    Kurzfassung: Nieuw in Nederland: Feesten en rituelen in verandering levert een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigranten, cultuur en nationalisme. Het boek stelt het idee ter discussie dat in Nederland migrantenculturen bestaan met elk hun eigen traditionele feesten en rituelen. De onderliggende aanname dat migranten vastomlijnde gemeenschappen met eigen culturen vormen, wordt aan de hand van etnografisch onderzoek weerlegd. In het boek staan feesten en rituelen centraal die in Nederland zijn ontstaan als gevolg van de komst van nieuwe Nederlanders: van een doop in een Ghanese pinksterkerk tot het multiculturele evenement Kwakoe. Anders dan vanuit een conventioneel perspectief, waarin deze vieringen als onderdeel van en behorende tot culturen van migranten worden gezien, laten de bijdragen zien dat deze vieringen voortkomen uit onze Nederlandse samenleving als geheel. Vieringen van nieuwe Nederlanders blijken een hybride waarin de Nederlandse geschiedenis even bepalend is als de tradities in het land van oorsprong. Feesten en rituelen lijken weliswaar stabiel, maar zijn voortdurend in verandering. Onder de noemer 'nieuwe Nederlandsheid' schetst Nieuw in Nederland niet zozeer een portret van immigrantenculturen, maar van cultuur in Nederland.

    Kurzfassung: This remarkable work is an academic and personal journey into Albania’s post-communist society, examining the links between internal and international migration in one of Europe’s poorest countries. Starting from a cluster of villages in south-east Albania, the author follows rural migrants to their native urban destinations within the country, such as Korçë and Tirana, as well as abroad to Thessaloniki, Greece. Migrants’ lives, experiences and feelings are captured through 150 in-depth interviews, a number of group discussions and ethnographic observations. This rich empirical material is analysed with reference to an extensive body of literature in Albania and worldwide. The author’s own experience as a migrant and reflections as a researcher studying her own origin communities add valuable insights. The theoretical notion of intra- and transnational social fields demonstrates how complex the links between internal and international migration are, especially from a development perspective, highlighting their effect on the lives of migrants, their families, communities of origin and country.
    Kurzfassung: Dit boek is een academische en persoonlijke reis naar het postcommunistisch Albanië om inzicht te krijgen in de relatie tussen de interne en internationale migratie en hun invloed op de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling. De auteur volgt de trek van dorpelingen naar steden in het binnenland en buitenland. Door middel van aanzienlijke diepte-interviews, reeks groepsgesprekken en etnografische opmerkingen wordt hun leefomgeving in kaart gebracht. Deze multi-sited, multidisciplinaire en multiniveau benadering maakt onderzoek naar beide migratiesoorten, als onderling verbonden en sociaal ingebedde processen, mogelijk. Zij laat zien hoe deze verwevenheid aanzienlijk invloed uitoefent op de levens van migranten, hun families, hun gemeenschap van herkomst en het land.

    Kurzfassung: Controversies and problems with regard to language policy and language education still exist in Malaysia. Despite the attempts of language policy makers to promote multilingualism, the implementation has been marred by political and religious affiliations. Malaysia is a melting pot of many different cultures and ethnicities, the three largest being Malay, Chinese and Indian. Therefore, an analysis of the language variation in this polyglot nation will help in understanding the variety of languages and those who speak them. This book gathers the work of researchers working in the field of language change in Malaysia for over two decades. As there is no book published internationally on the language policy in Malaysia and the effects on the language change in urban migrant populations, this book is a timely contribution not only to an understanding of Malaysian linguistic pluralism and its undercurrents, but also to an understanding of the Indian Diaspora.
    Kurzfassung: Maleisië is een smeltkroes van veel verschillende culturen en bevolkingsgroepen, waarvan Maleisiërs, Chinezen en Indiase immigranten de drie belangrijkste groepen vormen. Ondanks diverse pogingen van de overheid om meertaligheid te bevorderen, bestaan in Maleisië nog steeds controverses als het gaat om taal- en educatiebeleid. Bovendien beïnvloedt de politieke en religieuze samenstelling de uitvoering. Dit boek is het enige internationaal gepubliceerde onderzoek naar taalbeleid in Maleisië en de gevolgen van taalverandering in stedelijke migrantenpopulaties.

    Kurzfassung: The nine essays of this volume, spanning from the eighteenth to mid-twentieth century, highlight the workings of, and reactions to, colonial domination in Asian contexts. The scholars, which include Victoria Haskins of the University of Newscastle, use a range of social science history methods to explore new paths to colonial history. How were individuals, groups, and social categories able to order their lives in the face of the implementation of external dominance? In other words, what was the agency enabling them to interact with, adapt to, use, counteract and in the end defeat colonialism? The essays emphasize colonialism as a multifaceted historical phenomenon which has taken a number of mutually incompatible forms. The various texts thus reflect on both the "early" colonialism build on indirect and informal practices, and the later forms marked by a high degree of authoritarian control.
    Kurzfassung: In Responding to the West geven geschiedkundigen en sociologen hun visie op de methodologie en studie van het kolonialisme in Azië als historisch fenomeen. De negen essays geven hiervan een veelzijdig beeld. Ondanks de structurele onderdrukking was kolonialisme geen kwestie van eenrichtingsverkeer. De studie ervan vereist dan ook een grondige analyse van de continu veranderende verhoudingen tussen kolonisten en gekoloniseerden. Met Responding to the West wordt alvast een voorzet gegeven.

