Abstract: "This timely book explores how space emerges as people attempt to organize and reorganize their everyday activities. From the workplace to the internet, geographical districts to international development projects, it offers new insights on how created spaces enable further activities as the organizing process evolves. From a poststructuralist perspective, expert contributors look at the importance of agencing for understanding organizing within and among multifarious spaces, which in turn provides a means of explaining how organizing unfolds through combinations of spatio-material and agential practices. Extending this research by highlighting the agential dynamics of organizing in relation to space, this book unpacks the concept of agencing, before considering how relational approaches to space have influenced the idea of spatial agencing. Connecting the work of Michel Callon and Franck Cochoy, Space and Organizing joins a forward-thinking and ever-expanding body of research. As space and society are the result of diverse ongoing activities that enable further organizing to take place, the book concludes that we should abandon the idea of a given space that people inhabit and transform. This book offers a meaningful avenue to rethink how we interact with nature, distribute our activities, and organize our practices. Aimed at business and management researchers, PhD candidates and postgraduate students with a particular interest in organization studies and organizational behaviour, this book offers ways to engage with more positive routes of spatial agencing"--...

Abstract: "Digital transformation continues to accelerate change in all aspects of modern life. This book examines when, where, how, and why artificial intelligence and digital change can boost innovation and transform the economy, society and democracy. It provides a holistic approach to the promotion of the knowledge economy, knowledge society, and knowledge democracy. The book is developed based on the Cyber-D4 nexus, which is a conceptual framework of Cyber-Defense, Cyber-Development, Cyber-Democracy, and Cyber-Diplomacy, and it adopts a Quadruple/Quintuple Innovation Helix (Q2IH) approach. This nexus ties new national and industrial cyber strategies, including business strategies for smart cities and the Internet of Things, with the local, national, regional, and global security and economic objectives. Academics, policy makers, practitioners, researchers and students in combined fields of science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, digital transformation, artificial intelligence and the future of industry will appreciate the lens through which the chapter authors explore both the minutiae and expansive influence of digital transformation"--...

Abstract: "This practical yet cutting-edge Handbook includes both established and innovative methods for studying identity in management, organisations, and cognate fields. Incorporating a breadth of narrative, visual, ethnographic and embodied methods, as well as ways for analysing naturally occurring data, this Handbook offers exciting new interdisciplinary perspectives on the study of identity in and around organisations. Notions of identity have gained much momentum in organisation and management studies over the past 20 years, however, identity scholars tend to rely on a limited set of methods in their research. Looking beyond narrow disciplinary boundaries, the Handbook draws on ideas from management studies, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and the arts. With cutting-edge methods on the various facets and dynamics of identity, it is integral reading for the future progress of reflexive and dialogical social constructions for studying identity. This refreshing Handbook will be valuable to scholars and students from a variety of disciplines including business and management, psychology and sociology, but with a common interest in studying identity in and around organisations. With consistent practical methodology, consultants, facilitators and management practitioners, who aim to develop identities among individuals, groups, and organisations will also benefit widely from this"--...

Abstract: Abstract: Orders and decorations are portable badges and insignia awarded to recognize or reward specific forms of service or meritorious conduct. These objects belong more broadly to the field of phaleristics, which among other things is devoted to the study of the formalized systems of reward in both historical and contemporary societies. Likewise, although they take different forms and can be awarded in a variety of ways by both state and non-state actors, orders and decorations have historically been studied predominantly within the contexts of military institutions and their traditions and cultures.〈br〉In more theoretical terms, they are cultural artefacts which, together with their recipients, have an important role as symbols which can aide in the creation and reinforcement of cultural ideals and values as well as other forms of social stratification. Because of these functions, orders and decorations have been, and continue to be, important symbols of the heroic or specific heroic ideals. Indeed, in some contexts they represent the nexus of such concepts and can become conflated at a definitional level. This can be seen most readily within military structures and cultures, where ‘decorated’ soldiers are often automatically regarded as ‘war heroes’

Abstract: Abstract: In many of its facets, the phenomenon of violence is present in numerous hero narratives: the trial in battle and war for instance can constitute the point of departure for heroization processes; protecting the defenceless against the violence of others can be told in concepts and narratives of heroism; using one’s own body when faced with the threat of expected violence can be rewarded with hero status. Violence, understood as the wilful damaging of the body of another against that individual’s will, is admittedly not a constitutive condition for heroization processes, but it often accompanies them. The willingness to deliberately subject oneself to the violence of others, to endure it passively or to confront it actively is equally a prominent reason for construction processes of the heroic. There is no inherent ontological bond between violence and heroism; however, owing to specific similarities – for instance with regard to their transgressive element, their affective impact, their ambiguous relationship to order and their focus on an identifiable deed – they can be understood as phenomena that are linked to each other through numerous theoretical interfaces. Two central lines of thought proceed from this possible connection between violence and heroism: first, both violence and the heroic call for their legitimation and often find it in references to each other. The heroic thus joins the concepts of ‘violence’ and ‘legitimacy’ and forms with them a tense web of interrelation in which questions as to the reciprocal dependence of the phenomena should be asked. Second, attention can be focused on those involved in violence – perpetrator, victim and audience – and the questions addressed: which agents are heroized; who is doing the heroizing; for which conduct is heroizing happening and which agents can be heroized at all? This also takes into account the observation that heroization processes and experiences of violence are to be understood as historically and culturally contingent phenomena and that a vast number of violent and heroic situations are thus conceivable

