Abstract: Wie werden Körper gefährlich?

Abstract: The International Handbook features chapters by leading scholars from around the world in a unique collection exploring the multi-disciplinary field of political ecology. This landmark volume canvasses key developments, topics, issues, debates and concepts showcasing how political ecologists today address pressing social and environmental concerns. Introductory chapters provide an overview of political ecology and the Handbook. Remaining chapters examine five broad themes: issues and approaches; governance and power; knowledge and discourse; method and scale; connections and transformations. Across diverse topics and perspectives, these chapters amount to a wide-ranging survey of current research, making the International Handbook an indispensable reference for scholars and students in political ecology.

Was gehört zu ihren Lebenszielen? Abstract: Materials play a central role in society. Beyond the physical and chemical properties of materials, their cultural properties have often been overlooked in anthropological studies: finished products have been perceived as 'social' yet the materials which comprise them are considered 'raw' or natural'. The Social Life of Materials proposes a new perspective in this interdisciplinary field. Diverting attention from the consumption of objects, the book looks towards the properties of materials and how these exist through many transformations in a variety of cultural contexts. Human societies have always worked with materials. However, the customs and traditions surrounding this differ according to the place, the time and the material itself. Whether or not the material is man-made, materials are defined by social intervention. Today, these constitute one of the most exciting areas of global scientific research and innovation, harboring the potential to act as key vehicles of change in the world. But this 'materials revolution' has complex social implications. Smart materials are designed to anticipate our actions and needs, yet we are increasingly unable to apprehend the composite materials which comprise new products. Bringing together ethnographic studies of cultures from around the world, this collection explores the significance of materials by moving beyond questions of what may be created from them. Instead, the text argues that the materials themselves represent a shifting ground around which relationships, identities and powers are constantly formed and dissolved in the act of making and remaking.

Abstract: From the sports trend of parkour, via the Old Testament, up to the Berlin squatting scene - the different contributions to this volume take up the challenge of rethinking questions about the entanglement of space and gender. Predominant interpretations of current societal phenomena as well as established research topics are examined in order to trace gendered power structures. Thus, resistant moves/tricks (Maschen) and powerful games/acts (Muster) are found in a wide range of topics reaching from observations of performative acts and discourse structures all the way to medial treatments. Introductory comments by Nikita Dhawan, Antje Flüchter, Stephan Günzel, Sabine Hark, and Helga Meise frame the contributions. Abstract: In the 17th and 18th centuries, people, objects, and texts travelled around the world aboard Dutch ships. This book explores how these circulations transformed the knowledge in Asian and European societies. It focuses on epistemic changes in historiography, geography, religion, philosophy as well as in everyday life. Emphasizing transformations, the volume reconstructs semantic shifts of knowledge as well as adjustments to new cultural contexts.

Abstract: Entertainers were the first group of successful women to capture the public eye, taking to the stage in vaudeville and film and redefining their place in society. June Sochen introduces the white, African American, and Latina women who danced on Broadway, fell on bananas in silent films, and wisecracked in smoky clubs, as well as the modern icons of today's movies and popular music. Sochen considers such women as Mae West, Bette Davis, Shirley Temple, Lucille Ball, and Mary Tyler Moore to discover what show business did for them and what they did for the world of entertainment.

Abstract: Myron Weiner's study of the relationship between internal migration and ethnic conflict in India is exceptional for two reasons: it focuses on intercultural and interstate migration throughout the nation, rather than on merely local or provincial phenomena, and it examines both the social and the political consequences of India's interethnic migrations. Professor Weiner examines selected regions of India in which migrants dominate the modern sector of the economy. He describes the forces that lead individual Indian citizens to move from one linguistic-cultural region to another in search of better opportunities, and he attempts to explain their emergence at the top of the occupational hierarchy. In addition, the author provides an account of the ways in which the indigenous ethnic groups ("sons of the soil") attempt to use political power to overcome their fears of economic defeat and cultural subordination by the more enterprising, more highly skilled, better educated migrants. In addressing the fundamental clash between the migrants' claims to equal access to their country and the claims of the local groups to equal treatment and protection by the state, Professor Weiner considers some of the ways in which government policy makers might achieve greater equality among ethnic groups without simultaneously restricting the spatial and social mobility of some of its own people. Abstract: Islamist capital accumulation has split the Turkish bourgeoisie and polarized Turkish society into secular and religious social groupings, giving rise to conflicts between the state and political Islam. By providing a long-term historical perspective on Turkey's economy and its relationship to Islamism, this volume explores how Islamism as a political ideology has been utilized by the conservative bourgeoisie in Turkey, and elsewhere, to establish hegemony over labor. The contributors analyze the relationship between neoliberalism and the political fortunes of the Islamist Justice and Development Party (AKP), and examine the similarities and differences amongst new factions in the secular and Islamic middle class that have benefited economically, socially, and culturally during the AKP's reign. The articles also investigate the impact of the Gulen Movement and the role of the media in shaping the contours of intra-class struggle within contemporary Turkish political and social life.

