    Abstract: "A Woman's Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia's "civilizing" and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general's wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others. They make clear the perspectives of the ruling class and outline the special role of women as describers and recorders of information about local women, and as builders of "civilized" colonial Russian society with its attendant performances and social events. Although the bulk of their writings, drawings, and photography is primarily noteworthy for its cultural and historical value, A Woman's Empire demonstrates how they also add dimension and detail to the story of Russian imperial expansion and illuminates how women encountered, imagined, and depicted Russia's imperial Other during this period."--

    Abstract: Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty

    Abstract: Based on extensive interviews and oral histories as well as archival sources, Women and the Islamic Republic challenges the dominant masculine theorizations of state-making in post-revolutionary Iran. Shirin Saeidi demonstrates that despite the Islamic Republic's non-democratic structures, multiple forms of citizenship have developed in post-revolutionary Iran. This finding destabilizes the binary formulation of democratization and authoritarianism which has not only dominated investigations of Iran, but also regime categorizations in political science more broadly. As non-elite Iranian women negotiate or engage with the state's gendered citizenry regime, the Islamic Republic is forced to remake, oftentimes haphazardly, its citizenry agenda. The book demonstrates how women remake their rights, responsibilities, and statuses during everyday life to condition the state-making process in Iran, showing women's everyday resistance to the state-making process

    Abstract: The Kurdish women's movement is at the heart of the most exciting revolutionary experiment in the world today: Rojava. Forged over decades of struggle, most recently in the fight against ISIS, Rojava embodies a radical commitment to ecology, democracy and gender equality. But while striking images of Kurdish women in desert fatigues proliferate, a true understanding of the women's movement remains elusive. Taking apart the superficial and Orientalist frameworks that dominate, Dilar Dirik offers instead an empirically rich account of the women's movement in Kurdistan. Drawing on original research and ethnographic fieldwork, she surveys the movement's historical origins, ideological evolution, and political practice over the past forty years. Going beyond abstract ideas, Dirik locates the movement's culture and ideology in its concrete work for women's liberation and radical democracy. Taking the reader from the guerrilla camps in the mountains to radical women's academies and self-organized refugee camps, the book invites readers around the world to engage with the revolution in Kurdistan, both theoretically and practically, as a vital touchstone in the wider struggle for a militant anti-fascist, anti-capitalist feminist internationalism

    Abstract: "Feeding Fascism explores how women negotiated the politics of Italy’s Fascist regime in their daily lives and how they fed their families through agricultural and industrial labour. The book looks at women’s experiences of Fascism by examining the material world in which they lived in relation to their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Over the past decade, Diana Garvin has conducted extensive research in Italian museums, libraries, and archives. Feeding Fascism includes illustrations of rare cookbooks, kitchen utensils, cafeteria plans, and culinary propaganda to connect women’s political beliefs with the places that they lived and worked and the objects that they owned and borrowed. Garvin draws on first-hand accounts, such as diaries, work songs, and drawings, that demonstrate how women and the Fascist state vied for control over national diet across many manifestations-- cooking, feeding, and eating--to assert and negotiate their authority.     Abstract: Homogenization, Gender and Everyday Life in Pre- and Trans-modern Iran: An Archaeological Reading is actually an effort to investigate the interaction of power structure and gender in the context of everyday life in Iran in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The book pursues two main goals: situating gender in Iranian archaeology and calling for more consideration to daily life in archaeological gender researches. Drawing on a wide range of material culture, textual evidence, statistics and oral accounts, all chapters render the destruction of the everyday life of ordinary people. Events like parties and ceremonies, marriage and kinship, sexual practices, dress codes and even eating and drinking were gently regulated by the surveillance state. Accordingly, the term homogenization in the book's title refers to the policies of the Pahlavi government, the first Iranian modern centralized state. In this way, the book seeks to understand the process of gender and sexual transformation of Iranian society, the process which resulted in the production of deviants and negative gender and sexual lives. Being the first archaeological research on gender by native archaeologists, the authors state the fact that this book investigates the politics of gender while many other aspects of gender remain still uninvestigated

    Abstract: "This volume offers an overview of what it was like to be female and to live and die in Victorian England (c. 1837-1901), by situating this experience within the scientific and social contexts of the times. With a temporal focus on women's life experience, the book moves from childhood and youth, through puberty and adolescence, to pregnancy, birth, and motherhood, into senescence. Drawing on osteological sources, medical discourses, and examples from the literature and cultural history of the period, alongside social and environmental data derived from ethnographic and archival investigations, the authors explore the experience of being female in the Victorian era for women across classes. In synthesizing current research on demographic statistics, maternal morbidity and mortality, and bioarchaeological evidence on patterns of aging and death, they analyze how changing social ideals, cultural and environmental variability, shifting economies, and evolving medical and scientific understanding about the body combined to shape female health and identity in the nineteenth century. Victorian women faced a variety of challenges, including changing attitudes regarding appropriate behavior, social roles, and beauty standards, while grappling with new understandings of the role played by gender and sexuality in shaping women's lives from youth to old age. The book concludes by considering the relevance of how Victorian narratives of womanhood and the experience of being female have influenced perceptions of female health and cultural constructions of identity today"

