Abstract: Arguing that demographic thought begins not with quantification but in attempts to control the qualities of people, Human Empire traces two transformations spanning the early modern period. First was the emergence of population as an object of governance through a series of engagements in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, Ireland, and colonial North America, influenced by humanist policy, reason of state, and natural philosophy, and culminating in the creation of political arithmetic. Second was the debate during the long eighteenth century over the locus and limits of demographic agency, as church, civil society, and private projects sought to mobilize and manipulate different marginalized and racialized groups - and as American colonists offered their own visions of imperial demography. This innovative, engaging study examines the emergence of population as an object of knowledge and governance and connects the history of demographic ideas with their early modern intellectual, political, and colonial contexts
Note: Introduction: Transformations in demographic thought -- Mobility and mutability in the early Tudor body politic -- Marginality, incivility and degeneration in Elizabethan England and Ireland -- Beyond the body politic : territory, population and colonial projecting -- Transmutation, quantification and the creation of political arithmetic -- Improving populations in the eighteenth century -- Conclusion: Malthus, demographic governance and the limits of politics

Abstract: Im 21.

Abstract: "The Atlas shows for the first time the contemporary geography of the entire Tibetan Plateau, an area where major powers (China, India and Pakistan) meet in the highest landscape on earth, originally inhabited by the unique, ancient Buddhis civilization of Tibet. Using extensive satellite imagery, the author has accurately positioned over two thousand religious locations, more than a third of which appear not to have not been previously recorded. Nearly two thousand settlements have also been accurately located and all locations are named in both Tibetan and Chinese where possible. This ancient landscape is shown in contrast to the massive physical infrastructure which has been recently imposed on it as an attempt to "Open up the West" and carry forward the Chinese "Belt and Road Initiative". With 120 maps in full colour"--

Abstract: Biographical note: Franziska Schutzbach, geb.

Abstract: 'Beyond the People' develops a provocative, interdisciplinary, and meta-theoretical critique of the idea of popular sovereignty. It asks simple but far-reaching questions: Can 'imagined' communities, or 'invented' peoples, ever be theorized without, at the same time, being re-imagined and re-invented anew? Can polemical concepts, such as popular sovereignty or constituent power, be theorized objectively? If, as this book argues, the answer to these questions is no, theorists who approach the figure of a sovereign people must acknowledge that their activity is inseparable from the practice of constituent imagination. Though widely accepted as important, even vital, for the development of political concepts, the social practice of imagination is almost always presumed to operate either historically or impersonally, but seldom individually.

Abstract: This book presents a history of India's population for the period stretching from when hunter-gatherer homo sapiens first arrived in the country (very roughly seventy thousand years ago) until the modern day. It draws together archaeology, history, and politics to reveal a surprising and often dramatic story.

Abstract: The Middle East and North Africa have recently experienced one of the highest population growth rates in the world, something which has profoundly affected the wider region and its institutions. In addition, the recent period of unprecedented political turbulence has further complicated the picture, resulting in uprisings and resistance movements that have coincided with intense shifts in socio-cultural norms, as well as economic and political change. Through highlighting the links between population dynamics and the social and political transitions, this book provides a new view of these recent regional changes. The complexity of the changes is further explained in the context of demographic transitions (mortality, fertility, migration) that work hand in hand with development (economic and social modernization) and ultimately, democratization (political modernization). These three Ds (Demographic, Development and Democratic transitions) are central to Elhum Haghighat's analysis of the Middle East and North Africa at this crucial time

Abstract: People have always migrated in search of better climatic conditions or in response to environmental change. Today, this phenomenon takes a whole new dimension, as climate change progressively threatens traditional landscapes and livelihoods of entire communities. Increasingly frequent and intense extreme weather events, such as floods, hurricanes, and droughts lead to significant population displacement every year on every continent. Every day we hear and read about 'environmental' or 'climate migrants'. The Atlas of Environmental Migration is the first illustrated publication mapping environmental migration, clarifying terminology and concepts, drawing a typology of migration related to environment and climate change, describing the multiple factors at play, explaining the challenges, and highlighting the opportunities related to this phenomenon. Through elaborate maps, diagrams, illustrations, case studies from all over the world based on the most updated international research findings, the Atlas guides the reader through this complex phenomenon from the roots of environmental migration to governance

Abstract: Gentrification is likely the largest area of conflict in current urban development policy - because gentrification means that poorer socio-cultural groups are being threatened with displacement by the more prosperous. Although this development is obvious, German and international research has so far only concerned itself with the socio-structural upgrade of certain districts. The consequences for those displaced have so far remained unobserved. Where are they supposed to move to? What does displacement from their historic districts mean for them? What strategies of resistance exist? Using the example of Berlin, the German "capital of gentrification," the contributions in this volume pursue these urgent questions via innovative methods

