the appearance of the observed surroundings is very similar to the appearance of other places in the map. Ambiguous observations and appearances are very common in human-made environments such as office floors or suburban streets, making robustness against spurious observations a key challenge in SLAM. The book summarizes the foundations of factor graph-based SLAM techniques. It explains the problem of data association errors before introducing the novel idea of Switchable Constraints. We present a mathematical derivation and probabilistic interpretation of Switchable Constraints along with evaluations on different datasets. The book shows that Switchable Constraints are applicable beyond SLAM problems and demonstrates the efficacy of this technique to improve the quality of satellite-based localization in urban environments, where multipath and non-line-of-sight situations are common error sources.

Abstract: “This nuanced, sophisticated, and pathbreaking study of ultimata from ancient times to the present explores the diverse reasons behind their issuance and mixed record of success. Sweijs examines the phenomenon of threat and escalation more generally and offers original insights relevant to the theory and practice of international relations.” — Richard Ned Lebow, Presidential Professor Emeritus at Dartmouth College, USA “This impressive work demonstrates that ultimata are far more successful than is commonly believed. This is a major and potentially troubling fi nding that makes this book a “must-read” for everyone with an interest in in coercion and coercive diplomacy.” — Peter Viggo Jakobsen, Professor at the Royal Danish Defence College Center for War Studies, University of Southern Denmark, Denmark Ultimata feature as a core concept in the coercive diplomacy scholarship. Conventional wisdom holds that pursuing an ultimatum strategy is risky. This book shows that the conventional wisdom is wrong on the basis of a new dataset of 87 ultimata issued from 1920–2020. It provides a historical examination of ultimata in Western strategic, political, and legal thought since antiquity until the present, and offers a four-pronged typology that explains their various purposes and effects: 1) the dictate, 2) the conditional war declaration, 3) the bluff, and 4) the brinkmanship ultimatum. The book yields a better understanding of interstate threat behaviour at a time of surging competition. Background materials can be consulted at www.coercivediplomacy.com. Tim Sweijs is the Director of Research at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies and a Senior Research Fellow at the Netherlands’ War Studies Research Centre. He advises governments and international organisations and has published on international security, contemporary war, coercion, foresight, and defence planning. .

Abstract: This book offers a thorough introduction to the basics and scientific and technological innovations involved in the modern study of reinforcement-learning-based feedback control. The authors address a wide variety of systems including work on nonlinear, networked, multi-agent and multi-player systems. A concise description of classical reinforcement learning (RL), the basics of optimal control with dynamic programming and network control architectures, and a brief introduction to typical algorithms build the foundation for the remainder of the book. Extensive research on data-driven robust control for nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and multi-player systems follows. Data-driven optimal control of networked single- and multi-player systems leads readers into the development of novel RL algorithms with increased learning efficiency. The book concludes with a treatment of how these RL algorithms can achieve optimal synchronization policies for multi-agent systems with unknown model parameters and how game RL can solve problems of optimal operation in various process industries. Illustrative numerical examples and complex process control applications emphasize the realistic usefulness of the algorithms discussed. The combination of practical algorithms, theoretical analysis and comprehensive examples presented in Reinforcement Learning will interest researchers and practitioners studying or using optimal and adaptive control, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and operations research, whether advancing the theory or applying it in mineral-process, chemical-process, power-supply or other industries.

Abstract: This monograph represents the outcome of research effort of the authors on scalable synchronization of large-scale multi-agent systems (MAS). Cooperative control of multi-agent systems has been growing in popularity and is highly interdisciplinary in recent years. The application of synchronization of MAS includes automobile systems, aerospace systems, multiple-satellite GPS, high-resolution satellite imagery, aircraft formations, highway traffic platooning, industrial process control with multiple processes, and more. Most of the proposed protocols in the literature for synchronization of MAS require some knowledge of the communication network such as bounds on the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix and the number of agents. These protocols suffer from scale fragility wherein stability properties are lost for large-scale networks or when the communication graph changes. In the past few years, the authors of this monograph have worked on developing scale-free protocol design for various cases of MAS problems. The key contribution of the monograph is to offer a scale-free design framework and provide scale-free protocols to achieve synchronization, delayed synchronization, and almost synchronization in the presence of input and communication delays, input saturation and external disturbances. The scale-free design framework solely is based on the knowledge of agent models and does not depend on information about the communication network such as the spectrum of the associated Laplacian matrix or size of the network. Drawing upon their extensive work in this area, the authors provide a thorough treatment of agents with higher-order dynamics, different classes of models for agents, and the underlying networks representing actions of the agents. The high technical level of their presentation and their rigorous mathematical approach make this monograph a timely and valuable resource that will fill a gap in the existing literature.

Abstract: This book investigates the phenomenon of overbalancing through an analysis of Japan’s foreign policy during the interbellum. In the mid-1930s, Japan withdrew from a naval arms control framework that had restrained military buildup on both sides of the Pacific Ocean since the early 1920s. By doing so, Japan not only triggered a naval arms race with the United States that exhausted its economy, it also destroyed the last institutionalized structure regulating the relationship between the two Pacific powers. Japan and the United States became caught in a spiral of tensions that culminated with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Puzzling is the fact that the international environment in the Asia-Pacific was relatively stable in the mid-1930s, while Washington was pursuing a policy of accommodation toward Tokyo. By rejecting arms control and engaging in unfettered naval expansion, Japan overbalanced against the United States and began its rush to the Pacific War. The book explains Japan’s overbalancing with a neoclassical realist model that combines the literatures on threat perception and civil-military relations. Amid the Manchurian crisis of 1931-1933, as the Japanese government collaborated with the military institution to address the situation in China, military influence on the formulation of foreign policy surged. The perceptual and policy biases of the military, which include the tendency to distrust other countries’ intentions, to adopt worst-case analyses of international dynamics and to strive to maximize military power, gradually penetrated the decision-making process. Dysfunctions in the preexisting structure of Japanese civil-military relations, engendered by an over-depoliticization of the military institution, allowed the navy to convince policymakers that the United States was inherently hostile to Japan, hence the necessity to prepare for war. The government was brainstormed, adopting the biased military perspective on international affairs. Japan overbalanced in a myopic but conscious way. Lionel P. Fatton is Assistant Professor of International Relations at Webster University Geneva, Switzerland, and Research Collaborator at the Research Institute for the History of Global Arms Transfer, Meiji University, Japan.