    Abstract: Ob in der Antike, im Zweiten Weltkrieg oder im syrischen Bürgerkrieg: Invasoren setzen sexualisierte Gewalt gegen Frauen, Kinder und teilweise auch gegen Männer ein, um Gemeinschaften zu terrorisieren, zu demoralisieren und zu vertreiben sowie die eigene Macht zu demonstrieren. Die britische Journalistin und Kriegsreporterin Christina Lamb gibt Überlebenden eine Stimme. Eindrücklich schildern diese ihre schrecklichen Erlebnisse und verdeutlichen so den großen Aufklärungs- und Handlungsbedarf, den es hinsichtlich sexualisierter Gewalt in Kriegsgebieten gibt. Lamb reist für ihre Recherche um den Globus und spricht mit Überlebenden und ehrenamtlichen Helferinnen und Helfern in Asien, Afrika, Südamerika und Europa. Es wird deutlich, dass Vergewaltigungen und sexualisierte Gewalt nicht allein Begleiterscheinungen von Kriegen sind, sondern gezielt eingesetzt werden.
    Abstract: Das erschütternde Schicksal von Frauen in Kriegsgebieten wird gern übersehen, die Aufmerksamkeit gilt meist den Kämpfern an der Front. Dabei wird immer häufiger sexuelle Gewalt gegen Frauen systematisch als Kriegswaffe eingesetzt. Christina Lamb von der "Sunday Times" ist eine von ganz wenigen Kriegskorrespondentinnen. Seit Jahren bereist sie Krisengebiete wie Irak, Syrien, Nigeria und Myanmar und spricht mit den Frauen, Überlebenden, Geflüchteten über ihre Erfahrungen in Kriegszeiten: von Jesidinnen, die von IS-Kämpfern versklavt wurden, bis zur Ärztin im Kongo, die täglich Vergewaltigungsopfer versorgt. Ihnen will sie endlich eine Stimme geben und damit zugleich auf einen Missstand aufmerksam machen: Vergewaltigungen, die zur Massenvernichtungswaffe geworden sind, gehören endlich international geahndet!

    Abstract: Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty

    Abstract: This first significant collection of essays on women in China in more than two decades captures a pivotal moment in a cross-cultural-and interdisciplinary-dialogue.     Abstract: "In the current boisterous debate over the relationship between slavery and capitalism, one subject has been conspicuously absent: women, both enslaved and free. This project places women's labor at the center of the antebellum slave trade, focusing particularly on slave traders' ability to profit from enslaved women's domestic, reproductive, and sexual labor. Alexandra J. Finley shows how women often performed the foundational labor necessary to the functioning of the slave trade, and thus to the spread of slavery to the Lower South, the expansion of cotton production, and the profits accompanying both of these markets. She makes this argument through five case studies, each of which highlights a particular woman or group of women who labored in the slave market. Some of these women performed domestic labor for slave traders, sewing outfits for enslaved people about to be sold, cooking meals for traders traveling to slave markets in New Orleans, or operating boarding houses where traders lodged. Many also performed reproductive labor, raising slave traders' children, giving birth to the future enslaved workforce, or practicing midwifery. Or they were chosen as concubines, or "fancy girls." Such women exemplify the importance of female labor to slave trading, performing domestic, reproductive, and sexual labor all at once for the man who enslaved them. In bringing a gendered perspective to the economic history of slavery, which is currently missing from the conversation, Finley demonstrates that women's labor was not "natural" or incidental to economic development, but a product of specific discourses about the biological roots of gender and race"--

    Abstract: Als Reaktion auf die Kolonialisierung weiter Teile der islamischen Welt durch westliche Mächte entstand eine neue geistige Strömung, die besonders darauf bedacht war, den Islam den modernen Zeiten anzupassen. Dieser Reformdiskurs erfasste alle Teile der islamischen Welt und man diskutierte vielerorts die Frage einer Reformfähigkeit des Islams. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem tunesischen Reformdenker at-Tahir al-Haddad (1899-1935), der der islamwissenschaftlichen Forschung trotz seines langjährigen Wirkens bislang unbekannt geblieben ist, und seinem Werk "Die tunesische Frau in Gesetz und Gesellschaft". Mit diesem Werk verfolgte al-Haddad die Absicht, hinsichtlich der Frauenproblematik die traditionelle tunesische in eine moderne Gesellschaft umzuformen. Er löste damit jedoch eine Welle der Empörung und Ablehnung aus, die sich auf dramatische Weise auf sein Leben auswirken sollte. Erst zwei Jahrzehnte nach seinem Tod konnten die Gedanken des verkannten Reformers auf die Gestaltung der tunesischen Gesellschaft Einfluss nehmen.

