Abstract: Abstract: Raises questions & themes relevant for introduction of men's studies or critical studies on men & masculinities in the Czech Republic. The general issue of gender studies, & the situation & context of men in the Czech Republic, are focal. The former deals with the theoretical basis for research on men, while the latter explores empirical data on men that may be used in further research. The author's empirical inquiry into the life histories of men in the Czech Republic is described, highlighting different men (nonmanipulative, lacking the need to control others, emotional) to challenge the existence of a single normative (hegemonic) masculinity. In accordance with contemporary sources from Anglo Saxon social science literature, the existence of a plurality & colorful forms of masculine identity is suggested, & implications for gender studies in the Czech Republic are discussed

Abstract: Abstract: Fundamental changes in the Czech Republic since Nov 1989 are contended to be brought about by the interplay of the drama of the erosion of the old regime with that of the birth of a new order. When the old order was partly dismantled, society found itself in transitional anomie, which made it possible to gradually build a new order. This transitological view sees transition as a provisional state of affairs constructed by many individuals, groups, communities, & organizations. This provisional situation is characterized by a rich dynamic of social problems, together with an unbalanced & changing distribution of gains & losses. The resulting conflicts become - in successful cases - part of the universe of myth, in which the conflicts are seen as a series of crises/tests that push the society indirectly from the old to the new order. The transition ends when the participants cease to see the current events as provisional. The main task then becomes the normalization of the new order

Abstract: Abstract: Data from a project titled 'Men and Women University Graduates' & other available statistical data are drawn on to explore areas of difference in the positions of men & women with university degrees in Czech society, focusing on their position in the labor market in terms of salary differences & attitudes to performance & career. It is hypothesized that the continuing gender differences between graduates cannot be attributed to the nature of the female workforce. The secondary position of these women on the labor market is due to noneconomic factors. Topics include the existing guarantees for equality of men & women in Czech society, the double standard of university qualifications, the link between the university-educated female labor force & the female sectors of the labor market, the 'unclear identity' of women graduates, & the low level of emotional support from these women's social surroundings. Also considered are the individualized, personalized ways of creating a social pos

Abstract: Abstract: The first postcommunist generation of youth in Slovakia set out on its path by making decisions on professional orientation at the age when encounter & experience are perceived as an important & controversial dimensions of one's personality. The second phase, consisting of decision making on social breakthrough into the labor market, has been shifted into another civilization time-space through the transformation of real socialism into real capitalism. Unemployment as a social threat & as a life experience is an element of youth individualization that is demonstrated by acceptance of flexible solutions, including readiness to change place of residence & professional qualifications. A comparison of 1993 & 1995 surveys indicates that the initial shock of unemployment has been overcome

Abstract: Abstract: In social studies of technology, as in many other scientific disciplines, highly persuasive similes are at work: pious stories, seemingly reaped from research, suggesting certain general theoretical insights. Variously adapted, they are handed down: in the process, they acquire almost doctrinal unassailability. One such parable, which has been retold in technology and urban studies for a long time, is the story of Robert Moses’ low bridges, preventing the poor and the black of New York from gaining access to Long Island resorts and beaches. The story turns out to be counterfactual, but even if a small myth is disenchanted, it serves a purpose: to resituate positions in the old debate about the control of social processes via buildings and other technical artifacts - or, more generally, about material form and social content

Abstract: Abstract: "This volume, the third in the ZUMA-Nachrichten-Spezial series on methodological issues in empirical social science research, is devoted to issues of cross-cultural methodology. The focus is on issues of equivalence, the key requirement in cross-national and cross-cultural comparative research. As the contributions indicate, equivalence is, however, better thought of in terms of equivalencies - in social science surveys and in other standardised instruments of measurement. Contributors come from different countries and continents and from widely differing research backgrounds, ranging from linguistics to survey research and its methodologies, to cultural anthropology and cross-cultural psychology." Abstract: Abstract: "In cross-cultural (and cross-national) survey research, the equivalence of survey questions rivals the importance of their reliability and validity. This paper presents a review of the multiple dimensions of equivalence that must be addressed when conducting comparative survey research. Available methodologies for establishing one or more forms of equivalence are also identified and the strengths and limitations of each approach are examined. It is concluded that multiple methodologies must be implemented in order to insure the cross-cultural equivalence of survey measures." (author's abstract)