Abstract: This book enables readers to develop a multidisciplinary understanding of natural, human-made, and coupled human-natural systems. The authors explore the structure, function, and dynamic mechanisms of various systems, both natural and human-made, as well as analyze their reciprocal interactions under the concept of “coupled human-natural systems.” The chapters challenge traditional planning and management assumptions and strategies for natural resources, human-altered systems, and the environment. Acknowledging the critical role of effective regulations, policies, and governance structures, the authors analyze advanced research and practices on policy design for managing natural, human-made, and coupled human-natural systems. They conduct impact evaluation and integrative ecosystems assessment, as well as discuss policy interventions and decision-making strategies. They acknowledge the localization of policy design, considering regional and global dynamics that shape responses of local human-made and coupled human-natural systems. A special collection of chapters analyzes legal foundations for sustainable development and strong institution. The authors explore models from both natural and social sciences to obtain and present significant research results. The book is a dispensable source of sustainability research and practice in human-made, natural, and coupled human-natural systems. It is for the scholars, practitioners, and advanced graduate students interested in systems theories, methodologies, and applications.

Abstract: This book explains the basic concepts, theory and applications of fuzzy systems in control in a simple unified approach with clear ex-amples and simulations in the MATLAB programming language. Fuzzy systems, especially, type-2 neuro-fuzzy systems, are now used extensively in various engineering fields for different purposes. In plain language, this book aims to practically explain fuzzy sys-tems and different methods of training and optimizing these systems. For this purpose, type-2 neuro-fuzzy systems are first analyzed along with various methods of training and optimizing these systems through implementation in MATLAB. These systems are then em-ployed to design adaptive fuzzy controllers. The authors aim at pre-senting all the well-known optimization methods clearly and code them in the MATLAB language.

Abstract: Understanding Risk -- Standard Risk Metrics -- Risk in Digital Assets -- Networks of Risk -- Analyzing Rare Risks -- Humans in the Network.
Abstract: This book presents a foray into the fascinating process of risk management, beginning from classical methods and approaches to understanding risk all the way into cutting-age thinking. Risk management by necessity must lie at the heart of governing our ever more complex digital societies. New phenomena and activities necessitate a new look at how individuals, firms, and states manage the uncertainty they must operate in. Initial chapters provide an introduction to traditional methods and show how they can be built upon to better understand the workings of the modern economy. Later chapters review digital activities and assets like cryptocurrencies showing how such emergent risks can be conceptualized better. Network theory figures prominently and the book demonstrates how it can be used to gauge the risk in the digital sectors of the economy. Predicting the unpredictable black swan events is also discussed in view of a wider adoption of economic simulations. The journey concludes by looking at how individuals perceive risk and make decisions as they operate in a virtual social network. This book interests the academic audience, but it also features insights and novel research results that are relevant for practitioners and policymakers. .

Abstract: This book shows, on numerous examples, how to make decisions in realistic situations when we have both uncertainty and constraints. In most these situations, the book's emphasis is on the why-question, i.e., on a theoretical explanation for empirical formulas and techniques. Such explanations are important: they help understand why these techniques work well in some cases and not so well in others, and thus, help practitioners decide whether a technique is appropriate for a given situation. Example of applications described in the book ranges from science (biosciences, geosciences, and physics) to electrical and civil engineering, education, psychology and decision making, and religion—and, of course, include computer science, AI (in particular, eXplainable AI), and machine learning. The book can be recommended to researchers and students in these application areas. Many of the examples use general techniques that can be used in other application areas as well, so it is also useful for practitioners and researchers in other areas who are looking for possible theoretical explanations of empirical formulas and techniques.

Abstract: In the Eighth Edition of this classic text on the financial history of bubbles and crashes, Robert McCauley joins with Robert Aliber in building on Charles Kindleberger's renowned work. McCauley draws on his central banking experience to introduce new chapters on cryptocurrency and the United States as the 21st Century global lender of last resort. He also updates the book's coverage of the recent property bubble in China, as well as providing new perspectives on the US housing bubble of 2003-2006, and the Japanese bubble of the late 1980s. And he gives new attention to the social psychology that leads people to take the risk of investing in Ponzi schemes and asset price bubbles. For the first time in this revised and updated edition, figures highlight key points to ensure that today’s generation of finance and economic researchers, students, practitioners and policy-makers—as well as investors looking to avoid crashes—have access to this panoramic history of financial crisis.

Abstract: Introduction -- Modeling -- Tracking and interaction control -- Wind estimation -- Force discrimination -- Applications and outlook -- Conclusion.
Abstract: This book addresses the topic of autonomous flying robots physically interacting with the environment under the influence of wind. It aims to make aerial robots aware of the disturbance, interaction, and faults acting on them. This requires reasoning about the external wrench (force and torque) acting on the robot and distinguishing between wind, interactions, and collisions. The book takes a model-based approach and covers a systematic approach to parameter identification for flying robots. The book aims to provide a wind speed estimate independent of the external wrench, including estimating the wind speed using motor power measurements. Aerodynamics modeling is approached in a data-driven fashion, using ground-truth measurements from a 4D wind tunnel. Finally, the book bridges the gap between trajectory tracking and interaction control, to allow physical interaction under wind influence. Theoretical results are accompanied by extensive simulation and experimental results.

Abstract: This book presents social welfare functions as a unified multidisciplinary framework for various resource allocation problems. By measuring the impact of local decisions on broader society, social welfare functions enable “socialized” decisions and thereby produce an emergent property that “global” balance and welfare emerge from “local” welfare-maximizing behaviors. Social welfare functions are originally used in economics to quantify income welfare, jointly considering average and inequality to arrive at better measures of welfare than average alone. Wishing the readers to find opportunities for their problems of interest, this book introduces research results of social welfare functions applied in five different engineering applications, defining welfare metrics pertaining to the characteristics of the application. The “energy welfare” in wireless sensor network measures richness of distributed sensors in energy. The “preparedness welfare” in emergency medical services quantifies the preparedness level of an entire service area by aggregating preparedness levels of individual zones. The “preference welfare” in intelligent shared environments represents the opinions of real people for groups. The “resource welfare” in multi-robot task allocation quantifies the efficiency of utilizing distributed resources across robots. The “utility welfare” in complex cyber-physical systems quantifies the impact of local resource sharing decisions on the broader task communities.

