    Kurzfassung: Der wissenschaftliche Rassismus untermauerte seine Theorien durch eine ungeheure Knochensammlung, deren Beschaffung im 19. Jahrhundert eine regelrechte Skelettomanie auslöste. Die Jagd nach den Gebeinen der anderen missachtete jede Pietät. Sie störte die Totenruhe, raubte Leichen und schändete die Körper Verstorbener, deren Überreste zur Konstruktion typischer Rassenkörper dienten. Sie sollten Devianz gegenüber der weißen Norm demonstrieren - ihre öffentliche Zurschaustellung visualisierte und popularisierte die Rassentheorien und erlaubte den Betrachtern die Akkumulation rassistischen symbolischen Kapitals. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen diesen Prozess an den Beispielen von Angelo Soliman, Sarah Baartman, El Negro und Truganini

    Kurzfassung: Tan Ta Sen has modestly suggested that, as a book to illustrate the peaceful impact of culture contact, he is concerned to show how such cultural influences not only led to transmissions, conversions and transferences involving Inner Asian Muslims from China and Yunnan Muslims, Chams, Javanese, Malays, Arabs and Indians, but also enabled many Chinese in the Malay world to retain their non-Muslim cultural traits. In placing Cheng Ho's voyages in this context, the author offers a fresh perspective on a momentous set of events in Chinese maritime history. Professor Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore. Tan Ta Sen's book on Cheng Ho and Islam in Southeast Asia is not the first one on the subject, but it is the first book that puts Cheng Ho's voyages in the larger context of "culture contact" in China and beyond. He has garnered numerous sources, from published documents to architectural sites and buildings, to support his arguments.     Kurzfassung: This book traces the origins and early development of what are today loosely termed Britain's Overseas Information Services. It examines how, at the end of the First World War, the British government came to forfeit the considerable lead it had established in propaganda since 1914, and the reasons why it had gradually to re-enter the field during the inter-war years as a direct response to totalitarianism. It surveys the pioneering work of the Foreign Office News Department and its important press office, the commercial propaganda conducted by the Empire Marketing Board and the Travel Association, the foundation and rapid peacetime growth of the British Council to conduct 'cultural diplomacy', and the beginning of the BBC's World Service with the inauguration of foreign-language broadcasts in 1938

    Kurzfassung: During recent years, attempts have been made to move beyond the Eurocentric perspective that characterized the social sciences, especially anthropology, for over 150 years. A debate on the "anthropology of anthropology" was needed, one that would consider other forms of knowledge, modalities of writing, and political and intellectual practices. This volume undertakes that challenge: it is the result of discussions held at the first organized encounter between Iranian, American, and European anthropologists since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. It is considered an important first step in overcoming the dichotomy between "peripheral anthropologies" versus "central anthropologies." The contributors examine, from a critical perspective, the historical, cultural, and political field in which anthropological research emerged in Iran at the beginning of the twentieth century and in which it continues to develop today

As the Qajar dynasty sought to integrate the peoples on its margins into the state, the British Empire made commercial inroads into the once inaccessible mountains on the frontier between Iran and Iraq. The distance between the state and the tribes was narrowed through imperial projects that included the building of a road through the mountains, the gathering of geographical and ethnographic information, and the exploration for oil, which culminated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. These modern projects assimilated autonomous pastoral nomadic tribes on the peripheries of Qajar Iran into a wider imperial territory and the world economy. Tribal subjects did not remain passive amidst these changes in environment and society, however, and projects of empire in the hinterlands of Iran were always mediated through encounters, accommodation, and engagement with the tribes. In contrast to the range of literature on the urban classes and political center in Qajar Iran, Arash Khazeni adopts a view from the Bakhtiyari tents on the periphery. Drawing upon Persian chronicles, tribal histories, and archival sources from London, Tehran, and Isfahan, this book opens new ground by approaching nineteenth-century Iran from its edge and placing the tribal periphery at the heart of a tale about empire and assimilation in the modern Middle East. --From publisher's description

