Der Professor für englische Linguistik und Autor zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Publikationen über Australien befasst sich knapp und dennoch informativ mit allen Bereichen aus Kultur und Geschichte der Aborigines. Besondere Schwerpunkte sind Sprache und Umgangsformen der Ureinwohner sowie deren gesellschaftliche Integration. Den Verlust von Sprache als Teil der Identität sieht der Autor als grundlegend für ihren Niedergang. Heute werden indigene Sprachen, die vielfach infolge missionarischer Forschungsarbeit überlebt haben, im Rahmen des ohnehin multikulturellen Lebens in Australien wieder gepflegt. Auch politisch gibt es, wenn auch mitunter zögerlich, Annäherungen der Kulturen. Reihenüblich bietet das Buch anspruchsvolle und kompetente Information, die für Laien ebenso verständlich wie für Studenten nützlich ist. Entsprechend lässt sich dieses Buch als vertiefende Ergänzung zum Titel von A. Hagemann (BA 12/04) einstufen, was sich auch im farblich angepassten Cover zeigt. Mit Bibliografie und Register.