Abstract: Abstract: "Bias refers to the presence of nuisance factors in cross-cultural research. Three types of bias are distinguished, depending on whether the nuisance factor is located at the level of the construct (construct bias), the measurement instrument as a whole (method bias) or the items (item bias or differential item functioning). Equivalence refers to the measurement level characteristics that apply to cross-cultural score comparisons; three types of equivalence are defined: construct (identity of constructs across cultures), measurement unit (identity of measurement unit), and scalar equivalence (identity of measurement unit and scale origin). Bias often jeopardizes equivalence. Implications of the occurrence of bias on equivalence are described. Examples of how equivalence can be enhanced in multilingual studies are given." Abstract: Abstract: "The question of functional equivalence in internationally comparative surveys is discussed from the viewpoint of secondary analysis. A number of data-analytical procedures - ranging from a comparison of means over establishing correlations with third variables in individual countries to Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) - are discussed and used to check problems in functional equivalence in an item battery on gender roles. The data base consists of several national samples (Italian, German, American, British and Hungarian) of the 1988 International Social Survey Programme study on Family and Changing Gender Roles. It is concluded that (1) ex post checking of functional equivalence is useful and necessary because (2) the related problems might have less to do with translation than with ambiguities of the concepts and/or formulations used in source instruments and with differences in the social and economic realities in the respective countries, but that (3) even secondary-analytic str

Abstract: Abstract: "Three notions of item equivalency are distinguished. They correspond to the back-translation approach, the psychometric IRT approach, and the facet-theoretical approach. The latter defines equivalent item as items that answer the same questions. The question, then, is explicated in terms of its design. This yields the item's blueprint. One can extract such blueprints by studying given items, but the result is generally not unique. Nevertheless, it makes it possible to predict empirical regularities for the items and, therefore, tests for equivalency. If the tests fail, however, item non-equivalency is just one possible explanation. Design-equivalency is, on the other hand, a definitional issue, not an empirical one. The enmpirical issue is the design's usefulness for a particular purpose, usually for answering the research question." (author's abstract)

Three scenarios of future societal developments in both countries are considered. It is argued that the future will be primarily influenced, in the Czech Republic, by its ability to join the European Union, &, in Germany, by its ability to successfully integrate the former German Democratic Republic into the economic & social system of the Federal Republic. Abstract: Abstract: Draws on a 1993 survey of adults in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, & Slovakia (N = 4,500+ in each country) to examine everyday social inequality in postcommunist Central & Eastern Europe. Living conditions are operationalized in terms of material & cultural consumption, & their possible demographic & structural determinants are investigated. Variations among countries (eg, Hungary's greater inequality of living conditions) are partly accounted for by type & age of economic transformation, continuing strength of the old distributive hierarchy, & importance of the informal economy. Intranational differences are explained only moderately by income (moreso in Hungary & Poland) & are significantly related to education & class. Class & occupation are particularly useful for analyzing inconsistent consumption; eg, high cultural combined with low material consumption is most common among certain white-collar professions, while market-oriented employment is associate

Rather than to provide a comprehensive enumeration of all computer-assisted text analysis investigations either directly or indirectly related to the social sciences using a quantitative and computer-assisted methodology as their text analytical tool, the aim of this report is to describe the current methodological standpoint of computer-assisted text analysis in the social sciences.

Abstract: Abstract: Draws on recent modernization theory & discussions of postmodernity to suggest a theoretical approach to the analysis of postcommunist institutional change in Central & Eastern Europe. Modernization is taken to be an evolutionary process in the direction of societal subsystem functional differentiation with institutional features such as economic extensification & intensification, social mobility, specialization, functionalization of values, & (sometimes) institutionalization of conflicts. This framework is applied to assess intended & unintended social consequences of economic transformation in the Czech Republic. It is concluded that simultaneous economic & political modernization are causing interinstitutional conflicts, resolution of which requires a legitimate arena for voicing social claims &/or the creation of intermediary capacities to avert direct institutional confrontation

