Abstract:
Zwangsumsiedlungen, Aussiedlungen, Vertreibungen gelten seit Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges als probates Mittel, um Nationalitätenkonflikte zu befrieden - eine Folge der Nationalstaatsidee, die sich in Europa im 19. Jahrhunderts durchsetzte. Gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges bewegten sich geschätzte 20 Millionen Menschen auf den Straßen des Deutschen Reiches. Etwa vierzehn Millionen Menschen hatten ihre Heimat durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg, durch Flucht und Vertreibung aus den ehemals deutschen Gebieten im östlichen Europa verloren und zogen nun Richtung Westen. Mehr als vier Millionen von ihnen verblieben in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone (SBZ), der späteren DDR. Ein Viertel der bundesdeutschen Bevölkerung stammt aus einer Familie, die von Flucht und Vertreibung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg betroffen war. Im Folgenden sollen der Umgang mit und die Auswirkungen von diesen Bevölkerungsverschiebungen am Beispiel der Entwicklungen in der SBZ und DDR thematisiert werden, denn in beiden deutschen Staaten manifestierten sich bemerkenswerte Unterschiede.
