Abstract: Have women always been subordinated? If not, why and how did women's subordination develop? Kinship to Kingship was the first book to examine in detail how and why gender relations become skewed when classes and the state emerge in a society. Using a Marxist-feminist approach, Christine Ward Gailey analyzes women's status in one society over three hundred years, from a period when kinship relations organized property, work, distribution, consumption, and reproduction to a class-based state society. Although this study focuses on one group of islands, Tonga, in the South Pacific, the author discusses processes that can be seen through the neocolonial world. This ethnohistorical study argues that evolution from a kin-based society to one organized along class lines necessarily entails the subordination of women. And the opposite is also held to be true: state and class formation cannot be understood without analyzing gender and the status of women. Of interest to students of anthropology, political science, sociology, and women's studies, this work is a major contribution to social history

Abstract: Research and practice in the field of acculturation psychology is continually on the rise. Featuring contributions from over fifty leading experts in the field, this handbook compiles and systemizes the current state of the art by exploring the broad international scope of acculturation. The collection introduces readers to the concepts and issues; examines various acculturating groups (immigrants, ethnic minorities, indigenous peoples, expatriates, tourists, refugees and asylum seekers); highlights the global contexts for acculturation in a variety of societies; and focuses on acculturation of a number of special groups, such as young people, the workplace, and outcomes for health and well-being. This comprehensive new edition addresses major world changes over the last decade, including the increase in global migration, religious clashes, and social networking, and provides updated theories and models so that beginners and advanced readers can keep abreast of new developments in the study of acculturation

Abstract: "Recent global security threats, economic instability, and political uncertainty have placed great scrutiny on the requirements for U.S. citizenship. The stipulation of literacy has long been one of these criteria. In Producing Good Citizens, Amy J. Wan examines the historic roots of this phenomenon, looking specifically to the period just before World War I, up until the Great Depression. During this time, the United States witnessed a similar anxiety over the influx of immigrants, economic uncertainty, and global political tensions. Early on, educators bore the brunt of literacy training, while also being charged with producing the right kind of citizens by imparting civic responsibility and a moral code for the workplace and society. Literacy quickly became the credential to gain legal, economic, and cultural status. In her study, Wan defines three distinct pedagogical spaces for literacy training during the 1910s and 1920s: Americanization and citizenship programs sponsored by the federal government, union-sponsored programs, and first year university writing programs. Wan also demonstrates how each literacy program had its own motivation: the federal government desired productive citizens, unions needed educated members to fight for labor reform, and university educators looked to aid social mobility. Citing numerous literacy theorists, Wan analyzes the correlation of reading and writing skills to larger currents within American society. She shows how early literacy training coincided with the demand for laborers during the rise of mass manufacturing, while also providing an avenue to economic opportunity for immigrants. This fostered a rhetorical link between citizenship, productivity, and patriotism. Wan supplements her analysis with an examination of citizen training books, labor newspapers, factory manuals, policy documents, public deliberations on citizenship and literacy, and other materials from the period to reveal the goal and rationale behind each program. Wan relates the enduring bond of literacy and citizenship to current times, by demonstrating the use of literacy to mitigate economic inequality, and its lasting value to a productivity-based society. Today, as in the past, educators continue to serve as an integral part of the literacy training and citizen-making process"--

Abstract: Bratina studied a group of Latino males to examine how attitudes that endorse the use of violence are influenced by assimilation. The sample was partially derived from Social Networking Sites (SNS) including MySpace and Facebook. The primary expectation was that pro-violent attitudes would vary depending on level of assimilation. Bratina expected a significant positive relationship between highly assimilated Latinos and pro-violent attitudes. By-and-large, endorsement of violence was low among this overwhelmingly assimilated group; however, multivariate analyses revealed a different picture. R

Abstract: "The interactions of the Celtic-speaking communities of Southern Gaul with the Mediterranean world have intrigued commentators since antiquity. This book combines sociolinguistics and archaeology to bring to life the multilingualism and multiple identities of the region from the foundation of the Greek colony of Massalia in 600 BC to the final phases of Roman Imperial power. It builds on the interest generated by the application of modern bilingualism theory to ancient evidence by modelling language contact and community dynamics and adopting an innovative interdisciplinary approach. This produces insights into the entanglements and evolving configurations of a dynamic zone of cultural contact. Key foci of contact-induced change are exposed and new interpretations of cultural phenomena highlight complex origins and influences from the entire Mediterranean koine. Southern Gaul reveals itself to be fertile ground for considering the major themes of multilingualism, ethnolinguistic vitality, multiple identities, colonialism and Mediterraneanization"--

