    Abstract: Is death merely the cessation of life? Are our final years simply a wearing out of the body? Are hospitals and funeral homes - the bureaucratic machinery of death - capable of handling the profound spiritual dimension of dying? In The Last Passage, Donald Heinz offers answers to these questions in a book that urges us to "recover a death of our own" and to view our final years as a fulfillment, a "last career." Seeking appropriate models for such a reconstruction, Heinz offers a fascinating overview of the many ways death has been envisioned and ritualized throughout human history, from the Tibetan Book of the Dead to 15th/century Christian ars moriendi - manuals on the art of dying - and from Jean Paul Sartre to Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Finally, Heinz shows us how we might create rituals through the use of music, visual arts, dance, drama, and language that would enable us to approach death with reverence, as the spiritual consummation of our lives

In traditional societies, relationships and identities were strongly vertical: there was a clear line of authority from top to bottom, and identity was fixed by one's birth or social position. But in modern society, identity and authority have become much more horizontal: people feel freer to choose who they are and to form relationships on a plane of equality. The author examines how modern life centers on human identity seen in terms of race, gender, ethnicity, and religion, and how this new way of defining oneself affects politics, social structure, and the law. He claims that our horizontal society is the product of the mass media -- in particular, television -- which break down the isolation of traditional life and allow individuals to connect with like-minded others across barriers of space and time. As horizontal groups blossom, loyalties and allegiances to smaller groups fragment what seemed to be the unity of the larger nation.     Abstract: A basic motivation for social and cultural life is the problem of death. By analysing the experiences of dying and bereaved people, as well as institutional responses to death, Clive Seale shows its importance for understanding the place of embodiment in social life. He draws on a comprehensive review of sociological, anthropological and historical studies, including his own research, to demonstrate the great variability that exists in human social constructions for managing mortality. Far from living in a 'death denying' society, dying and bereaved people in contemporary culture are often able to assert membership of an imagined community, through the narrative reconstruction of personal biography, drawing on a variety of cultural scripts emanating from medicine, psychology, the media and other sources. These insights are used to argue that the maintenance of the human social bond in the face of death is a continual resurrective practice, permeating everyday life

Wenn aber keine simultane Ver­ änderung nachweisbar ist, sondern vielmehr ungleichzeitiger Wandel einzelner Bereiche - welcher Teilprozeß führt dann zu einer stärkeren Individualisierung? 4. Variiert das Ausmaß der Individualisierung mit dem sozialen Status, sei er über Bildung, Einkommen oder Macht gemessen? Welche geschlechtsspezifischen Unterschiede lassen sich nachweisen? 5. Welche gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen sind es genau, aus deren Zwängen das Individuum entlassen wurde und - wichtiger noch - in welcher Form haben sie das Verhalten der Individuen beeinflußt? Es sind demnach sowohl die Art der Verhaltensrestriktionen als auch deren Wirkungsmechanismus zu bestimmen.     Abstract: This book provides a concise, up-to-date survey of one of the most dramatic changes in the cultural life of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, the radical transformation which occurred in the extent and nature of its participation in sport. Neil Tranter focuses on the issues which have attracted most interest from historians of sport and poses a number of important questions: did levels of involvement in sport increase or decrease during the initial stages of urban-industrialisation? When did the new sporting culture first emerge, and what were its principal features and the mechanisms through which it spread? What were the main aims of the participants and supporters, and to what extent were these aims achieved? The author also discusses the economic consequences of this cultural change and the examines the role of women in this sporting 'revolution' and asks why their participation was so much more restricted than that of men

