    Abstract: How systematic comparative research can unlock the potential of social media scholarship.Though diverse and fruitful, social media scholarship too often focuses on single platforms in single countries, disconnected from other media that people use. Mora Matassi and Pablo J. Boczkowski's alternative approach offers a framework based on the epistemological principle that everything we know emerges from comparing two or more entities. Drawing on a wealth of real-life cases, Matassi and Boczkowski examine key aspects of social media from three comparative dimensions (nations, media, and platforms) and two topics (history and language) to propose a blueprint that encourages researchers and lay readers alike to think about social media from new perspectives.Matassi and Boczkowski illustrate their theoretical points with examples that link multiple media, illuminate an array of platforms, cover different countries and eras, and address various languages and both textual and non-textual signifiers.     Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen?     Abstract: This open access book is one of the first academic works to comprehensively analyse the dilemma concerning global content governance on social media. To date, no single human rights standard exists across all social media platforms, allowing private companies to set their own rules, values and parameters. On the one hand, this normative autonomy raises serious concerns, primarily around whether companies should be permitted to establish the rules governing free speech online. On the other hand, if social media platforms simply adopted international law standards, they would be compelled to operate a choice on which model to follow, and put in place mechanisms to uphold these general standards. This book examines this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective, drawing from the expertise of the authors in law, political science and communication studies.     Abstract: Inwieweit das Programmangebot der Volkshochschulen die Medienkompetenz und digitale Teilhabe der Teilnehmenden fördert, untersucht Jan Hellriegel in seiner Dissertation. Die Arbeit basiert auf einer Fallstudie mit vier Volkshochschulen in Rheinland-Pfalz. Kernstück ist eine Programmanalyse unter dem Aspekt der Medienkompetenzförderung. Zudem wurden anhand von Interviews mit VHS-Leitungen und hauptamtlich pädagogischen Mitarbeitenden Faktoren ermittelt, die die Programmplanung beeinflussen. In den Ergebnissen wird deutlich, dass dem Auftrag, die Medienkompetenz der Teilnehmenden zu fördern in den VHS-Programmen nicht angemessen Rechnung getragen werden kann. Bezüge finden sich vorrangig im Kontext beruflicher Mediennutzung, während eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Medien und digitaler Transformation nur selten Platz im Programm findet. Hier Schwerpunkte zu setzen, ist ein bislang nicht erfüllter, aber notwendiger Bildungsauftrag der VHS zur digitalen Teilhabe für alle in einer demokratisch verfassten Gesellschaft. Gründe für diese Defizite sieht Hellriegel unter anderem in der Abhängigkeit der Volkshochschulen von Teilnahmegebühren.     Abstract: Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy contributes to ongoing conversations about control of knowledge and different ways of knowing. It does so by analysing why media and information literacy (MIL) is proposed as a solution for addressing the current information crisis. Questioning why MIL is commonly believed to wield such power, the book throws into sharp relief several paradoxes that are built into common understandings of such literacies. Haider and Sundin take the reader on a journey across different fields of practice, research and policymaking, including librarianship, information studies, teaching and journalism, media and communication and the educational sciences. The authors also consider national information policy proposals and the recommendations of NGOs or international bodies, such as UNESCO and the OECD. Showing that MIL plays an active role in contemporary controversies, such as those on climate change or vaccination, Haider and Sundin argue that such controversies challenge existing notions of fact and ignorance, trust and doubt, and our understanding of information access and information control. The book thus argues for the need to unpack and understand the contradictions forming around these notions in relation to MIL, rather than attempting to arrive at a single, comprehensive definition. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or extravagantly colored, sporting names, slogans, or entire tableaus, with airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of late-twentieth-century Africa. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life—including, for example, rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, and popular culture—at once embodying Kenya’s staggering social problems as well as the bright promises of its future. Great importance was given to bibliography, usually difficult to compile in a time-consuming process; a separate part at the end of the volume is dedicated to a bibliographie résonée, arranged according to countries and genres; this will facilitate further and more specific research in special fields of interest. This book offers for the first time a comparative survey of nearly all genres of the traditional oral folklore of Southeast Europe, independent from language, ethnic grouping, national boarders, religion and confessions; in this way the high degree of homogenity of the highly developed traditional oral culture in the historical Balkans is documented as well as the high numbers of variants and versions and the superb literary quality of these orally transmitted lingual manifestations, in some cases equal to the written literature of the region.