Abstract: Abstract: It is tempting to think about ‘singular’ heroes and collectives only in terms of complementary opposites and thus to dismiss the ‘heroic collective’ as a paradox that cannot exist. At the same time, various forms of collectives are in fact associated with semantics of the heroic, and they are by no means exotic exceptions to the rule. Therefore, this article will present a systematic consideration of the question of how to understand the intertwining of singularity and plurality – that is, in their most extreme form, the hero and the masses – that goes beyond the dichotomy of one heroic figure versus the collective of ordinary people. This takes the form of a typology that distinguishes between the collective of heroes, the heroic collective, and collective heroism. The order in which these types are presented is based on the logic of each of these phenomena, namely, the degree to which the identity of the individual disappears behind the collective

Abstract: Abstract: Heroic figures perform their deeds on their own. It is they who decide, who act, and who risk their lives. Hegel wrote that heroes in the ‘heroic age’ were still fully responsible for their deeds. Therefore, for Hegel, there could no longer be heroes in a modern, civil society which is characterised by the division of labour: Numerous members are involved in the course of each event, responsibility is spread, and it is “no longer a matter of individual heroism and the virtue of a single person”. Historically, Hegel’s prognosis has not come true. Even in the so-called ‘post-heroic age’, heroic figures are all around us. However, it remains true for the portrayal of heroes that they are usually shown as lone fighters with sole responsibility. Heroic stories concentrate on one protagonist and they place a strong and active individual figure at their centre. Drive and determination are both essential hallmarks of the hero. It is therefore not surprising that, along with ‘heroic death’ and ‘heroic bravery’, ‘heroic deed’ is one of the few established idioms which comprise ‘hero-’.〈br〉As with the other central features of heroic figures (extraordinariness, transgressiveness, affective and moral charge, and agonality), this analysis aims to show how the traits of heroic agency emerge. Heroic agency is analysed as the result of a ⟶constitutive process.6 Within this process agency is attributed to and concentrated on the respective figure. In order to trace it, we start with a concrete heroic figure (Louis Pasteur) and reconstruct how this trait came about. For this purpose, actor-network theory is applicable and will be introduced as an analytical tool below.〈br〉Actor-network theory – expanded to include approaches from literature and media studies – is used to examine attribution, communication and representation processes through which a person is first made into a hero. Accordingly, the heroic figure represents a ‘real fiction’ which is generated via communication and media, irrespective of whether a real historical person is the starting point or not. If a historical person forms the starting point, the concentration of agency takes place as a historical process, as a history of transmission. However, in the case of fictional representations it can also be examined how the strong agency emerges as a communication and representation effect

Abstract: Abstract: Heroes (and heroines) cross boundaries. They transgress them, thereby drawing attention to themselves and provoking social reactions. Strictly speaking, they cannot yet be called heroes during the act of crossing boundaries because they are only created through a process which begins with the transgression. In the approach discussed here, the focus is thus not on the ‘finished’ hero with his heroic attributes, but rather the various constitutive processes involved in the creation of the hero and his (her) attributes. At the (preliminary) end of the heroization process, the heroic figure appears with his quality of autonomy or transgressiveness. In this sense, the process of transgressing boundaries and thus one of several forms of boundary work which characterize heroizations is analyzed below

Abstract: "This revealing book goes behind the scenes of normative principles of media independence to investigate how that independence is actually practiced and realized in everyday working life. Taking an ethnographically rich journey through European news organizations, Elena Raviola exposes the diverse and complex ways in which the ideal of independence is upheld, and at the same time inevitably betrayed, in the organizational life of media companies. Elena Raviola presents a distinct organizational analysis of media independence throughout the book, offering a close study of three news organizations in Europe - the largest Italian financial newspaper Il Sole-24 Ore, the largest Swedish regional newspaper company Stampen and the French pioneer online-only news website Rue89. In each of them, the implications of digitalization on their practices of independence is explored and analyzed. The book ultimately sheds light on how digital technologies are practically reshaping democratic principles such as media independence, while being embedded in the existing organizational and professional structures of democratic societies. Organizing Independence will enrich the reader's understanding of media independence in practice, beyond the normative principles, and so will be a key reference point for researchers in management and organization studies, media studies and anyone interested in the future of media"--...