Abstract: “By showing the reader how the moral crises of earlier centuries can impact on our understanding of contemporary society Hamerton has revitalised the complex concept of moral panic. Stan Cohen would have been impressed.” — Professor Dick Hobbs, University of Essex, UK “This is a rare book, one which combines the skilful evaluation of complex theory and rigorous historical research in a sophisticated but accessible form. A stimulating, thought-provoking, and highly recommended read.” — Professor Julia Davidson, OBE, University of East London, UK “A very timely and much needed contribution, shedding fresh light on Stanley Cohen’s ‘moral panic’ theory. This book should be widely read across the social sciences and humanities. It will be on my students’ reading lists, and should be marked for inclusion on many others.” — Dr Mark Ramsden, University of Cambridge, UK Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere draws on criminology and social theory to explore and expand social historical themes in the analysis of perceptions of deviance and crime in the eighteenth century. Developing the theoretical device of Folk Devils and Moral Panics, instigated by Stanley Cohen and developed by Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda, the book explores the social discovery of, and public response to, crime and deviance in that period. Detailed contemporary case studies of youth violence, sexual deviance, and substance abuse are used to argue that Hanoverian London and its novel media can be identified as the initiating historical site for what might now be termed public order moral panics. In doing so, Hamerton provides a vivid historical lineage of moral panic which traverses much of the long eighteenth century. The book considers social change, allowing for points of theoretical convergence and divergence to be observed, whilst exploring historical models of public opinion, media, deviance and crime alongside the unique character and power located within the burgeoning Metropolis. Devilry, Deviance, and Public Sphere seeks to make an important contribution to the understanding of both moral panic theory and the historiography of crime and deviance, and posits that the current discourse on folk devils and moral panics can be extended and enriched via the exploration of the moral crises of earlier centuries. Christopher Hamerton is Deputy Director of the Institute of Criminal Justice Research in the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

Abstract: Introduction -- Kinematic Models -- Dynamic Models -- Motion Control -- Control of multi-robot systems -- Index.
Abstract: The focus of this book is kinematic and dynamic control of a single mobile robot or a group of them. New simple and integrated solutions are presented for tasks of positioning, trajectory tracking and path following. Control of Ground and Aerial Robots synthesizes new results on control of mobile robots developed by M.Sc. and Ph.D. students supervised by the authors. The robots considered are wheeled mobile platforms, with emphasis on differential drive vehicles, and the multirotor aerial robots. Integrated control solutions based on the technique of feedback linearization are proposed to guide either a single robot or a homogeneous/heterogeneous group of mobile robots. Examples on the use of the proposed controllers are also provided. Finally, Control of Ground and Aerial Robots is intended to help graduate and advanced undergraduate students in engineering, as well as researchers in the area of robot control, to design controllers to autonomously guide the more common mobile platforms.

Abstract: We are starting to enter a post-COVID-19 life. While this pandemic has made everyone’s life challenging, it also expedited the transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “The New Normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have consensus about what it is and what it should be like. However, one thing that is clear namely that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing a critical role in this transition phase of our everyday lives. We saw the emergence of last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses, and AI-based online education programs. This book is an edition that aims at serving researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress in the areas of robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at Griffith University in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The conference was held in a hybrid format on December 7–9, 2022, with the main theme “Artificial, Agile, Acute Robot Intelligence.” For better readability, the total of 41 papers are grouped into five chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Vision and Image Processing; Chapter III: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Autonomous Vehicles; Chapter IV: Learning and Classification; and Chapter V: Environmental and Societal Robotic Applications. The articles were accepted through a rigorous peer-review process and presented at the RiTA 2022 conference. Also, they were updated, and final versions of the manuscripts were produced after in-depth discussions during the conference. We would like to thank all the authors and editors for contributing to this edition.

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive overview of marine control system design related to underwater robotics applications. In particular, it presents novel optimization-based model predictive control strategies to solve control problems appearing in autonomous underwater vehicle applications. These novel approaches bring unique features, such as constraint handling, prioritization between multiple design objectives, optimal control performance, and robustness against disturbances and uncertainties, into the control system design. They therefore form a more general framework to design marine control systems and can be widely applied. Advanced Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Marine Vehicles balances theoretical rigor – providing thorough analysis and developing provably-correct design conditions – and application perspectives – addressing practical system constraints and implementation issues. Starting with a fixed-point positioning problem for a single vehicle and progressing to the trajectory-tracking and path-following problem of the vehicle, and then to the coordination control of a large-scale multi-robot team, this book addresses the motion control problems, increasing their level of challenge step-by-step. At each step, related subproblems such as path planning, thrust allocation, collision avoidance, and time constraints for real-time implementation are also discussed with solutions. In each chapter of this book, compact and illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the design and implementation procedures. As a result, this book is useful for both theoretical study and practical engineering design, and the tools provided in the book are readily applicable for real-world implementation.

Abstract: This book provides robust analysis and synthesis tools for Markovian jump systems in the finite-time domain with specified performances. It explores how these tools can make the systems more applicable to fields such as economic systems, ecological systems and solar thermal central receivers, by limiting system trajectories in the desired bound in a given time interval. Robust Control for Discrete-Time Markovian Jump Systems in the Finite-Time Domain focuses on multiple aspects of finite-time stability and control, including: finite-time H-infinity control; finite-time sliding mode control; finite-time multi-frequency control; finite-time model predictive control; and high-order moment finite-time control for multi-mode systems and also provides many methods and algorithms to solve problems related to Markovian jump systems with simulation examples that illustrate the design procedure and confirm the results of the methods proposed. The thorough discussion of these topics makes the book a useful guide for researchers, industrial engineers and graduate students alike, enabling them systematically to establish the modeling, analysis and synthesis for Markovian jump systems in the finite-time domain.