    Kurzfassung: Dancing from the Heart is the first study of gender, globalization, and expressive culture in the Cook Islands. It demonstrates how dance in particular plays a key role in articulating the overlapping local, regional, and transnational agendas of Cook Islanders. Kalissa Alexeyeff reconfigures conventional views of globalization’s impact on indigenous communities, moving beyond diagnoses of cultural erosion and contamination to a grounded exploration of creative agency and vital cultural production. Central to the study is a rich and textured ethnographic account of contemporary Cook Islands dance practice. Based on fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and archival research, it offers an engrossing analysis of how Cook Islands social life is generated through expressive practices. Dance is explored in a variety of settings, including beauty pageants, tourist venues, nightclubs and community celebrations at home and within Cook Islands communities abroad.Contemporary Cook Islands dance practices are also shaped by competing ideas about the past. Debates about precolonial traditions, missionization, and colonialism pervade discussions about dance and expressive culture. Alexeyeff shows how the politics of tradition reflect the competing moral, political, personal, and economic practices of postcolonial Cook Islanders. Throughout the work the stories and voices of individuals are brought to the fore. Their views are juxtaposed with scholarship on tradition, modernity, and social dynamics.Engaging and accessible, Dancing from the Heart illuminates specific and intimate aspects of Cook Islands social life while, at the same time, addressing fundamental questions within anthropology and indigenous, performance, and postcolonial studies

When it gained independence from Britain in 1960, hopes were high that, with mineral wealth and over 140 million people, the most educated workforce in Africa, Nigeria would become Africa s first superpower and a stabilizing democratic influence in the region. However, these lofty hopes were soon dashed and the country lumbered from crisis to crisis, with the democratic government eventually being overthrown in a violent military coup in January 1966. From 1966 until 1999, the army held onto power almost uninterrupted under a succession of increasingly authoritarian military governments and army coups. Military coups and military rule (which began as an emergency aberration) became a seemingly permanent feature of Nigerian politics. The author names names, and explores how British influence aggravated indigenous rivalries.     Kurzfassung: Trotz seiner Beschränkung auf Recht, Staat und Verwaltung spiegelt der Band etwas von der Vielfalt der gegenwärtigen Forschung zur älteren indischen Geschichte wider. Dem hinduistischen Indien fehlt ja die indigene Historiographie. Das Gerüst aus Fakten und Ideen hat man aus disparaten Quellen zusammenzusetzen - und für lange Perioden, für ganze Regionen fehlen auch die. Man ist auf beiläufige Erwähnungen, auf Rituale, Sprachgeschichte, Dialektgeographie angewiesen. Deutlich später setzt der breite Strom der mit grossem Prestige ausgestatteten Rechts- oder Moralliteratur ein, der - wiederum beiläufig - ein in seinen Grundzügen kohärentes Bild vom Königtum, von Recht und Staat vermittelt. Dessen Realität ist jedoch immer wieder in Zweifel gezogen worden - nicht zuletzt durch die Texte selbst. Obwohl sie sich normierend geben, reden sie gelegentlich der Pluralität, den Lokaltraditionen das Wort. Die seit dem Mittelalter reichlicher fließenden inschriftlichen Quellen zeigen dann auch regional unterschiedliche Systeme - kaum verwunderlich angesichts der Ausdehnung und kulturellen Vielfalt des Subkontinents. Dazu kommen Partikularrechte einzelner religiöser Gruppen, únd die Akkulturation durch den sich ausbreitenden Hinduismus in mannigfachen Mischformen. All das dokumentiert den mühseligen Prozeß der Auseinandersetzung zwischen "Lokalbrauch" und der Begrifflichkeit der Orthodoxie

Die Ideologie des New Deal bildete die Grundlage für die offensive Kommunikation von Konzepten der liberaldemokratischen Führungsmacht USA, die in Westeuropa und insbesondere in der Bundesrepublik zur Geltung gebracht wurden. Hier trugen sie maßgeblich zur intellektuellen und ideelen Westorientierung in Politik und Gesellschaft bei. Zugleich führte der CCF den ideologischen Kampf gegen den Stalinismus und nutzte ihn dazu, linksliberale und sozialdemokratische Politiker und Intellektuelle in die kulturelle Front des Westens während des Kalten Krieges einzubinden. Entstanden im Rahmen des Tübinger "Westernization"-Forschungsprojekts, gibt "Freiheit in der Offensive?" erstmals und auf breiter Quellengrundlage solide Auskünfte über die Tätigkeit des CCF in der Bundesrepublik zwischen 1950 und 1967. Über eine reine Organisationsgeschichte hinaus zeichnet der Band die ideologische Entwicklung der CCF detailliert nach, um ihn so in eine Gesamtgeschichte deutscher "Westernisierung" einordnen zu können

In kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive schlägt er einen Bogen von den Überlegungen Jan Assmanns zur Verschriftung des Rechts im antiken Griechenland zu den Handlungsanweisungen für Automaten in der Jetztzeit. Wird die Dynamisierung der Schrift eine historische Zäsur herbeiführen wie die Ausformulierung gesetzlicher Anweisungen vor 2500 Jahren? Ein interessantes Kapitel der Mediengeschichte ebenso wie ein Ausblick auf zukünftige gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen durch die Kybernetik