    Kurzfassung: Most literature on the economic crisis in indonesia has focused on the negative macro-economic impacts during the "crisis- years" of 1997-99. The case studies presented in this book take a different perspective. With a longitudinal research perspective, this comparative study analyses a wide variety of responses to the crisis among communities and households. The case studies in this book cover the coping and adapting mechanisms of rural households under a variety of resource use practices and resource use regulations in different areas of Indonesia.
    Kurzfassung: De meeste literatuur over de economische crisis in Indonesië richt zich vooral op de negatieve macro-economische effecten tijdens de hoogtijdagen van de crisis (1997-1999). De case-studies in dit boek beslaan niet alleen een langere periode, er worden ook diepteanalyses gemaakt van een verscheidenheid aan reponse- en bestaansstrategieën van huishoudens en rurale gemeenschappen tijdens en na de crisis. Pessimistische aannames ten aanzien van de weinig effectieve vooronderstellingen worden in dit boek tegengesproken. Het boek levert daardoor een bijdrage aan een effectiever beleid om gemeenschappen in crisissituaties weerbaarder te maken.

The relevance of immigrant organisations for both the host society and the immigrants themselves has been effectively demonstrated in many different studies. However, the question why immigrant organisations emerge and why they often persist over a long period is not adequately answered. In this study a comparative approach is used to reveal the structural determinants of the immigrant organising process. Different theoretical perspectives are combined (immigration model, social movement theory and the organisational ecology model). It is this combination of models, which has not yet been done by other scholars, which determines the value of this study and the contribution to a better understanding of the immigrant organising process. A comparative method is used, analysing Turkish organisations in Amsterdam and Berlin and Surinamese organisations in Amsterdam (1960-2000), to explain the way in which the three explanatory models can be combined in one coherent explanation.

    Kurzfassung: A fundamental issue in society today, migration has been undergoing a new dynamic transformation, calling for new policy approaches. This new dynamic is not yet understood clearly, let alone that adequate policy answers for 'the managing' of these new migration processes and the consequences for receiving and sending societies are within. This comprehensive overview of migration research conducted throughout the IMISCoe network of European research analyses the influx of various types of immigrants in Western Europe post World War II, mostly to large cities, as well as the reactions of the native populations and governments to the changes and pressures brought about by immigration.
    Kurzfassung: Internationale migratie en integratie zijn hete hangijzers in Europa. Het aantal migranten is de afgelopen decennia toegenomen, maar ook het fenomeen migratie zelf is veranderd, evenals de ontvangende samenlevingen en de landen van herkomst. De nieuwe dynamiek die deze veranderingen tot gevolg hebben wordt nog niet begrepen, laat staan dat de politiek adequate antwoorden heeft op de nieuwe vragen. In deze publicatie wordt een overzicht gepresenteerd van het IMISCoe onderzoek en wordt de lijn uitgezet voor toekomstig onderzoek. Hierbij worden cruciale vragen beantwoord die opkomen in het tijdperk van globalisering. Waarom zijn het Westen, en dan met name de grote westerse steden, zo aantrekkelijk voor verschillende soorten immigranten? Hoe hebben staten en samenlevingen gereageerd op de combinatie van interne, sociale, economische en politieke veranderingen, globalisering en de groeiende internationale migratie? En op welke manier is deze reactie op zijn beurt van invloed op migratie- en vestigingsprocessen?

    Kurzfassung: Why do some migrants integrate quickly, while others become long-term minorities? What is the role of the state in the settlement process? To what extent are experiences in the past different from the present? Are the recent migrants really integrating in another way than those in the past? Is Islam indeed an obstacle to integration? These are some of the burning questions, which dominate the current politicized debate on immigration in Western Europe. In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration. The chapters in the book both look at specific groups in various periods, but also analyses the structure of the state, churches unions and other important organized actors in Western European nation states.     Kurzfassung: De laatste jaren worden vragen gesteld bij het integratieproces van migranten. Nieuwkomers zouden tegenwoordig 'slechter' en 'langzamer' integreren dan in het verleden. Het besef dat West-Europa altijd al immigratie heeft gekend is nauwelijks doorgedrongen tot politici en sociale wetenschappers. Bijgevolg ontbreekt - anders dan in de VS - een discussie over verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen vroegere en hedendaagse integratieprocessen. In Paths of Integration vergelijken gerenommeerde onderzoekers integratieprocessen in het heden en het verleden en sluiten daarmee aan bij het recente Amerikaanse debat tussen historici, sociologen, antropologen en politieke wetenschappers. Verder identificeren de auteurs de factoren die ten grondslag liggen aan het integratieproces van migranten en de maatschappelijke veranderingen ten gevolge van migratie. De verschillende hoofdstukken richten zich op specifieke migrantengroepen in verschillende perioden (zoals Italianen en Algerijnen in Frankrijk, Polen in Duitsland, moslims in Nederland en Caraïbische migranten in Frankrijk en het Verenigd Koninkrijk) en bieden een analyse van de staatsstructuur, kerkgenootschappen en andere belangrijke organisaties en instituties in de westerse natiestaten. Ondanks de huidige opvatting dat migranten tegenwoordig minder snel zouden integreren, laten de auteurs overtuigend zien dat er meer overeenkomsten dan verschillen zijn tussen vroeger en nu dan doorgaans wordt gedacht. Tegelijkertijd identificeren zij in de conclusie van het boek een aantal belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de moderne tijd, die het integratieproces compliceren.
