Designating a news organization as fake, or der Lügenpresse, has a darker history, associated with authoritarian regimes or populist bombast diminishing the reputation of 'elite media' and the value of inconvenient truths. Between 2002 and 2019, at least two thousand people were killed in 57 countries for defending their lands and the environment. Recent policy initiatives and media coverage have provided much needed attention to the protection and support of defenders, but there has so far been little scholarly work. This edited volume explains who these defenders are, what threats they face and what can be done to help support and protect them. Delving deep into the complex relations between and within communities, corporations and government authorities, the book highlights the diversity of defenders, the collective character of their struggles, the many drivers and forms of violence they are facing, as well as the importance of emotions and gendered dimensions in protests and repression. Drawing on global case studies, it examines the violence taking place around different types of development projects, including fossil fuels, agro-industrial, renewable energy, and infrastructure. The volume also examines the violence surrounding conservation projects, including through militarized wildlife protection and surveillance technologies.     Abstract: How should we understand social memory in the age of new media? Classic sociology described the ways in which social memory was enacted through ritual, language art, architecture and institution - phenomena whose persistence over time and whose capacity for a shared storing of the past was contrasted with fleeting individual memory. Society is memory, Émile Durkheim stated. However, today's new time technologies compel us to rethink this concept of memory and its emphasis on a shared past. For in the age of digital computing, instant updating and transfer functions and interconnection through real time networks give an unprecedented priority to the present and the future, while challenging the very distinction between individual and collective memory. New media technologies raise the question of the temporalities of memory to a principle, challenging not just the classic description of social memory, but also the social ontology that it presupposes. 'Memory in Motion: Archives, Technology and the Social' discusses the new technologies of memory from perspectives that explicitly investigate their impact on the very conceptualization of the social

    Abstract: Middlebrow Cinema challenges an often uninterrogated hostility to middlebrow culture that frequently dismisses it as conservative, which it often is not, and feminized or middle-class, which it often is. The volume defines the term relationally against shifting concepts of 'high' and 'low', and considers its deployment in connection with text, audience and institution. In exploring the concept of the middlebrow, this book recovers films that were widely meaningful to contemporary audiences, yet sometimes overlooked by critics interested in popular and arthouse extremes. It also addresses the question of socially-mobile audiences, who might express their aspirations through film-watching; and traces the cultural consequences of the movement of films across borders and between institutions.