Abstract: The first full-scale, one-volume survey of the demographic history of the United States has been fully updated here. From the arrival of humans in the Western Hemisphere to the current century, Klein analyses the basic demographic trends in the growth of the pre-conquest, colonial and national populations. From the origin and distribution of the Native Americans to late 20th century changes in family structure, fertility and mortality, this updated edition incorporates recent research, including data from the 2010 census. In this definitive study, Klein explores regional patterns of fertility and mortality, trends in births, deaths and international and internal migrations, comparing them with contemporary European developments. The profound impact of historic declines in disease and mortality rates on the population structure of the late-20th century is explained, while the more recent urbanisation and rise of suburbia are examined within the context of new massive international migrations on North American society

Abstract: The Marshallese collection consists of 15 documents, covering a wide variety of cultural and historical information, circa 1900 to 2005. The earliest descriptions of Marshallese culture and society in the collection are translations from the German originally compiled by a colonial official, two ethnologists, and a missionary. Together, these three documents provide detailed geographic and ethnographic information as observed in 1900-1909. Two documents in the collection are first-hand accounts of Marshallese village life and economic situation as observed in 1946-1947. One of these was a commissioned research by the U.S. government company which sought background cultural and economic information for planning future economic development for the Marshall Islands. The other was authored by Alexander Spoehr, a former U.S. Navy who returned to the Majuro in 1947 as a civilian to conduct ethnological work. In this work, Spoehr contrasts changes in Marshallese culture he observed with his own earlier observations while on active duty with the Navy during World War II. L. M. Carucci conducted extensive fieldwork among inhabitants of Ujelang/Enewetak Atolls on various occasions in 1976-2005. Topics covered by Carrucci include domestic violence (1990, no. 9), community life and concepts of morality (1998, no. 10), dynamics of grandparent/grandchildren relations, aspects of cosmology (1989, no. 22), and rites of passages. The remaining documents in the collection further enrich information in the above three category of works with additional themes and in-depth analyses including land tenure and inheritance rules, gender and family life, internal political dynamics and international relations, and contemporary development issues

Abstract: State borders are more than barriers. They structure social, economic and political spaces and as such provide opportunities as well as obstacles for the communities straddling both sides of the border. This book deals with the conduits and opportunities of state borders in the Horn of Africa, and investigates how the people living there exploit state borders through various strategies. Using a micro level perspective, the case studies, which include the Horn and Eastern Africa, particularly the borders of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, focus on opportunities, highlight the agency of the borderlanders, and acknowledge the permeability but consequentiality of the borders. Abstract: This collection of 28 documents about the peoples of the Woleai Region focuses primarily on the atoll of Ifaluk, and contains information on three time periods: the early 20th century, the late 1940s-mid-1950s, and the late 1980s to the early 1990s. The earliest information comes from travel reports by German explorers and missionaries who lived and worked in the region from 1904-1910; the other writings are by professional anthropologists. Together, the documents show that life in this region remains largely traditional, despite many years of administration by successive external powers. The Woleai Region is an administrative section of Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Woleai is the largest group of closely related atolls in the central and west-central Caroline Islands that also includes Eauripik, Ifaluk, Faraulep, Elato, and Lamotrek. Residents label themselves by means of a nominal prefixed to their particular island name, as in reweleya, which means "person of Woleai (nationality)" and speak dialects of Woleaian, a Micronesian language of the Eatern Oceanic Branch of Austronesian

Abstract: This collection about the Sea Islanders, a Gullah-speaking people who live on the coast and sea islands of Georgia and South Carolina, consists of 14 documents. Four were published between 1926 and 1942, and the rest between 1973 and 2003. The studies focus on folklore and folksongs, oral histories, and language; and the main locations studied are Johns, Wadmalaw, and St. Helena's Islands, South Carolina and St. Simon's Island, Georgia. The Sea Islanders are descendents of slaves first brought to the islands in the seventeenth century. Isolated from the mainland, the Sea Islanders developed a distinct culture, which remained largely intact until the first bridges were built in the 1920s