    Abstract: Die komparative Untersuchung beschäftigt sich mit dem Vergleich von Inhalten, Thematiken und Motiven, von gesungenen und gesprochenen Oraltexten in Südosteuropa, aber auch symbolischen Konstellationen, stereotype Situationen, Verhaltensweisen, die alle zusammen charakteristische Teile der traditionellen Kulturtopologie des Balkanraums bilden. Besondere Sorgfalt wird auf die schwierig und zeitraubend zu erfassenden Bibliographie gelegt; ein eigener Abschnitt am Bandende bringt eine ausführlich kommentierte kritische Bibliographie, nach Ländern und Gattungen geordnet, die weiterführende spezifischere Forschungsvorhaben erleichtern soll.     Abstract: Article descriptions such as “Allgäuer Emmentaler,” “Dresdner Christstollen” or “Bayerisches Bier” do not simply name culinary products, but locate them in certain regions and link them to memories and associations. They prove not only a spatial (geographic), but also a temporal (traditional) embedding in a certain region of origin. Such names are self-evidently attractive to clients, who have the choice between similar products, to producers, who are involved in international competition, and not least to politicians, who are interested in the protection and promotion of the economy in their areas of responsibility. Accordingly, the European Union (EU) established a legal instrument which regulates the use of geographical indications. It is based on the assumption that regions have common climatic, geological, biological and cultural characteristics. Using the example of geographical indications and four exemplarily chosen specialties (the cheeses: Allgäuer Emmentaler, Odenwälder Frühstückskäse, Piave and Parmigiano Reggiano), Sarah May has developed an ethnographically thick, internationally comparative description of local and transnational practices in the system of EU quality schemes for agricultural products. She combines terms and theses of law and economics and translates them into an issue of cultural anthropology: She focuses on regional (culinary) culture and its economic valorization, on the interests, strategies and conflicts which accompany the transformation of regional handed-down practices and products into legally protected, spatially limited collective property.
    Abstract: Namen wie „Allgäuer Emmentaler“, „Dresdner Christstollen“ oder „Bayerisches Bier“ bezeichnen nicht nur kulinarische Produkte, sondern verorten diese in bestimmten Regionen, verknüpfen sie mit Erinnerungen und Assoziationen, suggerieren dadurch nicht allein räumliche, sondern auch historisch-tradierte Gebundenheit. Naheliegend, dass solche Namen einen Reiz darstellen – für die Kunden, die zwischen ähnlichen Produkten wählen, für die Hersteller, involviert in einen internationalen Wettbewerb, und nicht zuletzt für die Politik, interessiert an Schutz und Förderung der eigenen Wirtschaft. Entsprechend etablierte die Europäische Union ein Rechtsinstrument, das den Umgang mit geografischen Herkunftsangaben Bündnisweit reguliert. Es fußt auf der Annahme, dass Regionen über klimatische, geo- und biologische, doch auch kulturhistorische Charakteristika verfügen. Am Beispiel der geschützten Ursprungsbezeichnung und vier exemplarisch gewählten Spezialitäten (Allgäuer Emmentaler, Odenwälder Frühstückskäse, Piave und Parmigiano Reggiano) erarbeitet die Autorin eine ethnografisch dichte, international vergleichende Beschreibung lokaler wie transnationaler Praktiken im europäischen Geoschutzsystem. Sie verbindet Interessensfelder der Wirtschafts- und Rechtswissenschaft und macht diese zu einem kulturwissenschaftlichen Gegenstand, wenn sie das Spannungsfeld von regionaler (kulinarischer) Kultur und wirtschaftlicher Inwertsetzung beleuchtet und auf Interessen, Strategien und Konflikte fokussiert, die die Transformation von präsumiert regional tradierten Produkten in rechtlich geschütztes kollektives Eigentum begleiten.

