In the first book of its kind, Bassel and Emejulu explore minority women's experiences of and resistances to austerity measures in France and Britain. Minority women are often portrayed as passive victims. However, Minority women and austerity demonstrates how they use their race, class, gender and legal status as a resource for collective action in the face of the neoliberal colonisation of non-governmental organisations, the failures of left-wing politics and the patronising initiatives of policy-makers. Using in-depth case studies, this book explores the changing relations between the state, the market and civil society which create opportunities and dilemmas for minority women activists. Through an intersectional 'politics of survival' these women seek to subvert the dominant narratives of 'crisis' and 'activism'.

    Abstract: This cross-disciplinary collection, a project by the Chimaera Research Group for Human-Animal Studies, is the first German-language publication to dedicate itself to the diverse questions around animal agency and spheres of influence. Human-Animal Studies thus occupy a void in the previous research around the central concept of agency, which is on the agenda of the most diverse disciplines. In the process, controversially debated approaches that transcend anthropocentrism, such as actor-network theory and the new materialism, are for the first time focused explicitly on animal actors.

    Abstract: Der aktuelle Kulturbegriff der Kulturwissenschaften definiert die Situation des Menschen als ein Problem, das in der aktuellen Lage der Gesellschaft nach neuen Formulierungen sucht. Kulturreflexion heißt dann, die Kultur als eine Ressource der Verständigung auf offene Fragen zu verstehen und sie in dieser Form der Weltgesellschaft bei der Suche nach einer neuen Selbstbeschreibung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Beiträge zeigen, dass bei der Modernisierung des Kulturbegriffs Rückgriffe auf philosophische Begriffe eine ebenso große Rolle spielen wie Beobachtungen künstlerischer Projekte und Beschreibungen historischer Prozesse.
