    Abstract: Der Orient ist als kulturelle Antithese eine Projektionsfläche europäischer Denkweisen und Phantasmen. Besonders in der französischen und frankophonen Literatur und Kunst ist er seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein allgegenwärtiges Thema. Die Beiträge des Bandes machen diese Konstruktionen des Orients in ihrer Komplementarität und in der medialen Differenz von bildender Kunst und Literatur sichtbar. Als ein interdisziplinärer Beitrag zur Orientalismus-Debatte werden die literarischen und künstlerischen Werke des sogenannten Orientalismus nicht länger einer versatzstückhaften Ideologiekritik durch Wissenschaft unterzogen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, dass einem Teil dieser Werke die Dekonstruktion des Orients als ästhetische Praxis bereits selbst eingeschrieben ist
    Abstract: As a cultural antithesis, the Orient is a site of projections for European mind-sets and fantasies. Since the 19th century, it has been an omnipresent subject, particularly in francophone literature and art. The contributions to this volume uncover these constructions of the Orient in their complementarity and their different manifestations in visual art and literature. As an interdisciplinary contribution to the orientalism debate, the literary and artistic works of so-called orientalism are no longer subjected to a stock critique of ideology through scholarship. Rather, we are shown that many of these books are already engaged in the act of deconstructing the Orient as an aesthetic practice

Die Erzählungen verschleierter Frauen machen deutlich, dass sie sich in ihrer Art und Weise, Familie und Beruf zu vereinbaren, nicht wesentlich von anderen Frauen unterscheiden. Die rassistische Produktion von Andersheit wird so als eine soziale Praxis und strukturelle Dimension moderner Gesellschaften erkennbar
    Abstract: The stereotypical stigmatization of the headscarf is a practice of anti-muslim racism. On the basis of qualitative interview data, Florian Kreutzer reveals daily practices of racist discrimination, of 'doing race' and racial othering - and likewise the practices and possibilities of undoing race, of crossing out, undermining, overcoming and undoing the racist production of alterity. The stories about veiled women make it clear that in the ways that they combine family and work, that they cannot be essentially distinguished from other women. The racist production of alterity becomes recognizable as a social practice and structural dimension of modern societies

Wie jedoch wirken sich diese negativen Stereotype auf das Alltagsleben und die Identitätskonstruktionen der Betroffenen aus? Am Beispiel deutsch-marokkanischer Interviewpartner_innen weist Maike Didero nach, dass divergierende Reaktionen auf das deutsche Islambild durch unterschiedliche translokale Positionierungen erklärt werden können. Ihre Studie präsentiert auf Grundlage der Subjekttheorien von Laclau/Mouffe, Butler und Bourdieu ein innovatives Konzept zur Analyse von narrativen Identitäten als performative Praxis
    Abstract: From 9/11 to the Sarrazin debate: that German Muslims are now confronted with a negative image is evident. Maike Didero asks how these negative stereotypes affect the everyday life and identity construction of those involved. Using the example of German-Moroccan interviewees, she shows that divergent reactions are due to different trans-local positioning. Yet the notion of culture is commonly restricted to conceptual frames of multiculturalism where it relates to group identities, collective ways of life and recognition. Die konkrete Ausgestaltung von Zeitordnungen ist Inhalt vielfältiger sozialer, politischer und religiöser Aushandlungsprozesse. Roman Loimeier beleuchtet die Entwicklung der islamischen Zeitlandschaft Sansibar im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und zeigt, dass Konflikte um die »rechte Zeit« in islamischen Gesellschaften eine besondere Dynamik aufweisen, beispielsweise bei der Frage der Sichtung des Mondes und der Festlegung islamischer Festtage: Muslimische Gemeinschaften sind ausgeprägte Zeitgemeinschaften. Auseinandersetzungen um die »rechte Zeit« sind daher elementarer Bestandteil des gesellschaftlichen Lebens.Das Buch zeigt, dass mit der Einführung der Uhrzeit im späten 19. Jahrhundert und mit ihrer Durchsetzung im Lebensalltag Sansibars im 20. Jahrhundert die Diskussionen um die »rechte Zeit« eine zusätzliche Dimension erhalten haben.     Abstract: Seit jeher zählt es zu den Gewissheiten des politischen Diskurses, dass die Integration muslimischer Migranten in westliche Gesellschaften durch ihren unterschiedlichen religiösen Hintergrund erschwert oder gar verhindert werde. Die empirische Studie von Halit Öztürk entlarvt diese vermeintliche Gewissheit als Vorurteil und zeigt vielmehr, wie religiöse Partikularität und Differenz den Integrationsprozess sogar befördern, indem die Selbstreflexion der Migranten im Medium des Islam die ideellen Impulse für eine gelingende Sozialität bereitstellt. Diese Publikation gewährt damit auf wissenschaftlicher Basis einen gänzlich anderen Blick auf den Zusammenhang zwischen Islam und Integration. Sie stellt nicht nur einen wertvollen Beitrag zum sozialwissenschaftlichen Verständnis von Integrationsprozessen dar, sondern ist darüber hinaus dazu geeignet, als kritisches Korrektiv in eine festgefahrene und destruktive öffentliche Debatte einzugreifen, die in ihrer Undifferenziertheit der Integration muslimischer Migranten offenbar mehr entgegensteht als deren Glauben