    Abstract: Practices of Traditionalization in Central Asia focuses on how tradition is `everyday-ified` in contemporary Central Asia, including Tatarstan and Tibet, and what people seek to achieve in its name. The case studies range from political demonstrations and industrial workers` gatherings to institutions of religious education, minority communities, weddings, and the Internet.In this volume we regard tradition as a practice that needs to be explored in its institutional and interactional context at a particular time, rather than as a reliable guide to the past: tradition can only be judged from the present; it is an interpretative concept, not a descriptive one. While the scholarly debate has so far centered on what tradition entails and what it does not, including the question of invention and ownership, less attention has been devoted to investigating how tradition is enacted, enforced, or motivated - in short, how it `gets done.` In Central Asia, practices of traditionalization are closely related to the transformation of the socialist order and the emergence of highly stratified societies. This volume asks: When does tradition emerge as a line of argumentation, who are the actors invoking it and how is it being (materially) manifested?Practices of Traditionalization in Central Asia will be of great interest to scholars of Central Asia, Anthropology, History, Political Science, and Sociology.     Abstract: As Kenyan women traditionally have fewer formal employment opportunities, often occupying lower-paid jobs in the informal sector, the experiences of women who earn money in unorthodox ways can offer revealing insights into the agency of women and its limits. Grounded in the narratives and life stories of women selling sex in Kenya, Eglė Česnulytė reveals the range of gendered and gendering effects that neoliberal policies have on everyday socio-political realities. By contextualising and historicising contemporary debates in the field, this important interdisciplinary study explores the societal structures that neo-liberal narratives and reforms influence, their gendered effects, and the extent to which individuals must internalise neoliberal economic logics in order to make or improve their living. In so doing, Česnulytė counters the prevailing male-dominated studies in political science to place women, and female-based narratives at the forefront

    Abstract: Hacking, as a mode of technical and cultural production, is commonly celebrated for its extraordinary freedoms of creation and circulation. Yet surprisingly few women participate in it: rates of involvement by technologically skilled women are drastically lower in hacking communities than in industry and academia. Hacking Diversity investigates the activists engaged in free and open-source software to understand why, despite their efforts, they fail to achieve the diversity that their ideals support. Christina Dunbar-Hester shows that within this well-meaning volunteer world, beyond the sway of human resource departments and equal opportunity legislation, members of underrepresented groups face unique challenges. She brings together more than five years of firsthand research: attending software conferences and training events, working on message boards and listservs, and frequenting hackerspaces.

    Abstract: Long description: Sozialer Wandel hat seine eigene Theoretisierung eingeholt: Die modernisierungstheoretische Vorstellung eines linearen, rationalen, universalgesetzlichen Fortschritts stößt an die Grenzen ihrer Erklärungskraft. Julia Elven schlägt daher eine praxistheoretische Wandelforschung vor, die gesellschaftliche Transformationen auf Basis ihres konkreten praktischen Geschehens analysierbar macht. Sozialer Wandel kommt dann als dezentraler, multidirektionaler, kontingenter Prozess in den Blick, der unterschiedlichen Logiken zugleich folgt. Denn nicht in der Suche nach dem allgemeinen rationalen Prinzip hinter sozialen Dynamiken, sondern in der Rekonstruktion der Interferenzen divergierender Rationalitäten liegt der Schlüssel zum Verständnis sozialen Wandels
    Abstract: Biographical note: Julia Elven (Dipl.-Soz.) ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Erziehungswissenschaft der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Sie promovierte im Fach Soziologie an der Universität zu Köln und forscht zu sozialen, insbesondere organisational vermittelten Bedingungen von Bildungsprozessen in Studium und beruflicher Laufbahn. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Theorien sozialen Wandels, Bildungs- und Laufbahnforschung sowie Organisationsforschung

    Abstract: Fäkalkomik galt lange Zeit als männliche Domäne. Doch inzwischen entwerfen Komikerinnen wie Amy Schumer oder Rachel Bloom ganz eigene Perspektiven und Deutungsrahmen einer weiblichen Fäkalkomik. Unter dem Schlagwort »Poop Feminism« unterzieht Gregor Balke die semantischen Konturen dieser Komik mit Körperflüssigkeiten einer originellen Lesart des Populären und deutet sie - so die soziologische Pointe - als neues und subversives Mittel weiblicher Selbstermächtigung. In der mit ihren leiblichen Eskapaden inszenierten Frau, die hier als populärkulturelle persona in Erscheinung tritt, wird so eine Reflexionsfigur der Gegenwart greifbar, die das bekannte Missverhältnis der Geschlechter von einer durchaus unerwarteten Seite her zurechtzurücken vermag
