    Abstract: This study addresses the situation of the Sorbs, an indigenous minority living in Lusatia, Germany. Under the overarching rubric of ethnic and nationalist projects, women are usually symbolized as the guardians of culture and language. Women's experiences as subjects in everyday life and in multi-facetted social practices therefore become veiled. The main concern in this book is to discuss how the women who identify themselves as/with Sorbs studied here construct their identities in the modern world, how they approach a sense of self and how they position themselves in their everyday lives, what kind of processes they undergo in their identity construction, and which factors are implicated in the formation of these identities. Investigating the Sorbian minority as the research subject and focusing on the female gender primarily involves intersections of ethnicity and gender, which are the points of departure for this study. As the research progresses, women's gradual active construction of gender and ethnicity while living their everyday lives reveals a construction of multifarious and complex identifications across differences of gender, ethnicity, culture, religion and class. The results of research create Sorbian culture anew, craft Sorbian identity afresh and render the notion of Sorbian women in new terms. New meanings encased in these conceptions actually contain an active and transformative impetus. This thrust forces these ideas to undergo a process of redefinition. It is the life experiences people have in everyday practices that impel us to envisage identity construction as a dynamic, never-ending and open-ended articulation of one's positionings.

    Abstract: There are numerous conflicts ensuing in the Middle East, but not all are being fought with rockets and rifles. While the Internet has proven invaluable to those who wish to uphold a patriarchal society and spread the message of Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim women have used the Web to build a transnational community intent on growing women's rights in the Middle East. There is a large disparity between a Muslim woman's role according to the Qur'an and her role as some corners of Muslim society have interpreted it. In this work the author reveals the creative strategies Muslim women have adopted to quietly fight against those who would limit their growing rights. She examines issues that are important to all women, from routine matters such as daily hygiene and clothing to controversial subjects like abortion, birth control, and virginity. As a woman with linguistic expertise and extensive life experience in both Western and Middle Eastern cultures, she is positioned as an objective observer and reporter of changes and challenges facing Muslim women globally

    Abstract: In the small town of Dogondoutchi, Niger, Malam Awal, a charismatic Sufi preacher, was recruited by local Muslim leaders to denounce the practices of reformist Muslims.     Abstract: Abstract: 'Erstmals erreichen Kohorten lebenslang behinderter Frauen und Männer das Rentenalter, da infolge des Euthanasie-Programms in der NS-Zeit von 1943 bis zum Ende des Regimes im Mai 1945 behinderte Menschen systematisch ermordet wurden. Die Erfahrungen mit älter werdenden und alten behinderten Menschen sind daher noch recht begrenzt. Geschlecht und Alter behalten eine zentrale Bedeutung für die Charakterisierung der Lebenslage behinderter Menschen, eine Mehrfachdiskriminierung behinderter Frauen ist in vielen Lebensbereichen nachweisbar. In der wissenschaftlichen Literatur zeigen sich Forschungsdesiderata: besonders Frauen mit Behinderung im Alter werden noch nicht angemessen wahrgenommen, ihre Problemlagen weitestgehend vernachlässigt, dabei ist evident, dass Benachteiligungen behinderter Frauen (und Mädchen) im Lebensverlauf kumulieren und durch die Betrachtung der Dimension Alter an Stärke zunehmen.     Abstract: Abstract: "Die Veränderung der Rollenbilder von Mann und Frau (nicht generell der tatsächlichen Rollenmuster) und im Zusammenhang damit das Aufbrechen der traditionellen Arbeitsteilung haben auch in der sozialpolitischen Debatte zur Forderung der Stärkung der Erwerbstätigkeit von Frauen und Müttern geführt. Addressing this question, Meena Sharify-Funk encountered women activists and intellectuals in North America, the Middle East, South Asia and Southeast Asia - women whose lives and visions have become linked by 'the transnational' despite their differing circumstances and intellectual backgrounds. Conversely, does feminism need the concept of civil society? This important volume offers both a revised gendered history of civil society and a program for making it more egalitarian in the future. An interdisciplinary group of internationally known authors investigates the relationship between public and private in the discourses and practices of civil societies; the significance of the family for the project of civil society; the relation between civil society, the state, and different forms of citizenship; and the complex connection between civil society, gendered forms of protest and nongovernmental movements. While often critical of historical instantiations of civil society, all the authors nonetheless take seriously the potential inherent in civil society, particularly as it comes to influence global politics. They demand, however, an expansion of both the concept and project of civil society in order to make its political opportunities available to all.

    Abstract: This study examines how the concept of "Korean woman" underwent a radical transformation in Korea's public discourse during the years of Japanese colonialism. Theodore Jun Yoo shows that as women moved out of traditional spheres to occupy new positions outside the home, they encountered the pervasive control of the colonial state, which sought to impose modernity on them. While some Korean women conformed to the dictates of colonial hegemony, others took deliberate pains to distinguish between what was "modern" (e.g., Western outfits) and thus legitimate, and what was "Japanese," and thus illegitimate. Yoo argues that what made the experience of these women unique was the dual confrontation with modernity itself and with Japan as a colonial power.

Oder werden die nachfolgenden Generationen - wie so häufig - von zeitgenössischen Medien hinters Licht geführt? Die vorliegende Studie geht dieser Frage unter Einbeziehung verschiedener Sozialisationsvorgänge wie bspw. der schulischen und außerschulischen Erziehung oder der auf Frauen einwirkenden gesellschaftlichen Normen und Erwartungen nach. Insbesondere soll untersucht werden, inwiefern die Verhaltensmuster, die in der Kindheit und Jugend geformt wurden, auch heute noch nachwirken. Wie stehen die Frauen der HJ-Generation, die durch die Erziehung im BDM geprägt wurden, zur Emanzipationsbewegung der späten 1960er und 1970er Jahre? Wie beurteilen sie die volle weibliche Berufstätigkeit heutiger Generationen? Die Untersuchung wurde auf Basis biographischer Interviews durchgeführt, die die Autorin in Nordfriesland führte. Diese relativ neue Methode der Oral History wird im ersten Teil des Buches anhand einer kurzen Darstellung der theoretischen Grundlagen sozialwissenschaftlicher Befragungen erläutert. Sie bietet abseits der "Großen Geschichte" eine interessante Möglichkeit, Einblick in das "ganz normale Leben" von Zeitzeugen zu gewinnen, und ist damit als Instrument der Erforschung von Alltagsgeschichte aus der aktuellen historischen Forschung nicht mehr wegzudenken.

"A Mother's Work takes a hard look at the unprecedented rise in childlessness that, along with the outsourcing of family care and household production, has helped to alter family life since the 1960s.
