    Abstract: Lange Zeit waren kroatische Nationalisten, unter ihnen Anhänger des faschistischen Ustaša-Regimes, eine der aktivsten Exilgruppen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Global eng vernetzt und untereinander zum Teil spinnefeind, einte sie der Kampf gegen das sozialistische Jugoslawien, den manche Akteure auch mit politischer Gewalt austrugen. Vor allem jugoslawische Repräsentanten und Infrastrukturen, aber auch jugoslawische Arbeitsmigranten wurden immer wieder zum Ziel von Anschlägen. Wer waren die kroatischen Exilanten? Wie wurden ihre Aktivitäten in der Bundesrepublik diskutiert? Und welche Konsequenzen hatte dies für ihre Beobachtung und Verfolgung durch die Sicherheitsbehörden? Fragen wie diesen geht Matthias Thaden in seinem Buch nach. Er kann aufzeigen, wie das von Exilkroaten und von den „Gegenmaßnahmen‟ des jugoslawischen Geheimdienstes ausgehende Gefahrenpotenzial zum Kompetenzausbau von Polizei und Verfassungsschutz herangezogen wurde. Die Verbindung von migrations- und sicherheitspolitischen Fragestellungen hat daher eine weitaus längere Geschichte als häufig angenommen. Das Buch stellt deswegen auch eine Intervention in aktuelle Debatten dar und ist ein Plädoyer für mehr historische Tiefenschärfe.

    Abstract: "A major common misconception in scholarship on Kurdish journalistic discourses is that Kurdish intellectuals of the late Ottoman period cannot be portrayed as Kurdish nationalists. This theory prevails because of the belief that they not only endorsed and promoted Pan-Islamism and Ottoman nationalism instead of Kurdish ethnic nationalism, but also because they allegedly eschewed political demands and instead concerned themselves with ethno-cultural issues to articulate forms of ?Kurdism? rather than ?Kurdish nationalism.?00Refuting this underlying misconstruction of the nexus between Pan-Islamism, Ottomanism, and Kurdish nationalism, this book argues, based on empirical findings, that the Kurdish periodicals of the late Ottoman period served as a communicative space in which Kurdish intellectuals negotiated and disseminated an unmistakable form of Kurdish nationalism. It claims that hegemonic Ottomanist and Pan-Islamist political thought were used in pragmatic ways in the service of burgeoning Kurdish nationalism, but were rejected altogether when they were no longer useful to fostering Kurdish nationalism"--Page four of cover

    Abstract: "Embattled Dreamlands explores the complex relationship between competing national myths, imagined boundaries and local memories in the threefold-contested geography referred to as Eastern Turkey, Western Armenia or Northern Kurdistan. Spatially rooted in the shatter zone of the post-Ottoman and post-Soviet space, it sheds light on the multi-layered memory landscape of the Lake Van region in Southeastern Turkey where collective violence stretches back from the Armenian Genocide to the Kurdish conflict of today. Based on his fieldwork in Turkey and Armenia, the author examines how states work to construct and monopolize collective memory by narrating, silencing, mapping, and performing the past, and how these narratives might help to contribute and resolve present-day conflicts. By looking at how national discourses are constructed and asking hard questions about why nations are imagined as exclusive and hostile to others, Embattled Dreamlands provides a unique insight into the development of national identity which will provide a great resource to students and researchers in sociology and history alike"--

Die Friedenspreisträgerin Aleida Assmann ruft dazu auf, die Nation neu zu denken und sie gegen ihre Verächter zu verteidigen. Die Tabuisierung der Nation hat in Deutschland zu einem Mangel an Aufklärung und Diskussion über Sinn und Rolle der Nation geführt.     Abstract: Within the history of African American struggle against racist oppression that often verges on dystopia, a hidden tradition has depicted a transfigured world. Daring to speculate on a future beyond white supremacy, black utopian artists and thinkers offer powerful visions of ways of being that are built on radical concepts of justice and freedom. They imagine a new black citizen who would inhabit a world that soars above all existing notions of the possible.In Black Utopia, Alex Zamalin offers a groundbreaking examination of African American visions of social transformation and their counterutopian counterparts. Considering figures associated with racial separatism, postracialism, anticolonialism, Pan-Africanism, and Afrofuturism, he argues that the black utopian tradition continues to challenge American political thought and culture. Black Utopia spans black nationalist visions of an ideal Africa, the fiction of W. E. B. Du Bois, and Sun Ra’s cosmic mythology of alien abduction. Zamalin casts Samuel R. Delany and Octavia E. Butler as political theorists and reflects on the antiutopian challenges of George S. Schuyler and Richard Wright. Their thought proves that utopianism, rather than being politically immature or dangerous, can invigorate political imagination. Both an inspiring intellectual history and a critique of present power relations, this book suggests that, with democracy under siege across the globe, the black utopian tradition may be our best hope for combating injustice

