Abstract: This, the seventh in the 12-volume series Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research, presents scholarly research on major discourses in values education globally. It is an accessible, practical yet scholarly resource that explores international concerns in the field of globalisation and comparative education. A vital sourcebook of ideas for researchers, practitioners and policy makers in values education, multiculturalism and moral education, the volume also provides a timely overview of current issues affecting values education, comparative education and education policy research in the global culture. Drawing on recent studies in the areas of globalisation, equity, social justice, and the role of the state, the book critically examines the interplay between values education, globalisation, and dominant ideologies, and reflects on its implications for policy. It goes further to explore conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches applicable in the research covering values education, globalisation, equity, and multicultural education. Individual chapters critically analyse the dominant discourses and debates pertaining to values education, multiculturalism and relevant comparative education discourses. In addition, the book evaluates the ambivalent and problematic relationship between the state, its dominant models of values education, globalisation and social change. The authors employ a number of diverse paradigms in comparative education research, ranging from critical theory to globalization. By focusing on ideology, globalisation and democracy, they attempt to examine critically both the reasons for, and the outcomes of, education reforms in the domain of values education, policy change and transformation. In doing so, they provide a more informed critique of Western-driven models of accountability, quality and school effectiveness.

Abstract: The relationship between government, education reform and student outcomes is an ambivalent and often problematic one. Focusing on the interplay between decentralization, globalization, and education reforms, this book draws on recent studies to explore the conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches that can be applied to research covering the state, globalization, equality, and education. It lays bare the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of education and policy reforms, and illustrates the way the relationship between the state and education policy affects current models and trends in education reforms and schooling globally. The chapters critically analyze the dominant discourses about decentralization and comparative education and examine the current resurgence of neo-liberal ideological models in education, both newly constructed and re-invented. To ensure as broad a perspective on the issues as possible, the authors employ a raft of diverse paradigms in comparative education research, ranging from critical theory to globalization. This in-depth exploration of globalization, ideology and democracy in education examines both the reasons for and outcomes of education reforms, decentralization, policy change and transformation. In doing so, it seeks to provide a more informed critique on Western-driven models of accountability, quality and school effectiveness. It is the eighth in the 12-volume book series Globalization, Comparative Education and Policy Research, which presents scholarly research on major discourses in comparative education research with reference to decentralization and school-based management. The series provides an accessible, practical yet scholarly source of information about international issues in the field of globalization and comparative education.

Abstract: This, the sixth volume in Springer's Globalisation, Comparative Education and Policy Research series, presents scholarly research on major discourses of race, ethnicity and gender in education. It is a sourcebook of ideas for researchers, practitioners and policy makers in education, globalisation, social justice, equity and access in schooling around the world. The aim of the book is to provide an easily accessible, practical yet scholarly source of information about issues of international concern in the field of globalisation and comparative education. Readers will also find here the very latest thinking on race, ethnicity and gender in the context of global culture. Editors Zajda and Freeman have compiled perspectives on education and policy research that are relevant to progressive pedagogy, social change and transformational educational reforms in the 21st century. The book critically examines the interplay between state, ideology and current discourses of race, ethnicity and gender in the global culture. It draws on recent research in the areas of globalisation, equity, social justice, and the role of the State. The authors also explore conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches that could be applied to research covering the State, globalisation, race, ethnicity and gender, and analyze existing inequalities due to race, ethnicity and gender and resultant social stratification. Finally, the book demonstrates the neo-liberal ideological imperatives of education and policy reform, affecting race, ethnicity and gender, and illustrates the way the relationship between the State and education policy affects current trends in education policy as well as reforms in the fields of race, ethnicity and gender.

Abstract: This volume offers a critique of the nexus between ICT and its impact on society, individuals and educational institutions. One of the most significant dimensions of globalisation has been the rapid development of information and communications technologies (ICTs). Our lives have been changed by ICTs in numerous ways and the implications for education are enormous. The ICTs have transformed the linguistic, cognitive and visual dimensions of human communication, as well as our perceptions of the self, and social identity in the global culture. They have facilitated the development of new dimensions of digital literacy, such as blogging and sms messaging. In this sense, cyberlanguage continues to evolve by borrowing and adapting familiar words, coining new expressions, and embracing particular styles. The book provides directions in education and policy research, relevant to transformational educational reforms in the 21st century.

Abstract: This book explores the problematic relationship between education, social justice and the State, against the background of comparative education research. The book critiques the status quo of stratified school systems, and the unequal distribution of cultural capital and value added schooling. The authors address one of today's most pressing questions: Are social, economic and cultural divisions between the nations, between school sectors, between schools and between students growing or declining?

Abstract: The aim of this Handbook is to present a global overview of developments in education and policy change during the last decade. It has the objective of providing both a strategic education policy statement on recent shifts in education and policy research globally and offers new approaches to further exploration, development and improvement of education and policy making. The Handbook attempts to address some of the above issues and problems confronting educators and policy makers globally. Different articles seek to conceptualize the on-going problems of education policy formulation and implementation, and provide a useful synthesis of the education policy research conducted in different countries, and practical implications. The Handbook, by focusing on such issues as - the OECD (2001) model of the knowledge society, and associated strategic challenge and 'deliverable goals' (OECD 2001:139)- UNESCO-driven lifelong learning paradigm, and its relevance to education policy makers, globally - different models of policy planning, and equity questions that are raised by centralization/decentralization, diversity/uniformity and curriculum standardization issues - the 'crises' of educational quality, the debate of standards and excellence, and good and effective teaching. - will contribute to a better and more holistic understanding of the education policy and research nexus, offering possible strategies for the effective and pragmatic policy planning and implementation at the local, regional and national levels.