    Abstract: During the Russian Revolution and Civil War, amateur theater groups sprang up in cities across the country. Workers, peasants, students, soldiers, and sailors provided entertainment ranging from improvisations to gymnastics and from propaganda sketches to the plays of Chekhov. In Revolutionary Acts, Lynn Mally reconstructs the history of the amateur stage in Soviet Russia from 1917 to the height of the Stalinist purges. Her book illustrates in fascinating detail how Soviet culture was transformed during the new regime's first two decades in power. Of all the arts, theater had a special appeal for mass audiences in Russia, and with the coming of the revolution it took on an important role in the dissemination of the new socialist culture. Mally's analysis of amateur theater as a space where performers, their audiences, and the political authorities came into contact enables her to explore whether this culture emerged spontaneously "from below" or was imposed by the revolutionary elite. She shows that by the late 1920s, Soviet leaders had come to distrust the initiatives of the lower classes, and the amateur theaters fell increasingly under the guidance of artistic professionals. Within a few years, state agencies intervened to homogenize repertoire and performance style, and with the institutionalization of Socialist Realist principles, only those works in a unified Soviet canon were presented

Das Buch basiert auf einer 15 monatigen ethnologischen Feldforschung (zwischen 2003 und 2005) der Autorin bei diesen Waldbewohnern. Sie untersucht, wie durch Interaktionen mit verschiedenen Akteuren, vor allem dem indonesischen Staat und Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen – sie alle haben Interesse am Wald als wirtschaftliche Ressource oder Schutzgebiet –, verschiedene Identitäten der Orang Rimba hervorgebracht werden. Die Arbeit setzt sich detailliert mit der Selbstdarstellung der Orang Rimba auseinander und vergleicht sie mit verschiedenen Fremdperspektiven externer Akteure auf diese nicht sesshafte Gruppe.     Abstract: This remarkable work is an academic and personal journey into Albania’s post-communist society, examining the links between internal and international migration in one of Europe’s poorest countries. Starting from a cluster of villages in south-east Albania, the author follows rural migrants to their native urban destinations within the country, such as Korçë and Tirana, as well as abroad to Thessaloniki, Greece. Migrants’ lives, experiences and feelings are captured through 150 in-depth interviews, a number of group discussions and ethnographic observations. This rich empirical material is analysed with reference to an extensive body of literature in Albania and worldwide. The author’s own experience as a migrant and reflections as a researcher studying her own origin communities add valuable insights. The theoretical notion of intra- and transnational social fields demonstrates how complex the links between internal and international migration are, especially from a development perspective, highlighting their effect on the lives of migrants, their families, communities of origin and country.
    Abstract: Dit boek is een academische en persoonlijke reis naar het postcommunistisch Albanië om inzicht te krijgen in de relatie tussen de interne en internationale migratie en hun invloed op de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling. De auteur volgt de trek van dorpelingen naar steden in het binnenland en buitenland. Door middel van aanzienlijke diepte-interviews, reeks groepsgesprekken en etnografische opmerkingen wordt hun leefomgeving in kaart gebracht. Deze multi-sited, multidisciplinaire en multiniveau benadering maakt onderzoek naar beide migratiesoorten, als onderling verbonden en sociaal ingebedde processen, mogelijk. Zij laat zien hoe deze verwevenheid aanzienlijk invloed uitoefent op de levens van migranten, hun families, hun gemeenschap van herkomst en het land.

    Abstract: Nieuw in Nederland: Feesten en rituelen in verandering levert een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigranten, cultuur en nationalisme. Het boek stelt het idee ter discussie dat in Nederland migrantenculturen bestaan met elk hun eigen traditionele feesten en rituelen. De onderliggende aanname dat migranten vastomlijnde gemeenschappen met eigen culturen vormen, wordt aan de hand van etnografisch onderzoek weerlegd. In het boek staan feesten en rituelen centraal die in Nederland zijn ontstaan als gevolg van de komst van nieuwe Nederlanders: van een doop in een Ghanese pinksterkerk tot het multiculturele evenement Kwakoe. Anders dan vanuit een conventioneel perspectief, waarin deze vieringen als onderdeel van en behorende tot culturen van migranten worden gezien, laten de bijdragen zien dat deze vieringen voortkomen uit onze Nederlandse samenleving als geheel. Vieringen van nieuwe Nederlanders blijken een hybride waarin de Nederlandse geschiedenis even bepalend is als de tradities in het land van oorsprong. Feesten en rituelen lijken weliswaar stabiel, maar zijn voortdurend in verandering. Onder de noemer 'nieuwe Nederlandsheid' schetst Nieuw in Nederland niet zozeer een portret van immigrantenculturen, maar van cultuur in Nederland.