    Abstract: Riots, strikes, and protests broke out in the streets of Shanghai and Bombay (renamed Mumbai in 1995), with impressive frequency during the twentieth century. Many of the landmark protests and social movements had close connections with the neighborhoods, workplaces, and civic space of each city. By the late twentieth century, as the political geography of each city changed rapidly with the commodification of urban land, so too did the patterns of political contention. Using a comparative historical lens, Frazier chronicles the political biographies of these two metropolises and leading centers of manufacturing and finance. Debates over ideology, citizenship, and political representation took material form through clashes over housing, jobs, police violence, public space, among much else, in the lived experience of urban residents. Frazier puts contemporary debates over informal housing, eviction of inner-city residents, scarcities of manufacturing jobs, and questions of unequal citizenship in an illuminating historical context.

    Abstract: Memory is as central to modern politics as politics is central to modern memory. We are so accustomed to living in a forest of monuments, to having the past represented to us through museums, historic sites, and public sculpture, that we easily lose sight of the recent origins and diverse meanings of these uniquely modern phenomena. In this volume, leading historians, anthropologists, and ethnographers explore the relationship between collective memory and national identity in diverse cultures throughout history. Placing commemorations in their historical settings, the contributors disclose the contested nature of these monuments by showing how groups and individuals struggle to shape the past to their own ends. The volume is introduced by John Gillis's broad overview of the development of public memory in relation to the history of the nation-state.     Abstract: This book examines how Asianism became a key concept in mainstream political discourse between China and Japan and how it was used both domestically and internationally in the contest for political hegemony. It argues that, from the early 1910s to the early 1930s, this contest changed Chinese and Japanese perceptions of?Asia?, from a concept that was foreign-referential, foreign-imposed, peripheral, and mostly negative and denied (in Japan) or largely ignored (in China) to one that was self-referential, self-defined, central, and widely affirmed and embraced. As an ism, Asianism elevated?Asia? as a geographical concept with culturalist-racialist implications to the status of a full-blown political principle and encouraged its proposal and discussion vis-à-vis other political doctrines of the time, such as nationalism, internationalism, and imperialism. By the mid-1920s, a great variety of conceptions of Asianism had emerged in the transnational discourse between Japan and China. Terminologically and conceptually, they not only paved the way for the appropriation of?Asia? discourse by Japanese imperialism from the early 1930s onwards but also facilitated the embrace of Sino-centric conceptions of Asianism by Chinese politicians and collaborators

By the time Derek turned nineteen, he had become an elected politician with his own daily radio show - already regarded as the "the leading light" of the burgeoning white nationalist movement. "We can infiltrate," Derek once told a crowd of white nationalists. "We can take the country back." Then he went to college. Derek had been home-schooled by his parents, steeped in the culture of white supremacy, and he had rarely encountered diverse perspectives or direct outrage against his beliefs. At New College of Florida, he continued to broadcast his radio show in secret each morning, living a double life until a classmate uncovered his identity and sent an email to the entire school. "Derek Black...white supremacist, radio host...New College student???" The ensuing uproar overtook one of the most liberal colleges in the country. Some students protested Derek's presence on campus, forcing him to reconcile for the first time with the ugliness his beliefs.     Abstract: This analysis of the "foreign cultural politics as conflict prevention" shows how strongly the foreign cultural politics of Germany are still being structured by national systems, narratives and hierarchies.
    Abstract: Wir leben in einer verflochtenen und dennoch geteilten Welt: Asymmetrien, Grenzziehungen und Politiken der Differenz bringen gleichzeitig die Trennlinien und den gemeinsamen Kontext für globales Zusammenleben hervor. Diese Ambivalenz schlägt sich auch in der deutschen Auswärtigen Kulturpolitik nieder, die sich ursprünglich an den Ordnungen des Nationalen orientiert hat, seit der Jahrtausendwende aber zunehmend auch geopolitische Bruchlinien und Konflikte als ihre Arbeitsfelder begreift. Basierend auf Feldforschungen in Berlin, Ramallah, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv und Jerusalem zeichnet Jens Adam Formierungs- und Übersetzungsprozesse einer neuen Policy nach. Er eröffnet damit Einblicke in translokale Wissens- und Handlungsräume, in denen sich Ordnungen des Nationalen und Potenziale der Kosmopolitisierung kreuzen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem ifa-Forschungspreis Auswärtige Kulturpolitik 2016.