    Abstract: "This book is a study of how multiculturalism interacts with multinationalism, especially within post-devolution Scotland. It gives equal attention to Scotland's largest 'visible' and 'invisible' minorities: ethnic Pakistanis (almost all of them Muslim) and English immigrants. Rising Scottish self-consciousness could have posed a challenge to both these minorities. But in practice, potential problems have proved themselves to be solutions, integrating rather than alienating." "The book is based in part on large-scale surveys: of Pakistani and English minorities within Scotland, and of the majority populations in Scotland and England. But it is also based on systematic analysis of transcripts of focus-group discussions with minorities revealing the variety of opinion within minorities as well as the contrasts between them.     Abstract: Saints, their places, the rituals of their veneration - the heroes and martyrs they represent or to whom they are often connected with - and the beliefs in their powers have often been described as being counter-thematic to the constructive issues of modern society in our times. However, in the Middle East - and certainly this is true for many other world regions and other world religions - local saints, Jewish, Christian and Islamic, have gained a very ambiguous status in religious movements, political struggles and events of social re-construction. In the case of Islam, perhaps more openly, modernists and fundamentalists alike attempt to abolish or to re-formulate the agenda of venerating the saints. However, at the same time saints and their localities have become a sort of overcharged symbolic incidence in the modern presence of Islam, in politics, in the media and - perhaps on a more hidden ground - in the struggle of ideas. In this volume historians, islamologists, anthropologists and sociologists give a multiple description of the inherent issues of the unhampered continuity of Muslim saints and their significance. With this volume 5, the Yearbook of the Sociology of Islam is linking empirical research on individual saints (including cases from Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Syria and Morocco) with the debates around Islam and modernity.Georg Stauth teaches Sociology at the University of Bielefeld, Germany, and has widely published on Islam and Theory of Modernity

    Abstract: Mit Blick auf die Geschlechterverhältnisse wird der Islam häufig als modernitätsfeindliches religiöses und kulturelles System verstanden und einem westlichen Emanzipationsverständnis gegenübergestellt. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes zeigen, wie unverzichtbar differenzierende und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven sind, die sich auf die Vielfalt des Islam (auch in Europa), seine unterschiedlichen religiösen Strömungen, Lebensformen und Vorstellungen von Geschlechterordnungen richten.Diskutiert wird die Beziehung zwischen Islam, Geschlecht und Menschenrechten. Dabei kommt das Potenzial der reform-islamischen Ansätze zur Sprache, die nicht nur eine Herausforderung für die politischen Richtungen des Islam darstellen, sondern sich auch am Konzept der Gleichheit bei der Auslegung des islamischen Rechts im Hinblick auf die Geschlechterverhältnisse orientieren

    Abstract: Der Islam kann in der westlichen Diaspora spezifische Möglichkeiten der Konstitution moderner Individualität eröffnen: Wie diese unter Gemeindemitgliedern in Bremen durchgeführte Studie zeigt, begreifen muslimische Jugendliche in Deutschland den Islam zunehmend als Religion in einem säkularen Kontext. Damit stellen sie ihn in einen Wertekanon, der seit der europäischen Aufklärung zur Zivilreligion gewachsen ist. Den Jugendlichen türkischer Herkunft bieten sich dadurch Möglichkeiten, das Stigma des Ausländers abzustreifen und durch die bewusst gelebte Zugehörigkeit zum Islam - durch Konzepte islamischer Lebensführung - Zugang zu gesamtgesellschaftlichen Diskursen zu erlangen.Die Studie vermittelt tiefe Einblicke in die Selbstbilder und die Lebenslagen junger Muslime in der Diaspora

