Den gemeinsamen fränkischen Wurzeln Mitteleuropas tragen die Aufsätze zum kulturellen Gedächtnis im Mittelalter Rechnung; im Blick der Forschung stehen aber auch konkrete Aspekte der aus dem Karolingerreich entstandenen Einzelnationen.     Abstract: Focusing on émigrés from Baden, Württemberg and Hungary in four host societies (Switzerland, the Ottoman Empire, England and the United States), Heléna Tóth considers exile in the aftermath of the revolutions of 1848–9 as a European phenomenon with global dimensions. While exile is often presented as an individual challenge, Tóth studies its collective aspects in the realms of the family and of professional and social networks. Exploring the interconnectedness of these areas, she argues that although we often like to sharply distinguish between labor migration and exile, these categories were anything but stable after the revolutions of 1848–9; migration belonged to the personal narrative of the revolution for a broad section of the population. Moreover, discussions about exile and amnesty played a central role in formulating the legacy of the revolutions not only for the émigrés but for their social environment and, ultimately, the governments of the restoration

    Abstract: How did medieval Europeans use and change their environments, think about the natural world, and try to handle the natural forces affecting their lives? This groundbreaking environmental history examines medieval relationships with the natural world from the perspective of social ecology, viewing human society as a hybrid of the cultural and the natural. Richard Hoffmann's interdisciplinary approach sheds important light on such central topics in medieval history as the decline of Rome, religious doctrine, urbanization and technology, as well as key environmental themes, among them energy use, sustainability, disease and climate change. Revealing the role of natural forces in events previously seen as purely human, the book explores issues including the treatment of animals, the 'tragedy of the commons', agricultural clearances and agrarian economies.     Abstract: This book brings together the contributions of twelve scholars engaged in language activism, in research and in promoting peace. The writers are keenly attuned to the potentially genocidal consequences of language differences. In the articles they have written, they make compelling cases for indigenous non-hegemonic languages to be used and promoted, not only as a means of communication but to preserve the multilingual communities inhabiting the world. The book is a product of a collegial effort resulting from a symposium on Language Policy and the Promotion of Peace or the Prevention of Conflict, which was held at the University of Osnabrück, Germany, in 2011. While many different 'angles of vision', positions, approaches and emphases are argued in the contributors' commentaries and in their case studies, the twelve scholars and activists are united in their call for a multilingual global habitus.
    Abstract: Neville Edward Alexander, the principal editor of this compilation, spent about 30 years studying and making policy proposals about the language question in South Africa. In that country, eleven languages are officially recognised by the post-apartheid government, and yet only two, English and Afrikaans, enjoy high-status functions in official communications. Alexander persistently called for mother-tongue instruction for children in their formative years of schooling. Sadly, this radical scholar and acknowledged sociologist of language died of lung cancer while he was working on this volume in 2012. Arnulf von Scheliha, the co-editor of this compilation, is professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Osnabrück in Germany. His main research topics are political ethics, interreligious hermeneutics, history of theology, and transformation of religion in pluralistic societies.

    Abstract: A distinct European perspective on Asia emerged in the late Middle Ages. Early reports of a homogeneous "India" of marvels and monsters gave way to accounts written by medieval travelers that indulged readers' curiosity about far-flung landscapes and cultures without exhibiting the attitudes evident in the later writings of aspiring imperialists. Mining the accounts of more than twenty Europeans who made---or claimed to have made---journeys to Mongolia, China, India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia between the mid-thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Kim Phillips reconstructs a medieval European vision of Asia that was by turns critical, neutral, and admiring. In offering a cultural history of the encounter between medieval Latin Christians and the distant East, Before Orientalism reveals how Europeans' prevailing preoccupations with food and eating habits, gender roles, sexualities, civility, and the foreign body helped shape their perceptions of Asian peoples and societies. Phillips gives particular attention to the texts' known or likely audiences, the cultural settings within which they found a foothold, and the broader impact of their descriptions, while also considering the motivations of their writers. She reveals in rich detail responses from European travelers that ranged from pragmatism to wonder. Fear of military might, admiration for high standards of civic life and court culture, and even delight in foreign magnificence rarely assumed the kind of secular Eurocentric superiority that would later characterize Orientalism. Placing medieval writing on the East in the context of an emergent "Europe" whose explorers sought to learn more than to rule, Before Orientalism complicates our understanding of medieval attitudes toward the foreign.

