Among pop music fans he is perhaps most famous for producing Michael Jackson's album, Thriller.     Abstract: Examining the culture and politics of the Black Power era of the late 1960s, this book explores the relationship of soul music to the Black Power movement from the vantage point of the musicians and black revolutionaries themselves. The 1960s were a turbulent time for race relations in the United States, but no other area in the country epitomized the radical social change that was taking place more than the San Francisco Bay Area-the epicenter of the Black Panthers movement. This social history introduces fans of soul music and 20th-century U.S. history enthusiasts to the Black Panthers' own band, the Lumpen, a group comprised of rank-and-file members of the Oakland, California-based Party. During their year-long tenure, the Lumpen produced hard-driving rhythm-and-blues that asserted the revolutionary ideology of the Black Panthers. Through his rediscovery of the Lumpen, and based on new interviews with Party and band members, author Rickey Vincent provides an insider's account of Black Power politics and soul music aesthetics in an original narrative that reveals more detail about the Black Revolution than ever before.

    Abstract: Deniza Popova gibt einen umfassenden Einblick in die bulgarische Volksmusik und die Vielfalt ihrer Existenzformen. Durch ihren kulturanthropologischen und soziologischen Ansatz geht diese Studie weit über die musikethnologische Beobachtung und Beschreibung von traditioneller Musik hinaus. Sie hinterfragt die Anbindung und Funktion von Musik sowohl im gesellschaftspolitischen und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Kontext als auch im Identitätskonzept des Einzelnen. So werden die im Titel aufgeführten Begriffe "Authentizität", "Medialität" und "Identität" mit zahlreichen möglichen Definitionen und Verständnissen konfrontiert. Eine aus der etischen Perspektive geschriebene Wissenschaftsgeschichte der bulgarischen Musikethnologie, eine Monographie des rhodopischen Dorfes Dobral#k und zahlreiche Beispiele für die Transformationsbewegungen von "authentischer Musik" in andere musikalische Genres und Funktionsbereiche (z.B. Klassische Musik, professionelle nationale Volksmusik, Musikpädagogik, Laienmusizieren, Festivals und Massenmedien, als Transportmittel für Aussteiger oder zur Reanimation von Ritualen) sind die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit.

    Abstract: Scholars have long known that world music was not merely the globalized product of modern media, but rather that it connected religions, cultures, languages and nations throughout world history. The chapters in this History take readers to foundational historical moments – in Europe, Oceania, China, India, the Muslim world, North and South America – in search of the connections provided by a truly world music. Historically, world music emerged from ritual and religion, labor and life-cycles, which occupy chapters on Native American musicians, religious practices in India and Indonesia, and nationalism in Argentina and Portugal. The contributors critically examine music in cultural encounter and conflict, and as the critical core of scientific theories from the Arabic Middle Ages through the Enlightenment to postmodernism. Overall, the book contains the histories of the music of diverse cultures, which increasingly become the folk, popular and classical music of our own era.