    Abstract: Following the formation of the German National Socialist Party in the 1920s, various forms of sound (popular music, voice, noise and silence) and media technology (radio and loudspeaker systems) were configured as useful to the party's political programme. Focusing on the urban "soundscape" of Düsseldorf, the author makes a persuasive case for investigating such sound events and technological devices in their specific contexts of production and reception. Nazi Soundscapes identifies strategies for controlling space and reworking identity patterns, but also the ongoing difficulties in manipulating mediated sounds and the spaces of listening reception, whether in the home, workplace, the cinema, public rituals or with wartime siren systems. The study revises visualist notions of social control, and reveals the disciplinary functions of listening (as eavesdropping) as well as the sonic dimensions to exclusion and violence during Nazism.     Abstract: Current economic growth strategies around the world are rapidly depleting natural resources and eco-systems. Just Transitions provides an overview of these challenges from a Global South perspective. How do developing countries eradicate poverty via economic development, while encountering the consequences of global warming and dwindling supplies of clean water, productive soils, cheap oil, minerals and other resources? How do they address widening inequalities, as well as the need to rebuild ecosystem services and natural resources? This book considers a just transition, which reconciles the sustainable use of natural resources with a pervasive commitment to sufficiency (where over-consumers are satisfied with less so that under-consumers can secure enough). It synthesises a range of different literatures to illuminate new ways of thinking from a sustainability perspective. It rethinks development with special reference to the greening of the developmental state, explores the key role that cities could play in the transition to a more sustainably urbanised world, highlights the neglect of soils and examines the potential of sustainable agriculture to feed the world. Case studies drawn from Africa detail the challenges, but they are set in the context of global trends. In Tanah Karo, einer agrarisch geprägten Hochebene, säumen Aerobic- Studios und Schönheitssalon die Straßen der zwei Kleinstädte Berastagi und Kabanjahe. Weibliche Schönheit in Form von Femininität gilt als modern. Moderne Weiblichkeit, die ihren Ausdruck in einem schönen Körper findet, wird durch ein komplexes Bündel von Diskursen und Praxen lokaler, nationaler und globaler Provenienz konstituiert. Ausgehend vom Körper, der als die vermittelnde Instanz zwischen Diskursen und Praxen verstanden wird, analysiert die Verfasserin die Komplexität des Themas Schönheit und Modernität aus Perspektive der Akteurinnen. Welche Ziele verfolgen sie mit der strategischen Aneignung des Ideals der modernen Weiblichkeit? Wie strukturieren soziale Positionen die jeweiligen Aneignungsprozesse? Die Verfasserin zeigt, wie die zunehmende Bedeutung von Schönheit mit Transformationen im Bereich der Geschlechterverhältnisse, des Konsums und der sozialen Differenzierung verknüpft ist. Moderne Weiblichkeit konstituiert sich an der Schnittstelle ästhetischer, aber vor allem auch sozialer, ökonomischer, kultureller, religiöser und moralischer Diskurse. Das zentrale Motiv der Akteurinnen für die Aneignung von als modern erachteten Schönheitsidealen stellt die Erweiterung der eigenen Handlungsfähigkeit in der patrilinearen Gesellschaft der Karo Batak dar. Die jeweiligen sozialen Positionen führen zu unterschiedlichen Formen der Aneignung, die in verschiedenen Formen moderner Weiblichkeit resultieren. Am Beispiel von Frauen der städtischen Mittelschicht, jungen Frauen vom Land und waria, Menschen mit weiblicher transgender-Identität, werden diese Aneignungsprozesse und ihre gesellschaftlichen Bedeutungen vergleichend diskutiert. Die Globalisierung von Schönheit, so lässt sich resümieren, bringt – selbst auf begrenzter lokaler Ebene – verschiedene moderne Weiblichkeiten hervor.