    Abstract: World War I marks a well-known turning point in anthropology, and this volume is the first to examine the variety of forms it took in Europe. Distinct national traditions emerged and institutes were founded, partly due to collaborations with the military. Researchers in the cultural sciences used war zones to gain access to »informants«: prisoner-of-war and refugee camps, occupied territories, even the front lines. Anthropologists tailored their inquiries to aid the war effort, contributed to interpretations of the war as a »struggle« between »races«, and assessed the »warlike« nature of the Balkan region, whose crises were key to the outbreak of the Great War.

    Abstract: Der deutsch- und englischsprachige Band enthält neun Essays von bekannten KanadistInnen aus Österreich, Deutschland und Kanada, die sich mit Immigration nach und Integration in Nordamerika beschäftigen: Wie wird dieses aktuelle Problem in Kanada bewältigt? Könnte das offiziell multikulturelle Kanada für Länder wie Österreich und Frankreich ein Muster sein? Neben der gelungenen Integration, die sich in Romanen von selbst nach Kanada eingewanderten ErzählerInnen spiegelt, belegen ethnische Autobiographien die früher auch in Kanada häufigen Probleme. Das Spannungsverhältnis beim transkulturellen Übergang erscheint als mögliche Inspirationsquelle, wobei Schriftsteller aus der Karibik ergiebige Untersuchungsobjekte sind. Die Einwanderung aus Österreich kommt ebenso zur Sprache wie die spezifische Auseinandersetzung mit der Immigration in Quebec, wo das Konzept des Interkulturalismus dominiert, sowie das Schicksal von Millionen illegaler Einwanderer in den USA. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.

Wenig Beachtung hingegen fand bisher die Pendelmigration deutsch-polnischer Doppelstaatler aus Oberschlesien - einer Region, die aus der ehemaligen Peripherie Deutschlands wie Polens inzwischen mitten in ein vereintes Europa gerückt ist.Dabei macht die wechselvolle Geschichte dieser historischen Grenzregion sie geradezu zu einem Paradebeispiel für das Phänomen »Transnationalismus«. Die hier analysierten Lebensgeschichten ihrer Einwohner_innen werfen Schlaglichter auf europäische Diskurse über soziale und politische Partizipation sowie auf individuelle und kollektive Identitätsbildung.

    Abstract: Dieses Jahrbuch des Frankreichzentrums verbindet zwei Schwerpunkte: Es befasst sich zum einen mit dem Zusammenhang von Europa und Literatur, zum anderen mit dem Verhältnis von Interkulturalität und Krieg.Der erste Teil fragt, wie der Text Europa den Ort Europa konstituiert - und umgekehrt. Die Beiträge thematisieren u.a. Deleuzes Konzept des Nomadischen, die Geokritik sowie Werke von Paul Valéry und Romain Gary.Der zweite Teil widmet sich aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive einer provokativen Frage: Sind Kriege Motor interkultureller Kommunikation und Verständigung? Am Beispiel der Weltkriege und der Entkolonialisierungskonflikte des 20. Jahrhunderts sowie anhand von filmischen und literarischen Fallstudien aus dem frankophonen Kulturraum werden Phänomene wie Fremdwahrnehmung und interkulturelle Kommunikation analysiert.

Hier setzt diese Publikation an, für die Expertinnen und Experten aus europäischen Ländern gewonnen werden konnten. Im ersten Teil des Bandes werden zentrale Themen wie die Sprache der Roma, die Romani Čhib, der Roma Education Fund und Roma betreffende Entwicklungen in Südosteuropa im Überblick behandelt. Der zweite Teil umfasst Beiträge zu den Lebens- und Bildungssituationen von Roma in ausgewählten Staaten. Berichtet und erörtert werden historische Hintergrundinformationen, empirisch gewonnene Daten und aktuelle Entwicklungen sowie Ansätze zu einer Bearbeitung der Bildungsbenachteiligung von Roma. Divided amongst themselves and uncertain about the political and artistic directions of life in the diaspora, these writers carried on two simultaneous literary dialogues: with the emerging Soviet Union and with the dizzying world of European modernism that surrounded them in the West. Chapters address generational differences, literary polemics and experimentation, the heritage of pre-October Russian modernism, and the fate of individual writers and critics, offering a sweeping view of how exiles created a literary diaspora. The discussion moves beyond Russian studies to contribute to today's broad, cross-cultural study of the creative side of political and cultural displacement

