Abstract: "Visualizing patterns, relationships and anomalies in multi-sourced data is challenging when the number of records continues to grow exponentially. Many traditional methods of visualization for business intelligence and reporting aggregate the results into units which are easily computed and displayed. However, these visuals often fail to reveal the true patterns of the underlying data. If we used more pixels in our visualizations we could see millions of data representations on a screen. Computing a value for each pixel is a difficult challenge because it often requires whole set aggregates and table scans. There are so many pixels that it quickly becomes efficient to render these visuals on the server. This webcast covers: some favorite examples of big data visualizations, show you how rendering every pixel can be an effective tool for analysis tools, and architectural considerations necessary to create these visualizations for your organization."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "Automated tests are great! They tell you when your software is broken and enable you to refactor with confidence, leading to cleaner codebases and less stressed developers. Tests are so great, in fact, that a group of true believers started writing them before the actual code. What they called test-driven development (TDD) turned out to be a fantastic way to develop software. Now, with this video course, you can get started with TDD step-by-step. TDD is often demonstrated with toy examples that fail to represent the challenges of real-world software development. But in this course, Harry Percival takes you through a practical example designed to look more like real life: building a simple web app with all the complexities associated with web browsers, the HTTP protocol, web frameworks, and database integration."--Resource description page.

Today, developers need to "glue" several technologies together to store documents, blobs and support searches and queries in near real time over big data. This isn't always simple or scalable and requires a lot of manual tuning, sharding etc. Crate Data is an open source project that attempts to provide a super simple developers' nirvana-a real time SQL data store for big data-using elasticsearch, Lucene, Netty and Presto. In this webcast we will demonstrate, step-by-step example how a web service can be deployed with the full service stack (data and application) on a single node and then add nodes as needed just by starting them. Crate is self-configuring and self-healing and can be deployed on one device, many devices or the cloud."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "A big challenge in writing web applications today is the intense pressure to go for the short term win: you quickly pull something together that looks good, launch, and move on. But the risk is that now you're locked in -- making major changes over the lifetime of the code base requires radical surgery, or sometimes just starting over. Is it possible to meet your deadlines and get long term maintenance and reuse? Fortunately, modern JavaScript libraries offer some excellent patterns that can help you safely extend & reuse components for months and years to come -- without over-engineering or sacrificing much development speed. The key is to build upon a solid foundation that gives you lots of flexibility down the road. In this interactive webcast presented by Evan Goer, author of YUI 3 Cookbook, we'll walk through some specific examples from the YUI Library that cleanly separate concerns, and then show how that pays off: first by radically altering a component's functionality without affecting its core plumbing, and then neatly packaging up that change as a plugin, as a "class-like" extension, and as a mixin."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "The presentation is divided into four modules. Module I lays some important groundwork, discussing predicates and constraints in particular and stressing the importance of database consistency. Module II considers consistency in more detail and then discusses a simple example in depth, building to the conclusion that the OWA and the relational model are fundamentally and irrevocably at odds with each other (which is why in practice we always adopt the CWA). Module III then goes into more depth on predicates and shows how to get "don't know" answers out of the database (when appropriate) without any need for nulls or three-valued logic (3LV). Finally, Module IV shows how the CWA can even be used in connection with predicates involving negation or conjunction."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "Nullology is the study of the empty set. Sets per se crop up all over the place in the relational world; the question is -- and it's a crucial one -- what happens if the set under consideration happens to be empty? For example, a relation contains a set of tuples: what about the possibility of a relation containing no tuples at all? Now, this particular possibiloty is reasonably familiar, because a relation with no tuples behaves much like a file with no records. But even in this case, there are some interestng aspects to consider that are probably unfamiliar to most database professionals. And there are many other places in the relational world where the empty set rears its head, several of them both unfamiliar and of fundamental importance."--Resource description page.

Module II introduces certain fundamental principles, including The Assignment Principle, The Golden Rule, and The Principle of Interchangeability, and discusses the concept of information equivalence. Module III consists of a detailed discussion of a motivating example, using that example to introduce the important concept of compensatory actions. Abstract: "Implementing distributed systems can be hard. Servers crash, become slow, and get partitioned away. These are all events that can happen in a real setting and your distributed system needs to be ready to deal with them. Apache ZooKeeper has been developed to deal with such problems. It is a replicated in-memory system that stores small files called znodes in a hierarchical manner. The ordering guarantees operations over znodes and the notification scheme it provides enables the implementation of a number of commonly used recipes, like master election, group membership, locks, barriers, etc. Without a component like ZooKeeper, implementing such recipes from scratch can be a significant burden because they require sophisticated algorithms with many corner cases that are easy to overlook. ZooKeeper, however, does not make the promise of completely hiding all the problems of a distributed system, but instead to simplify the task. This webcast covers: some basic concepts of ZooKeeper design choices, and caveats, examples of recipes one can implement with the ZooKeeper API elaborate on the potential problems with naive recipes, discuss ways around such problems."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "How can front-end web developers make the transition out of developing with known goals and tools into the new world of development in the midst of uncertainty? Approaching the web today requires that the web developer let go of hard and fast rules, and begins to design for uncertainty. Embracing uncertainty as a core tenet of web development and scrapping the rules we've relied on in the past few years is the best bet for creating future proof web solutions. By combining web standards, progressive enhancement, an iterative approach to design and development and a desire to question the status quo; web development teams can create sites and applications that should perform well in a wide range of present and future devices. By focusing on optimal solutions with intelligent fallbacks and forgoing the desire for absolute solutions, design and development can work together to create a web that is fast, widely available and reliable."--Resource description page.

Abstract: "The presentation is divided into three modules. Module I reviews conventional two-valued logic (2VL), examines some of the most immediate differences between it and three-valued logic (3VL), and shows how 3VL inevitably gives rise to errors. Module II goes into more depth on why such errors are inevitable. It also considers the question: Which 3VL are we talking about, anyway? Module III then considers many-valued logics in general, and four-valued logic (4VL) in particular, and discusses a variety of further related points. It also briefly describes an approach to missing information based on 2VL and classical relational theory"--Resource description page.
