    Abstract: "A multifaceted exploration of the Holocaust which connects its relationship with genocide, the importance of first-person histories of atrocity, and links to the 1948 Palestinian Nakba together in unprecedented fashion"
    Abstract: This book discusses some of the most urgent current debates over the study, commemoration, and politicization of the Holocaust through key critical perspectives. Omer Bartov adeptly assesses the tensions between Holocaust and genocide studies, which have repeatedly both enriched and clashed with each other, whilst convincingly arguing for the importance of local history and individual testimony in grasping the nature of mass murder. He goes on to critically examine how legal discourse has served to both uncover and deny individual and national complicity. Genocide, the Holocaust and Israel-Palestine outlines how first-person histories provide a better understanding of events otherwise perceived as inexplicable and, lastly, draws on the author s own personal trajectory to consider links between the fate of Jews in World War II and the plight of Palestinians during and in the aftermath of the establishment of the state of Israel. Bartov demonstrates that these five perspectives, rarely if ever previously discussed in a single book, are inextricably linked, and shed much light on each other. Thus the Holocaust and other genocides must be seen as related catastrophes in the modern era; understanding such vast human tragedies necessitates scrutinizing them on the local and personal scale; this in turn calls for historical empathy, accomplished via personal-biographical introspection; and true, open-minded, and rigorous introspection, without which historical understanding tends toward obfuscation, brings to light uncomfortable yet clarifying connections, such as that between the Holocaust and the Nakba, the mass flight and expulsion of the Palestinians in 1948

    Abstract: This book comprises 40 short texts by urban sustainability scholars from around the globe. The scholars are recipients of a six-month research stay grant from the Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), a DAAD Exceed center funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). SMUS is a global network of researchers and practitioners from over 48 universities and institutions who work together to improve academic education in spatial disciplines. Through collaborative teaching, workshops, conferences, and training, network partners work across disciplines to advance urban sustainability. From September 2020 through February 2021, 40 scholars participated in the centre’s ‘Developing a PhD Proposal’ program by organising workshops, partaking in excursions, and attending classes. The classes covered topics such as research ethics and skills, spatial methods, and urban sustainability, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal #11, which is about ‘making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. As part of their coursework, the students were tasked with writing short texts about how the topics covered manifest themselves in their respective home countries. This book is a compilation of those country replies, giving the reader a glimpse into urban sustainability perspectives from around the globe. The book includes a series of maps depicting the geographic locations represented in the country replies. They have been included to help the reader navigate the book and to highlight the diversity of topics and themes researchers are working on in the SMUS network.

Die Verfasser*innen der Texte waren Teil eines sechsmonatigen Forschungsstipendiums des Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), einem vom Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) geförderten DAAD exceed-Zentrum. SMUS ist ein globales Netzwerk, von Wissenschaftler*innen und Fachkräften aus über 48 Universitäten und Institutionen, das sich zum Ziel setzt raumbezogene Disziplinen durch Forschung und Lehre zu fördern. Durch gemeinsame Lehrveranstaltungen, Workshops, Konferenzen und Fortbildungen arbeiten die Netzwerkpartner interdisziplinär an der Umsetzung der urbanen Nachhaltigkeit. This book explores the experiences of the ethnic and religious minorities of Iran, such as Jews, Yarsani, Christian, Sabean Mandaean, Bahai, Zoroastrian, Baluch, Kurd, and others and provides a historical overview of their position in society before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution and highlights their contribution to the country's history, diversity, and development.     Abstract: This book, drawing on fresh scholarship, investigates electrification in new places and across different time periods. While much of our understanding of electrification as a historical process is based on the seminal work done by Thomas P. Hughes in Networks of Power (1983), the scholars in this volume expand and revise Hughes’ systems approach to suggest that electrification is a heterogeneous and contingent process. Moreover, the contributors suggest that the conquest of the world by electricity remains incomplete despite more than a century elapsing. Above all, though, this book provides context for thinking about what lies ahead as humans continue their conquest of the earth through electricity. As we become increasingly dependent on electricity to power our lights, heat and cool our homes, turn the wheels of industry, and keep our information systems humming, so we are ever more vulnerable when the grid runs into trouble.     Abstract: Wenn Menschen miteinander musizieren, koordinieren und synchronisieren sie ihre Handlungen so präzise, dass sie ein hörbares Kollektivgebilde konstruieren: Gemeinsame Musik. Das ist eine herausragende Leistung, die ein Grundinteresse adressiert, das nicht nur die Musiksoziologie, sondern die Soziologie und Sozialtheorie gleichermaßen betrifft: Wie gelingt es Handelnden, gemeinsam Soziales zu erschaffen? Die Untersuchung baut auf Alfred Schütz‘ klassischem Aufsatz „Gemeinsam Musizieren“ auf und folgt der Frage, wie es Musiker:innen gelingt, mit Noten und Instrumenten gemeinsam zu musizieren und wie dies durch die Spielenden erlebt wird. Sie wird anhand von Streichensembles untersucht, die ohne Dirigierende musizieren. Durch die Integration von Videographie, fokussierter und lebensweltanalytischer Ethnographie wird der Blick keineswegs auf situatives Musizieren verengt, sondern die institutionelle und organisationale Ordnung des Forschungsfeldes systematisch integriert. Sozialtheoretisch wird die Untersuchung mit dem Kommunikativen Konstruktivismus gerahmt. Dies ist ein Open-Access-Buch