    Abstract: Seit Jahren ist in Deutschland eine zunehmende Islamisierung zu verzeichnen, die als ein Mittel der Aushandlung von Identitäten verstanden werden kann. Ausgehend von biographischen Erzählungen junger Frauen der zweiten Immigrantengeneration, deren Eltern aus verschiedenen islamischen Ländern stammen, zeichnet die Studie von Sigrid Nökel diesen Prozess mit seinen Dynamiken und Mechanismen auf. Auf dieser Basis analysiert sie, wie im Austausch mit einer dominierenden nicht-islamischen Kultur und in der Distanz zu einer traditionellen islamischen Kultur individuelle Prozesse der Konstituierung eines universalistisch orientierten islamischen Selbstes verlaufen

    Abstract: "Based on a wide range of South Slav sources and previously unpublished, often confidential, documents from communist state archives, as well as on the author's own on-the-ground experience, Balkan Idols explores the political role and influence of Serbian Orthodox, Croatian Catholic, and Yugoslav Muslim religious organizations over the course of the last century. Vjekoslav Perica emphatically rejects the notion that a "clash of civilizations" has played a central role in fomenting aggression. He finds no compelling evidence of an upsurge in religious fervor among the general population. Rather, he concludes, the primary religious players in the conflicts have been activist clergy. This activism, Perica argues, allowed the clergy to assume political power without the accountability faced by democratically elected officials."--BOOK JACKET.

    Abstract: Allmählich beginnt man zu erkennen, daß die moderne Wirkungsgeschichte des Islams wie kaum ein anderes Phänomen dazu beigetragen hat, die Grundlagen der westlichen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften in Frage zu stellen. Die vorliegende Textsammlung beobachtet und analysiert diese Prozesse aus mehreren Perspektiven: Erstens nimmt sie die Rückwirkungen und Verunsicherungen in den Blick, die die moderne Beschäftigung mit dem Islam in bezug auf die »eigenen«, abendländischen »fundamentals«, die Wesenszüge des modernen Selbstverständnisses, auslöst. Zweitens widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den Dynamiken und Richtungen der Globalisierung, die das Verhältnis von Islam und europäischer Moderne in Gang setzt. Drittens enthält das Buch einige Untersuchungen zu den sozialen Spannungen, die durch das Aufeinandertreffen von ideologisch politisiertem Islam und überkommener Alltagspraxis vor allem im ländlichen Ägypten entstehen. Dabei werden auch Fragen an die klassische deutsche Islamwissenschaft gestellt. Es wird diskutiert, inwieweit auf sie aufbauend die Probleme des Islams in der modernen, globalisierten Gesellschaft untersucht werden können und entsprechende Forschungsansätze entwickelt

    Abstract: "Various studies have contributed to understanding the changing position and relevance of Muslim women to society. Some tend to focus on traditional reformers of Muslim womanhood, or, concentrate on the post-independence position of Indian Muslim women. There still remains a gap, therefore, as far as understanding the chain of developments which gradually opened up a place for Muslim women in terms of their private and public lives. Indeed, the gradual process of increasing awareness among Indian Muslim women and the movement for their emancipation did not occur accidentally or by chance, but rather it was a historical process achieved through different stages. Without knowing these chains of development, it remains difficult to examine how Muslim society in general and Muslim women in particular responded to these changes and challenges during the decades leading to independence and the creation of Pakistan." "This book, therefore, seeks to fill the gap identified above as well as to offer some thoughts on the emergence of 'feminism' among Indian Muslim women. It does this by focusing on various kinds of 'spaces' in which Muslim women were increasingly able to participate in the public sphere, created in large part by changes emanating from the impact of the colonial state. Through the use of the term 'feminism' this study acknowledges its growing popularity in the Indian subcontinent during the period under discussion, albeit among growing Indian middle classes."--BOOK JACKET.
