Abstract: Abstract: This chapter examines transnationalism in migration studies. First, we investigate the initial conceptualizations of the transnational perspective on migration and efforts at systematization. Second, we evaluate the discussions around contentious issues regarding past vs. present transnationalism, the extent of transnationalism among migrants, and transnationalism, globalization, states and politics. We outline a typology of transnationalism in which transnational social spaces are differentiated according to the internal characteristics of group organization and the extent of common or shared values and symbols. Third, we examine methodological notes on transnational research where we assess the term transnationality. We identify multiple research techniques used in transnational studies and conclude that nowadays mixed methods research is on the rise. Finally, we offer some venues for further research through a transnational optic where the focus should be on changing boundaries

Abstract: Abstract: This paper provides detailed information about qualitative sampling for the "Transnational Mobility and Social Positions in the European Union" project. The sampling strategy is based on the SOEP-IAB Migration Sample survey. It is part of a sequential research design that uses various quantitative and qualitative methods to study the effect of spatial mobility on social positions and the role of social comparisons in determining how cross-nationally mobile people perceive their social positions. We describe how the quantitative part of the survey was used to create contrast groups that show different intersections of spatial mobility and social position as measured by the Erikson-Goldthorpe-Portocarero (EGP) scheme. In addition, we provide an overview of the main characteristics of these contrast groups. The section on outlook outlines further steps in this project and discusses the strategies used and the challenges faced in this mixed-methods research project

Abstract: Abstract: Since the notable increase of asylum seekers in Germany in 2015, volunteers in civil society organisations (CSOs) have come to play an increasingly important role in the provision of social services and support structures for refugees in the country. By framing volunteers’ activities in the field of social support as practices of care and by linking these activities theoretically to acts of citizenship, the paper discusses whether and how CSOs and volunteers are able to challenge hegemonic discourses and practices of citizenship and migrants' rights. The paper is based on an on-going, qualitative study in a city in Germany, involving different CSOs and volunteers. Findings include that volunteers' activities done on behalf of asylum seekers may further the constant enacting of rights and citizenship through practice on the local level - even if volunteers' and CSOs original intentions are not necessarily geared towards this end

Abstract: Abstract: This study focuses on the importance of reciprocity in migrants’ protective social networks. It uses Marshall Sahlins’ concepts of generalized, balanced, and unbalanced (negative) reciprocity for empirical analysis of different logics of distribution of social protection. The findings are based on a sample of migrants from Kazakhstan and Poland who are living in Germany. The study was conducted using a convergent parallel mixed-methods approach that involves different types of data (from interviews and egocentric networks) and different methods of data analysis. Abstract: Abstract: The frequency and intensity of natural disasters from climate events have been increasing in the last few years. While scientists are careful in causally linking these natural disasters to climate change, the record-breaking extreme climate events such as typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines speak for itself. Formerly a laggard in climate talks, adaptation has now gained footing not just in the UNFCCC but also among different countries. Decision 1/CP.16 also known as The Cancun Agreements invites all parties to the UNFCCC to enhance action on adaptation and undertake measures with regard to climate change induced displacement and migration. It is exactly this COP decision, which motivated the governments of Norway and Switzerland to establish the Nansen Initiative and craft a protection agenda for people who are at risk of disaster-induced cross-border displacement. Abstract: Abstract: Male au pairs responding to the "call for more men" in private and professional childcare have gained some popularity in recent years. Au pairs, both male and female, are positioned in hybrid work settings in that they not only perform housework and provide childcare, but living with families also assume roles of family members. Drawing on the concept of "doing gender", the article compares how the position of male and female au pairs is constructed by allocating specific duties to them, and how men's suitability for au pairing is legitimized. It is shown that, because a gendered division of family work continues to be the prerequisite for "doing gender", male au pairs perform only housework that is compatible with hegemonic masculinity, and that this is inherent in their main duty of functioning as male role models to aid in the socialization of the families' children when the children's fathers fail to fulfill this role

Once again, immigrants contribute to the wealth of the German nation. The current perception of migration in the German media tends to the fact that there is a close link between economic productivity and the integration into society. Being a good migrant is characterized by being an economically productive individual. This is represented in German media discourse with the label "the new guest workers". Abstract: Abstract: Using unique data collected from October to December 2012, we estimate the link between commuting to and from work and the level of household exposure to floods. The result suggests an empirical puzzle - individuals affected by only one flood are roughly 10% more likely to engage in the commuting activity, whereas households affected by two floods are 13% less likely to do so. We check the robustness of this result by operationalizing the past exposure to floods with variables that describe the geographical location of the house and its characteristics. We explain the puzzle by the fact that individuals commute to work in order to accumulate resources to decrease the household's vulnerability to flood risk, amongst other reasons. When the flood risk is high, some households out-migrate, and stayers commute less, probably, for similar reasons as why they stay. Further, we find evidence in support of the "network effect" hypothesis - an individual with an active commuter in the house

