    Abstract: Abstract: Der vorliegende Text stellt einen Auszug aus dem Buch 'Die Geburtenkrise ist überwindbar: Wider die Anreize zum Verzicht auf Nachkommenschaft' (2004) dar. Der Verfasser fordert unter dem Eindruck der demographischen Alterung der deutschen Gesellschaft eine Renaissance der Familienpolitik mit integrierten bevölkerungspolitischen Elementen in Gestalt einer grundlegenden Neu- und Höherbewertung der Elternschaft und einer Besinnung auf den Eigenwert von Kindern. Er warnt vor einem Trend zur Individualisierung, die ein dauerhaft tragfähiges Miteinander einschließlich ausgeglichenerer demographischer Strukturen nicht sicherstellen könne. Ein Problem der Bevölkerungspolitik sieht er darin, dass sie nicht in die tagespolitische Orientierung des politischen Prozesses passt. In diesem Sinne werden abschließend Perspektiven des Umgangs mit dem massiv eingetretenen Geburtenrückgang formuliert. (ICE2)

    Abstract: This book examines a series of controversies surrounding Israel's use of force and its failure to prevent violence. Influenced by Weber's definition of the state as the 'monopoly of violence', politcial scientists and criminologists alike have focused their attention on the legitimation struggles of non-state actors who resort to violence. This book redresses the balance. Chapters are devoted to the public discourse about Palestinian and Jewish terrorism, the war in Lebanon, the alleged connection between verbal violence of government leaders and the physical violence of its supporters, and the use of history to justify the state use of force. The conclusion considers why these controversies play such a central role in Israeli politics and presents a number of suggestions as to the function they fulfil in other Western societies.

    Abstract: The northern Tuareg (the Tuareg of Algeria) - the nomadic, blue-veiled warlords of the Central Sahara - were finally defeated militarily by the French at the battle of Tit in 1902. Some sixty years later, following Algerian independence in 1962, they were visited by a young English anthropologist, Jeremy Keenan. During the course of seven years, Keenan studied their way of life, the social, political and economic changes that had taken place in their society since traditional, pre-colonial times, and their resistance and adaptation to the modernising forces of the new Algerian state. In 1999, following eight years during which Algeria's Tuareg were effectively isolated from the outside world as a result of Algeria's political crisis, Keenan returned to visit them once again. Following a further four years of study, he has written a series of eight essays that capture the key changes that have occurred amongst Algeria's Tuareg in the forty years since independence.

    Abstract: Yasir Suleiman's 2004 book considers national identity in relation to language, the way in which language can be manipulated to signal political, cultural or even historical difference. As a language with a long-recorded heritage and one spoken by the majority of those in the Middle East in a variety of dialects, Arabic is a particularly appropriate vehicle for such an investigation. It is also a penetrating device for exploring the conflicts of the Middle East, the diversity of its peoples and the diversity of their viewpoints. Suleiman's book offers a wealth of empirical material, and intriguing, often poignant illustrations of antagonisms articulated through pun or double entendre

    Abstract: This book explores how the Internet presents radical ways of organising and producing media that offer political and cultural alternatives, both to ways of doing business and to how we understand the world and our place in it. The book is characterised by in-depth case studies. Topics include the media of new social movements and other radical political organisations (including the far right); websites produced by fans of popular culture; and media dedicated to developing a critical, 'public' journalism.