    Abstract: Current ecological and environmental problems put the concept of nature more and more into the center of debates. This book presents analyses and case studies that explore the function and meaning of nature within the process of modernization at the epochal threshold of 1900 anew. In a trans-national, Northern European comparison, the contributions address the medial representations of nature (in literature, philosophy, film, photography) as well as the colonization of space (in tourism, travels, sports, environmental and cultural heritage protection).     Abstract: This volume is devoted to selected aspects of the culture and language of the two largest Jewish Diaspora groups, Sephardim and Ashkenazim. The authors analyze the latest European research tendencies related to both Jewish factions.     Abstract: Religion is back again in Europe after never having been gone. It is manifest in the revival of religious institutions and traditions in former communist countries, in political controversies about the relationship between the church(es) and the state and about the freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize religion, and in public unease about religious minorities. This book is about religion and civil society in Europe. It moves from general theoretical and normative approaches of this relationship, via the examination of national patterns of religion-state relations, to in-depth analyses of the impact of religion and secularization on the values, pro-social attitudes and civic engagement of individuals. It covers Europe from the Lutheran North to the Catholic South, and from the secularized West to the Orthodox East and Islamic South-East with comparative analyses and country studies, concluding with an overall Europe-USA comparison.

    Abstract: The triumphant arrival of the Ottoman Turks before the gates of Vienna generated a spate of widely variegated writings almost too manifold to be surveyed from a present-day viewpoint and encompassing all the material resources of communication available at the time. As such this body of writing may be legitimately regarded as a transnational paradigm of early modern public communication. The studies in this volume present the results of a colloquium organized by the Wolfenbüttel Research Group on the Renaissance and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. They are interdisciplinary in nature and international in their perspective and examine both the actors involved in the confrontation between Turks and Europeans and the authors, styles, problems, lines of tradition and reception modalities identifiable in the literature it generated

Part of this migration is constituted by refugees and asylum seekers, while the other part, grossly put, is constituted by labour migrants who seek to improve their lives and future prospects through their work power. There are of course not only push factors causing migrants to leave, but also pull factors as when the middle classes enjoy an increase in their living standards which cause them to employ domestic help in their homes. Different regulations apply for migrants within different national contexts and also within the same nation and have different impact on the migrants manoeuvring possibilities and rights, and may leave them vulnerable to exploitation. As migration is gendered in that different motivations often exist for men and women, so are the possibilities that are offered, exemplified by the fact that very many women migrate as domestic workers, as nannies, or as au pairs, yet basically perform the same duties but are defined differently according to the rules that apply. As the work the female migrants perform is very often and traditionally regarded as womens work it does not qualify as real work and, consequently, it is not necessary to pay them a proper salary. This book examines the vulnerability caused by migration or rather the fact that the vulnerability of women may cause a forced migration and the ways in which this is dealt with by national authorities in affluent European states , Includes bibliographical references

    Abstract: "The region between the river Senegal and Sierra Leone saw the first trans-Atlantic slave trade in the sixteenth century. Drawing on many new sources, Toby Green challenges current quantitative approaches to the history of the slave trade. New data on slave origins can show how and why Western African societies responded to Atlantic pressures. Green argues that answering these questions requires a cultural framework and uses the idea of creolization - the formation of mixed cultural communities in the era of plantation societies - to argue that preceding social patterns in both Africa and Europe were crucial. Major impacts of the sixteenth-century slave trade included political fragmentation, changes in identity, and the reorganization of ritual and social patterns.     Abstract: Why are hopes fading for a single European identity? Economic integration has advanced faster and further than predicted, yet the European sense of 'who we are' is fragmenting. Exploiting decades of permissive consensus, Europe's elites designed and completed the single market, the euro, the Schengen passport-free zone, and, most recently, crafted an extraordinarily successful policy of enlargement. At the same time, these attempts to de-politicize politics, to create Europe by stealth, have produced a political backlash. This ambitious survey of identity in Europe captures the experiences of the winners and losers, optimists and pessimists, movers and stayers in a Europe where spatial and cultural borders are becoming ever more permeable. A full understanding of Europe's ambivalence, refracted through its multiple identities, lies at the intersection of competing European political projects and social processes
