    Abstract: This study makes an original contribution to scholarship by tracking and evaluating the significance of the various individuals and (particularly) institutions responsible for the traffic of ideas both between Spain and the outside world, and also within Madrid and the interior. This has not been attempted before, and it is a necessary supplement to the usual focus on individual authors and texts, allowing us to appreciate the importance of setting the latter in the context of the circuits of knowledge functioning in Spain in their time. It looks in breadth and in detail at the nature of Spain's cultural and intellectual exchanges with Europe in the early decades of the twentieth century. Three features make it original in its approach. It focuses on a broad range of institutions, including publishing houses and journals, as 'centres of exchange', and looks at how they promoted and facilitated Spain's contact with Europe. The second feature is that it foregrounds the idea of 'cultural imaginaries' as the driving force behind Spain's exchanges with Europe. Thirdly, in terms of territory, it departs from a Franco/German-centred concept of Europe, paying particular attention to a Europe of the margins, in the form of England and Russia, as two countries that held particular attractions for the Spanish mind. While being centred on Madrid for its case-studies, it also pays specific attention to issues of internal dissemination. ALISON SINCLAIR is Professor of Spanish at the University of Cambridge.

    Abstract: Like the original Harvest of Violence, published in 1988, this volume reveals how the contemporary Mayas contend with crime, political violence, internal community power struggles, and the broader impact of transnational economic and political policies in Guatemala. However, this work, informed by long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Mayan communities and commitment to conducting research in Mayan languages, places current anthropological analyses in relation to Mayan political activism and key Mayan intellectuals' research and criticism. Illustrating specifically how Mayas in this post-war period conceive of their social and political place in Guatemala, Mayas working in factories, fields, and markets, and participating in local, community-level politics provide critiques of the government, the Maya movement, and the general state of insecurity and social and political violence that they continue to face on a daily basis.     Abstract: Jean Baudrillard was perhaps the most controversial of all social and cultural theorists. He has been variously vilified as a ‘postmodernist’, an ‘overrated French theorist’ and one of the ‘intellectual imposters’. In his seventies he survived global fame and a name check in The Matrix; he also contracted cancer. His comments on 9/11, Abu Ghraib and Europe’s suburban riots have been eagerly sought and digested. However, his translated publications since his first book in 1968 have left a trail of confusion and misinterpretation. Jean Baudrillard is a notorious figure but few have read many examples of his entire oeuvre. There is now though a chance to read Baudrillard’s texts in an overall historical, social and political context and for a cool re-assessment to be made of his life and work, after his death. This book is a central part of that project. It concentrates on what Baudrillard has written over five decades and the order in which he wrote it. The Reader comprises extracts of Baudrillard’s writings from the sixties to the noughties, with an editorial introduction and a concluding reading guide

    Abstract: In this book Denis M. Provencher examines the tensions between Anglo-American and French articulations of homosexuality and sexual citizenship in the context of contemporary French popular culture and first-person narratives. In the light of recent political events and the perceived hegemonic role of US forces throughout the world, an examination of the French resistance to globalization and 'Americanization', is timely in this context. He argues that contemporary French gay and lesbian cultures rely on long-standing French narratives that resist US models of gay experience. He maintains that French gay experiences are mitigated through (gay) French language that draws on several canonical voices - including Jean Genet and Jean-Paul Sartre - and various universalistic discourses. Drawing on material from a diverse array of media, Queer French draws out the importance of a French gay linguistic and semiotic tradition that emerges in contemporary textual practices and discourses as they relate to sexual citizenship in 20th- and 21st-century France. It will appeal to an interdisciplinary readership in gender and sexuality studies, cultural studies, linguistics, media and communication studies and French studies.

    Abstract: Die islamische Epoche auf der Iberischen Halbinsel bringt viele Neuerungen, die meist mit ihrer arabischen Bezeichnung übernommen werden. Im ersten Teil werden die hispanoislamische und die christliche Stadt sowie die Einflüsse untersucht, die diese vom Islam aufgenommen hat. Der zweite Teil analysiert die iberoromanischen Arabismen dieses Bereichs und die hispanoarabischen Etyma. Die sprachlichen werden mit den kulturhistorischen Daten in Beziehung gesetzt. Neben linguistischen können so wesentliche außersprachliche Faktoren als verantwortlich für den sprachlichen Wandel identifiziert werden.
    Abstract: The Islamic era on the Iberian peninsula brought many innovations with it, most of them adopted together with their Arab designations. Part One examines the Hispano-Islamic and Christian urban traditions, together with the Islamic influences incorporated into the latter. Part Two analyzes both the Ibero-Romance Arabisms encountered in this context and the Hispano-Arabic etyma. The relations between the linguistic data and the culture-historical data are indicated. Thus essential extra-linguistic factors operative in language change can be identified alongside the linguistic factors.

    Abstract: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina

    Abstract: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

C'est au moins ce que souhaite Paul Sebag dans la Préface de la dernière édition des Mille et Un Jours (Bourgois, 1980). Or, cet espoir n'est pas sans soulever quelques questions. Pourquoi, aujourd'hui, Les Mille et Un Jours sont-ils toujours des contes plus ou moins inconnus ? Est-ce à tort ou à raison ? S'agit-il d'une traduction ou d'un texte français ? Qui en est l'auteur ? Est-ce un obscur écrivain de l'Orient ou le professeur François Pétis de La Croix, collègue de l'auteur des Mille et Une Nuits ?     Abstract: Main description: Der Tagungsband zum Stuttgarter Kolloquium »Deutsch-französische Wahrnehmungsmuster und das Konzept nationaler Identität im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert« revidiert, von einem konstruktivistischen Verständnis von Nation ausgehend, die komparatistische Frage nach dem "Bild", das die Literatur von dem Fremden vermittelt. Aus sozial-, literatur- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersuchen die Beiträge am Beispiel von deutschen und französischen Texten zwischen Aufklärung und Vormärz das Verhältnis von Nationalstereotypen, Wahrnehmung bzw. Darstellung des Fremden und Identitätsbildung.
    Abstract: Main description: Proceeding from a constructivist understanding of the term 'nation', this volume containing the papers delivered at the Stuttgart colloquium on »German-French Perception Patterns and the Concept of National Identity in the 18th and 19th Centuries« re-views the question of the 'image' of otherness and the foreign conveyed by literature. From a sociological, literary and historical perspective the articles examine German and French texts from the period between the Enlightenment and the Vormärz to elucidate the relations between national stereotypes, awareness and representation of otherness, and identity formation.