Abstract: Contact between cultures has been understood in various ways and this particular volume considers the European cultural, social, scientific, philosophical and political contexts framing encounter. All of the essays thus look at the different ways in which individuals and institutions work these contexts into their representations of contact settings. In Part 1, the conventional stance is adopted where encounter is understood as taking place elsewhere and not on European soil. The chapters ex

Abstract: The basic concern of border studies is to examine and analyze interactions that occur when two groups come into contact with one another. Acculturation and globalization are at the heart of border studies, and cultural studies scholars try to describe the possible interactions in terms of conflicts and resolutions that become the result of those possible encounters. The present book is a peer-reviewed selection of papers presented during the IV Crossing Over Symposium at Cleveland State Unive

Abstract: The Nyakyusa and Ngonde collection covers cultural, economic and historical information, circa 1875 to 1983. Most of the documents in the collection were written by the husband-wife team of Godfrey and Monica Wilson based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in 1934-1938. The basic introduction to Nyakyusa society and culture is Godfrey Wilson's "An Introduction to Nyakyusa society". The information in this document is further enriched by the works of Monica Wilson which, together, provide a comprehensive first-hand account of Nyakyusa culture and society as observed in mid-1930s. Main themes covered in these works include social and economic structure of a Nyakyusa age-village, communal rituals related to burials, marriage, birth, misfortunes, etc, relationship of religion to Nyakyusa social structure, changes in generational and gender relations, and traditional land tenure systems. The collection also includes two other documents that focus on the Ngonde. These documents cover the traditional political structure of Ngonde society and aspects of socioeconomic change since 18th century. Finally, the collection also includes one essay which seeks to re-evaluate some of the key arguments in the earlier work by the Wilsons. The focus is on dynamics of kinship and chieftainship in age-villages, a uniquely Nyakyusa residence pattern in which a cohort of boys establish their own village settlement in previously uninhabited land

Abstract: The Terena collection consists of several documents from English, German, and Portuguese Oberg is a study of culture change in Terena society resulting from contact and interaction with the Caduveo, the Mbayá, and Brazilian culture in general. The theme of culture change is continued in Oliveira, which attempts to record and interpret the processes of social interaction between Terena and Brazilian society with the goal of determining the operative socio-cultural mechanism affecting the more specific process of assimilation. Baldus is a study of the succession to chieftainship within a Terena group living near the city of Miranda in the southern part of the Brazilian Mato Grosso. This study also contains some incidental information on such aspects of Terena ethnography as names and naming, eschatology, conception and pregnancy, marriage regulations and arrangements, and kinship terminology and relationships. The second work included by Oliveira is a structural analysis of the Terena marriage and social stratification system

Abstract: "This book revisits and updates some classic Anthropology - the Xhosa in Town series - based on research in the South African city of East London conducted during the 1950s. The original studies concluded that there were two opposed responses to urbanisation in East London's African locations, one embracing Westernisation, European values and Christianity and another opposed to it. The studies have been the subject of intense anthropological debate. Leslie Bank returned to the areas of East London studied in the 1950s to assess how social and political changes have transformed these areas, in particular the apartheid reconstruction of the 1960s and 1970s and the struggle for liberation followed by the post-Apartheid period in the 1980s and 1990s. Bank has added important theoretical insights to this rich ethnography, and forged strong links with issues that transcend the particularities of his urban study."--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Getting Ahead tells the compelling stories of Latin-American immigrant women living in public housing in two Boston-area neighborhoods. Silvia Domínguez argues that these immigrant women parlay social ties that provide support and leverage to develop networks and achieve social positioning to get ahead. Through a rich ethnographic account and in-depth interviews, the strong voices of these women demonstratehow they successfully negotiate the world and achieve social mobility through their own individual agency, skillfullynavigating both constraints and opportunities. Domínguez makes it clear that many immigrant women are able to develop the social support needed for a rich social life, and leverage ties that open options for them to develop their social and human capital. However, she also shows that factors such as neighborhood and domestic violence and the unavailability of social services leave many women without the ability to strategize towards social mobility. Ultimately, Domínguez makes important local and international policy recommendations on issue ranging from public housing to world labor visas, demonstrating how policy can help to improve the lives of these and other low-income people.