Abstract: Why AI does not include gender in its agenda? The role of gender in AI, both as part of the community of agents creating such technologies, as well as part of the contents processed by such technologies is, by far, conflictive. Women have been, again, obliterated by this fundamental revolution of our century. Highly innovative and the first step in a series of future studies in this field, this book covers several voices, topics, and perspectives that allow the reader to understand the necessity to include into the AI research agenda such points of view and also to attract more women to this field. The multi-disciplinarity of the contributors, which uses plain language to show the current situation in this field, is a fundamental aspect of the value of this book. Any reader with a genuine interest in the present and future of AI should read it.

Abstract: “This book is an excellent and highly welcome contribution to the history of the work ethic, as it reveals both surprising continuities and profound historical variations in the long-term assessment of work.” —Josef Ehmer, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Vienna, Austria “These masterful essays recover a multi-faceted discourse of work in European thought cutting across genres, confessions, geo-political borders, and occupational groups. Among this volume’s many points of interest, the early forms of workaholism traced here have profound contemporary relevance.” — Sarah Gwyneth Ross, Professor of History, Boston College, USA This book investigates how work ethics in Europe were conceptualised from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. Through analysis of a range of discourses, it focuses on the roles played by intellectuals in formulating, communicating, and contesting ideas about work and its ethical value. The book moves away from the idea of a singular Weberian work ethic as fundamental to modern notions of work and instead emphasises how different languages of work were harnessed for a variety of social, intellectual, religious, economic, political, and ideological objectives. Rather than a singular work ethic that left a decisive mark on the development of Western culture and economy, the volume stresses plurality. The essays draw on approaches from intellectual, social, and cultural history. They explore how, why, and in what contexts labour became an important and openly promoted value; who promoted or opposed hard work and for what reasons; and whether there was an early modern break with ancient and medieval discourses on work. These historicized visions of work ethics help enrich our understanding of present-day changing attitudes to work. Giorgio Lizzul is Post-doctoral Junior Fellow at the Fondazione 1563, Turin, and Visiting Scholar at the Università di Torino, Italy.

Abstract: This book presents the recent research advances in linear and nonlinear control techniques. From both a theoretical and practical standpoint, motion planning and related control challenges are key parts of robotics. Indeed, the literature on the planning of geometric paths and the generation of time-based trajectories, while accounting for the compatibility of such paths and trajectories with the kinematic and dynamic constraints of a manipulator or a mobile vehicle, is extensive and rich in historical references. Path planning is vital and critical for many different types of robotics, including autonomous vehicles, multiple robots, and robot arms. In the case of multiple robot route planning, it is critical to produce a safe path that avoids colliding with objects or other robots. When designing a safe path for an aerial or underwater robot, the 3D environment must be considered. As the number of degrees of freedom on a robot arm increases, so does the difficulty of path planning. As a result, safe pathways for high-dimensional systems must be developed in a timely manner. Nonetheless, modern robotic applications, particularly those requiring one or more robots to operate in a dynamic environment (e.g., human–robot collaboration and physical interaction, surveillance, or exploration of unknown spaces with mobile agents, etc.), pose new and exciting challenges to researchers and practitioners. For instance, planning a robot's motion in a dynamic environment necessitates the real-time and online execution of difficult computational operations. The development of efficient solutions for such real-time computations, which could be offered by specially designed computational architectures, optimized algorithms, and other unique contributions, is thus a critical step in the advancement of present and future-oriented robotics. .

Abstract: This book reflects the latest developments in sliding-mode control (SMC) and variable-structure systems (VSS), comprising contributions by leading researchers and an international range of experts. Such contributions highlight advances in various branches of the field—conventional and higher-order SMC with continuous- and discrete-time implementation and theory and applications both receive attention. The book consists of six parts. In the first, new SMC/VSS algorithms are proposed and their properties are analyzed. The second part focuses on the use of observers to solve the estimation and output-feedback control problems. The third part discusses the discretization aspects of SMC algorithms. Parts IV and V provide important insights on the use of adaptation laws for non-overestimated control gains and chattering alleviation. The last part examines the applications of these SMC/VSS ideas to real-world systems. Sliding-Mode Control and Variable-Structure Systems introduces postgraduates and researchers to the state of the art in the field. It includes theory, methods, and applications relevant to workers in disciplines including control, automation, applied mathematics, electrical and mechanical engineering, instrumentation, electronics, computer science, robotics, transportation, and power engineering. Its clear style and deep exposition help readers to keep in touch with tools that are, thanks to the robustness and insensitivity to perturbations of the SMC/VSS paradigm, among the most efficient for dealing with uncertain systems.

Abstract: The model-based approach to fault detection and diagnosis has been the subject of continuing research for several decades. While the theoretical aspects of the fault diagnosis relying on linear models are well understood, most of the proposed computational methods for the synthesis of fault detection and isolation filters are not satisfactory from a numerical point of view. Therefore, the aim of this book to address the fault detection and isolation topics from a computational perspective, contrasts with most existing literature. This book is an attempt to close the gap between the existing well developed theoretical results and the realm of reliable computational synthesis procedures. Several features make this book unique in the fault detection literature: · solution of standard synthesis problems in the most general setting, for both continuous- and discrete-time systems, regardless they are proper or not; consequently, the proposed synthesis procedures can solve a specific problem whenever a solution exists · emphasis on the best numerical algorithms to solve the synthesis problems for linear systems in generalized state-space form (also known as descriptor systems). · development of general synthesis procedures relying on new computational paradigms, as factorization-based design based on filter updating techniques and nullspace-based synthesis · availability of a comprehensive set of free supporting software tools implemented in the Julia language, which ensures the reproducibility of the results of all presented synthesis examples. This book is primarily aimed at researchers and advanced graduate students in the areas of fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control. It will also appeal to mathematicians with interests in control oriented numerics.

