    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus.     Note: Die Forschung zur Gewalt in modernen westlichen Gesellschaften hat in den letzten Jahren zugenommen. Die Erklärungen dafür sind zahlreich: tatsächlicher Anstieg bei bestimmten Gewaltvarianten, neue Sensibilitäten, Rückkehr alter Gewaltformen, Verlagerung von Gewalt in andere gesellschaftliche Bereiche etc. Bisher fehlte jedoch ein systematischer Überblick über die tatsächlichen Befunde. Das "Internationale Handbuch der Gewaltforschung" füllt diese Lücke. Es stellt die langfristigen Entwicklungen umfassend dar, berücksichtigt aber auch ganz aktuelle Ereignisse. Insgesamt dominiert dabei der soziologische Schwerpunkt: Gewalt als soziales Phänomen. Entsprechend sind die Artikel gruppiert nach sozialstrukturellen Verhältnissen und Gewalt, Sozialisation und Lernen von Gewalt, Gewalterfahrungen und Gewalttätigkeiten etc. Ge-waltopfer werden ebenso thematisiert wie die Gewalt in gesellschaftlichen Institutionen, im öffentlichen Raum, durch politische Gruppen oder in bezie-hungsweise durch staatliche Institutionen. Thematisiert werden auch die jeweiligen Gewaltdiskurse, Rechtfertigungen und Verarbeitungen, mithin die ganze Prozessdynamik. Die 62 Artikel von Autorinnen und Autoren aus zehn Ländern liefern aber auch Analysen mit sozialpsychologischen, kulturwis-senschaftlichen, rechtswissenschaftlichen, politikwissenschaftlichen und historischen Hintergründen sowie soziobiologischer und psychologischer Herkunft. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein komplexes, mehrperspektivisches Bild eines schwierigen Forschungsfeldes zwischen Ordnung, Zerstörung und Macht

Taking into account the vast changes wrought in both anthropology and the law by globalization, Nader speaks to the increasing dominance of large business corporations and the prominence of neoliberal ideology and practice today. In her discussion of these trends, she considers the rise of the alternative dispute resolution movement, which since the 1960s has been part of a major overhaul of the U.S. judicial system. Nader links the increasing popularity of this movement with the erosion of the plaintiff's power and suggests that mediation as an approach to conflict resolution is structured to favor powerful--often corporate --interests

    Abstract: Netwar-like cyberwar-describes a new spectrum of conflict that is emerging in the wake of the information revolution. Netwar includes conflicts waged, on the one hand, by terrorists, criminals, gangs, and ethnic extremists; and by civil-society activists (such as cyber activists or WTO protestors) on the other. What distinguishes netwar is the networked organizational structure of its practitioners-with many groups actually being leaderless-and their quickness in coming together in swarming attacks. To confront this new type of conflict, it is crucial for governments, military, and law enforcement to begin networking themselves.

Their function was to transform delinquents into useful citizens. But how should the buildings be designed to achieve that aim? Which new technologies could be used? The birth of modern prisons was long-lasting, covering three generations. The author outlines this process and shows parallels to the developments in England and the United States.
    Abstract: Main description: Der fundamentale Transformationsprozess des Strafsystems zwischen 1750 und 1850 machte die Strafanstalt zum Zentrum des staatlichen Strafvollzugs. Mit ihrer Hilfe hofften die Zeitgenossen, den Delinquenten in einen nützlichen Staatsbürger umschaffen zu können. Doch welches Design mußte diese Institution haben? Mit welchen Techniken war die Besserung des Delinquenten zu erreichen? Und wie sollte diese neue Straftechnologie in das bestehende Anstaltssystem implementiert werden? Die Geburt des Gefängnisses war ein langwieriger Erfindungsprozeß, der sich über drei Generationen hinzog. Thomas Nutz zeichnet nach, wie sich im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert ein spezifischer Diskurs über die Reform der Haftanstalten formierte und ein internationales Fachwissen herausbildete. Eine Entwicklung, die schließlich Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Entstehung einer eigenständigen Disziplin der "Gefängniskunde" mündete. Am Beispiel Preußens demonstriert der Autor, wie eng die staatlichen Bürokratien bei der Durchführung der Reformen des Vollzugswesens mit den gefängniskundlichen Experten zusammenarbeiteten.

