The human species is the only one that takes milk from other animals and consumes it beyond weaning age. Cultures of Milk contrasts the practices of the world's two leading milk producers, India and the United States. In both countries, milk is considered to have special qualities. Drawing on ethnographic and scientific studies, popular media, and government reports, Andrea Wiley reveals that the cultural significance of milk goes well beyond its nutritive value. Shifting socioeconomic and political factors influence how people perceive the importance of milk and how much they consume. In India, where milk is out of reach for many, consumption is rising rapidly among the urban middle class. But milk drinking is declining in America, despite the strength of the dairy industry. Milk is bound up in discussions of food scarcity in India and food abundance in the United States. Promotion of milk as a means to enhance child growth boosted consumption in twentieth-century America and is currently doing the same in India, where average height is low. Wiley considers how variation among populations in the ability to digest lactose and ideas about how milk affects digestion influence the type of milk and milk products consumed. In India, most milk comes from buffalo, but cows have sacred status for Hindus. Den gemeinsamen fränkischen Wurzeln Mitteleuropas tragen die Aufsätze zum kulturellen Gedächtnis im Mittelalter Rechnung; im Blick der Forschung stehen aber auch konkrete Aspekte der aus dem Karolingerreich entstandenen Einzelnationen. Historische Ereignisse, z. B. die Herrschaft Napoleons oder die beiden Weltkriege im 20. Jahrhundert, stellen schließlich markante Bezugspunkte in den drei genannten Disziplinen dar. "Representing Enslavement and Abolition on Museums"--Which uniquely draws together contributions from academic commentators, museum professionals, community activists and artists who had an involvement with the bicentenary - reflects on the complexity and difficulty of museums' experiences in presenting and interpreting the histories of slavery and abolition, and places these experiences in the broader context of debates over the bicentenary's significance and the lessons to be learnt from it. The history of Britain's role in transatlantic slavery officially become part of the National Curriculum in the UK in 2009; with the bicentenary of 2007, this marks the start of increasing public engagement with what has largely been a "hidden" history. Surprisingly they are under most rapid, and systematic, development in countries in Africa and Asia. In this groundbreaking book Keith Breckenridge traces how the origins of the systems being developed in places like India, Mexico, Nigeria and Ghana can be found in a century-long history of biometric government in South Africa, with the South African experience of centralized fingerprint identification unparalleled in its chronological depth and demographic scope. He shows how empire, and particularly the triangular relationship between India, the Witwatersrand and Britain, established the special South African obsession with biometric government, and shaped the international politics that developed around it for the length of the twentieth century. He also examines the political effects of biometric registration systems, revealing their consequences for the basic workings of the institutions of democracy and authoritarianism

    Abstract: It was common knowledge in early modern England that sexual desire was malleable, and could be increased or decreased by a range of foods - including artichokes, oysters and parsnips. This book argues that these aphrodisiacs were used not simply for sexual pleasure, but, more importantly, to enhance fertility and reproductive success; and that at that time sexual desire and pleasure were felt to be far more intimately connected to conception and fertility than is the case today. It draws on a range of sources to show how, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, aphrodisiacs were recommended for the treatment of infertility, and how men and women utilised them to regulate their fertility. Via themes such as gender, witchcraft and domestic medical practice, it shows that aphrodisiacs were more than just sexual curiosities - they were medicines which operated in a number of different ways unfamiliar now, and their use illuminates popular understandings of sex and reproduction in this period

Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: Constructing Race helps unravel the complicated and intertwined history of race and science in America. Tracy Teslow explores how physical anthropologists in the twentieth century struggled to understand the complexity of human physical and cultural variation, and how their theories were disseminated to the public through art, museum exhibitions, books, and pamphlets. In their attempts to explain the history and nature of human peoples, anthropologists persistently saw both race and culture as critical components. This is at odds with a broadly accepted account that suggests racial science was fully rejected by scientists and the public following World War II. This book offers a corrective, showing that both race and culture informed how anthropologists and the public understood human variation from 1900 through the decades following the war. The book offers new insights into the work of Franz Boas, Ruth Benedict, and Ashley Montagu, as well as less well-known figures, including Harry Shapiro, Gene Weltfish, and Henry Field

    Abstract: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself

    Abstract: In 2008, 140 years after it had annexed Ainu lands, the Japanese government shocked observers by finally recognizing Ainu as an Indigenous people. In this moment of unparalleled political change, it was Uzawa Kanako, a young Ainu activist, who signalled the necessity of moving beyond the historical legacy of "Ainu studies." Mired in a colonial mindset of abject academic practices, Ainu Studies was an umbrella term for an approach that claimed scientific authority vis-à-vis Ainu, who became its research objects. As a result of this legacy, a latent sense of suspicion still hangs over the purposes and intentions of non-Ainu researchers.This major new volume seeks to re-address the role of academic scholarship in Ainu social, cultural, and political affairs. Placing Ainu firmly into current debates over Indigeneity, Beyond Ainu Studies provides a broad yet critical overview of the history and current status of Ainu research.     Abstract: Potts examines the development of nomadism in Iran over the course of three millennia. Evidence of nomadism in prehistory is examined and found insufficient to justify claims of its great antiquity. The background of the earliest nomadic groups, identified as Persian tribes by Herodotus, is examined within the context of the migration of Iranian speakers onto the Iranian plateau in the late second or early first millennium B.C. Thereafter, evidence of nomadic groups in Late Antiquity and early Islamic times is reviewed.

