    Abstract: Differences in attitudes to death and dying in two distinct social classes, the ecclesiastics and the nobility. The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina

    Abstract: This volume presents both an analysis of how identities are built, represented and negotiated in narrative, as well as a theoretical reflection on the links between narrative discourse and identity construction. The data for the book are Mexican immigrants' personal experience narratives and chronicles of their border crossings into the United States. Embracing a view of identity as a construct firmly grounded in discourse and interaction, the author examines and illustrates the multiple threads that connect the local expression and negotiation of identity to the wider social contexts that frame the experience of migration, from material conditions of life in the United States to mainstream discourses about race and color. The analysis reveals how identities emerge in discourse through the interplay of different levels of expression, from implicit adherence to narrative styles and ways of telling, to explicit negotiation of membership categories.

C'est au moins ce que souhaite Paul Sebag dans la Préface de la dernière édition des Mille et Un Jours (Bourgois, 1980). Or, cet espoir n'est pas sans soulever quelques questions. Pourquoi, aujourd'hui, Les Mille et Un Jours sont-ils toujours des contes plus ou moins inconnus ? Est-ce à tort ou à raison ? S'agit-il d'une traduction ou d'un texte français ? Qui en est l'auteur ? Est-ce un obscur écrivain de l'Orient ou le professeur François Pétis de La Croix, collègue de l'auteur des Mille et Une Nuits ? Ou est-ce même un tiers, à savoir Alain René Lesage comme l'affirment plusieurs critiques ?     Abstract: Main description: Der Tagungsband zum Stuttgarter Kolloquium »Deutsch-französische Wahrnehmungsmuster und das Konzept nationaler Identität im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert« revidiert, von einem konstruktivistischen Verständnis von Nation ausgehend, die komparatistische Frage nach dem "Bild", das die Literatur von dem Fremden vermittelt. Aus sozial-, literatur- und geschichtswissenschaftlicher Perspektive untersuchen die Beiträge am Beispiel von deutschen und französischen Texten zwischen Aufklärung und Vormärz das Verhältnis von Nationalstereotypen, Wahrnehmung bzw. Darstellung des Fremden und Identitätsbildung.
    Abstract: Main description: Proceeding from a constructivist understanding of the term 'nation', this volume containing the papers delivered at the Stuttgart colloquium on »German-French Perception Patterns and the Concept of National Identity in the 18th and 19th Centuries« re-views the question of the 'image' of otherness and the foreign conveyed by literature. From a sociological, literary and historical perspective the articles examine German and French texts from the period between the Enlightenment and the Vormärz to elucidate the relations between national stereotypes, awareness and representation of otherness, and identity formation.