Abstract: Abstract: Draws on a variety of statistical data to discuss how the postcommunist transformation in Central & Eastern Europe is affecting the social & economic situation of women, concluding that a consistent leftist family & gender agenda has never been articulated. It is argued that women's educational & labor market opportunities were improved under state socialism, but family policy was streaked with conservatism & implemented in a top-down manner that discouraged women's political participation & power. During transformation, conservative trends & economic hardship are negatively impacting women in the areas of economic participation, reproductive rights, & social policy. Poverty among women & children is growing. Opportunity exists in the form of new civil & political rights, but, to date, women have not organized around their interests in substantial numbers

Are these questions even relevant for somebody who has grown up among different cultures and whose life history means they have different possibilities of where to locate themselves? How does the course of one's life history and the biographical constellation lead to a national or ethnic sense of belonging or affiliation becoming a central theme? The life histories of Israeli Jews originating from a multicultural area of Central and Eastern Europe who were labelled as Jewish during the period of Nazi persecution - regardless of their own self-definition - and who are now a part of a multicultural majority, are ideal for reconstructing the conditions required for developing a multicultural identity as well as a multicultural habitus (disposition). Abstract: Abstract: "In der Empirischen Sozialforschung finden in Europa Telefoninterviews anstelle von face to face-Interviews zunehmende Verbreitung.

Abstract: Abstract: The belief in occult forces is still deeply rooted in many African societies, regardless of education, religion, and social class of the people concerned. According to many Africans its incidence is even increasing due to social stress and strain caused (among others) by the process of modernization. Most often magic and witchcraft accusations work to the disadvantage of the poor and deprived, but under particular circumstances they become a means of the poor in the struggle against oppression by establishing "cults of counterviolence." Magic and witchcraft beliefs have increasingly been instrumentalized for political purposes. Apparently they can be used to support any kind of political system, whether despotic or democratic. The belief in occult forces has serious implications for development cooperation. Development projects, which constitute arenas of strategic groups in their struggle for power and control over project resources, are likely to add further social stress to an a

Abstract: Abstract: Ecological-evolutionary theory offers a distinctive perspective on societal change, ie, it draws attention to the enormous & revolutionary power of technological innovations as a source of change. In this light, some implications for European postcommunist societies in the context of transformation are considered. Ecological-evolutionary theory also offers a distinctive perspective on human nature; implications of this are discussed

Abstract: Abstract: Posits that the role of women as the bearers of strategies to transform the public sphere within the private sphere has been ignored but assumed in the context of postcommunist social transformation in the Czech Republic because of the omission of the public, private, & gender concepts as analytical sociological tools. The private-public relationship in modern society is addressed as an open process in which gender relations are not only formed, but in return, also form the connotations of these spheres according to gender understanding. On this theoretical base, possible ways of rethinking the model of the bourgeois family, which, in Czech society, has a normative power, are suggested with reference to Hanna Arendt's & Jurgen Habermas's concepts. Thus, the current process of socialism under changing conditions can be dealt with as a complex problem of interrelations between the private & public spheres

Abstract: Abstract: Analysis of the Czech historical experience suggests theoretical generalization on global postcommunist societal transformation, seen as complex social transformation & modernization. It is argued that while the postcommunist transformation of Czech society has so far been successful, this is the result of the abandonment, postponement, or mitigation of some aspects of the originally presupposed radical liberal democratic changes. It is concluded that the long-term prospects of Czech society depend mainly on the ability of the social & institutional system to stimulate significant progress toward qualitative modernization, possible only through the creation of a dynamic social equilibrium generating a motivation structure based on social relationships influenced by principles of equity of chances & meritocracy

Abstract: Abstract: Describes how the political system in the former USSR achieved its goal of disrupting the foundation, structure, & functioning of society, detailing the impact that political systems have on social behavioral patterns. Demographic behavior & the influence of political decisions on the degree of social response are described, & it is suggested that society retains a considerable degree of autonomy in spite of inconsistencies & fluctuations of political decision making. The role of statistical administration is examined, & several hypotheses that suggest an increasing gap between political behavior & individuals in society are presented

Abstract: Abstract: Subjective judgments of social & economic mobility in Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, & the Czech Republic are investigated in an analysis of data gathered by the international comparative study, Social Stratification in Eastern Europe after 1989. It is found that in all 6 countries, a sense of improved social position is correlated with social characteristics such as a lower age group & higher level education & profession, while a sense of declining social position is linked with the inverse of these characteristics. However, the sense of social deprivation does seem to be less in the Czech Republic than in other countries; factors contributing to this are identified