Abstract: This collection of 26 documents concerns the Yapese, who speak an Eastern Malayo-Polynesian language and occupy the westernmost of the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. The earliest documents in the collection, translated from German, were published between 1873 and 1917 and cover the time period of 1865 to 1910. The accounts are by explorers, government officials, missionaries, natural scientists, and travelers. There is one Spanish source and a German translation of Russian explorer's diary. Topics include religion, geography, music, poetry, dance, funerals, and money. Documents from the American period and onwards, starting in 1947, include a general ethnography, politics, courtship and marriage, dispute settlement, food, and post-colonial changes. Yap was under Spanish control from 1871 to 1899, German control from 1899 to 1914, Japanese control from 1914 to 1945, and American control from 1945 to 1985, after which it became part of an independent state (Yap State) in the Federated States of Micronesia

Abstract: 'Grounded Globalism' is a study of globalism's impact on a region legendarily resistant to change that draws on diverse perspectives. It looks at the South to develop the idea of 'grounded globalism' in which abstract global forces and local cultures rooted in history and place reverberate against each other

Abstract: This collection of 10 documents is about the Badaga and covers the period from 1550 to the 1990s. The Badagas are the largest community in the Nilgiri Hills at the junction of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu states in southern India. Paul Hockings authored eight of these documents, and his work covers Badaga culture from the first contact with Europeans in the early 1800s up to 1995. His strengths are a thorough analysis of social organization and structure, including kinship, marriage and their associated rituals. Two early sources (Thurston 1909, and Sastri 1891-1892) provide overviews of selected aspects of Badaga society and culture

Abstract: This collection of 14 documents describes the Manus people during the period from 1870 to 1992, with a concentration on the 1920s. The Manus are residents of the Papua New Guinea province of Manus. The American anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901-1978) conducted fieldwork on the island from 1928-1929 and again in 1953. This collection contains several her works, including her main monographs on personality development and a follow-up study, 25 years later, on the same subject. The other works by Mead in this collection focus on kinship, animism and children's thought, trade and exchange, and a general introduction to Manus culture and society. Fortune wrote on the Manus religion. Carrier and Schwartz wrote on the Manus economy. Gustafsson wrote his doctoral dissertation on Manus leadership. Otto examines the life of one particular leader, Paliau Maloat, and the history of the movement he led. Romanucci-Ross examines Manus medical treatment

Abstract: This is the first full-scale one-volume survey of the demographic history of the United States. From the arrival of humans in the Western Hemisphere to the current century, Klein analyzes the basic demographic trends in the growth of the pre-conquest, colonial and national populations. He surveys the origin and distribution of the Native Americans, the post-conquest free and servile European and African colonial populations and the variation in regional patterns of fertility and mortality to 1800. He then explores trends in births, deaths, international and internal migrations in the nineteenth century and compares them with contemporary European developments. The profound impact of historic declines in disease and mortality on the structure of the late twentieth century population is explained. Finally the late twentieth century changes in family structure, fertility and mortality are evaluated for their influence on the evolution of the national population for the 21st century

Abstract: Jamaica was an English colony for 300 years while the majority of the population were African slaves. This situation produced a syncretic indigenous Jamaican culture. Sugar was the main industry until the slaves were emancipated. A dual economy exists with bauxite mining and alumina processing being the most important legitimate economic activity while the illegal growing and export of marijuana is the most important cash crop. This file contains one document, a cultural summary from the Encyclopedia of World Cultures that was published in 1995. It contains information on history, economy, settlements, kinship, marriage, family, sociopolitical organization, and religion

Abstract: The Mentawaians live on the Mentawai archipelago that forms part of a chain of non-volcanic islands running parallel to Sumatra, Indonesia. There are four large islands in the group: Siberut, Sipora, and North and South Pagai. This file consists of 14 documents, 13 in English and one in German. These works deal with the ethnography of the inhabitants of the North and South Pagai Islands, the Sakalagan or "people of the village", as well as the Sakalelegan or Sakoban of Sipora, and the Sakkudei (Sakuddei) people of Siberut. Loeb, Nooy-Palm, Wallace, and Crisp all focus their ethnographic works on the Pagai Islands and Sipora, while Schefold concentrates his studies on Siberut Island and the Sakkudei (Sakuddei) people

Abstract: Population and Climate Change provides the first systematic in-depth treatment of links between two major themes of the twenty-first century: population growth and associated demographic trends such as aging, and climate change. It is written by a multidisciplinary team of authors from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, who integrate both natural science and social science perspectives in a way that is readable by members of both communities. The book will be of primary interest to researchers in the fields of climate change, demography, and economics. It will also be useful to policy-makers and NGOs dealing with issues of population dynamics and climate change, and to teachers and students on courses such as environmental studies, demography, climatology, economics, earth systems science, and international relations