Abstract: Recognizing how the lines between digital and traditional forms of entrepreneurship are blurring, this forward-thinking book combines digital technology and entrepreneurship perspectives to advance knowledge on this paradigm-shifting typology of entrepreneurship. Kisito Futonge Nzembayie and Anthony Paul Buckley explore how in the digital age, the micro-level activities of digital entrepreneurs in new venture creation continue to digitally transform and disrupt economic systems at macro-levels. As digital entrepreneurship and other typologies of entrepreneurship in the digital age become increasingly conceptually fuzzy, the book sets out to define the digital entrepreneurship domain; what it is and why it is distinctive and disruptive. It concludes by offering a pragmatic framework for digital entrepreneurship implementation and demonstrates how the authors have put this into practice in their own work. Placing digital entrepreneurship in its conceptual and historical context, the book provides a clear understanding of the mechanisms driving the digital entrepreneurial process and practical tools to help nurture and develop new digital ventures. It will be valuable reading for business scholars and students interested in the role of technology in their field. Business managers and practitioners will also benefit from the book's guidelines and analytical tools.

Abstract: "Discourse-based approaches to studying organizations have grown in significance over the last 25 years. This accessible and insightful book exemplifies how to use a discursive approach to study organizations. By drawing on her own empirical research, Cynthia Hardy aligns key theoretical assumptions with a range of case studies to demonstrate the value and adaptability of a discursive approach. The book presents the key theoretical assumptions associated with a discursive approach and shows how to align them with the design of specific empirical studies. Cynthia Hardy also illustrates how data collection and analysis can be customized to suit the issues under investigation. By reviewing empirical settings that range from older workers to refugees, from businesses to voluntary organizations, from strategy making to inter-organizational collaboration, and from environmental regulation to chemical risk, the author shows the value and adaptability of this approach. Forward-thinking, the book concludes with a look towards the future challenges of the discursive approach, covering specific issues of resistance to and reflexivity in research on discourse. Demonstrating the importance of empirical work, data collection, and analysis, this book will be a useful guide on discursive approach for students of organization and management studies. It will also prove useful for researchers studying HIV-AIDS organizations, refugees and environmental regulation, which are particularly focused on in the book"--...

Abstract: "Offering a comprehensive classification of the analytical approaches to the social within the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship studies, this book showcases a wide variety of perspectives and a collection of theoretical analysis tackling social complexity. The editors bring together contributors who mirror the heterogeneity present in the innovation and entrepreneurship fields, aiming to spark a discussion on the pluralist and critical nature of the social dimension within research, and to examine societal transformation processes and their attending multifaceted issues. Exploring how the social is analytically understood in innovation and entrepreneurship studies, the book proposes a non-exhaustive spectrum ranging from implicit assumption to explicit conceptualization in defining methodological foundations. Discussing the social and methodological challenges involved in the integration of social dimensions, this book will be a crucial companion for innovation and entrepreneurship scholars and students. This book is also a must-read for policy-makers and practitioners involved in societal transformation processes"--...

Abstract: Abstract: We define a community’s orientation towards heroic models as ‘heroism’. Unlike the everyday and, often, also the academic usage of the term, our definition does not describe the sphere of the heroic in general or the exaggeration of heroic forms. Instead, we understand heroism as a heuristic term describing a conventional system of what Pierre Bourdieu calls “internalised patterns” with heroic connotations. By understanding heroism as a “socialised subjectivity”, we are able to relate it to Bourdieu’s concept of the habitus

Abstract: Abstract: We use the terms admiration and adoration to describe emotional and affective dynamics between communities (the admirers or adorers) and heroic figures (the admired or adored). In the act of adoring and admiring, a community positions itself in relation to a figure, expresses its esteem for the hero and/or his deeds and defends him against criticism or deheroization from outsiders. Beyond that, however, adoration and admiration also have a community-forming function because through the medium of the heroized figure the admirers or adorers define themselves as a group, they distinguish themselves from other communities and they compete with other communities for the appropriation and interpretation of the hero figure.〈br〉〈br〉Although the terms admiration and adoration are often used almost synonymously in colloquial situations, we will think of them in this article as distinct phenomena. One of the aims of this article is to determine in some detail how they relate to each other and how they interplay. In general, we define admiration as the reference to specific imitable deeds, qualities or attitudes of a hero, whose imitability or exemplariness are emphasised. By contrast, adoration focuses on the hero figure in its entirety that is deemed exceptional and ‘inimitable’, as well as on the system of meaning associated with the hero figure (even though specific heroic deeds are generally also attributed to the figure, which are viewed as proof of its heroic nature).〈br〉〈br〉This article presents heuristic approaches for understanding admiration and adoration in their significance for heroization processes. To that end, we first describe how hero adoration is a dynamic process of reciprocal affective relations between a heroic figure and its devotees. Then, the combined effect of individual admiration and collectively practiced adoration that is constitutive for heroization processes will be outlined. The respective functions of admiration and adoration in creating that combined effect are not static, however. Rather, they should be understood as elements of a variable and dynamic arrangement that can be configured and functionalised differently depending on the historical and cultural context