Abstract: This book explores, for the first time, the turbulent social history of churchyards and cemeteries over the last 150 years. Using sites from across rural North Yorkshire, the text examines the workings of the Burial Acts and discloses the ways in which religious politics framed burial management. It presents an alternative history of burial which questions notions of tradition and modernity, and challenges long-standing assumptions about changing attitudes towards mortality in England. This study diverges from the long-standing tendency to regard the churchyard as inherently 'traditional' and the cemetery as essentially 'modern'. Since 1850, both types of site have been subject to the influence of new expectations that burial space would guarantee family burial and the opportunity for formal commemoration. Although the population in central North Yorkshire declined, demand for burial space rose, meaning that many dozens of churchyards were extended, and forty new cemeteries were laid out.

Abstract: Twenty years since the publication of the Second Edition and more than thirty years since the publication of the original book, Racial Formation in the United States now arrives with each chapter radically revised and rewritten by authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant, but the overall purpose and vision of this classic remains the same: Omi and Winant provide an account of how concepts of race are created and transformed, how they become the focus of political conflict, and how they come to shape and permeate both identities and institutions. The steady journey of the U.S. toward a majority nonwhite population, the ongoing evisceration of the political legacy of the early post-World War II civil rights movement, the initiation of the 'war on terror' with its attendant Islamophobia, the rise of a mass immigrants rights movement, the formulation of race/class/gender 'intersectionality' theories, and the election and reelection of a black President of the United States are some of the many new racial conditions Racial Formation now covers.

Abstract: Gibt es komplexere Dinge als Beziehungen? Warum entstehen in Beziehungen Ambivalenzen und Konflikte? Was ist soziales Kapital?

Abstract: Braucht die Stadtsoziologie einen Perspektivenwechsel?

Abstract: The Handbook of Anti-Semitism compiles the present state of knowledge on the phenomenon of Judaeophobia without limits of time or space. The seventh volume includes nearly 700 entries that survey cultural anti-Semitism in film, theater, literature, and the visual arts. It examines the trope of the "Eternal Jew" as well as "Jud Süß;" it shows how novels, films and artwork were used as vehicles for anti-Semitism.

Abstract: Providers serving older adults face a growing problem. Older adults are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with service quality citing deficits in provider communication and relationship skills. The author argues this dissatisfaction is largely related to three widespread issues: ageism, use of professional jargon, and age-related changes in the older adult. To address these concerns, Dr. Storlie advocates adoption of an evidence-based, person-centered approach to communication. The benefits of person-centered communication are many. They can increase older adult satisfaction with provider services, enhance mutual respect and understanding, improve accuracy of information exchanged, positively impact service outcomes, increase compliance with provider recommendations, and reduce the frustration and stress often experienced by both provider and older adult. Rare to this genre, readers are introduced to several under-explored topics within the field of communication, along with methods for applying concepts from research findings into these topics to enhance the quality of interpersonal communication. Topics include the role of mental imagery in the communication process, the influence of neurocardiology on relationships, and controversial findings from research into quantum physics. The book concludes by highlighting progress made in narrowing the interpersonal communication gap and forecasts how communications-oriented technological advances might improve quality of life for 21st century older adults and the providers who serve them. Utilizing interdisciplinary case studies to illustrate common problematic situations, this book provides detailed exercises that explain how providers can integrate person-centered communication into their practices to improve provider-older adult interactions. Written in a style designed to maximize learning, it...

Abstract: This eBook includes papers discussing facets of and ideas behind the recently-launched master degree course in social foresight at The University of Trento, Italy. The programme includes a mix of theoretical and empirical activities - integrating academic and non-academic skills. The master course is aimed primarily at professionals and officials, both public and private, wishing to acquire new tools to support strategic decisions. Participants in the master course develop the ability to understand the systemic complexity of contemporary society and acquire a variety of tools - formal and informal - to understand social dynamics and develop robust strategies in situations of uncertainty. The master course's aim is to help participants to connect together different forms of expertise, including futures studies, social sciences, psychology, system theory, complexity theory and statistics. According to the distinction among the three levels of forecast, traditional futures studies (or foresight 1.0) and the discipline of anticipation (or foresight 2.0), the master programme is solidly grounded on the first two levels with some references to the third one. Perhaps differently from most of the other future-based masters worldwide, the Trento course includes systematic exposure to the relevant contributions of the human and social sciences (including psychology of decisions, social change, values, and secondary analysis techniques) together with the exploitation of formal frameworks (not only statistics, but also system theory and simulation). While the future is open and remains structurally open, it is important to understand the propensities that natural and social forces induce in the operational environment of decision-makers. The current trends may continue undisturbed or they may deflect in different directions, for both internal and external...
Abstract: reasons (environmental, economic, political, technological, cultural, legal, etc.). Moreover, new forces can always emerge and radically change the context. When there is not enough information to extrapolate time series, build models or simulations (for lack of time or for other more substantive reasons), one must use other methods to 'see' possible futures. Identification of a multiplicity of possible futures has the purpose of opening and making more flexible the mental patterns of decision-makers. Because often not explicit cultural assumptions and professional values restrict the scope of the choices considered possible, reasonable or appropriate, deeper awareness of these assumptions helps broaden the perspective on the choices and their consequences for individuals, communities, organizations and institutions.