    Abstract: "L'obsession de l'identité taraude une France bousculée par la crise et la mondialisation sur fond d'immigration mal intégrée. C'est ainsi que se développe une mouvance identitaire de plus en plus influente dans le monde politique et intellectuel. Dans cet univers où Ion craint pour la survie d'un peuple français blanc et chrétien, on croise les jeunes militants de l'extrême droite identitaire mais aussi l'écrivain Renaud Camus, l'inventeur du grand remplacement, ou encore Pierre Sautarel, l'animateur du site très fréquenté Fdesouche. Éric Dupin montre comment ce courant d'idées et de militants pénètre le Front national, même si ses thèses y sont discutées. Il interroge les intellectuels qui s'inscrivent, chacun à sa manière, dans la veine identitaire comme Alain de Benoist ou Alain Finkielkraut. Il examine comment cette question percute l'ensemble du champ politique, avec le témoignage de personnalités aussi diverses que Marion Maréchal-Le Pen ou Jean-Pierre Chevènement. L'auteur s'interroge enfin sur la profonde mutation du peuple français et sur la crise du "vivre ensemble' qui imposent une redéfinition des valeurs républicaines.     Abstract: Im östlichen Europa leben in den letzten Jahrzehnten historische Mythen wieder auf: »Volkskultur« oder religiöse Traditionen tragen genauso zu einer nationalen Identitätspolitik bei wie jüngere Erinnerungsorte, beispielsweise aus dem Kontext Sport oder der Populärkultur. Mit Blick auf Polen, Tschechien, Russland, Bulgarien, Ungarn, Kroatien, die Slowakei sowie die Ukraine ethnografieren die Beiträge des Bandes diese Wiederentdeckung des Nationalen aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive.     Abstract: "Nationalism and ethnicity have become, across time and space, a force in the construction of boundaries. This book analyses geographical and physical borders and symbolic, political and socio-economic boundaries, and how they impact upon nationalism and ethnic identity. Geographic and other tangible borders are critical components in the making and unmaking of boundaries. However, symbolic or intangible boundaries along national, ethnic, political or socio-economic criteria are equally significant. Organised into three sections on theory, national and transnational case studies, this book both introduces existing approaches to the study of boundaries and illustrates how it is possible to apply renewed boundary approaches to better understand nationalism and ethnicity in contemporary contexts. Thus, when nationalists in postwar Europe found elites unresponsive, it was state repression that helped radicals build a new group of support around militant action. The larger this new constituency legitimizing violence grew, the longer the conflict lasted.     Abstract: In Martial Arts and the Body Politic in Indonesia Lee Wilson offers an innovative study of nationalism and the Indonesian state through the ethnography of the martial art of Pencak Silat. Wilson shows how technologies of physical and spiritual warfare such as Pencak Silat have long played a prominent role in Indonesian political society. He demonstrates the importance of these technologies to the display and performance of power, and highlights the limitations of theories of secular modernity for understanding political forms in contemporary Indonesia. He offers a compelling argument for a revisionist account of models of power in Indonesia in which authority is understood as precarious and multiple, and the body is politically charged because of its potential for transformation

    Abstract: Benedict Anderson hat im Zusammenhang mit der Entstehung nationaler Gebilde das erfolgreiche Konzept der imagined communities geprägt. Die Schaffung einer nationalen Sprache, einer Ursprungslegende und einer Erinnerungskultur ermöglicht die Konstitution eines Feldes der nationalen Zeit. Diesem zeitlichen Feld entspricht auch ein räumliches. So wurden nationale Formationen im europäischen Raum immer wieder auf bestimmte Landschaftstypologien zurückgeführt. Aufgrund seines diskursiv-medialen Ansatzes geraten bei Anderson landschaftliche Phänomene jedoch erst gar nicht in den Blick. Rainer Guldin schließt diese theoretische Lücke hier exemplarisch für den deutschen Sprachraum. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei Prozesse der Metaphorisierung, denen auch Simon Schama in seinem Buch über Landschaft und Gedächtnis nachgegangen ist.