Abstract: Key Messages of the Book -- Outline of the Book -- Notations and Basic Concepts -- Discretization via Random and Rectangular Grids Leading to Bi-Linear Approximations -- TP Grid Structure of Functions -- TP Model Transformation -- TS Fuzzy Model Transformation.
Abstract: The TP and TS Fuzzy model transformation based control design has revolutionized the field of control design by introducing a highly effective approach. Through the TP model transformation, it has become evident that the design of controllers and observers, as well as the effectiveness of applied LMIs, are greatly influenced by the shape of the antecedent Fuzzy sets and the number and location of the consequent systems. Furthermore, the TP model transformation has revealed that the sensitivity of controller and observer design differs in nature. This implies that the overseer and controller design require different TS Fuzzy model representations of the system at hand. This book offers a comprehensive exploration of this phenomenon. The book introduces several new theoretical advancements in the TP or TS Fuzzy model transformation based control design framework. It presents a complete framework for TP and TS Fuzzy model transformation and offers various tools based on this approach to enhance control design effectiveness. The book introduces novel theoretical concepts, such as interpolation between alternative TS Fuzzy model representations, which leads to a new optimization framework. It also explores methods to achieve further complexity reduction beyond rank minimization. Additionally, the book addresses the execution of TS Fuzzy model transformation for large-sized problems and demonstrates how to reinforce various properties of antecedent Fuzzy sets through manipulation. Practical hints and guidance for control design is provided throughout the book, with examples illustrating the application of novel solutions. Matlab codes are also included to facilitate the implementation of the proposed methods.

Abstract: This is a major new work by internationally renowned editors and cutting edge contributors. The Handbook pulls off the difficult feat of simultaneously canonizing and de-parochializing International Political Theory, by extending its historical genealogy as well as its regional and thematic reach. The results are presented in accessible chapters for the student of the new field.“ - Peter Niesen, Professor of Political Theory, University of Hamburg, Germany “As the world confronts new challenges like pandemics and climate change, academic political theory has struggled to keep pace with events. Increasingly, our thinking must become international in scope. Focusing on themes from realism, sovereignty, and the nation-state to post-colonialism, gender, and indigeneity, these volumes attempt to bring political theory into the twenty-first century. The editors have brought together an impressive cast of contributors each of whom adds a distinctive voice to this chorus. This collection will provide an invaluable resource for scholars and students pondering the problems not only of today or tomorrow but of the future.” - Steven B. Smith, Alfred Cowles Professor of Political Science, Yale University, USA This handbook provides an exploration of the field of International Political Theory (IPT), which in its broadest terms, examines the ways in which ideas about justice, sovereignty, and legitimacy shape international politics. It is a comprehensive resource for those interested in understanding the philosophical, political, and legal issues that arise from interactions between states, peoples, and global actors. The two volumes of the handbook cover a wide range of topics, from the foundations of international political thought to the latest debates in the field. They are designed to give readers a comprehensive overview of the key concepts and arguments within international political theory and provide an introduction to the main debates in the field.Volume 1 takes us from the ancient world to the formation of the modern state system as we lay the groundwork for a critical understanding of changes in, and challenges to, core ideas such as sovereignty, international law and territorial integrity. The contributions to this volume explore the European domination of the discipline providing insights into how it came to conceive the world in its own image. They also focus on non-Western perspectives and reactions to European hegemony. Howard Williams is Distinguished Honorary Professor in the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University, and Emeritus Professor of Political Theory in the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, UK. David Boucher is Professor of Political Philosophy and International Relations at the University of Cardiff, UK, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Johannesburg (2015-25), South Africa. Peter Sutch is Professor of Political and International Theory at Cardiff University, UK. He is also Visiting Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Abstract: Analysis and Design of Control Laws for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) teaches students how to solve classical problems in automotive control in a step-by-step fashion. It begins by motivating the use of ADAS and then explains different ADAS models and the goals of their control systems. Systems analysis and control architectures are presented, followed by a treatment of the use of optimal control and the Kalman filter. The author then presents more advanced control techniques and gives an overview of control problems involved in fully autonomous, hybrid and electric vehicles. Each chapter contains a specific discussion of its subject in terms of various ADAS functionalities, such as active suspension, power steering, lane control and automated parking. The text is developed by extensive use of worked examples, related to the applications discussed. Appendices, including necessary aspects of linear algebra and the use of MATLAB render the text self-contained. MATLAB files are provided to help both student and instructor model and analyse the systems being discussed. An electronic solutions manual is freely available for download by instructors adopting the book for their classroom teaching. This textbook will help final-year undergraduate and graduate students to understand the practical issues they will face when working on automotive systems in the real world and the theoretical underpinnings they will need to get to grips with the control systems of present and future generations of cars and other automotive transport. A basic grounding in mathematics and physics is all that is required to get the most from this text.

Abstract: This book analyses the historical sociology of state formation in the Horn of Africa. It examines the genesis, trajectories, processes, routes and consequences of the evolution of state formation. Three analytical and explanatory models explain the process of state formation in the HOA: proto-state, colonial and national liberation. The models, heuristically and innovatively, provide understanding, interpretation and analysis of state formation. While the proto-state model explicates an indigenous historical process of state formation, the colonial model refers to an externally designed and imposed process of state formation. The national liberation model concern state formation conducted under liberation movement and ideology. The distinct significance of these models is that collectively they generate sufficient analysis of state formation. They are also unique in that they have never been employed as aggregate analytical and explicative instruments to address the predicament of state formation in the Horn of Africa. Redie Bereketeab is Associate Professor of Sociology and Senior Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute at Uppsala University, Sweden. His latest publications include: National Liberation Movements as Government in Africa (2019), and Alternatives to Neoliberal Peacebuilding and Statebuilding in Africa (2021). His research interest include political sociology, development sociology, African studies, conflict, peacebuilding, regional integration.

Abstract: This handbook brings together diverse domains and technical competences of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) into a single, comprehensive publication. It is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students/educators who require a wide-ranging and authoritative reference on MBSE with a multidisciplinary, global perspective. It is also meant for those who want to develop a sound understanding of the practice of systems engineering and MBSE, and/or who wish to teach both introductory and advanced graduate courses in systems engineering. It is specifically focused on individuals who want to understand what MBSE is, the deficiencies in current practice that MBSE overcomes, where and how it has been successfully applied, its benefits and payoffs, and how it is being deployed in different industries and across multiple applications. MBSE engineering practitioners and educators with expertise in different domains have contributed chapters that address various uses of MBSE and related technologies such as simulation and digital twin in the systems lifecycle. The introductory chapter reviews the current state of practice, discusses the genesis of MBSE and makes the business case. Subsequent chapters present the role of ontologies and meta-models in capturing system interdependencies, reasoning about system behavior with design and operational constraints; the use of formal modeling in system (model) verification and validation; ontology-enabled integration of systems and system-of-systems; digital twin-enabled model-based testing; system model design synthesis; model-based tradespace exploration; design for reuse; human-system integration; and role of simulation and Internet-of-Things (IoT) within MBSE. .

