    Note: Das Thema "Kultur" hat seit dem sogenannten "cultural turn" in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften eine enorme Konjunktur erfahren. Die damit verbundene These einer paradigmatischen Wende auch der Soziologie ist wenig überzeugend. Am Beispiel der Entwicklung von Vornamen über 100 Jahre wird gezeigt, dass man sehr gut mit dem klassischen Instrumentarium der Soziologie und dessen wissenschaftstheoretischer Begründung arbeiten kann, um Erkenntnisse über die Kulturentwicklung einer Gesellschaft zu produzieren. Am Beispiel der Vergabe von Vornamen lassen sich kulturelle Modernisierungsprozesse empirisch beschreiben und strukturell erklären: Die traditionellen Ligaturen Familie, Religion und Bindung an die Nation verlieren im Zeitverlauf in der Strukturierung der Vergabe von Vornamen an Bedeutung, Prozesse der Individualisierung und der Globalisierung gewinnen hingegen an Relevanz. Dabei lassen sich schicht- und geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede beobachten. Die hier vorgelegte Studie versteht sich einerseits als eine empirische Analyse kultureller Modernisierungsprozesse am Beispiel von Vornamen, sie versteht sich andererseits als eine exemplarische Einführung in die Kultursoziologie. Am Beispiel der Analyse von Vornamen werden die Möglichkeiten eines spezifischen Verständnisses von Kultursoziologie erläutert.     Abstract: »Gute Wissenschaftler«, so wird gemeinhin angenommen, entstehen allein durch ihre individuelle Leistung. Diese auf einer empirischen Untersuchung basierende Studie setzt dagegen die These, dass Leistung nicht unabhängig von der Anerkennung der im wissenschaftlichen Feld etablierten Akteure als funktionales, »objektives« Prinzip existiert, sondern innerhalb sozialer Prozesse individuell zugeschrieben und hergestellt wird. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird auch die Frage beleuchtet, wie es dazu kommt, dass wesentlich mehr männliche als weibliche Aspiranten die akademische Karriere fortsetzen. Der Blick richtet sich dabei weder auf »subjektive Laufbahnen« noch auf »objektive Strukturen«. Untersucht wird vielmehr die alltägliche Praxis des wissenschaftlichen Feldes, die sich im praktischen Sinn, der illusio der Akteure, widerspiegelt. Damit schließt die Studie an Pierre Bourdieus Untersuchungen des wissenschaftlichen Feldes an und ergänzt diese um neue Gesichtspunkte

Why, unlike the Scots, Welsh, Irish and most of continental Europe, do the English find it so difficult to say who they are? The Making of English National Identity, first published in 2003, is a fascinating exploration of Englishness and what it means to be English. Drawing on historical, sociological and literary theory, Krishan Kumar examines the rise of English nationalism and issues of race and ethnicity from earliest times to the present day.     Abstract: Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social movement actions. This book, first published in 2003, examines the interaction of social movements and party politics since the 1950s, both in the United States and around the world. In studies of the US Civil Rights movement, the New Left, the Czechoslovak dissident movements, the Mexican struggle for democracy, and other episodes, this volume shows how party politics and social movements cannot be understood without appreciating their intimate relationship

    Abstract: The management of and communication about risks has become a major question of public policy and intellectual debate in the modern world. The social amplification of risk framework describes how both social and individual factors act to amplify or dampen perceptions of risk and through this create secondary effects such as stigmatisation of technologies, economic losses or regulatory impacts. This volume, edited by three of the world's leading analysts of risk and its communication, brings together contributions from a group of international experts working in the field of risk perception and risk communication.
