Kurzfassung: This volume presents for the first time a collection of historically important papers written on the concept of rationality in the social sciences. In 1939-40, the famed Austrian economist Joseph A. Schumpeter and the famous sociologist Talcott Parsons convened a faculty seminar at Harvard University on the topic of rationality. The first part includes their essays as well as papers by the Austrian phenomenologist Alfred Schütz, the sociologist Wilbert Moore, and the economist Rainer Schickele. Several younger economists and sociologists with bright futures also participated, including Alex Gerschenkron, John Dunlop, Paul M. Sweezy, and Wassily W. Leontief, who was later awarded the Nobel Prize for developing input-output analysis. The second part presents essays and commentaries written by today’s internationally noted social scientists and addressing the topic of rationality in social action from a broad range of perspectives. The book’s third and final part shares the recently discovered correspondence between the seminar principals regarding the original but failed plan to publish its proceedings. It also includes letters, not previously published, between Richard Grathoff, Walter M. Sprondel and Talcott Parsons on the rationality seminar and the exchanges between Parsons and Schütz

Kurzfassung: Jan Brülle shows how poverty risks in Germany between 1992 and 2012 increased concentrated on those with low educational levels, in lower occupational positions, and with precarious employment careers, as the country’s welfare state failed to adapt to widening inequalities in households’ market incomes. Contrasting the German experience with Great Britain, where social transfers to low-income families in concert with favourable labour market conditions helped to reduce poverty between 1992 and the global financial crisis, he presents the most comprehensive comparative study on poverty trends in these two countries to date. Moving beyond a cross-sectional perspective on poverty, the author analyses why it became not only more frequent in Germany, but also more persistent in individual life-courses, and why faster exits have driven the decline in poverty in Great Britain. Contents Concepts and Explanations of Poverty The Changing Structure of Poverty Risks Labour Market Risks, Households, Social Security The Dynamics of Relative Income Poverty Income Poverty and Material Deprivation Target Groups Lecturers and students of sociology, social policy, economics Practitioners working in social policy The Author Dr. Jan Brülle is a researcher at Goethe-University Frankfurt. His research focuses on the interrelations of labour markets, families and social policy and their impact on poverty and social inequality

Kurzfassung: This important text explores the deep relationships between poverty, health/mental health conditions, and widespread social problems as they affect the lives of low-income women. A robust source of both empirical findings and first-person descriptions by poor women of their living conditions, it exposes cyclical patterns of structural and environmental stressors contributing to impaired physical and mental health. Psychological conditions (notably depression and PTSD), substance use and abuse, domestic and gun-related violence, relationship instability, and hunger in low-income communities, especially among women of color, are discussed in detail. In terms of solutions, the book’s contributors identify areas for major policy reform and make potent recommendations for community outreach, wide-scale intervention, and sustained advocacy. Among the topics covered: • The intersection of women’s health and poverty. • Poverty, personal experiences of violence, and mental health. • The role of social support for women living in poverty. • The logic of exchange sex among women living in poverty. • Physical safety and neighborhood issues. • Exploring the complex intersections between housing environments and health behaviors among women living in poverty. A stark reminder that health should be considered a basic human right, Poverty in the United States: Women's Voices is a necessary reference for research professionals particularly interested in women’s studies, HIV/AIDS prevention, poverty, and social policy

Kurzfassung: This volume presents the critical perspectives of feminists, critical race theorists, and queer and postcolonial theorists who question the adoption of European norms in the postcolonial world and whether such norms are enabling for disenfranchised communities or if they simply reinforce relations of domination and exploitation. It examines how postcolonial interventions alter the study of politics and society both in the postcolony and in Euro-America, as well as of the power relations between them. Challenging conventional understandings of international politics, this volume pushes the boundaries of the social sciences by engaging with alternative critical approaches and innovatively and provocatively addressing previously disregarded aspects of international politics. The fourteen contributions in this volume focus on the silencing and exclusion of vulnerable groups from claims of freedom, equality and rights, while highlighting postcolonial-queer-feminist struggles for transnational justice, radical democracy and decolonization, drawing on in-depth empirically-informed analyses of processes and struggles in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. They address political and social topics including global governance and development politics; neo-colonialism, international aid and empire; resistance, decolonization and the Arab Spring; civil society and social movement struggles; international law, democratization and subalternity; body politics and green imperialism. By drawing on other disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, this book both enriches and expands the discipline of political science and international relations. Primary readership for this volume will be academics and students concerned with globalization studies, postcolonial theory, gender studies, and international relations, as well as political activists and policy-makers concerned with social and transnational justice, human rights, democracy, gender justice and women’s rights

Kurzfassung: This book is focussing on the results of the mobil.LAB Doctoral Research Group “Sustainable mobility in the metropolitan region of Munich” for its first phase. It highlights the key findings of young scientists from diverse disciplines on selected issues of sustainable mobility, such as neighbourhood mobility, sustainable modes, regional governance and spatial aspects. This includes insights of methods used to assess sustainable mobility, the way how to study and how to conceptualize sustainable development in each of the contributions. Each chapter is built on case studies in cooperation with practice partners and based on empirical data in the metropolitan region of Munich. Moreover, a common understanding of sustainable mobility in metropolitan regions and future research perspectives on mobility cultures are developed. In consequence, the knowledge and experiences are shared in order to generate strategies and actions to address, promote and support sustainable mobility in metropolitan regions. Kurzfassung: Nora E. Sánchez Gassen analyses how demographic trends and electoral law have influenced the German electorate in the past and projects their future impact. A set of population projections illustrates how the size and age structure of the electorate will change until 2030 due to ongoing demographic changes. Additional analyses reveal how reforms of electoral law and citizenship law could be used to influence these trends. Overall, the author combines demographic methods with democratic theory in order to investigate a topic that has so far received little attention in discussions on demographic change: the future of the democratic system. Contents The influence of legal and demographic changes on the development of the electorate Demographic projections: The influence of demographic trends on the development of the electorate Policy scenarios: The influence of legal changes on the development of the electorate The development of the German electorate: Trends and consequences Target Groups Political Scientists (areas of study: democratic theory, political systems and institutions, electoral studies) and Demographers (areas of study: population projections, population ageing, migration/integration) Persons working in ministries, parties and public administration, interest groups (migrant organisations, foundations and institutions who are interested in the rights of future generations) The Author Nora E. Kurzfassung: This book demonstrates both successes and failures in attempts to get closer to the ideal of good urban governance in cities in North-America, Europe, and Asia. It presents a value menu and deliberately does not come up with “one best way” for improving urban governance. Good urban governance is presented as a balancing act, an interplay between government, business and civil society in which the core values need careful and timely attention. The authors address questions such as “What is deemed “good” in urban governance, and how is it being searched for?”, and “What (re)configurations of interactions between government, private sector and civil society are evolving, and to what results?”. Contents Reflections on Good Governance Designing Good Urban Governance Partnerships in European, Indian and Chinese Cities Multi-level Governance Citizen Participation Target Groups Lecturers and Students of Sociology, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, Development Studies Practitioners in Cities all over the World The Authors Leon van den Dool is Senior Researcher at Tilburg University and Senior Manager at PwC Advisory in the field of Local Government, the Netherlands.