Abstract: This book explores continuity and ruptures in the historical use of visual representations in science and related disciplines such as art history and anthropology. The book also considers more recent developments that attest to the unprecedented importance of scientific visualizations, such as video recordings, animations, simulations, graphs, and enhanced realities. The volume collects historical reflections concerned with the use of visual material, visualization, and vision in science from a historical perspective, ranging across multiple cultures from antiquity until present day. The focus is on visual representations such as drawings, prints, tables, mathematical symbols, photos, data visualizations, mapping processes, and (on a meta-level) visualizations of data extracted from historical sources to visually support the historical research itself. Continuity and ruptures between the past and present use of visual material are presented against the backdrop of the epistemic functions of visual material in science. The function of visual material is defined according to three major epistemic categories: exploration, transformation, and transmission of knowledge.

Abstract: This open access handbook takes a comparative and global approach to analyse the practice of slavery throughout history. In order to understand slavery - why it developed, and how it functioned in various societies – is to understand an important and widespread practice in world civilisations. With research traditionally being dominated by the Atlantic world, this collection aims to illuminate slavery that existed in not only the Americas but also ancient, medieval, North and sub-Saharan African, Near Eastern, and Asian societies. Connecting civilisations through migration, warfare, trade routes and economic expansion, the practice of slavery integrated countries and regions through power-based relationships, whilst simultaneously dividing societies by class, race, ethnicity and cultural group. Uncovering slavery as a globalizing phenomenon, the authors highlight the slave-trading routes that crisscrossed Africa, helped integrate the Mediterranean world, connected Indian Ocean societies and fused the Atlantic world. Split into five parts, the handbook portrays the evolution of slavery from antiquity to the contemporary era and encourages readers to realise similarities and differences between various manifestations of slavery throughout history. Providing a truly global coverage of slavery, and including thematic injections within each chronological part, this handbook is a comprehensive and transnational resource for all researchers interested in slavery, the history of labour, and anthropology. Damian A. Pargas is Professor of North American History and Culture at Leiden University as well as Director of the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in The Netherlands. Juliane Schiel is Associate Professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna in Austria.

Abstract: A graduate-level textbook, Hybrid Dynamical Systems provides an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the theory of hybrid systems. It emphasizes results that are central to a good understanding of the importance and role of such systems. The authors have developed the materials in this book while teaching courses on hybrid systems, cyber-physical systems, and formal methods. This textbook helps students to become familiar with both the major approaches coloring the study of hybrid dynamical systems. The computer science and control systems points of view – emphasizing discrete dynamics and real time, and continuous dynamics with switching, respectively – are each covered in detail. The book shows how the behavior of a system with tightly coupled cyber- (discrete) and physical (continuous) elements can best be understood by a model simultaneously encompassing all the dynamics and their interconnections. The theory presented is of fundamental importance in a wide range of emerging fields from next-generation transportation systems to smart manufacturing. Features of the text include: extensive use of examples to illustrate the main concepts and to provide insights additional to those acquired from the main text; chapter summaries enabling students to assess their progress; end-of-chapter exercises, which test learning as a course proceeds; an instructor’s guide showing how different parts of the book can be exploited for different course requirements; and a solutions manual, freely available for download by instructors adopting the book for their teaching. Access to MATLAB and Stateflow is not required but would be beneficial, especially for exercises in which simulations are a key tool.

Abstract: This book, published in honor of Professor Laurent Praly on the occasion of his 65th birthday, explores the responses of some leading international authorities to new challenges in nonlinear and adaptive control. The mitigation of the effects of uncertainty and nonlinearity – ubiquitous features of real-world engineering and natural systems – on closed-loop stability and robustness being of crucial importance, the contributions report the latest research into overcoming these difficulties in: autonomous systems; reset control systems; multiple-input–multiple-output nonlinear systems; input delays; partial differential equations; population games; and data-driven control. Trends in Nonlinear and Adaptive Control presents research inspired by and related to Professor Praly’s lifetime of contributions to control theory and is a valuable addition to the literature of advanced control.

It is written in a light but informative narrative style, and includes many figures and MATLAB examples. The book starts with the fundamentals of pose representation and time varying pose. For mobile robotics it covers vehicle motion models, control, path planning, localization and mapping. For robot manipulators it covers forward, inverse and differential kinematics, and dynamics. The Robotics Toolbox for MATLAB is free and open software that enables the reader to easily bring the algorithmic concepts into practice and work with real, non-trivial, problems. For the beginning student the book makes the algorithms accessible, the Toolbox code can be read to gain understanding, and the examples illustrate how it can be used. The code can also be the starting point for new work, for researchers or students, by writing programs based on Toolbox functions, or modifying the Toolbox code itself.