All traffic, and commerce, whether economic or intellectual, between Western anthropologists and the rest of the world, is predicated upon the possibility of establishing reciprocal relations between the West and the indigenous peoples it has colonized for centuries

Abstract: "Cultural Globalization: A User's Guide is a personal and idiosyncratic journey through theories of culture and globalization. Drawing on diverse research literature from the fields of anthropology, cultural studies, cultural geography, and media studies, J. Macgregor Wise presents a new perspective through which to raise questions about globalization, a perspective framed by the concepts of territory, identity, and culture." "This book draws upon a myriad of examples from Asian, European, and North American youth culture and popular music. It is a vivid reminder that global processes are a part of who we are and what we do, and that these same processes carry with them the ethical questions of how to act in the world and how to care for others."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: This collection of eight documents is about the Western Woods Cree who lived aboriginally in the boreal forests from Hudson and James Bays westward to the Peace River in Canada. In the early twenty-first century they are found primarily in the region between Lake Superior and Hudson Bay. Mason provides an overview of the Western Woods Cree ethnography; Smith (1981) presents a brief summary of some of the major features of their ethnography dating from the seventeenth to the late twentieth centuries, with an emphasis on the western Swampy and Rocky Cree populations. Two of the studies in this collection by Smith (1976, 1987) discuss and analyze the ethnological 'myth' dealing with the movement of the Western Woods Cree to the southwest areas at the time of the initial Euro-American contact. According to this belief French and English guns gave the Cree technological superiority over their neighbors to the west and southwest and permitted them to move easily into the conquered lands. Evidence for pottery making at the time of early Euro-American contacts is discussed by Meyer. Fisher describes the socio-cultural evolution of the hunting band discussed in terms of social, ecological, and historical variables within the society. Hallowell presents a study of cross-cousin marriage in relationship to the kinship system

Abstract: Central to the aim of both this book is to rethink the concept of diaspora as it is used both academically and popularly at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It seeks to interrogate the notion of "diaspora" in an interdisciplinary way, and to explore the contradictions inherent in contemporary notions of place and identity. It presents explorations of both "traditional" diasporas, such as the Irish community in the United States and in Great Britain, as well as recently established d...

Abstract: Breaking with prevailing scholarship, Deciphering the Global relocates the terms of debate surrounding globalization from the heights of global markets, states, and international corporations to the messier, more complex ground of the local, where broad globalizing trends are negotiated in interesting and often unexpected ways. Each of the essays in Saskia Sassen's collection introduces a new type of complexity and ambiguity to the study of the global, confronting questions of space and the fact that both the local and the global are increasingly multi-scalar. In turn, the chapters in this book expand the analytical terrain of the global, demanding new methodologies and interpretive frames for the study of globalization. Employing ethnographies from the United States to continental Europe, Asia, and South America, Deciphering the Global exemplifies the next wave of globalization studies and lays the groundwork for a new school in the study of the global.

Wierzbicki examines the presence and homogeneity of ties among the foreign- and native-born of different ethnic groups. She finds that the foreign-born consistently report fewer ties than the native-born, in part because of less education or shorter duration of residence. The foreign-born also have more ethnically homogeneous ties, even when they live outside enclaves and in wealthier areas. This finding has implications for theories of assimilation or incorporation. For lack of network data, previous examination of assimilation has often relied on patterns of residential settlement rather than actual social ties. This study indicates that the foreign-born may assimilate spatially but not socially

Abstract: Annotation, Are there multiple ways of being "modern" in the world today? How do people in various parts of the world become modern in their own distinct ways? Does the current focus on modernity in the social sciences resurrect a series of dichotomies ("traditional" and "modern, " "the West" and "the Rest, " "developed" and "undeveloped") that social theorists have sought to move beyond in recent years? Or do inflections of modernity capture key features of ideology and influence in the contemporary world? Combining rich ethnographic analysis with incisive theoretical critiques, this timely volume is certain to make an important mark in anthropology and in all related fields in which modernity is a central problematic

Abstract: Annotation This book provides fresh insight into the placement, and displacement, of particular social groups, including guest workers, migrants, and immigrants. Ilcan covers the varieties of diasporic relations and the settlements they form, as well as the manifold ways in which they affect traditional practices of settlement. She considers the cultural, economic, and political implications of globalization, evoking the struggle in our "places" of habitation, and the strategies deployed to subvert our habits of settlement