    Abstract: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the most important theoretical visions on film, television, and new media The works of the legendary film director and producer Alfred Hitchcock that cover an extensive period have had a huge influence on film and television history. His work forms the main theme in this excellent introduction and provides the starting point for different methods of analysis and interpretation in modern film theory.     Abstract: Brody, a town today lying in Western Ukraine, became part of the Habsburg Empire following the First Partition of Poland in 1772. Until Austria-Hungary's collapse at the end of the First World War the town was right on the border with Poland (until 1795) and later with Russia (until 1918). This book embraces a timespan of almost 150 years, excluding the First World War. It examines Brody's economic and social history in the first two sections; the third section is dedicated to the perception of the town's Austrian past. The most important material which serves as the basis for this work are archival sources mainly holdings in L'viv, Vienna, Paris and Kraków as well as published sources such as statistics, administrative handbooks and travel reports. During the 18th and the early 19th century Brody was a major commercial hub in Central and Eastern Europe. Only in the last decades of the 19th century the city transformed from a centre of international trade and cultural importance into a peripheral town at the Galician-Russian border. Whether we should consider the case of Brody as a history of failure depends on one's perspective: From a macroeconomic point of view Brody's performance would not qualify as a success story, because the city failed to embrace an urbanisation and modernisation that was so characteristic for cities in this period. From the Galician perspective, however, the economical transformation of Brody was desirable, because the city's former international orientation had led to a certain self isolation from its Galician surroundings. Thus, from a regional point of view Brody's shrinking proved the city's successful integration into the social and political realities of the Crownland.     Abstract: Das heute in der Westukraine gelegene Brody wurde im Zuge der Ersten Teilung Polens 1772 Teil der Habsburgermonarchie und war rund 150 Jahre lang die nordöstlichste Grenzstadt des Landes, zunächst zu Polen (bis 1795) danach zu Russland. Das vorliegende Buch behandelt die gesamte österreichischer Zeit exklusive des Ersten Weltkriegs. Die ersten beiden Teile analysieren Brody aus wirtschafts- bzw. gesellschaftsgeschichtlicher Sicht, während im dritten Teil die unterschiedlichen zeitgenössischen und heutigen Wahrnehmungen Brodys thematisiert werden. Die ersten beiden Abschnitte entsprechen einer klassischen historischen Herangehensweise, bestehend aus der Analyse von Archivmaterial (v.a. aus Lemberg, Wien, Krakau und Paris), publizierten Quellen (Statistiken, Schematismen, Reiseberichte) und Sekundärliteratur. Der letzte Teil ist hingegen literatur- bzw. kulturwissenschaftlich gearbeitet und umfasst eine Analyse von Erinnerungsbüchern, Reiseberichten und Belletristik, sowie einen Bildteil. Brody war im 18. und frühen 19. Jhd. eine der wichtigsten Handelsdrehscheiben Ost(mittel)europas. Erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jhd. entwickelte sich Brody von einer Handelsstadt europäischen Formats zu einer peripheren galizischen Kleinstadt an der österreichisch-russischen Grenze. Ob man diesen Bedeutungsverlust als Misserfolgsgeschichte wertet oder nicht, hängt vom jeweiligen Blickwinkel ab: Aus makroökonomischer Perspektive ist der Niedergang offensichtlich, da Brody den von Technisierung und Industrialisierung geprägten Urbanisierungs- und Modernisierungstendenzen der zweiten Hälfte des 19. The Browne report advocates, in effect, the privatisation of higher education in England. With the proposed removal of the current cap on student fees and the removal of state funding from most undergraduate degree programmes, universities are set for a period of major reorganisation not seen since the higher education reforms in the 1960s. This book brings together some of the leading figures in Higher Education in the UK to set out what they see as the role of the university in public life. The book argues for a more balanced understanding of the value of universities than that outlined in the Browne Report.
