Abstract: Drawing upon original interviews, his own relationship with Kerouac, Kerouac's recently published letters, and still-unpublished journals from the Kerouac archives, Ellis Amburn reveals an inner Kerouac that has not appeared in any previous biography. This is the "subterranean" Kerouac whom Amburn, the editor of his last two novels, knew personally, having witnessed the legendary Beat writer's decline into alcoholic despair during the last few years of his life. Perhaps the greatest of Kerouac's conflicts centered around his sexual relationships with men. Amburn recounts what Kerouac himself told him about these experiences, which other biographers have never before reported, and sheds new light on their profound impact on the man who remained convinced until his death that he was not bisexual, and that homosexuality was in fact immoral.

Abstract: It is a common experience for Americans traveling in Europe to discover that the cultural icons of the United States have followed them across the Atlantic. On the billboards are Michael Jordan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, on the television are Seinfeld and Friends, and on the radio are Garth Brooks and Madonna. Much has been written about the influence of McDonald's or about the "Coca-colonization" of the world, but in Not Like Us, the eminent historian Richard Pells examines the more subtle and intriguing interplay between America and Europe in the decades since the end of World War II. In a masterful analysis of the past fifty years, Pells describes how the cultures on each side of the Atlantic have transformed one another, and he reveals the reasons why the Europeans never became truly "Americanized" and why it was a good thing that they didn't.

Abstract: Enormous skyscrapers will house residents and workers who happily go "for weeks" without setting foot on the ground. Streamlined, "hurricane-proof" houses will pivot on their foundations like weather vanes. The family car will turn into an airplane so easily that "a woman can do it in five minutes." Our wars will be fought by robots. And our living room furniture - waterproof, of course - will clean up with a squirt from the garden hose. In Yesterday's Tomorrows Joseph J. Corn and Brian Horrigan explore the future as Americans earlier in this century expected it to happen. Filled with vivid color images and lively text, the book is an eloquent testimony to the confidence - and, at times, the naive faith - Americans have had in science and technology. The future that emerges here, the authors conclude, is one in which technology changes, but society and politics usually do not
Abstract: The authors draw on a wide variety of sources - popular-science magazines, science fiction, world fair exhibits, films, advertisements, and plans for things only dreamed of. From Jules Verne to the Jetsons, from a 500-passenger flying wing to an anti-aircraft flying buzz-saw, the vision of the future as seen through the eyes of the past demonstrates the play of the American imagination on the canvas of the future

Abstract: Equal parts soap opera, gossip page, sociological study, and dating manual, "Sex and the City," Candace Bushnell's regular New York Observer column, has attracted a cult following, propelling Bushnell to achieve her own star-status. This collection brings her pieces together for the first time, where they read as a twisted nineties society novel in serial format. A chronicle of the mating habits of our cultural elite, Sex and the City makes a stage of the various launch parties, openings, and celebrity affairs that keep New York's high society amused. It has long since been proven that the later Candace stays out at night, the better the stories she comes home with. In addition to banging on kitchen doors for more champagne, her stunts include shedding her clothes to infiltrate a sex club, plying a roomful of men with rum and marijuana as a prelude to a discussion of menage a trois, and venturing to the most posh of all suburbs to interview married women about their sex lives (only to return to Manhattan and forget her sordid findings with the aid of several cocktails). Sex and the City is a modern-day comedy of errors, a fantastic and sometimes terrifying foray into the hearts and minds of city dwellers. Traveling in packs from parties to bars to clubs, Bushnell's characters carry on the never-ending search for the perfect marriage partner, the most coveted piece of gossip, and, when the night is done, someone to go home with.

Abstract: This remarkable group of essays describes the "culture wars" that consolidated a new, secular ethos in mid-twentieth-century American academia and generated the fresh energies needed for a wide range of scientific and cultural enterprises. Focusing on the decades from the 1930s through the 1960s, David Hollinger discusses the scientists, social scientists, philosophers, and historians who fought the Christian biases that had kept Jews from fully participating in American intellectual life. Today social critics take for granted the comparatively open outlook developed by these men (and men they were, mostly), and charge that their cosmopolitanism was not sufficiently multicultural
Abstract: Yet Hollinger shows that the liberal cosmopolitans of the midcentury generation defined themselves against the realities of their own time: McCarthyism, Nazi and Communist doctrines, a legacy of anti-Semitic quotas, and both Protestant and Catholic versions of the notion of a "Christian America." The victory of liberal cosmopolitans was so sweeping by the 1960s that it has become easy to forget the strength of the enemies they fought
Abstract: Most books addressing the emergence of Jewish intellectuals celebrate an illustrious cohort of literary figures based in New York City. But the pieces collected here explore the long-postponed acceptance of Jewish immigrants in a variety of settings, especially the social science and humanities faculties of major universities scattered across the country. Hollinger acknowledges the limited, rather parochial sense of "mankind" that informed some midcentury thinking, but he also inspires in the reader an appreciation for the integrationist aspirations of a society truly striving toward equality. His cast of characters includes Vannevar Bush, James B. Conant, Richard Hofstadter, Robert K. Merton, Lionel Trilling, and J. Robert Oppenheimer

Abstract: When she died in poverty and obscurity in 1960, all of Zora Neale Hurston's books were out of print. Today her groundbreaking works, suffused with the culture and traditions of African-Americans and the poetry of black speech, have won her recognition as one of the most significant African-American writers. This volume, with its companion, Novels & Stories brings together for the first time all of Hurston's best writings in one authoritative set. "Folklore is the arts of the people", Hurston wrote, "before they find out that there is any such thing as art". A pioneer of African-American ethnography who did graduate study in anthropology with the renowned Franz Boas, Hurston devoted herseif to preserving the black folk heritage
Abstract: In Mules and Men (1935), the first book of African-American folklore written by an African-American, she returned to her native Florida and to New Orleans to record stories and sermons, blues and work songs, children's games, courtship rituals, and formulas of hoodoo doctors. This classic work is presented here with the original illustrations by the great Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias. Tell My Horse (1938), part ethnography, part travel book, vividly recounts the survival of African religion in Jamaican obeah and Haitian voodoo in the 1930s. Keenly alert to political and intellectual currents, Hurston went beyond superficial exoticism to explore the role of these religious systems in their societies. The text is illustrated by 26 photographs, many of them taken by Huston. Her extensive transcriptions of Creole songs here accompanied by new translation. A special feature of this volume is Hurston's controversial 1942 autobiography, Dust Tracks on a Road
Abstract: With consultation by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., it is presented here for the first time as she intended, restoring passages omitted by the original publisher because of political controversy, sexual candor, or fear of libel. Included in an appendix are four additional chapters, one never before published, that represent earlier stages of Hurston's conception of the book. Twenty-two essays, from "The Eatonville Anthology" (1926) to "Court Order Can't Make Races Mix" (1955), demonstrate the range of Hurston's concerns as they cover subjects from religion, music, and Harlem slang to Jim Crow and American democracy. The chronology of Hurston's life prepared for this edition sheds fresh light on many aspects of her career. In addition, this volume contains detailed notes and a brief essay on the texts