Abstract: Mussolini believed that numbers were the key to strength. Between 1922 and 1945 the Fascists attempted to translate that belief into policy by introducing a structured programme to increase the population in Italy. This included campaigns to increase the birth rate, the establishment of demographic colonies, and a battle against urbanisation. This book is a detailed examination of the demographic policy of Mussolini's Fascist regime. Based on archival research, it shows how the Fascists used statistics to mould public opinion, as well as to form policy, and demonstrates the ways in which population theory at the time both reflected and informed policy. Carl Ipsen argues that Mussolini's demographic policy can tell us a great deal about the contradictory nature of Fascism itself, and describes the Fascist efforts to mould the Italian population as one of the most telling examples of the failed attempt to create a totalitarian Fascist utopia

Abstract: Death and the Metropolis offers a powerful analysis of demographic patterns in London over the 'long eighteenth century', concentrating on mortality but also including data on marital fertility, population structure and migration. The study is based on a variety of sources including weekly and annual Bills of Mortality, parish registers and Quaker vital registers, and employs the techniques of family reconstitution and aggregative analysis. The data are analysed within the framework of a structural model of mortality change comprising the proximate determinants of exposure to, and resistance against, infectious agents on the the part of populations. Within this framework a model is established describing the specific demographic and epidemiological characteristics of early modern metropolitan centres. The evidence indicates that mortality in London was much higher than in other settlements in England for most of the period, but declined steeply in the later eighteenth century. This apparently reflected changes in exposure to infections

Abstract: Belonging in the two Berlins is an ethnographic investigation into the meaning of German selfhood during the Cold War. Taking the practices of everyday life in the divided Berlin as his point of departure, Borneman shows how ideas of kin, state, and nation were constructed through processes of mirror-imaging and misrecognition. Using linguistics and narrative analysis, he compares the autobiographies of two generations of Berlins residents with the official version of the lifecourse prescribed by the two German states. He examines the relation of the dual political structure to everyday life, the way in which the two states legally regulated the lifecourse in order to define the particular categories of self which signify Germanness, and how citizens experientially appropriated the frameworks provided by these states. Living in the two Berlins constantly compelled residents to define themselves in opposition to their other half. Borneman argues that this resulted in a de facto divided Germany with two distinct nations and peoples. The formation of German subjectivity since World War II is unique in that the distinctive features for belonging - for being at home - to one side exclude the other. Indeed, these divisions inscribed by the Cold War account for many of the problems in forging a new cultural unity

Abstract: This book follows the social, economic and demographic transformations of the Alpine area from the late Middle Ages. Its aim is to reassess the image of the upland community which emerges from the work of historians, geographers and social anthropologists. The book therefore deals at length with such problems as the causes and consequences of emigration and patterns of marriage and inheritance in favouring or hampering the adjustments of local populations to changing economic or ecological circumstances, and tackles the vexed question of the relative importance of cultural and environmental factors in shaping family forms and community structures. Although its foundation lies in a long period of anthropological fieldwork conducted in an Alpine community, Upland Communities relies on the methods and conceptual tools of historical demography. Combined with a long-term historical perspective, its broad comparative approach unveils an unexpected diversity in regional and spatial demographic patterns and questions a number of deep-rooted but ultimately misleading notions concerning mountain society and its alleged backwardness in the past

Abstract: This book provides a detailed examination of the demographic behavior of families during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in a sample of fourteen villages in five different regions of Germany. It is based on the reconstituted family histories of vital events (births, deaths and marriages) compiled by genealogies for the entire populations of these villages. The book applies the type of micro-level analysis possible with family reconstitution data for the crucial period leading to and encompassing the early stages of the demographic transition, including the initial onset of the decline of fertility to low modern levels. The analysis explores many aspects of demographic behavior which have been largely ignored by previous macro-level investigations of the demographic transition. These include infant and child mortality, maternal mortality, marriage, marital dissolution, bridal pregnancy and illegitimacy. The core of the study, however, deals with marital reproduction, examining the modernization of reproductive behavior in terms of the transition from a situation of natural fertility to one characterized by pervasive family limitation

Abstract: While many scholars have been interested in the size of the Indian population of the Americas at the time of first contact with Europeans, this book, first published in 1982, was the first to make a thorough examination of the question. Focusing on Peru, Professor Cook estimates population size on the basis of archaeology, carrying capacity of the agricultural systems, disease mortality, depopulation ratios, and census projection. He also analyses the catastrophic population decline that resulted from contact with Europeans, and compares this experience with that of the coastal region and the Andean highlands