Cooperation vs. Competition in a World of Adversarial Power Centers -- Index.
Abstract: History teaches us important lessons, provided we can discern its patterns. Multi-Polar Capitalism applies this insight to the crucial, yet often underappreciated issue of international monetary relations. When international monetary systems get first put into place successfully, such as the “classic” gold standard in 1879, Bretton Woods in 1945, or the dollar standard in 1982, they structure relations between the system’s centre and the rest of the world so that others can catch up to the leader. But this growth-promoting constellation, a vector for accelerating globalization, runs its course eventually amidst mounting overproduction conditions in key sectors and spreading financial instability. Such periods of global crisis, from the Great Depression of the 1930s to stagflation in the 1970s and creeping deflation during much of the 2010s, force restructuring and policy reforms until conditions are ripe for a renewed phase of sustained expansion. We are facing such a turning point now. As we are moving from a US-dominated world economy towards a multi-polar configuration, we will also see the longstanding dollar standard give way to a multi-currency system. Three currency blocs rooted in the dollar, euro, and yuan will be dominated respectively by the United States, the European Union, and China, each a power centre representing a distinct variant of capitalism. Their complex mix of competition and cooperation necessitates new “rules of the game” promoting the shared pursuit of global public goods, in particular the impending zero-carbon transition, lest we allow fragmentation and conflict shape this next chapter of our history. Multi-Polar Capitalism adds to a century of research and debate on long waves, those roughly half-century cycles first identified by the great Soviet economist Nikolai Kondratiev in the early 1920s, by highlighting the role of the international monetary system in this distinct boom-and-bust pattern. Robert Guttmann is Professor of Economics at Hofstra University, USA, and he is also affiliated with the Centre d’Économie Paris Nord (CEPN) of the Université Paris XIII in France. He studied in Vienna and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, before obtaining his PhD at the University of Greenwich, UK. He won “Distinguished Teacher of the Year” awards at Hofstra in 1989, 2004, and 2012. Professor Guttmann teaches international economics, monetary economics, financial regulation, and economic integration in the European Union. An expert in money and banking, international finance, and monetary theory, he has published numerous books and journal articles, including his best-selling books How Credit-Money Shapes the Economy (1994), Cybercash (2003), Finance-Led Capitalism (2016) and Eco-Capitalism (2018).

Abstract: This book presents the state of the art in distributed autonomous systems composed of multiple robots, robotic modules, or robotic agents. Swarms in nature can not only adapt to their environments, but can also construct suitable habitats to their own advantage. Distributed autonomous robotic systems can do many things that its individuals cannot do alone. As the global pandemic was still ongoing, the 15th International Symposium on Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems (DARS2021) was held on June 1–4, 2021, as an online meeting. The scope of DARS201 was to create a bridge between biologists and engineers interested in the distributed intelligence of living things and to establish a new academic field by integrating knowledge from both disciplines. Topics of DARS2021 were swarm intelligence, swarm robotics, multi-agent system, modular robotics, decentralized control, distributed system, etc. The papers in this book provide a very good overview of the state of the art in distributed autonomous robotic systems (DARS). They reflect current research themes in DARS with important contributions. We hope that this book helps to sustain the interest in DARS and triggers new research. .

Abstract: This book offers a timely overview of nonlinear control methods applied to a set of vehicles and their applications to study vehicle dynamics. The first part on the book presents the mathematical models used for describing motion of three class of vehicles such as underwater vehicles, hovercrafts and airships. In turn, each model is expressed in terms of Inertial Quasi-Velocities. Various control strategies from the literature, including model-free ones, are then analyzed. The second part and core of the book guides readers to developing model-based control algorithms using Inertial Quasi-Velocities. Both non-adaptive and adaptive versions are covered. Each controller is validated through simulation tests, which are reported in detail. In turn, this part shows how to use the controllers to gain information about vehicle dynamics, thus describing an important relationship between the dynamics of the moving object and its motion control. The effects of mechanical couplings between variables describing vehicle motion due to inertial forces are also discussed. All in all, this book offers a timely guide and extensive information on nonlinear control schemes for unmanned marine and aerial vehicles. It covers specifically the simulation tests and is therefore meant as a starting point for engineers and researchers that would like to verify experimentally the suitability of the proposed models in real vehicles. Further, it also supports advanced-level students and educators in their courses on vehicle dynamics, control engineering and robotics.

Abstract: This book collects the main results of the Advanced Grant project RoDyMan funded by the European Research Council. As a final demonstrator of the project, a pizza-maker robot was realized. This represents a perfect example of understanding the robot challenge, considering every inexperienced person's difficulty preparing a pizza. Through RoDyMan, the opportunity was to merge all the acquired competencies in advancing the state of the art in nonprehensile dynamic manipulation, which is the most complex manipulation task, considering deformable objects. This volume is intended to present Ph.D. students and postgraduates working on deformable object perception and robot manipulation control the results achieved within RoDyMan and propose cause for reflection of future developments. The RoDyMan project culminating with this book is meant as a tribute to Naples, the hosting city of the project, an avant-garde city in robotics technology, automation, gastronomy, and art culture.

Abstract: Stabilizing Systems with Uncertain Time Delay via PID Control:How Good Is It -- Stability Analysis of Linear Delay Systems via Internally Positive Representations: an overview -- Control by Set Invariance of a Class of Convolution Systems.
Abstract: Time-delays are fundamental to understand phenomena in control applications as networked systems, traffic management, control of vibrations, and supply chains. The need for a performance and reliability on these systems has to overcome challenges related to the constraints in the controlled systems. These constraints can be physical, such as input magnitude saturation on actuators, or technological, such as the limited bandwidth in a networked system or the fixed structure in a control architecture, where only a few parameters can be set. This volume provides a wide-ranging collection of methods for the analysis and design of control laws for delay systems with constraints. These methods cover fundamental analytical aspects as, for instance, the stability analysis of Positive Delay systems or the achievable performance of PID controls for delay systems. The book gives valuable material for researchers and graduate students in Automatic Control. .

Abstract: This book aims at serving the researchers and practitioners in related fields with a timely dissemination of the recent progress on robotics and artificial intelligence. This book is based on a collection of papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications (RiTA), held at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea, in a hybrid format, on December 16–17, 2021. Humankind is getting through the third year of COVID-19 pandemic. While this pandemic has made everyone’s life so challenging, it has also expedited transition of our everyday lives into a new form, often called “the new normal.” Although many people often use the terminology, perhaps we still do not have a consensus about what it is and what is should be like. One thing that is clear is that robotics and artificial intelligence technologies are playing critical roles in this phase transition of our everyday lives. We see last-mile delivery robots on the street, AI-embedded service robots in the restaurants, uninhabited shops, non-face-to-face medical services, conferences and talks in metaverses and AI-based online education programs. For better readability, the total of 53 papers are grouped into four chapters: Chapter I: Motion Planning and Control; Chapter II: Design and Robot Application; Chapter III: Sensing, Perception and Recognition; and Chapter IV: Cognition, Autonomy and Intelligence. For those who have research on robot intelligence technology, we believe this book will help them understand the recent robot technologies and applications and enhance their study.