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Bis heute muss der griechische Gott Dionysos herhalten, wenn von ihnen die Rede ist: Ekstasen sind wild, ihnen wohnt eine Energie inne, die fühlen kann, wer gerade entrückt ist, die aber nur allzu schwer in Worte zu fassen ist. Schamanen bewegen sich in Ekstase in unsichtbaren Welten, mittelalterliche Mystikerinnen vereinigten sich in ihr mit Gott, und der Rausch war und ist ein fester Bestandteil jeder Gesellschaft. Weil sie schwer kontrollierbar sind, sind Ekstasen bis heute verpönt - völlig verschwunden sind sie jedoch nie. Und kehren mit aller Macht zurück: Überraschenderweise begegnen wir ihnen heute nicht nur beim Rave oder bei schamanistischen Ritualen, sondern auch in Yogaklassen, Achtsamkeitsseminaren und Workshops, die die Leistungsfähigkeit im Job verbessern sollen. Und nicht zuletzt zeigt sich der neue Boom der Ekstatik in Krisenphänomenen wie einer martialischen Männlichkeit, in Massenbewegungen wie dem gewaltsamen Sturm aufs Kapitol in Washington oder den Protesten gegen die Coronamassnahmen. Woher aber kommt diese neue Lust an der Ekstase? Es ist höchste Zeit, mit historischer Tiefenschärfe, kritischer Neugier, einem analytischen Blick auf die Gegenwart und kulturellem Respekt in medizinischen Labors, bei Hexen-Ritualen, Ayahuasca-Zeremonien und in der Clubkultur diesem menschlichen Grundbedürfnis nach Selbstüberschreitung nachzuspüren - um so eine Ethik für die Ekstasen der Gegenwart zu finden.

Die vermeintlich ›eindeutigen‹ Bedeutungsebenen dieses Komplexes waren lange Zeit stabil genug, um die sozialwissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung zu lähmen. Seit einiger Zeit treten nun aber Diskurse hinzu, die die normativen Elemente der Bestattungskultur, den Umgang mit toten Körpern und Kremationsasche, die Etikettierungsleistung ärztlicher Diagnosen und die Bestimmung der Grenze zwischen Leben und Tod (wieder) in Frage stellen. Reale Handlungspraxen und kulturelle Vorgaben befinden sich heute in einem – durchaus produktiven – Spannungsverhältnis
    Abstract: Society's view of dying and death no longer corresponds to the fixed images with which the corresponding areas of knowledge were associated until a few years ago. For a long time, the supposedly ›unambiguous‹ levels of meaning of this complex issue were stable enough to paralyse social scientific research. For some time now, however, discourses have been emerging that (re)question the normative elements of funeral culture, the treatment of dead bodies and cremation ashes, the labelling of medical diagnoses, and the determination of the boundary between life and death. Today, there is a—quite productive—tension between real practices and cultural guidelines

    Abstract: Colonial and imperial powers have often portrayed arid lands as "empty" spaces ready to be occupied, exploited, extracted, and polluted. Despite the undeniable presence of human and nonhuman lives and forces in desert territories, the "regime of emptiness" has inhabited, and is still inhabiting, many imaginaries. Deserts Are Not Empty challenges this colonial tendency, questions its roots and ramifications, and remaps the representations, theories, histories, and stories of arid lands—which comprise approximately one-third of the Earth’s land surface. The volume brings together poems in original languages, conversations with collectives, and essays by scholars and professionals from the fields of architecture, architectural history and theory, curatorial studies, comparative literature, film studies, landscape architecture, and photography.     Abstract: The current crises can only be overcome through solidarity. The concept of solidarity was central to the thinking of Oswald von Nell-Breuning SJ (1890–1991), the most important German academic of Catholic social teaching in the 20th century.     Abstract: Based on extensive interviews and oral histories as well as archival sources, Women and the Islamic Republic challenges the dominant masculine theorizations of state-making in post-revolutionary Iran. Shirin Saeidi demonstrates that despite the Islamic Republic's non-democratic structures, multiple forms of citizenship have developed in post-revolutionary Iran. This finding destabilizes the binary formulation of democratization and authoritarianism which has not only dominated investigations of Iran, but also regime categorizations in political science more broadly. As non-elite Iranian women negotiate or engage with the state's gendered citizenry regime, the Islamic Republic is forced to remake, oftentimes haphazardly, its citizenry agenda. The book demonstrates how women remake their rights, responsibilities, and statuses during everyday life to condition the state-making process in Iran, showing women's everyday resistance to the state-making process

    Abstract: "This volume gathers the perspectives of teachers in higher education from all over the world on the topic of New Testament scholarship. The goal is to understand and describe the contexts and conditions under which New Testament research is carried out throughout the world. This endeavor should serve as a catalyst for new initiatives and the development of questions that determine the future directions of New Testament scholarship. At the same time, it is intended to raise awareness of the global dimensions of New Testament scholarship, especially in relation to its impact on socio-political debates. The occasion for these reflections are not least the present questions that have been posed with the corona pandemic and have received a focus on the ""system relevance"" of churches, which is openly questioned by the media. The church and theology must face this challenge.
