    Kurzfassung: Berlin besitzt die größte und facettenreichste jüdische Gemeinschaft Deutschlands. Erstmals seit 1945 haben sich hier lebende Juden in den letzten Jahren wieder auf eine dauerhafte Existenz eingerichtet. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht die Zunahme kultureller Vielfalt insbesondere außerhalb der Berliner Gemeinde und die innerjüdische Bewertung dieser Entwicklung im Zentrum der kultursoziologisch verorteten Grundlagenarbeit. Außerdem werden - als ein neu gewonnener Forschungsblick - Fragen nach jüdischen Umgangsweisen mit Antisemitismus und philosemitischen Hypes behandelt sowie unterschiedlichste neuere jüdische Gruppenaktivitäten eingehend beleuchtet. Ausführliche Interviews mit engagierten Jüdinnen und Juden bilden die empirische Basis der Untersuchung. Zentrale Befunde der Studie bestehen in innerjüdischen Pluralisierungstendenzen sowie in wachsendem jüdischen Selbstbewusstsein nach außen

    Kurzfassung: In this original interdisciplinary study of Togo and African colonial history, Benjamin Lawrance synthesizes political, gender, and social history by documenting the contributions of rural-dwelling populations in anti-colonial struggles. Anchoring his arguments on the premise that nationalist historiographies have overstated the role of urban and elite power while undervaluing the strategic place of rural constituencies, Lawrance uses the Ewe nationalist movement of southern Togo as a case study in what he terms "periurban colonialism" -- a historical paradigm that reunites the urban and rural experiences of post-World War I colonialism. By reconciling the marginal and non-elite communities and the social upheavals of the two World War periods, Lawrance offers a new perspective on the colonial experience and the anti-colonial struggle. In focusing on an African country uniquely colonized by the Germans, British, and French, he provides a wealth of information not readily available to the English-language audience.     Kurzfassung: From AD 1550 to 1850, the Araucanian polity in southern Chile was a center of political resistance to the intruding Spanish empire. In this 2007 book, Tom D. Dillehay examines the resistance strategies of the Araucanians and how they used mound building and other sacred monuments to reorganize their political and culture life in order to unite against the Spanish. Drawing on anthropological research conducted over three decades, Dillehay focuses on the development of leadership, shamanism, ritual, and power relations. His study combines developments in social theory with the archaeological, ethnographic, and historical records. Both theoretically and empirically informed, this book is a fascinating account of the only indigenous ethnic group to successfully resist outsiders for more than three centuries and to flourish under these conditions

    Kurzfassung: This 2007 book is an introductory history of racial slavery in the Americas. Brazil and Cuba were among the first colonial societies to establish slavery in the early sixteenth century. Approximately a century later British colonial Virginia was founded, and slavery became an integral part of local culture and society. In all three nations, slavery spread to nearly every region, and in many areas it was the principal labor system utilized by rural and urban elites. Yet long after it had been abolished elsewhere in the Americas, slavery stubbornly persisted in the three nations. It took a destructive Civil War in the United States to bring an end to racial slavery in the southern states in 1865. In 1866 slavery was officially ended in Cuba, and in 1888 Brazil finally abolished this dreadful institution, and legalized slavery in the Americas came to an end

From 1990 to 1993, at an unparalleled moment in German history, Olaf Georg Klein interviewed almost a hundred fellow former East German citizens, probing their experiences of the sudden collapse of the German Democratic Republic, then crafting that material into twelve first-person narratives. The result is a literary account whose narrators include representatives from the cities and the countryside, from young and old, from the East German power elite and the resistance, as well as from those in position to be critical of both the GDR and united Germany. The book was a sensation in Germany upon its publication in 1994, and the translation will be of interest to students and scholars in history and political science, sociology, psychology, and literary studies.     Kurzfassung: A narration of the mutually mortal historical contest between humans and nature in Latin America. Covering a period that begins with Amerindian civilizations and concludes in the region's present urban agglomerations, the work offers an original synthesis of the current scholarship on Latin America's environmental history and argues that tropical nature played a central role in shaping the region's historical development. Human attitudes, populations, and appetites, from Aztec cannibalism to more contemporary forms of conspicuous consumption, figure prominently in the story. However, characters such as hookworms, whales, hurricanes, bananas, dirt, butterflies, guano, and fungi make more than cameo appearances. Recent scholarship has overturned many of our egocentric assumptions about humanity's role in history. Seeing Latin America's environmental past from the perspective of many centuries illustrates that human civilizations, ancient and modern, have been simultaneously more powerful and more vulnerable than previously thought

Not so, according to Marika Sherwood, who sets the record straight in this provocative new book. In fact, Sherwood demonstrates Britain continued to contribute to and profit from the slave trade well after 1807, even into the twentieth century. Drawing on unpublished sources in areas of British history which have been previously overlooked, she describes how slavery remained very much a part of British commerce and empire, especially in the use of slave labour in Britain's African colonies. She also examines some of the causes and repercussions of continued British involvement in slavery and describes many of the shady characters, as well as the heroes, connected with the trade - at all levels of society. After Abolition contains important revelations about a darker side of British history which will provoke real questions about Britain's perceptions of its past

    Kurzfassung: Dass die Rassismusanalyse sich nicht mit »dem Rassismus«, sondern mit unterschiedlichen »Rassismen« beschäftigt, ist mittlerweile ein methodischer Gemeinplatz. Rassismus muss in seinen spezifischen sozialhistorischen Ausprägungen und konkreten Verbindungen mit anderen Formen sozialer Diskriminierung untersucht werden. Dieser Band diskutiert die dazu entwickelten Ansätze und die damit verbundenen Probleme in drei zentralen Kontexten: kategorial im Hinblick auf zentrale Begriffe der Rassismusforschung, historisch im Zusammenhang mit den Formen rassistisch bestimmter Inklusion und Exklusion und politisch in Bezug auf Methoden und Funktionen rassistischer Vergesellschaftung