It includes historical and anthropological recapitulation of the phenomenon, but it also tries to describe cultural mechanisms characteristic in the so-called border situations, on a specific example. The shifting configurations of the city's streetscapes have been marked by the ideological frameworks of imperialism, its architecture embedded within the cultural politics of the nation, and its monuments and sculptures mobilized to envision the economic ambitions of the state. This book examines the relationship of Dublin to Ireland's social history through the city's visual culture. Through specific case studies of Dublin's streetscapes, architecture and sculpture and its depiction in literature, photography and cinema, the contributors discuss the significance of visual experiences and representations of the city to our understanding of Irish cultural life, both past and present. Drawing together scholars from across the arts, humanities and social sciences, the collection addresses two emerging themes in Irish studies: the intersection of the city with cultural politics, and the role of the visual in projecting Irish cultural identity. The essays not only ask new questions of existing cultural histories but also identify previously unexplored visual representations of the city. The book's interdisciplinary approach seeks to broaden established understandings of visual culture within Irish studies to incorporate not only visual artefacts, but also textual descriptions and ocular experiences that contribute to how we come to look at, see and experience both Dublin and Ireland

In 20 Länderstudien loten die Autoren aus, wie historische Traditionen, religiöse Prägungen und politische Ordnungen sich auf die Erinnerungsmuster des neuzeitlichen Gefallenenkults auswirken. Trotz vieler Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Ländern treten zwei Gemeinsamkeiten klar hervor: Alle Gefallenen werden politisch in Dienst genommen, um das eigene Staatswesen mit dem Tod der Soldaten zu legitimieren. Zugleich individualisiert sich in allen Nationalstaaten das Gefallenengedenken, das jeden Soldaten einzeln mit seinem Namen und als gleichberechtigten Teil der Nation darstellt. Nur religiöse und revolutionäre Märtyrerkulte sperren sich gegen diese Egalisierungstendenz.

    Abstract: South Sudan became Africa's newest nation in 2011, following decades of armed conflict. Chiefs - or 'traditional authorities' - became a particular focus of attention during the international relief effort and post-war reconstruction and state-building. But 'traditional' authority in South Sudan has been much misunderstood. Institutions of chiefship were created during the colonial period but originated out of a much longer process of dealing with predatory external forces. This book addresses a significant paradox in African studies more widely: if chiefs were the product of colonial states, why have they survived or revived in recent decades? By examining the long-term history of chiefship in the vicinity of three towns, the book also argues for a new approach to the history of towns in South Sudan. Towns have previously been analysed as the loci of alien state power, yet the book demonstrates that these government centres formed an expanding urban frontier, on which people actively sought knowledge and resources of the state. Chiefs mediated relations on and across this frontier, and in the process chiefship became central to constituting both the state and local communities. Cherry Leonardi is a Lecturer in African History at the University of Durham, a former course director of the Rift Valley Institute's Sudan course, and a member of the council of the British Institute in Eastern Africa.     Abstract: Ravensburg war über Jahrhunderte hinweg eine Textilstadt. Die Produktion von Leinwand und dem Baumwollmischgewebe Barchent brachten der Stadt und der gesamten Region Bodensee-Oberschwaben im Spätmittelalter Reichtum. Das Gebiet vom Schwarzwald bis zum Lech und von der Schwäbischen Alb bis über den Bodensee nach St. Gallen war im Spätmittelalter eines der wichtigsten Textilreviere Europas. Mit den städtischen Zentren St. Gallen, Konstanz, Ravensburg, Biberach, Ulm und Augsburg bildete die Region ein geschlossenes Wirtschaftsgebiet. In den Städten und auf dem Land schossen tagein tagaus die Webschiffchen durch die Webstühle. Die gesamte ummauerte Reichsstadt Ravensburg war mit Orten, Institutionen und Menschen besiedelt, die Textilien produzierten, veredelten und verkauften. Ihre Erzeugnisse wurden von den süddeutschen Handelsgesellschaften nach ganz Europa exportiert. Durch den Dreißigjährigen Krieg und die Entstehung neuer Textilreviere verlor Ravensburg während der frühen Neuzeit an Bedeutung. Die Stadt nahm nur noch eine Zulieferfunktion für die aufstrebende St. Galler Textilwirtschaft ein, die sie mit Garn und Arbeitskräften für die Stickerei versorgte. Während des 19. Jahrhunderts erlebte die Textilwirtschaft in Süddeutschland eine Renaissance. Sie wurde zum Leitsektor der frühen Industrialisierung. In Ravensburg entstanden mechanisierte Webereien, Spinnereien und Stickereien. Durch die Globalisierung fand die Textilproduktion im 20. Jahrhundert ein jähes Ende und die Tradition Ravensburgs als Textilstandort wurde endgültig begraben