Abstract: This book is concerned with the development of the understanding of the relational structures of information, knowledge, decision–choice processes of problems and solutions in the theory and practice regarding diversity and unity principles of knowing, science, non-science, and information–knowledge systems through dualistic-polar conditions of variety existence and nonexistence. It is a continuation of the sequence of my epistemic works on the theories on fuzzy rationality, info-statics, info-dynamics, entropy, and their relational connectivity to information, language, knowing, knowledge, cognitive practices relative to variety identification–problem–solution dualities, variety transformation–problem–solution dualities, and variety certainty–uncertainty principle in all areas of knowing and human actions regarding general social transformations. It is also an economic–theoretic approach in understanding the diversity and unity of knowing and science through neuro-decision–choice actions over the space of problem–solution dualities and polarities. The problem–solution dualities are argued to connect all areas of knowing including science and non-science, social science, and non-social-science into unity with diversities under neuro-decision–choice actions to support human existence and nonexistence over the space of static–dynamic dualities. The concepts of diversity and unity are defined and explicated to connect to the tactics and strategies of decision–choice actions over the space of problem–solution dualities. The concepts of problem and solution are defined and explicated not in the space of absoluteness but rather in the space of relativity based on real cost–benefit conditions which are shown to be connected to the general parent–offspring infinite process, where every solution generates new problem(s) which then generates a search for new solutions within the space of minimum–maximum dualities in the decision–choice space under the principle of non-satiation over the space of preference–non-preference dualities with analytical tools drawn from the fuzzy paradigm of thought which connects the conditions of the principle of opposites to the conditions of neuro-decision–choice actions in the zone of variety identifications and transformations. The Monograph would be useful to all areas of Research, Learning and Teaching at Advanced Stages of Knowing and Knowledge Production.

Abstract: Communication-Protocol-Based Filtering and Control of Networked Systems is a self-contained treatment of the state of the art in communication-protocol-based filtering and control; recent advances in networked systems; and the potential for application in sensor networks. This book provides new concepts, new models and new methodologies with practical significance in control engineering and signal processing. The book first establishes signal-transmission models subject to different communication protocols and then develops new filter design techniques based on those models and preset requirements for filtering performance. The authors then extend this work to finite-horizon H-infinity control, ultimately bounded control and finite-horizon consensus control. The focus throughout is on three typical communications protocols: the round-robin, random-access and try-once-and-discard protocols, and the systems studied are drawn from a variety of classes, among them nonlinear systems, time-delayed and time-varying systems, multi-agent systems and complex networks. Readers are shown the latest techniques—recursive linear matrix inequalities, backward recursive difference equations, stochastic analysis and mapping methods. The unified framework for communication-protocol-based filtering and control for different networked systems established in the book will be of interest to academic researchers and practicing engineers working with communications and other signal-processing systems. Senior undergraduate and graduate students looking to increase their knowledge of current methods in control and signal processing of networked systems will also find this book valuable.

Abstract: This monograph is focused on control law design methods for asymptotic tracking and disturbance rejection in the presence of uncertainties. The methods are based on adaptive implementation of the Internal Model Principle (IMP). The monograph shows how this principle can be applied to the problems of asymptotic rejection/tracking of a priori uncertain exogenous signals for linear and nonlinear plants with known and unknown parameters. The book begins by introducing the problems of adaptive control, the challenges that are faced, modern methods and an overview of the IMP. It then introduces special observers for uncertain exogeneous signals affecting linear and nonlinear systems with known and unknown parameters. The basic algorithms of adaptation applied to the canonical closed-loop error models are presented. The authors then address the systematic design of adaptive systems for asymptotic rejection/tracking of a priori uncertain exosignals. The monograph also discusses the adaptive rejection/tracking of a priori uncertain exogenous signals in systems with input delay, the problems of performance improvement in disturbance rejection and reference tracking and the issue of robustness of closed-loop systems. Adaptive Regulation provides a systematic discussion of the IMP applied to a variety of control problems, making it of interest to researchers and industrial practitioners.

Abstract: This book, dedicated to Professor Georgi M. Dimirovski on his anniversary, contains new research directions, challenges, and many relevant applications related to many aspects within the broadly perceived areas of systems and control, including signal analysis and intelligent systems. The project comprises two volumes with papers written by well known and very active researchers and practitioners. The first volume is focused on more foundational aspects related to general issues in systems science and mathematical systems, various problems in control and automation, and the use of computational and artificial intelligence in the context of systems modeling and control. The second volume is concerned with a presentation of relevant applications, notably in robotics, computer networks, telecommunication, fault detection/diagnosis, as well as in biology and medicine, and economic, financial, and social systems too.

Stowe, VT, September 1961: two contrasting conferences in America -- Chapter 4. The Pugwash leadership: Informal diplomacy beyond the conferences, 1962-1967 -- Chapter 5. Abstract: This book provides new and critical perspectives on the internal development of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (the PCSWA; Pugwash) and its role in international nuclear diplomacy during the 1960s Cold War. Conceived by western scientists dissenting from their own government’s position on nuclear weapons, the conferences brought together elite scientists from across the East-West divide to work towards nuclear disarmament and for peace. The analysis follows two lines. First, the book charts the emergence during the conferences of a distinctive form of technopolitical communication that was crucial to the role of Pugwash in Informal cross-bloc dialogue about disarmament. This enabled Pugwash to realize its paradoxical vision of working both with and against governments to promote disarmament and was key to its role as both a forum for and actor within the realm of informal diplomacy. It is argued that Pugwash scientists formed the vanguard of what came in the 1960s to be called Track II diplomacy. The relevance of the contemporary concept of Science Diplomacy for Pugwash is discussed. The second analytical focus of the book centers on the internal dynamics of the international Pugwash organization. It is argued that informal modes of working and a code of confidentiality accorded the leadership enormous power and autonomy: this small network of senior figures was able to control the Pugwash agenda and priorities, and to launch diplomatic initiatives beyond the conferences. However, by 1967, competing interests were fueling tensions and instability within Pugwash as it struggled for coherence and direction amid with the political challenges posed by the Vietnam War and European security. This crisis manifest the limits of the Pugwash project and placed its future in doubt.
