    Abstract: How do we live in and with empire? The contributors to this book pursue this question by examining empire as an unequally shared present. Here empire stands as an entrenched, if often invisible, part of everyday life central to making and remaking a world in which it is too often presented as an aberration rather than as a structuring condition. This volume presents scholarship from across U.S. imperial formations: settler colonialism, overseas territories, communities impacted by U.S. military action of political intervention, Cold War alliances and fissures, and, most recently, new forms of U.S. empire after 9/11.     Abstract: In The Biopolitics of Feeling Kyla Schuller unearths the forgotten, multiethnic sciences of impressibility-the capacity to be transformed by one's environment and experiences-to uncover how biopower developed in the United States. Schuller challenges prevalent interpretations of biopower and literary cultures to reveal how biopower emerged within the discourses and practices of sentimentalism. Through analyses of evolutionary theories, gynecological sciences, abolitionist poetry and other literary texts, feminist tracts, child welfare reforms, and black uplift movements, Schuller excavates a vast apparatus that regulated the capacity of sensory and emotional feeling in an attempt to shape the evolution of the national population. Her historical and theoretical work exposes the overlooked role of sex difference in population management and the optimization of life, illuminating how models of binary sex function as one of the key mechanisms of racializing power. Schuller thereby overturns long-accepted frameworks of the nature of race and sex difference, offers key corrective insights to modern debates surrounding the equation of racism with determinism and the liberatory potential of ideas about the plasticity of the body, and reframes contemporary notions of sentiment, affect, sexuality, evolution, and heredity

    Abstract: The Confucian doctrine of tianxia (all under heaven) outlines a unitary worldview that cherishes global justice and transcends social, geographic, and political divides. For contemporary scholars, it has held myriad meanings, from the articulation of a cultural imaginary and political strategy to a moralistic commitment and a cosmological vision. The contributors to Chinese Visions of World Order examine the evolution of tianxia's meaning and practice in the Han dynasty and its mutations in modern times. They attend to its varied interpretations, its relation to realpolitik, and its revival in twenty-first-century China. They also investigate tianxia's birth in antiquity and its role in empire building, invoke its cultural universalism as a new global imagination for the contemporary world, analyze its resonance and affinity with cosmopolitanism in East-West cultural relations, discover its persistence in China's socialist internationalism and third world agenda, and critique its deployment as an official state ideology.     Abstract: In Städten ist die (post-)migrantische Gesellschaft verortet. Obwohl Menschen mit (familiären) Migrationsgeschichten große Teile der Stadtbevölkerung stellen - bei Kindern längst in der Mehrheit -, birgt diese Vielfalt keine gleichen Rechte: Gesellschaft und Ökonomie sind von rassistischen Ordnungen geprägt und der Staat ignoriert dies oder trägt durch entsprechende Maßnahmen dazu bei.Mathias Rodatz zeigt am Beispiel der Stadt Frankfurt am Main, wie aktuelle städtische Vielfaltspolitiken eine andere, gleichberechtigte Stadt versprechen - und unter neoliberalen Umständen doch ins Leere laufen. Er theoretisiert sie als Politiken transnationaler Stadtbürgerschaft, deren Potenzial zu einer tatsächlichen Herausforderung des Staatsrassismus in der Stadt es noch zu realisieren gilt

    Abstract: 2013 wurde festlich die 50-Jahr-Feier koreanischer Migrationsgeschichte in Deutschland begangen. Über Religion und Migration wird viel diskutiert, dennoch ist nach wie vor wenig über die Bedingungen der Arbeitsmigration, beispielsweise die Kultur, Tradition und Selbstorganisation der Koreaner_innen in Deutschland, bekannt. Anhand koreanischer Migrantenkirchen in Nordrhein-Westfalen untersucht Sabrina Weiß die Gründung, Etablierung und den Wandel der christlichen Gemeinschaften im Kulturkontakt aus religionswissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Die Studie leistet so einen Beitrag zu Debatten über kirchliche Institutionalisierungsprozesse und religiöse Vielfalt jenseits der etablierten Großkirchen

Mittels der Analyse von Konzerten, Liedtexten, CD-Covern und Interviews mit bekannten Musikern im Bereich des Pagan Metal diskutiert Serina Heinen das Verhältnis von Religion und Populärkultur.Dabei tritt ein wichtiger Aspekt von moderner Religion zutage, der in religionssoziologischen Debatten kaum Beachtung findet: Religion im populärkulturellen Kontext ist vieldeutig. Pagan Metal ist voller explizit religionsbezogener Symbolik, doch verstehen die Musiker ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Religion nicht zwingend als religiöses Bekenntnis
    Abstract: Religion is found not only in churches and mosques, but also in profane environments - even at heavy metal concerts. Through an analysis of concerts, lyrics, CD covers and interviews with famous musicians in the 'pagan metal' scene, Serina Heinen discusses the relationship between religion and popular culture. In the process, an important aspect of religion is brought to light that in the socio-religious debate on secularization and the return of religion is given hardly any attention: in a contemporary society strongly shaped by popular culture, religion does not necessarily have a religious connotation. The religious references in pagan metal are primarily used for stylistic purposes - and not as religious proclamations