    Abstract: Abstract: "Die Problematik des Verhältnisses von Individuum und Gesellschaft wird derzeit von zwei gegenläufigen Positionen her gedeutet: als Inklusion im Sinne der Luhmannschen Theorie funktionaler Differenzeirung und als Integration im Sinne des Strukturfunktionalismus. Insbesondere das zweite Konzept steht derzeit Pate für die zeitdiagnostische Deutung von Krisenphänomenen der Gegenwartsgesellschaft, die als Desintegrationsprobleme konzipiert werden (Stichworte: Politikverdrossenheit, Lebenstildiffusion, Gewalt, Rechtsextremismus, Zukunftsangst, neue Armut etc.). Die Inklusionstheorie systemtheoretischer Provenienz dagegen vermittelt oft den Eindruck, als bestünden solche Probleme gar nicht, als habe die Moderne mit dem allgemeienn Prinzip der Inklusion aller in alle Funktionssysteme eine geradezu unproblematische Form der Vergesellschaftung erreicht.     Abstract: Abstract: "Seit mehr als 20 Jahren wird von einigen Seiten der soziologischen community eine disziplinäre Neubestimmung der Soziologie angesichts der ökologischen Frage propagiert. Ein Paradigmenwechsel hin zu einer ökologischen Soziologie wäre notwendig (Catton/ Dunlap), zu einer 'sociology in which nature matters' (Murphy). Dabei ist allerdings äußerst unklar, wie diese Integration der Natur-Gesellschafts-Differenz gesellschaftstheoretisch erfolgen soll. Geht man nicht von vornherein davon aus, daß die Soziologie bei der Analyse gesellschaftlich verursachter Umweltzerstörungen mit ihren disziplinspezifischen Mitteln das Auslangen finden kann, dann müssen solche Versuche verstärkt hinsichtlich ihrer Stärken und Schwächen diskutiert werden. Das Spektrum dieser Integrationsversuche ist allerdings ebenso breit wie unausgearbeitet und unterscheidet sich z.B. nach dem jeweiligen, disziplinspezifischen Denkmuster zur Umweltschädlichkeit menschlichen Handelns und gesellschaftlicher Organisation.     Abstract: Fate and Fortune in Rural China is a major contribution to the study of both the social and population history of late traditional China, and that of historical demography in general. Lee and Campbell use the example of Liaoning to demonstrate the interaction between demographic and other social pressures, and to illustrate graphically the nature of social mobility and social organization in rural China over the course of the century from 1774–1873. Their conclusion - that social norms, rooted in ideology, determined demographic performance - is supported by a mass of hitherto inaccessible primary data. The authors show how the Chinese state articulated two different principles of social hierarchy, heredity and ability, through two different social organizations: households and banners. These different boundary conditions, each the explicit creation of the state, gave rise to contrasting demographic behaviour.

    Abstract: Abstract: "Mir sind keine Meinungsforschungsuntersuchungen darüber bekannt, wie die Einstellungen der europäischen Bevölkerung zur deutschen Einheit aussehen. In Ermangelung empirischer Daten ist man auf die Meinungen verwiesen, die in der Tagespresse erscheinen. Grundsätzlich können Meinungen und Einstellungen schwach oder stark begründet sein, aber auch schwach begründete Meinungen beeinflussen das Verhalten, wie dies bei Vorurteilen der Fall ist.     Abstract: Abstract: "Bei der Entstehung der neuen Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung in den postsozialistischen Ländern handelt es sich um die Umverteilung von Reichtum, der in der Gewalt des Staates war. Lediglich durch diese Umverteilung ist die Entstehung der neuen Eliten möglich. Deshalb stehen die Umgestaltungsmuster betrieblicher Sozialorganisation einerseits und ihre Auswirkungen auf die o.a. Umverteilung andererseits im Mittelpunkt unseres Forschungsinteresses. In einer von der Volkswagen-Stiftung geförderten empirischen Studie zu den betrieblichen Transformationsmustern in Polen, Ungarn und Bulgarien sind wir u.a. diesen Fragen nachgegangen. Interviewt wurden über 100 Vertreter der Unternehmensleitungen und der Interessenvertretungen der Beschäftigten in zwei Wellen(1993 und 1994).     Abstract: Abstract: Als Einleitung zu dem vom Autor herausgegebenen Sammelwerk werden die grundlegenden Kategorien in ihrem theoretischen Kontext erläutert und im Hinblick auf den ethnographischen Ansatz diskutiert. Es wird davon ausgegangen, daß die Zunahme der alltäglichen Kommunikation neue Konventionen ausbildet, die eigene kommunikative Lebenswelten gestalten. Als kommunikative Lebenswelt werden die im kommunikativen Handeln erzeugten sozialen Strukturen bezeichnet, die ihre Beständigkeit durch feste Kommunikationsformen (Alltagskommunikation) sichern. Die Beschreibung dieser kleinen Lebenswelten - lokaler Kulturen - von Menschen ist Gegenstand ethnographischer Studien. Ausgehend von der Annahme einer "geschwätzigen Gesellschaft" setzen sich die Beiträge des Sammelbandes mit der Bedeutungszunahme der Kommunikation in einzelnen Lebenswelten auseinander. (DY)

    Abstract: Abstract: "Die allgemeine soziologische Theorie der Parsons-Tradition ging von einer Kohärenz der gesellschaftlichen Ordnungen von Wirtschaft, Recht und Politik aus. Die zugrundegelegten Modelle einer funktionalen Differenzierung und sozialen Integration waren am Idealtyp westlicher, nationalstaatlich verfaßter Gesellschaften orientiert. Aufgrund ihres universalistischen Zuschnitts beanspruchten diese Modelle, für alle Gesellschaftsformen zuständig zu sein und wenn nicht die Gegenwart, so doch die Zukunft des konkurrierenden 'östlichen Modernisierungsmusters' wie auch die Modernisierungschancen nicht-westlicher Gesellschaften zu repräsentieren. Die Desintegration des sozialistischen Staatensystems hat jedoch nicht zur erwarteten Annäherung der postkommunistischen Gesellschaften an das 'OECD-Profil' geführt.