Abstract: Abstract: A heroic deed is any kind of action by an actor that is the subject of a heroization process. It is true that there are forms of heroization that are not directed at a specific deed performed by a heroic figure but, for example, at their attitude. In many cases, however, an active or passive action forms the reference point of heroization processes, is represented in the form of a heroic narrative and is interpreted as evidence of the heroic qualities attributed to the person. In this article, the phenomenon of the heroic deed is explained using Max Weber's concept of action and Leo Braudy's model of 'acts of fame'

Abstract: Abstract: Attempts to capture the terms ‘hero(ine)’ and ‘heroic’ in supertemporal and essentialist definitions are rooted in a subliminal need and seem obvious due to the persistence and topicality of the subject. However, heroic properties (and their theoretical analyses) are, as a vast number of studies on the subject shows, specific to a culture, group and era. To date, all-encompassing definitions have not been able to reflect this historicity. Against this background, a heuristic working definition and delimitation of the concept appear sensible and necessary.〈br〉〈br〉The definition of hero(ine) proposed herein is based on an understanding of ‘heroic’ as a culturally constructed, relational and processual phenomenon: hero(in)es substantially contribute to the establishment of collectively potent models of order, are created subject to certain social and historical conditions and are represented in various media. This understanding directs our attention towards the processes of heroization and heroism, i.e., firstly, towards the question of how a real (living or dead) person or a fictional character becomes a hero(ine) of a collective and, secondly, towards the collective guidance from and adoption of conduct considered heroic. Heroization and heroism occur within the framework of communicative processes that serve not only the social functionalisation of the heroic, but also have their own dynamic and creative power

Abstract: "Offering a new and comprehensive overview of important topics and orientations in the anthropological study of economic life, this invigorating third edition of A Handbook of Economic Anthropology addresses key changes in the decade since the previous edition in people's economic lives and environments, as well as in intellectual interest among scholars. The Handbook contains diverse reflections on the economic turmoil of 2008 and the austerity that followed. Containing 35 newly commissioned chapters from important scholars in the field, it covers the nature of work and the changing ways people think about it, as stable jobs give way to short term work and the platform economy, as well as the expansion of the financial sector and efforts to control it. Chapters further explore social reproduction, the maintenance and regeneration of households and social relations over time, as well as the increasing concern with value, morality and ethics, both as things that motivate people and as policy orientations. This will be a critical read for academic anthropologists looking for a state-of-the-art and thorough reference work for this key area of the discipline. Economic sociologists and geographers, as well as heterodox economists will also benefit from the broad range of empirical work and theoretical standpoints explored"--...

Abstract: "This pioneering Handbook offers a state-of-the-art exploration of the social structure of accumulation theory, a leading theory of stages of capitalism, expertly summarising its development to date. It breaks new ground in several areas, including econometric evidence for the theory and developing institutional analyses of technology and the environment. Expert international contributors offer an in-depth treatment of the theory of social structures of accumulation, extending this analysis to areas of the world where the application of the theory has previously been underexplored such as Western and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and India. It offers a detailed discussion of global neoliberalism, and many of the important individual institutions constituting social structures of accumulation, including in the areas of criminal justice, urban policy, technology, and corporate management. Thought-provoking and insightful, the new ground covered in this Handbook will be a key resource for heterodox economists who are interested in social structures of accumulation, long waves, and stages of capitalism. The comprehensive background analysis on current issues will also be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, and historians"--...

Abstract: Abstract: Heldinnen und Helden sind Grenzgänger.

Abstract: "Alfred A. Marcus and Mazhar Islam examine how demographic changes introduce new challenges for businesses, with a focus on how the world today is divided between disproportionately old and young nations. Taking a broad international perspective, the book illustrates how demography affects underlying conditions in nations, presenting the risks and opportunities for businesses as well as a set of concrete obligations they owe to the nations in which they operate. The book analyzes the key challenges that nations face based on whether they have principally old, young, or middle-aged populations, and how businesses can best respond to these challenges. Chapters particularly emphasize the impacts of immigration and technology, democratic governance, crime, corruption, and stability. Providing an in-depth examination of the relationships between youth bulges, youth busts, and violence, the book grapples with the question of whether the world is likely to be a more peaceful place in the future, and the implications this could have for the global business environment. Demography and the Global Business Environment will be a valuable resource for scholars and students of international business and strategic management. It will also be highly beneficial for business leaders looking for guidance about how to evaluate the opportunities and risks of investing in various countries"--...
