    Abstract: This book considers the question: to what extent does it make sense to qualify technical artefacts as moral entities? The authors' contributions trace recent proposals and topics including instrumental and non-instrumental values of artefacts, agency and artefactual agency, values in and around technologies, and the moral significance of technology. The editors' introduction explains that as 'agents' rather than simply passive instruments, technical artefacts may actively influence their users, changing the way they perceive the world, the way they act in the world and the way they interact with each other. This volume features the work of various experts from around the world, representing a variety of positions on the topic. Contributions explore the contested discourse on agency in humans and artefacts, defend the Value Neutrality Thesis by arguing that technological artefacts do not contain, have or exhibit values, or argue that moral agency involves both human and non-human elements.The book also investigates technological fields that are subject to negative moral valuations due to the harmful effects of some of their products. It includes an analysis of some difficulties arising in Artificial Intelligence and an exploration of values in Chemistry and in Engineering. The Moral Status of Technical Artefacts is an advanced exploration of the various dimensions of the relations between technology and morality.

    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Aunque a la altura de 2014 el fallido golpe de Estado de febrero de 1981 es para casi la mitad de los españoles un acontecimiento histórico quizás borroso en la memoria, el «23-F» no ha dejado de funcionar como icono cultural de la Transición y del nuevo Estado democrático. El relato del 23-F con sus héroes y villanos continúa hoy explicando y justificando lo mismo éxitos que fracasos, aciertos que errores. Siempre ahí, siempre listo para un nuevo reciclaje. Los capítulos que componen este libro tienen el objetivo común de abordar el análisis de la producción cultural en torno al 23-F, indagando en lo que tal producción puede enseñarnos sobre la España en la que se realiza y se consume. En este sentido, viene a llenar un hueco importante. A pesar de lo mucho que se ha escrito sobre el 23-F desde perspectivas periodísticas, históricas y políticas, faltaba un estudio abarcador del 23-F como icono y mito cultural. Este volumen suple esa falta con un compendio de ensayos que abordan a la vez el impacto del evento histórico en la cultura y los modos en que esta cultura digiere los hechos, creando relatos cotidianos que son fundamentales para entender la España de los últimos 30 años.

    Abstract: Au XIXe siècle, Paris gagne ses galons de capitale mondiale des plaisirs. Lorettes, grisettes et courtisanes, conquérantes et victorieuses, règnent alors sur la Ville Lumière. Et derrière elles, une myriade de congrégations, aussi nombreuses que les petits noms secrets et affectueux susurrés par les amants à l’oreille de leurs maîtresses, se réclamant des États de la prostitution. S’il existe une typologie des femmes publiques aussi riche, la responsabilité en revient au premier chef aux journalistes, chroniqueurs, échotiers, illustrateurs et caricaturistes, écrivains oubliés ou à jamais illustres qui ont dénommé les filles qu’ils croisaient sur les trottoirs de la capitale, le long des boulevards ou dans les faubourgs, au théâtre, au bal ou à l’Opéra, dans les cafés, sur les Champs-Élysées et au sein de quelques salons. Mais si les catins parisiennes de l’époque ont eu le bonheur d’entrer dans l’histoire, cela tient d’abord à leur fortune littéraire. Les frères Goncourt, Baudelaire, Eugène Sue, Théophile Gautier, les Dumas, père et fils, Tristan Corbière, Huysmans, Zola, Balzac, Flaubert, Maupassant, Barbey d’Aurevilly ont tous témoigné, à des degrés divers, de leur intérêt vis-à-vis de ces dames, les dégageant des vils clichés auxquels elles étaient réduites et contribuant à changer le regard que la société leur portait jusque-là. Ces grands noms, le lecteur les connaît. Leurs ouvrages, Nana, La Dame aux camélias, Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes, etc., il les a parfois lus à un âge et dans un cadre, scolaire et donc pudique, qui ne lui ont pas toujours permis de saisir qu’ils avaient tous pour sujet… les lorettes !

Die Beiträge in diesem Band, u.a. von Ottmar Ette, Françoise Vergès und Khal Torabully, prüfen die Anschlussfähigkeit von historischen und aktuellen Kreolisierungsprozessen für internationale und europäische Debatten.

Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Öffentlichkeit und politische Kultur, religiöse Pluralisierung, Netzwerkforschung und Kulturtransfer sowie Praktiken der Subjektivierung in historischer und transkultureller Perspektive. - Main description: Was »macht« ein Subjekt?     Abstract: Les Français n’ont été ni sourds ni muets quant à l’extermination des Juifs. Non, il ne leur a pas fallu trente ou quarante ans pour accepter de saisir le plus grand crime de l’histoire. Dès le lendemain de la guerre, les élites ont élaboré une véritable pensée du génocide où les catholiques et les protestants ont eu une part immense, dont on n’avait pas pris la mesure jusqu’ici. Les intellectuels de tout bord ont été pris à la gorge par la spécificité de ce phénomène. Bien sûr, la culpabilité a joué un rôle, mais contrairement à une idée reçue, elle a été assumée, proférée, et c’est elle qui a animé le mouvement de réception de l’événement et sa progressive extension à tout le corps social. Lorsque, en 1967, la guerre des Six-Jours éclate, elle rencontre une opinion publique déjà très bien instruite et sensibilisée au drame des Juifs par vingt années de romans, de films, de récits, de témoignages. Il y a eu en France un « syndrome de Vichy », mais pas de « syndrome de la Shoah ». Pourtant, quand, dans les années 1970 et 1980, le regard sur les années noires de Vichy a changé et qu’il est devenu moins bienveillant, un mythe global est né : celui d’une France malade de son passé et incapable de se regarder en face. En fait, la réalité est autre : si les Français ont occulté Vichy, ils n’ont pas occulté l’extermination des Juifs. Pour le prouver, François Azouvi livre ici la première étude systématique de tout ce qui a été écrit, publié ou produit en France sur la Shoah depuis 1945.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Dr. Leander Scholz ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Internationalen Kolleg für Kulturtechnikforschung und Medienphilosophie (IKKM) der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
    Abstract: Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.

    Abstract: Racial and ethnic categories have appeared in recent scientific work in novel ways and in relation to a variety of disciplines: medicine, forensics, population genetics and also developments in popular genealogy. Once again, biology is foregrounded in the discussion of human identity. Of particular importance is the preoccupation with origins and personal discovery and the increasing use of racial and ethnic categories in social policy. This new genetic knowledge, expressed in technology and practice, has the potential to disrupt how race and ethnicity are debated, managed and lived. The contributors include medical researchers, anthropologists, historians of science and sociologists of race relations; together, they explore the new and challenging landscape where biology becomes the stuff of identity

    Abstract: The Cultures of Italian Migration allows the adjective 'Italian' to qualify people's movements along diverse trajectories and temporal dimensions. Discussions on migrations to and from Italy meet in that discursive space where critical concepts like 'home,' 'identity,' 'subjectivity,' and 'otherness' eschew stereotyping. This volume demonstrates that interpretations of old migrations are necessary in order to talk about contemporary Italy. New migrations trace new non linear paths in the definition of a multicultural Italy whose roots are unmistakably present throughout the centuries. Some of these essays concentrate on topics that are historically long-term, such as emigration from Italy to the Americas and southern Pacific Ocean. Others focus on the more contemporary phenomena of immigration to Italy from other parts of the world, including Africa. This collection ultimately offers an invitation to seek out new and different modes of analyzing the migratory act.