    Abstract: Der Orient ist als kulturelle Antithese eine Projektionsfläche europäischer Denkweisen und Phantasmen. Besonders in der französischen und frankophonen Literatur und Kunst ist er seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein allgegenwärtiges Thema. Die Beiträge des Bandes machen diese Konstruktionen des Orients in ihrer Komplementarität und in der medialen Differenz von bildender Kunst und Literatur sichtbar. Als ein interdisziplinärer Beitrag zur Orientalismus-Debatte werden die literarischen und künstlerischen Werke des sogenannten Orientalismus nicht länger einer versatzstückhaften Ideologiekritik durch Wissenschaft unterzogen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, dass einem Teil dieser Werke die Dekonstruktion des Orients als ästhetische Praxis bereits selbst eingeschrieben ist
    Abstract: As a cultural antithesis, the Orient is a site of projections for European mind-sets and fantasies. Since the 19th century, it has been an omnipresent subject, particularly in francophone literature and art. The contributions to this volume uncover these constructions of the Orient in their complementarity and their different manifestations in visual art and literature. As an interdisciplinary contribution to the orientalism debate, the literary and artistic works of so-called orientalism are no longer subjected to a stock critique of ideology through scholarship. Rather, we are shown that many of these books are already engaged in the act of deconstructing the Orient as an aesthetic practice

    Abstract: Pinar Tuzcu explores rapper Lady Bitch Ray's performance and particularly her use of the term Kanackin. She combines issues of popfeminism and postmigration through speculative methodology and invites us to forget prescriptive definitions by proposing paradoxicality as a source to diversify our concepts of feminism. By means of Situational Analysis, her study works through the contradictory forms of positioning that occurred in group discussions with Turkish-German university students about Lady Bitch Ray's music videos. In this book, Tuzcu argues that these contradictory forms of positioning bear traces of emergent discourses that reach beyond Western-centric descriptions of feminism in Germany

    Abstract: Jeanne Féaux de la Croix maps three iconic places as part of Central Asians' 'moral geographies' and examines their role in navigating socialist, neo-liberal and neo-Islamic life models.Dams provide most of Kyrgyzstan's electricity, but are also at the heart of regional water disputes that threaten an already shrinking Aral Sea. Mountain pastures cover much of Central Asia's heartland and offer a livelihood and refuge, even to urban citizens. Pilgrimage sites have recovered from official Soviet oblivion and act as cherished scenes of decision-making. Examining how iconic places, work and well-being can mesh together, this book moves debates about post-Soviet memory, space and property onto fresh terrain

    Abstract: Caste hierarchy has frequently been singled out as the overriding principle of Indian society. This book examines its significance among the highly-educated middle class in the Tamil town of Madurai. As part of their distinctive status as 'educated persons', young graduates form egalitarian constellations by ostensibly subverting the boundaries inscribed by caste hierarchy. Stephanie Stocker explores how these friendships are maintained in wider social contexts, finding that the actors engage in supportive networks throughout career and marriage events. Instead of assuming these relationships to be of an entirely different, 'alternative category', however, Stocker's study proposes a dynamic character of friendship which in fact remains in conjunction with Indian values of hierarchy

In dieser ethnographischen Analyse »begleitet« Julia Koch Angehörige der Kaste auf ihrem Weg, der in zwei Dörfern der Abreise in Gujarat/Westindien beginnt und in zwei Ankunftsräumen in Südafrika endet.Von der hierbei eingenommenen Forschungsposition aus werden diese Orte symmetrisch betrachtet und die gegenwärtige Migration in die ehemaligen südafrikanischen »Homelands« wird in einen historischen Kontext eingebettet.     Abstract: Working with nature - and not against it - is a global trend in coastal management. This ethnography of coastal protection follows the increasingly popular approach of "soft" protection to the Aotearoa New Zealand coast. Friederike Gesing analyses a political controversy over hard and soft protection measures, and introduces a growing community of practice involved in projects of working with nature. Dune restoration volunteers, coastal management experts, surfer-scientists, and Maori conservationists are engaged in projects ranging from do-it-yourself erosion control, to the reconstruction of native nature, and soft engineering "in concert with natural processes". With soft protection, Gesing argues, we can witness a new sociotechnical imaginary in the making

    Abstract: Topographies of nighttime entertainment have been for years developing into an indicator for quality of life - and as such, into a location factor to be taken seriously by cities and regions in intercity competition for highly qualified professionals, for whom a vibrant nightlife is important. At the same time, there is growing critique around the increasing commodification of urban spaces and times, which bring with them multiple social and economic processes of displacement and gentrification. Beyond this, nocturnal economies are associated with criminality, excessive alcohol and drug consumption, prostitution, noise and waste issues, as well as »light pollution«.     Abstract: 25 years after the fall of the wall and ten years after the eastward expansion of the EU - these politically significant events have also fundamentally altered historical research on Eastern Europe. The extent to which the contributors to this volume have benefitted as a result of the establishment of historical cultural studies, the opening of previously sealed archives and more importantly, from a hitherto unknown freedom of movement, is shown in their urban histories: based on cultural-historical interrogations into »museification« and monumentalization, on representativeness or multiculturalism in the Eastern European urban sphere, they offer insights into the history of metropolises like Prague, Baku, Moscow or St Petersburg, and regional centers like Lviv or Irkutsk

