Im Bereich "Gender/Neue Medien" wird in diesem Band beispielhaft gezeigt, dass es nicht mehr darum gehen kann, die Bedeutung der Kategorie Geschlecht in altbekannter differenztheoretischer Weise zu verwenden. Die aktuelle Genderforschung steht so vor einem methodologischen Problem besonderer Art: Einerseits sind universalisierende Großkategorien wie ‚Frauen'/‚Männer' unter Reifikationsverdacht geraten. Andererseits bleibt die Kategorie Geschlecht für die empirische Genderforschung zur Analyse der Wirklichkeit unerlässlich. Wie kann methodologisch dem Dilemma begegnet werden, der Bedeutung der Kategorie Geschlecht auf die Spur zu kommen, ohne theoretische Vorannahmen in die empirische Untersuchung hineinzutragen? Der vorliegende Band beinhaltet neben gender- und forschungstheoretischen Beiträgen empirische Untersuchungen aus den Bereichen Jugend-, Schul- und Unterrichtsforschung sowie Internet- und Queerforschung. Sie alle folgen einer re- oder dekonstruierenden Perspektive und sind darauf gerichtet, Wege aufzuzeigen, wie das Problem der Essentialisierung und Fortschreibung gesellschaftlicher Normen von Zweigeschlechtlichkeit und Heterosexualität überwunden werden kann.     Note: Dass Deutschland ein Einwanderungsland ist, gilt inzwischen nicht nur in der Wissenschaft sondern auch in der Politik als unbestrittene Tatsache. Die Konsequenzen der Einwanderung für die beteiligten Personen in der Aufnahmegesellschaft - Einheimische und Zuwanderer - sind Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit: In einem ersten Schritt wird die Entstehung und Verfestigung von sozialer Distanz bei den Einheimischen analysiert. Ursächlich für deren Reaktion sind die Angst vor kultureller Überfremdung und die Abwehr von Konkurrenz um begehrte, aber knappe gesellschaftliche Ressourcen. Anschließend wird die Wirkung von sozialer Distanz auf die Eingliederung von Zuwanderern betrachtet. Das Konzept ‚soziale Distanz' erweist sich als überaus fruchtbar, um die Variation der Vorbehalte sowohl gegenüber verschiedenen Zuwanderergruppen in Deutschland als auch innerhalb der deutschen Bevölkerung abzubilden und die Bedeutung der kontextuellen Bedingungen im Eingliederungsprozess aufzudecken

    Note: Das Thema der demografischen Krise gewinnt zunehmend Raum in öffentlichen Debatten. Niedrige Geburtenraten und immer mehr dauerhaft Kinderlose stellen für unsere Gesellschaft und insbesondere für ihre Sozialsysteme langfristig eine große Herausforderung dar, für die noch keine Lösung gefunden ist. Zu wenig sind aber bisher Hintergründe dafür untersucht worden, dass junge Erwachsene immer später und immer seltener den Übergang in die Elternschaft vollziehen. Dieses Buch liefert einen Beitrag zur Aufklärung dieser Fragestellung, indem das Ineinandergreifen von Handlungsorientierungen und Planungsprozessen bezogen auf die Lebensbereiche Beruf und Familie untersucht wird. Deutlich wird, dass die Familiengründung für junge Frauen und Männer ein erhebliches Planungsproblem darstellt und mit zahlreichen biografischen Unsicherheiten und Ambivalenzen verbunden ist. Die zunehmende Kinderlosigkeit ist nicht die Folge eines grundlegenden normativen Wandels, sondern die Konsequenz wiederholter biografischer Aufschübe. In Abhängigkeit von verschiedenen beruflichen Orientierungen und Chancenstrukturen zeigen sich sehr unterschiedliche Problemkonstellationen bezogen auf die Familiengründung

Aufbauend auf eine theoretische Einordnung des Konstrukts wird eine jugendso-ziologische Untersuchung zur Rolle des Hierarchischen Selbstinteresses bei der Erklärung von Fremdenfeindlichkeit dargestellt. Es zeigt sich, dass als Ursachen von Fremdenfeindlichkeit geltende Variablen - das Geschlecht, der sozioökono-mische Status und der elterliche Erziehungsstil - nicht direkt auf das Ausmaß fremdenfeindlicher Einstellungen bei Jugendlichen wirken, sondern ihr Einfluss über die HSI-Werthaltungen vermittelt wird

Als empirische Basis werden repräsentative Befunde zum Medienumgang von Heranwachsenden aus der Schweiz von den 1970er-Jahren bis zur Jahrtausendwende vorgestellt und Vergleiche zu internationalen Daten gezogen. Aus dem Vergleich der Mediensozialisation von drei Generationen werden Konstanten und Wandel herausgearbeitet. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem UBS-Habilitationspreis der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Zürich ausgezeichnet

Der darin entwickelte Ansatz zur Erklärung interethnischer Distanzen zeichnet sich vor allem dadurch aus, dass den bislang meist vernachlässigten Einflüssen von Bezugsgruppen und sozialen Milieus großes Gewicht zugemessen wird. Distanzierende Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen gegenüber ethnischen Minderheiten können demnach nicht allein auf individuelle Eigenschaften - etwa auf Bildungsniveau oder autoritäre Persönlichkeitsmerkmale - zurückgeführt werden; entscheidend ist immer auch die Verankerung der Einstellungs- und Verhaltensmuster in persönlichen Netzwerken und sozialen Milieus. Diese Überlegungen werden zu einem Erklärungsmodell ausgearbeitet, das in der Lage ist, verschiedene theoretische Ansätze zu integrieren. Die empirische Überprüfung dieses Modells stützt sich auf eine quantitative Studie, in der auch die persönliche Bezugsumgebung der Akteure sorgfältig erfasst wurde. Das außergewöhnliche Datenmaterial eröffnet wichtige neue Erkenntnisse, die für die wissenschaftliche Forschung ebenso aufschlussreich sind wie für den praktisch-politischen Umgang mit interethnischen Distanzen

Anhand eines systematischen Vergleichs werden im Rahmen einer historischen und einer interaktionstheoretischen Analyse Gemeinsamkeiten, Unterschiede, Beispiele wechselseitiger Beeinflussung sowie Parallelen in der historischen Genese und der alltäglichen Reproduktion von Geschlecht und Ethnie in sozialen Interaktionen herausgearbeitet. Die Arbeit stellt einen ersten Schritt dar auf dem Weg hin zu einer Systematisierung und Theoretisierung der Interferenzen und Wechselwirkungen verschiedener Ungleichheitsdimensionen

Als theoretische Analyseinstrumente werden insbesondere Positionen aus den Cultural Studies, den Postcolonial Studies, feministischen und poststrukturalistisch informierten Diskursen zur Kenntnis genommen. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden die Interviewverläufe selbstreflexiv zum Thema der Analyse gemacht - sie erscheinen als Orte eines andauernden "Kampfes um Bedeutungen", der ständigen Verschiebungen von (kulturellen) Positionen, der interaktiven kulturellen Identitätsarbeit. Bewusst wird vermieden, die Analyse der Interviews in eine Typologie kultureller Identitätsmarkierungen münden zu lassen. Stattdessen gilt die Aufmerksamkeit den subtilen interaktiven Verschachtelungen von Bedeutungen und den Kontexten, in denen sie markiert werden