Abstract: The papers in this special issue critique and expand Kerlin's (2013) macro-institutional framework for conceptualizing social enterprise to better capture the nuances and dynamic nature of social enterprise country models. Social enterprises, though spanning the boundaries between the nonprofit and business sectors in their immediate organizations, are also shaped by sector-spanning macro-level institutions in their different contexts. The five papers in this issue offer quantitative and qualitative studies that identify differing norms, pressures, and logics of these institutions in different settings. These insights reinforce and inform an expansion of Kerlin's (2013) macro-institutional framework that leads to a more accurate understanding of social enterprise formation and operation in various country contexts and thus improved practical guidance for the support, development, and transfer of social enterprise.

Abstract: Refugees are forced to gamble with their lives to flee conflicts, and if they arrive at their intended destination unscathed, they may face the turbulent prospect of asylum defined by a meagre existence, social exclusion, poverty, and even homelessness.Operating at different scales and imagined places, homelessness and asylum seeking are issues of fundamental social justice typically viewed as a problem of cities and crises of national and international concern respectively. However, over the past two decades in particular, the increasing and volatile numbers of asylum seekers arriving in the West have created a new form of homelessness, mainly hidden, often vulnerable, and located in the interstices of international and local displacement. Considering refugee settlement in London, England, and Toronto, Canada, this book argues that this new form of homelessness also requires a new perspective in order to be properly understood, and this perspective should come from refugees themselves. Two main questions are considered: "How do refugees conceive, locate, and reconstruct 'home' in the asylum and settlement process?" and "How do national and residential dynamics affect refugees' sense of home or homelessness?" Drawing on structuration theory amongst other ideas, the book examines the relationship between "refugeeness" and homelessness, and how each is shaped in the countries of asylum. Managed migration strategies in Canada and deterrent migration strategies in the UK have a profound effect on refugees' perceptions of belonging and acceptance, equality, and the desire and ability to make a home for themselves. In addition to shaping notions of belonging, national support and services (or the lack thereof) structure the pathways to homelessness, revealing distinct trajectories amongst refugees in London and Toronto. The author's proceeds from the...

Abstract: This summary of recent research in neuroeconomics aims to explain how and why a person can sometimes be generous, helpful, and cooperative, yet other times behave in a self-interested and/or exploitative manner. The book explains a dual process of analysis measuring immediate needs of the individual, relative to long term gains possible through prosocial behavior (e.g. synergy, accumulating profits, (in)direct reciprocity) with the output further mitigated by the motivation of the individual at that moment and any special circumstances of the environment. Ultimately it can be shown that prosocial behavior can be economically rational. Yet even when individuals are intrinsically motivated to act prosocially, they are also able to reverse this behavior when they sense it is no longer adaptive. The book will further explore individual differences in prosocial behavior, the development of prosocial behavior, and how a personal neural signature forms that facilitates or hampers cooperation. Abstract: Students of the Enlightenment have long assumed that the major movement towards atheism in the Ancien Régime was centered in the circle of intellectuals who met at the home of Baron d'Holbach during the last half of the eighteenth century. This major critical study shows, contrary to the accepted views, that in fact, atheism was not the common bond of a majority of the members and that, far from being alienated figures, most of the members were privileged and publicly successful citizens devoted to peaceful and gradual reform. Alan Charles Kors determines the coterie's membership and discovers it to have been a diverse assemblage of philosophes, men of letters, and scientists. Analyzing the thought and behavior of those members who lived past 1789, the author argues that the hostility to the Revolution expressed by the coterie's survivors was fully consistent with their world view. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Abstract: The trickster character is prominent in the cultural, particularly narrative, traditions of many different peoples throughout the world. Comic and serious, stupid and clever, benevolent and evil, winner and loser, the trickster is a study in contradictions. The trickster cannot be pigeonholed, for he does not fit into any neat categories or definitions. This study, first published in 1994, aims to give the reader the opportunity to experience in some small measure the dynamic and exciting dramatic oral narrative performances of the Ewe people of West Africa.
