    Abstract: This book examines public perception, public deliberation and media presentation of agricultural biotechnology and genetically modified foods. Part I (chapters 1-7) is a review of some of the studies of public opinion about agricultural biotechnology, especially genetically modified organisms. Part II (chapters 8-11) focuses on empirical tests of theories of opinion formation using biotechnology as a case study. Part III (chapters 12-16) provides examples of communication strategies designed to increase understanding of agricultural biotechnology and of practical communication strategies tested in international settings. This book is intended for researchers and policymakers, and those involved in agricultural biotechnology communication campaigns. It has a subject index.

    Abstract: This book focuses on the contributions that organic farming offers to wider social change. It considers the role of all those involved in creating an organic sector. By providing a range of quantitative and qualitative analyses of organic 'farm-to-fork' networks, the book shows how the way organic farming is practiced holds the potential for changes in industry structure - changes that may well form the basis for the food system in the 21st century. The book's 18 chapters are organized around five themes that reflect the continuing development of organic farming and the diversity of the sociological approach to organic food and farming. These themes include: (i) organic movements in northwestern Europe; (ii) organic food quality and the consumer; (iii) problems for organic farmers around the globe; (iv) principles and practice of organic farming; and (v) new directions for organic sector development.     Abstract: This book analyses the functions, content, methods, findings and impact of social and cultural research carried out by the worldwide network of 16 international agricultural research centres of the CGIAR. It brings together the perspectives of 50 eminent scholars and social researchers from 30 countries working within the centres or in outside academic and development institutions. The contributions examine critically the priorities, strengths, and weaknesses of research on the sociostructural, behavioural, cultural and institutional variables of developing agriculture, forestry, livestock and fisheries. The studies focus on farmers' values, needs, knowledge, their patterns of social organization, issues of food security, natural resource management and poverty reduction. Alternative models of multidisciplinary research, reuniting biological, natural, economic and social sciences, are scrutinized in the light of experience and results, with emphasis on the nature of social science research as a source of international public goods and a key contributor to induced development. The book is intended for researchers of agricultural and rural development, economics, sociology, culture and anthropology. It has 22 chapters in addition to an editors' preface, and has a subject index.

    Abstract: Over the last two decades there has been considerable enthusiasm for the concept of civil society amongst researchers, practitioners and activists. Despite this enthusiasm for the concept, however, the gendered nature of civil society and the impact of feminist organising on civil society has received minimal attention. Gender and Civil Society seeks to address this gap and considers: How does the political environment and nature of the state shape the way women organise, the issues they address, and their capacity to affect changes in state policies on gender? Is the women's movement structurally different from other civil society organisations? Does the gender lens alter our vision of civil society? The chapters in this volume each pursue two or more of these questions and cover a diversity of contexts, including the US, East and Central Europe, China, the Middle East, Africa, South East Asia, Central America and Chile. This book not only draws together the concepts of gender and civil society, but also adopts an international perspective, highlighting the diverse trajectories of women organising in different country contexts and the historical, cultural and political speci.cities of civil society. Jude Howell is Professor and Director of the Centre for Civil Society at the London School of Economics and Political Science.     Abstract: Feminist Political Ecology explores the gendered relations of ecologies, economies, and politics in communities as diverse as the rubber tappers in the rainforests of Brazil and activist groups fighting environmental racism in New York City. Environmental struggles occur throughout the world from industrial to agrarian societies. Women are often at the centre of these struggles concerning local knowledge, everyday practice, rights to resources, sustainable development, environmental quality, and social justice. This book bridges the gap between the academic and rural orientation of political ecology and the largely activist and urban focus of environmental justice movements. It aims to bring together the theoretical frameworks of feminist analysis with the specificities of women's activism and experiences around the world.
