Abstract: Informed by ongoing research, this handsome publication features the work of artists connected with the Royal Academy in an exploration of migration, exchange, artistic traditions, identity and belonging. Contemporary and historical works are brought together as part of a conversation about art and its role in shaping narratives of empire, enslavement, abolition and colonialism, and how it may help set a course for the future. The life-size painted cut-out figures of Lubaina Himid's installation Naming the Money; Hew Locke's Armada, a flotilla of "votive boats" recalling different periods and places; paintings, photographs, sculptures, drawings and prints by Sonia Boyce, Frank Bowling, John Akomfrah, Isaac Julien, El Anatsui, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, Shahzia Sikander, Mohini Chandra and Betye Saar; and historical works by artists such as Joshua Reynolds, J.M.W. Turner and John Singleton Copley create connections across time that examine questions of power, representation and history

Abstract: Since its beginnings in Paris in the mid-19th century, the idea of bohemia, an urban community of artists and intellectuals living outside bourgeois norms, has been a potent trope of artistic identity. It was here that the notion of an unconventional, free-spirited life, precarious yet filled with idealism, was codified and romanticized. Bohemia: History of an Idea, 1950 – 2000 shows the continuities and differences between the scenes and subcultures of the second half of the twentieth century, when the mainstream began to appropriate and thereby erode a way of life predicated on its rejection. Nonetheless, as an alternative to conformity the bohemian idea has exerted an enduring fascination. Through works by 39 artists, including Alice Neel, PeterHujar, John Deakin, David Wojnarowicz, Ed van der Elsken, Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, William Gedney, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Nan Goldin, Zhang Huan and Wolfgang Tillmans, the publication explores the diversity of expressions in various cities in Europe, North America and Asia and shows that the bohemian idea continues to galvanize and inspire

Abstract: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.00Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions. Together, the participating artists and invited authors unfold the blueprint of 'Congoville', an imaginary city that still subconsciously affects us, but also encourages us to envision a decolonial utopia.00With contributions by: Pieter Boons, Sandrine Colard, Filip De Boeck, Bas De Roo, Nadia Yala Kisukidi, Sorana Munsya & Léonard Pongo, Herman Van Goethem, Sara Weyns, Nabilla Ait Daoud.00Participating artists: Sammy Baloji, Bodys Isek Kingelez, Maurice Mbikayi, Jean Katambayi, KinAct Collective, Simone Leigh, Hank Willis Thomas, Zahia Rahmani, Ibrahim Mahama, Ângela Ferreira, Kapwani Kiwanga, Sven Augustijnen, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Elisabetta Benassi, Pélagie Gbaguidi

Abstract: This groundbreaking volume examines the extraordinary artistic and cultural traditions of the African region known as the Sahel ("shore" in Arabic), a vast area on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert that includes present-day Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad. This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the diverse cultural achievements and traditions of the region, spanning more than 1,300 years from the pre-Islamic period through the 19th century. It features some of the earliest extant art from Africa as well as such iconic works as sculptures by the Dogon and Bamana peoples of Mali. Essays by leading international scholars discuss the art, architecture, archaeology, literature, philosophy, religion, and history of the Sahel, exploring the unique cultural landscape in which these ancient communities flourished. Richly illustrated and brilliantly argued, Sahel brings to life the enduring creativity of the different peoples who lived, traded, and traveled through this crossroads of the world.

Abstract: "Through the chapters of this volume important traces of Hindu and Buddhist thought in Western Modernism become clear: from art to music, dance, psychology, theatre and architecture. We find an intriguing interplay between the artistic, scientific, cultural and spiritual spheres-from both Asia and Europe-mediated by extraordinary personalities such as Anna Pavlova, Léon Bakst, Helena Blavatsky, Annie Besant, Wassily Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova, Rabindranath Tagore, Ananda Coomaraswamy and C.G. Jung."--Preface (page 7)