Hierbei helfen Praktiken des aufmerksamen Gehens, die aus der Flanerie entwickelt wurden.Zentrales Moment der Studie ist die Frage nach der Übersetzung und Übergabe von Erinnerungen an Orten, an denen Erinnerungen aufscheinen bzw. sich festmachen lassen. Diese neue Form der Erinnerungstätigkeit bezieht individuelles und kollektives Erinnern in den bislang geführten Gedächtnis- und Erinnerungsdiskurs ein und arbeitet die Potentiale beider Modi heraus, ohne sie zu bedingen
    Abstract: Building on a well founded criticism of gaps in the usual memory and remembrance concepts, and with the help of contemporary projects of remembrance work, Karsten Michael Drohsel develops a social figure for the methodization of a new remembrance that can be individually practiced and experienced. This is assisted by practices of attentive walking, which were developed from flânerie. The central momentum of the study lies in the question for the translation and handing over of memories in places where memories arise or to which they can be tied. This new form of remembrance activity includes individual and collective remembering into the existing discourse of memory and remembrance and elaborates the potentials of both modes without determining them

After the »white dove on Africa's shoulder« disappeared from Europe's consciousness for 30 years, it is now experiencing a new economic and cultural boom. At the center of this book are the inhabitants of the city: how do they deal with the changes, and how do they recall the city's cosmopolitan past? What is the significance of the spirit-beings, what of the trance fraternities? What is the reputation of the city as a site of sin and sexual fulfillment all about? Juxtaposing canonical fiction with popular, and low-budget independent films with Classical Hollywood, Leyda brings the analytic tools of American cultural and literary studies to bear on an eclectic array of primary texts as she builds a case for the significance of mobility in the study of the United States

    Abstract: In Geontologies Elizabeth A. Povinelli continues her project of mapping the current conditions of late liberalism by offering a bold retheorization of power. Finding Foucauldian biopolitics unable to adequately reveal contemporary mechanisms of power and governance, Povinelli describes a mode of power she calls geontopower, which operates through the regulation of the distinction between Life and Nonlife and the figures of the Desert, the Animist, and the Virus. Geontologies examines this formation of power from the perspective of Indigenous Australian maneuvers against the settler state. And it probes how our contemporary critical languages—anthropogenic climate change, plasticity, new materialism, antinormativity—often unwittingly transform their struggles against geontopower into a deeper entwinement within it. A woman who became a river, a snakelike entity who spawns the fog, plesiosaurus fossils and vast networks of rock weirs: in asking how these different forms of existence refuse incorporation into the vocabularies of Western theory Povinelli provides a revelatory new way to understand a form of power long self-evident in certain regimes of settler late liberalism but now becoming visible much further beyond

    Abstract: The recent media, political and everyday treatment of forced migration has made overt racism "socially acceptable" again. In this way, the discussion of "refugees" and "migrants" following the events in Cologne on New Years' Eve has increasingly taken on the tone of the demonisation of the imagined Other. As this is linked to the "tightening of the asylum act" and a European refugee politics that is increasingly isolationist, this demonisation also preserves material and symbolic relations of privilege. Because the Others are demonic and rampant, as the most concise formation of the analysis goes, we are empowered to protect ourselves from them. Mark Nowakowski provides a detailed portrait of street music in Berlin and of its protagonists, and in doing so, provides the first systematic investigation of this urban performance culture in Germany. In addition to the motives of the artists, he analyzes the role of the public and urban space as the context in which street music occurs, but also socio-cultural dimensions and historical processes of change. Despite reforms and advertising campaigns, from the late '80s, Swiss transplant medicine began to lament an increasing mistrust in organ donation and falling donor numbers. Simon Hofmann throws light on the role of doctors, nurses, family members and donees, but also of the media, politicians and the pharmaceutical industry. In doing so, he draws out the relations between hospital practices, public debates, and fictitious narratives about organ smuggling. He tells a complex and contradictory story of modern biomedicine at the edge of life and death, which is shaped as much by economic calculations as by utopian hope and traumatic fears

    Abstract: In White Innocence Gloria Wekker explores a central paradox of Dutch culture: the passionate denial of racial discrimination and colonial violence coexisting alongside aggressive racism and xenophobia. Accessing a cultural archive built over 400 years of Dutch colonial rule, Wekker fundamentally challenges Dutch racial exceptionalism by undermining the dominant narrative of the Netherlands as a "gentle" and "ethical" nation. Wekker analyzes the Dutch media's portrayal of black women and men, the failure to grasp race in the Dutch academy, contemporary conservative politics (including gay politicians espousing anti-immigrant rhetoric), and the controversy surrounding the folkloric character Black Pete, showing how the denial of racism and the expression of innocence safeguards white privilege. Wekker uncovers the postcolonial legacy of race and its role in shaping the white Dutch self, presenting the contested, persistent legacy of racism in the country