Lediglich wenn es um die Feminisierung von Migration oder Frauen als Zielgruppe von Entwicklungszusammenarbeit geht, gibt es Ansätze in diesem Bereich. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden die aktuellen Gender-, Migrations- und Entwicklungsdiskurse analysiert, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf den Heimatüberweisungen liegt. Die Autorinnen machen dabei auf die Bedeutung der Genderaspekte zur Strukturierung von Migrations- und Entwicklungsprozessen aufmerksam. Es wird deutlich, dass in der nationalen und internationalen Forschung stereotype Bilder von Frauen vorherrschen und reproduziert werden. Frauen sind demnach die besseren Arbeitskräfte und die verantwortlicheren Menschen, die ihre Familie und Gemeinde unterstützen. Diese Sichtweise führt zu einer Instrumentalisierung von Migrantinnen. Hirschman's scheme of 'exit and voice', long a classic in the study of migration and its political implications, was conceived within the framework of 'methodological nationalism'. However, the rise of migrant transnationalism is eroding the distinction between domestic and foreign actors on which the postulate was based, that exit meant renouncing on voice. Combining theoretical considerations with empirical insights from Latin American migration, this paper calls for a critical reappraisal of Hirschman's scheme. Abstract: Abstract: "Im Kontext der Untersuchung stellte sich die Frage, welche Rolle das kulturelle Kapital und das Habitus für die soziale Mobilität von Personen mit Migrationshintergrund spielt, und inwieweit es ihnen gelingt, zu den sogenannten Werteliten bzw. Exzellenzen zu gehören. Als ein Indikator dieses Prozesses gilt u.a. ihr möglicher Zugang als Wissenschaftler in die universitären Einrichtungen. In diesem Zusammenhang war von Interesse herauszufinden, zu welchen Migrantentypen diese Werteliten gehören: Sind sie Nachkommen der sogenannten 'Gastarbeitergeneration' oder Angehörige der neuen 'postmodernen' Migrantentypen; oder gehören sie vorwiegend zu den akademischen Mobilen, die von den verschiedenen akademischen/ wissenschaftlichen Austauschprogrammen profitieren. Sind diese Exzellenzen immer noch eher ein Bespiel für eine räumliche Mobilität in einem transnationalem Kontext oder sind sie zunehmend auch ein Zeichen von vertikalen und sozialen Mobilitätsprozessen innerhalb der alteingesesse

Abstract: Abstract: "The subject of inquiry of this study is 'gender' within diasporic philanthropy in the discourse on migration and development. The contribution of this paper to the current literature on the migration-development-nexus (MDN) is the questioning of the major assumptions behind the migration-development discourse by challenging its notion of migrant networks as being homogeneous. As it will be shown, the latter perspective does not do justice to the hierarchies and diversities between and within networks. This is demonstrated by a gender analysis of philanthropic migrant organizations. By analyzing the discourse surrounding diasporic philanthropy, I will argue that the MDN leaves out important features - which corroborates the hypothesis of the instrumental appliance of diasporic philanthropy within the MDN, in the interests of the North. Die Autorin zeigt, wie diese Vorstellungen eingebettet sind, lokal ausgehandelt werden und schließlich zur Konstituierung neuer politischer, sozialer und kultureller Räume führen. Geschlecht und Geschlechtbeziehungen sind in diesem Zusammenhang von Bedeutung, weil sie notwendig sind, um die Unterschiedlichkeit der Vorstellungen zu erklären und außerdem um deutlich zu machen, dass Geschlecht ein konstituierender Faktor von Migration ist. Recently, the focus has gone back to the very local rooting of these transnational spaces: Ludger Pries links geographic and sociological aspects by analysing the 'spatial spanning of the social'; Nina Glick Schiller and Ayse çaglar develop a 'theory of locality in migration studies'. In francophone social geography there is a similar research agenda influenced by Gildas Simon and in migration sociology there are growing interests in researching local-global embedding processes, such as Alain Tarrius' 'La mondialisation par le bas' (globalization from below). Inspired by these approaches, I give two empirical examples for localising transnationalism: By researching political and cultural events in a context of migration, I will show how the understanding of a specific event within an urban context can help us to recognize the rooting of transnational networks

Andererseits fällt auf, dass der Anteil von Migranten1 an der Weltbevölkerung im letzten halben Jahrhundert kaum gewachsen ist. Allerdings übersehen beide Perspektiven das soziologisch zentrale Rätsel der relativen Immobilität: Warum gibt es so wenige transnationale Migranten aus den meisten Orten in den sogenannten Entwicklungsländern? Warum gibt es wiederum so viele Migranten aus einigen wenigen Orten des Südens in den Norden? Eine systematische Analyse der Faktoren für Immobilität und Mobilität ergibt, dass wichtige Ressourcen in der Regel lokal gebunden sind (local assets).