Abstract: This small but lavishly illustrated book showcases a selection of works which illustrate the breadth and depth of queer art from around the world. Exploring identity, eroticism, relationships, hidden desires, love and gender through drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and film, it tells the story of queer art from 1900 to the present, revealing how experiences have also been shaped by class and ethnicity, and how art itself has played a key role in changing attitudes and crystalising identities. From the deeply personal to the political or emotive, each work is beautifully reproduced with a short text explaining its wider social and cultural context, and what 'queer' means in different historic and contemporary contexts. 0Including works from a variety of artists - among them Egon Schiele, Duncan Grant, Romaine Brooks, Edward Burra, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, David Hockney, Diane Arbus, Francis Bacon, Bhupen Khakhar, Zanele Muholi, Allyson Mitchell and Tomoko Kashiki - all of whom found new freedom in radical ideas and new art forms, A Queer Little History of Art is a true celebration of over 100 years of queer art, as well as the LGBT community that has embraced it

Abstract: The archive is a source of power. It takes control of the past, deciding which voices will be heard and which won’t, how they will be heard and for what purposes. Indigenous archivists were at work well before the European Enlightenment arrived and began its own archiving. Sometimes at odds, other times not, these two ways of ordering the world have each learned from, and engaged with, the other. Colonialism has been a struggle over archives and its processes as much as anything else. The eighteen essays by twenty authors investigate different aspects of this struggle in Australia, from traditional Indigenous archives and their developments in recent times to the deconstruction of European archives by contemporary artists as acts of cultural empowerment. It also examines the use of archives developed for other reasons, such as the use of rainfall records to interpret early Papunya paintings. Indigenous Archives is the first overview of archival research in the production and understanding of Indigenous culture. Wide-ranging in its scope, it reveals the lively state of research into Indigenous histories and culture in Australia

Abstract: From the ancient Etruscans and Romans, to the Renaissance masters of Michelangelo and Raphael, the Vatican Museums represent an aspect of the history of humanity through art. The Indigenous Australian collection is a little known and unexplored part of that story. Being amongst some of the earliest known documentations of Australian Indigenous cultures, the collection includes the earliest extant set of Pukumani poles from Melville and Bathurst Islands, alongside more recent contributions of artworks and cultural objects, and presents materials that have not been exhibited before in Australia. The responsibility to culturally reconnect relevant contemporary Indigenous communities to their material heritage held in the museum has been realised and is documented in this catalogue, which includes a catalogue of objects and essays by Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors. During the process of community visits and consultations, images of the objects brought old and young people together, instigating intergenerational dialogue about the past. Now, in collaboration with communities, the Indigenous collection can be seen in this catalogue and is represented at the heart of the Vatican Museums where the objects have become cultural ambassadors inviting others to come and learn more about Australian Indigenous cultures

Abstract: The long-standing Art in the Underground competition – an international call for artistic interventions on the Berlin Underground network – goes to the periphery. The project surfaces along the U5 line on Hellersdorf’s housing estates and poses the question: "What is outside?" The question is provocative, because not only can "outside" be seen as being spatial, as the edge of the city or periphery, but it can also be seen as reflecting a process of division in society, as those who still belong and those who do not. The publication connects the project group’s research with a presentation of the art works realised along the U5. Additional background texts and photographic observations provide a new perspective on large housing estates and the "outside city".

Abstract: Over the past thirty years, our ideas about the cultures of Empire have been transformed. Contemporary reflections on Empire by writers and artists are widely published and displayed, and museums have witnessed a growing number of exhibitions devoted to aspects of the rich and varied visual culture that emerged in places under British governance, from the Americas to India and Australasia. And yet, since the vast Imperial exhibitions of the early twentieth-century there has been no wide-ranging presentation of the objects made across the British Empire. This publication, which accompanies a major Tate Britain exhibition, fills that gap. Through broad groupings within thematic chapters - Mapping, Collecting, History, Portraiture, Cultural Exchange and the Return of Empire - leading scholars focus on how particular objects tell the history of life under British rule. Paintings by well-known artists such as John Singer Sargent and Sidney Nolan are illustrated alongside Benin bronze heads and Mughal miniatures in a survey that ranges from sixteenth century colonialism through to the projection of Britain's imperial might in the late nineteenth century to its decline in the post-war era. Exploring how artists have represented and critiqued the diverse places, people and events that make up the legacy of Empire, our expert authors have created a vital book on a subject of broad contemporary interest.
