    Abstract: This study of East German fantasies of material abundance across the border, both before and after the fall of communism, shows the close and intricate relation between ideology and fantasy in upholding social life. In 1989, news broadcasts all over the world were dominated for weeks by images of East Germans crossing the Berlin Wall to West Germany. The images, representing the fall of communism and the democratic will of the people, also showed East Germans' excitement at finally being able to enter the western consumer paradise. But what exactly had they expected to find on the other side of the Wall? Why did they shed tears of joy when for the first time in their lives, they stepped inside West German shops?     Abstract: In 1989 werden de nieuwsuitzendingen over de hele wereld gedomineerd door beelden van de Oost-Duitsers die de Berlijnse Muur overstaken naar West-Duitsland. De verwachtingen waren hooggespannen, eindelijk was een veilige oversteek naar het welgestelde West-Duitsland mogelijk, maar vooral behoorden welvaart en materialisme voor Oost-Duitsers nu ook tot de mogelijkheden. Maar wat verwachtten deze Oost-Duitsers precies te vinden aan de andere kant van de Muur? Waarom waren er tranen van vreugde toen ze voor het eerst in hun leven een West-Duitse winkel binnen konden stappen? En waarom waren zij bereid om meer dan 10 procent van hun gemiddelde maandloon te besteden aan een ananas? Deze studie naar Oost-Duitse fantasieën over de materiële overvloed aan de andere kant van de muur, laat zien dat fantasie en ideologie communicerende vaten zijn, waarbij de een grote invloed heeft op het welslagen van de ander.     Abstract: This remarkable work is an academic and personal journey into Albania’s post-communist society, examining the links between internal and international migration in one of Europe’s poorest countries. Starting from a cluster of villages in south-east Albania, the author follows rural migrants to their native urban destinations within the country, such as Korçë and Tirana, as well as abroad to Thessaloniki, Greece. Migrants’ lives, experiences and feelings are captured through 150 in-depth interviews, a number of group discussions and ethnographic observations. This rich empirical material is analysed with reference to an extensive body of literature in Albania and worldwide. The author’s own experience as a migrant and reflections as a researcher studying her own origin communities add valuable insights. The theoretical notion of intra- and transnational social fields demonstrates how complex the links between internal and international migration are, especially from a development perspective, highlighting their effect on the lives of migrants, their families, communities of origin and country.
    Abstract: Dit boek is een academische en persoonlijke reis naar het postcommunistisch Albanië om inzicht te krijgen in de relatie tussen de interne en internationale migratie en hun invloed op de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling. De auteur volgt de trek van dorpelingen naar steden in het binnenland en buitenland. Door middel van aanzienlijke diepte-interviews, reeks groepsgesprekken en etnografische opmerkingen wordt hun leefomgeving in kaart gebracht. Deze multi-sited, multidisciplinaire en multiniveau benadering maakt onderzoek naar beide migratiesoorten, als onderling verbonden en sociaal ingebedde processen, mogelijk. Zij laat zien hoe deze verwevenheid aanzienlijk invloed uitoefent op de levens van migranten, hun families, hun gemeenschap van herkomst en het land.

    Abstract: In the last 50 years, the United Kingdom has witnessed a growing proportion of mixed African-Caribbean and white British families. With rich new primary evidence of 'mixed-race' in the capital city, The Creolisation of London Kinship thoughtfully explores this population. Making an indelible contribution to both kinship research and wider social debates, the book emphasises a long-term evolution of family relationships across generations. Individuals are followed through changing social and historical contexts, seeking to understand in how far many of these transformations may be interpreted as creolisation. Examined, too, are strategies and innovations in relationship construction, the social constraints put upon them, the special significance of women and children in kinship work and the importance of non-biological as well as biological notions of family relatedness.
    Abstract: In de afgelopen vijftig jaar heeft het Verenigd Koninkrijk een aanzienlijke groei meegemaakt van gemengde gezinnen met een Afro-Caribische en blanke achtergrond. The Creolisation of London Kinship levert een belangrijke bijdrage aan zowel onderzoek naar verwantschap als aan bredere maatschappelijke debatten en legt de nadruk op langetermijnveranderingen in familierelaties door de generaties heen. De individuen worden gevolgd binnen de veranderende maatschappelijke en historische context, om er achter te komen in welke mate deze transformaties leiden tot creolisering.