    Abstract: "International business transactions are heavily influenced by culture,practice and rule. The pursuit of business relationships within nation-states can be subject to differences in the generation of norms and the processing of disputes, but these conflicts are magnified many times over in cross-border transactions where nation-state control and support is weak or absent. This book seeks different explanations of the ways in which business people and their legal advisers try to minimise the effect of these magnified difficulties. At the outset the editors suggest four sources through which the international business community might be considered to have supplemented nation-state conflict prevention and dispute resolution institutions - an international legal order; the development of a private normative order based on common business practices (denominated the lex mercatoria); through the efforts and work product of internationalised law firms, and by means of extensive, thick personal relationships often referred to by their Chinese term guanxi. Since most explanations are dominated by North American and European legal scholarship and practice, a second concern of this book is to open up the discussion to competing explanatory frameworks. Specifically, it develops the notion that global legal convergence may not be the immediate, inevitable result of increased global economic interaction.     Abstract: Das Konzept einer redistributiven Sozialpolitik scheint schon seit längerem in Deutschland an seine Grenzen gestoßen zu sein: Die durchgehend mit einer erheblichen Umverteilungskomponente versehenen sozialen Sicherungssysteme haben einerseits zu unerträglichen Belastungen insbesondere der laufenden Arbeitseinkommen geführt, ohne jedoch andererseits den Wunsch nach sozialer Gerechtigkeit nachhaltig erfüllen zu können. Ironischerweise scheint es sogar so zu sein, daß die Unzufriedenheit mit dem Sozialstaat aus einer wie auch immer definierten "Gerechtigkeitsperspektive" mit dem Ausmaß der Umverteilung wächst. Dieses ernüchternde Ergebnis hat in der Vergangenheit immer wieder zu wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen und -politischen Diskussionen darüber geführt, ob die traditionelle Umverteilungspolitik mit laufenden Einkommen als Zielgröße und Aktionsparameter redistributiver Maßnahmen nicht schon vom Ansatz her verfehlt ist. --
    Abstract: In diese Diskussion reiht sich die Dissertation von Thomas Wilke ein. Der Autor geht von der in einem theoretischen Teil abgeleiteten Hypothese aus, daß nicht das Arbeitseinkommen als Ergebnis der individuellen Leistungsfähigkeit und Leistungswilligkeit Gegenstand der Umverteilung sein darf, sondern vielmehr die individuellen Einkommenserzielungschancen, die durch das beim einzelnen gebildete Humankapital und gegebenenfalls geerbte oder geschenkte Vermögen maßgeblich beeinflußt werden. Chancengleichheit und nicht Egalität von Arbeitseinkommen ist folglich das durch eine Redistributionspolitik zu verfolgende Ziel. Damit aber rücken intergenerative Transfers und ihre umverteilende Besteuerung als Alternative zur Einkommensumverteilung in den Blickpunkt. --
    Abstract: Thomas Wilke beschäftigt sich intensiv mit einer theoretischen Diskussion unterschiedlicher Motive bezüglich intergenerativer Transfers. Durch eine sich auf Daten des Sozio-ökonomischen Panels und des Europäischen Haushaltspanels stützende empirische Untersuchung wird daran anschließend der Frage nachgegangen, ob und inwieweit man mit einer Erbschaft- und Schenkungsteuer die vom Staat wahrzunehmende Umverteilungsfunktion effizienter und gerechter ausfüllen kann. Der Autor kommt zu dem Ergebnis, daß dies nur dann gelingt, wenn ausschließlich Erbschaften, nicht aber Schenkungen zwischen Generationen besteuert werden

    Abstract: There is widespread concern that the growth of the Internet is exacerbating inequalities between the information rich and poor. Digital Divide examines access and use of the Internet in 179 nations world-wide. A global divide is evident between industrialized and developing societies. A social divide is apparent between rich and poor within each nation. Within the online community, evidence for a democratic divide is emerging between those who do and do not use Internet resources to engage and participate in public life. Part I outlines the theoretical debate between cyber-optimists who see the Internet as the great leveler. Part II examines the virtual political system and the way that representative institutions have responded to new opportunities on the Internet. Part III analyzes how the public has responded to these opportunities in Europe and the United States and develops the civic engagement model to explain patterns of participation via the Internet.

    Abstract: In this book, Thomas Buoye examines the impact of large-scale economic change on social conflict in eighteenth-century China. He draws upon a large body of actual, documented homicide cases originating in property disputes to recreate the social tensions of rural China during the Qianlong reign (1736–1795). The development of property rights, a process that had begun in the Ming dynasty, was accompanied by other changes that fostered disruption and conflict, including an explosion in the population growth and the increasing strain on land and resources, and increasing commercialization in agriculture. Buoye challenges the 'markets' and 'moral economy' theories of economic behaviour. Applying the theories of Douglass North for the first time to this subject, he uses an institutional framework to explain seemingly irrational economic choices. Buoye examines demographic and technological factors, ideology, and political and economic institutions in rural China to understand the link between economic and social change.

    Abstract: In order to distinguish between those who may and may not enter or leave, states everywhere have developed extensive systems of identification, central to which is the passport. This innovative book argues that documents such as passports, internal passports and related mechanisms have been crucial in making distinctions between citizens and non-citizens.     Abstract: China's 1911-12 Revolution, which overthrew a two-thousand-year succession of dynasties, is thought of primarily as a change in governmental style, from imperial to republican, traditional to modern. But given that the dynasty that was overthrown - the Qing - was that of a minority ethnic group that had ruled China's Han majority for nearly three centuries, and that the revolutionaries were overwhelmingly Han, to what extent was the revolution not only anti-monarchical, but also anti-Manchu?Edward Rhoads explores this provocative and complicated question in Manchus and Han, analysing the evolution of the Manchus from a hereditary military caste (the "banner people") to a distinct ethnic group and then detailing the interplay and dialogue between the Manchu court and Han reformers that culminated in the dramatic changes of the early twentieth century.     Abstract: In this work the authors present a general theory of bureaucracy and use it to explain behaviour in large organizations and to explain what determines efficiency in both governments and business corporations. The theory uses the methods of standard neoclassical economic theory. It relies on two central principles: that members of an organization trade with one another and that they compete with one another. Authority, which is the basis for conventional theories of bureaucracy, is given a role, despite reliance on the idea of trade between bureaucracies. It is argued, however, that bureaucracies cannot operate efficiently on the basis of authority alone. Exchange between bureaucrats is hampered because promises are not enforceable. So trust and loyalty between members of bureaucratic networks play an important part. The authors find that vertical networks promote efficiency while horizontal ones impede it.
